When this cow wanders in, there might be stouts being slowly savored near the fireplace, humans discussing ancient literature, a family laughing over a half-finished pizza, or a nearby table deep into a heated game of Magic the Gathering with ESBs and cider in hoof. It's cozy, communal, and usually feels just right. One thing this cow respects -- the beer here is strong, and it's not brewed for the weak. There's nothing on tap that isn't unique or intentional. That said, this also means Bardic isn't for everyone. The average beer drinker looking for a simple, easy-drinking West Coast IPA that isn't pushing 9% ABV may leave unsatisfied, and that likely eliminates a large portion of beer drinkers in the area. For adventurous palates, though, this place is a treat. Lately, this cow has noticed the welcome hasn't been quite as warm as it used to be. The beer and food remain excellent, but the last few visits felt a bit less friendly. A smile or a greeting would go a long way in restoring the inviting feel this pasture is known for. Nothing has soured, and this cow will return. Eventually, I finally walked through the door, and I'm writing this review to help you not make the same mistake I did . The first thing you notice is how warm and inviting the place is. Wood tables, fun chairs, great music, and plants. So many plants. It feels like an actual neighborhood hangout. Here's the funny part: I can't stand beer. My wife likes it, but my taste buds won't allow it. I'm also a type 2 diabetic, so a lot of the usual brewery food isn't really an option for me. But the first time we came in, I saw things like Caprese Salad, Italian Salad, Smoked Salmon, and other options that actually work for me. And then I discovered they make their own hard seltzers. Game changer! They always have several fun flavors, and they're unsweetened, which is exactly what I'm looking for. You can also get cans to go if you want to bring some home. The person at the bar was extremely friendly and made me feel very welcome. The two sandwiches came up to $40ish. I brought the sandwiches home and first tried a few bites of the Fancy Pants Sando. I will have to say it was the better of the two sandwiches. I appreciated the goat cheese in the sandwich and the mix of different ingredients, but it was not something I would consider to be a great sandwich, at least not for me. Others might find it pleasant, but I did not care for it much. The fig sandwich was the one I was more excited about and expected some sweetness to be cut down by the bacon. I don't think it was a perfect balance between the two, and I got a tad much of the overwhelming sweetness of the figs in this sandwich. Again, others might enjoy it, but I didn't care for it. I really wanted to give this place a great review, but unfortunately it did not meet my expectations. The beer looks fun though and might be a good reason to give this place a try, and you may enjoy their sandwiches and many people have. For me, that's a no-go.

The service was quite slow considering how empty the place was. Maybe they sent some staff home. West Plains Brewing is one of these and am glad that I became aware of it. The lady that was at the counter was super nice and very congenial to visit with so that was very nice. I was having a difficult time trying to decide out of their beer options as to what to have so I went with a taster set and that was a good choice to have made. I tried four different beers from that taster set and I liked them all very much! One of the beers was the Cerveza Fria which was the brewery's Mexican Lager. It was pleasant and refreshing with a slight biscuity flavor and a crispness to it that is perfect to refresh yourself with on warm days. Another beer I had was the Allegiance which was an Amber beer. It was biscuity also and went down easy where it would be very easy to get more of this beer in one sitting. The third beer I had was the Muddy Boots. I liked the maltiness in this beer. While the beer is rich to drink it also comes across as light bodied which gives it an overall nice balance. The fourth and final beer I had was an Oatmeal Stout by the name of Broken Paddle. I do like Oatmeal Stouts and this one was no exception. The flavors you can enjoy in this one are chocolate, coffee and roasty in the beer. The beer is smooth but also comes across as light bodied which you occasionally see in some stouts. A very nice visit to this brewery and worthy of returns whenever I am back in the area.
