I have not been to the Newburyport Natural Dog but I ADORE Jill, who used to be the store manager at The Natural Dog in Hamilton and is now working with more stores than Hamilton, which is good news for the chain but sad for me as I miss seeing Jill! Fortunately, the new manager at the Hamilton store, Meaghan, is incredibly nice and helpful, too. In general, the people who work at The Natural Dog are super knowledgeable about food, allergies, sensitive stomachs, etc and are kind and helpful. If you love your animal and want the best advice on what to feed your furry friend this is where you want to go. The owner has an advanced degree in animal nutrition. When my dog was a puppy, she would not eat anything I tried to feed her. I was advised by The Natural Dog people to try a particular dog food and now, 12 years later, my doggie is still loving this high nutrition food. I've been going here for a few years . They carry a lot of high end dog / cat food , toys and gear . One of my pets has allergies and the food i need is sold here , which is why I decided to go here at all. Very pricey for simple things like toys and pet accessories. The location is less than 15 minutes from my home so it was convenient. I pulled up yesterday to see a "no mask no service" sign on the door . That's a deal breaker for me . I have medical exemption and that sign plastered on the door tells me they do NOT want my business nor are they sensitive to people with medical exemptions. I drove home and ordered everything I needed from chewy.com and it's arriving today . No has hassle, no masks and no Karens. read more

The Natural Dog has a tremendous selection of quality food, treats, and accessories for your dog. I came in after another walk where my dog pulled against her collar, dragged me, and looked in pain during the entire walk and the woman behind the counter was extremely helpful. She directed me to the harness leash section, and was able to speak expertly on the different kinds available. I had my dog with me, and she was so good with her. Very sweet, and my dog is usually skittish and shy, but Pixel absolutely loved this woman! We found a harness that fit perfectly, and I was told that I could return it or exchange it for a better one within 30 days even if it had some wear from walking on it. I am pleased to say that the harness has worked wonders! No more pulling, tugging, running after other dogs. Walks are much more enjoyable for me, and I'm hoping for Pixel too. I am so thankful for the woman working there that took the time to really discuss options with me and to try different harnesses until we found a good fit. Pricing is good. I'm pretty sure you're not over-paying for anything. Some of the treats looked interesting, and I may go back and buy some; my dog is a brat though- she ignores treats and goes insane at drive-thru windows so she gets munchkins as treats. Our family is a huge fan of The Natural Dog - our rescue center suggested we check them our after the adoption of our dog in February. They were very helpful with all our needs - especially when it came to fitting our four legged friend with a harness - he is no pure breed and a very tricky fit! The staff there opened packages and tried all kinds on him until we found the right fit! Our dog is also a HUGE fan of what I call the 'dog buffet' of smoke bones and what I consider 'exotic' treats for him. We are very pleased with The Natural Dog. Our little old lady has always had one issue or another, and the knowledgeable staff at The Natural Dog has always been helpful as we work through her various ailments. In the rare instance where someone couldn't thoroughly answer to our question, they always offered to speak with either the owner or the food rep and get back to us. And then they did, within 24 hours. Very impressive. Never disparaging of our choice at times to go along with more traditional vet's recommendations (and you do sometimes get flak for that in a natural/wholistic setting), they've always helped us figure out how we can enhance her diet and supplements to support what we're learning at the vet. Some of the prices may be higher, but for the quality of the products and the knowledge of the staff, you still get a good value. We found some good products and toys here for our new pup, but there was a little bit of attitude when we asked for Hills (vet recommended) and some employees were not very knowledgeable about the calming products they sold at the register-and told us not to purchase them. Very pricey in part because of the nature of some of the products they carry but even where they could carry some more affordable options or a wider variety (cost wise) of some things, they don't, so just keep that in mind.. We had a dog with IBD and they were the only shop around who could get exotic meats that I needed for a novel protein novel carb elimination diet. Even independent butchers couldn't get me some of the things they were able to get. They also carry Nature's Miracle and a very effective all nature flea and tick repellant. If you are looking for natural and organic products, they do have a lot to offer but be prepared to pay premium rates across the board and comparison shop for those things that are available elsewhere. Customer service can be inconsistent but despite that, I have recommended the store to many people whose dogs have developed dietary issues because they have access to the widest variety of exotic proteins and natural products of anyone in the area read more

My favorite place to shop! They have all of my dog's favorite treats and food, they're constantly bringing in new products that help my dogs live their best lives and the staff is always friendly. I appreciate that they are covid conscious and safe. Masks, cleaning and limited capacity all means that I can shop their safely. They continue to do a great job even through a pandemic. read more

I believe the staff at the Natural Dog in Newburyport helped save my dog's life. Recently, my beloved 15 year old shih tzu showed scary signs of possible early kidney disease. The vet recommended a variety of prescription kidney foods. Well, he ate them at first, but soon he refused or looked miserable when he tried to eat. He looked so sick, thin and unhappy. He stopped eating altogether, even when I tried feeding him people food by hand. I really thought I was going to lose him. Desperate to get him to eat, I went to the Natural Dog in tears. They were so very kind and knowledgeable, and highly recommended that I try Dr. Harvey's Canine Health Miracle Dog Food. They offered my money back if he wouldn't eat it. I followed the directions on the bag for the low protein diet and it was a true miracle. He ate it right away and he loved it! I couldn't believe my eyes. In the weeks that have followed, he has gone back to his old self and cannot wait for his Dr. Harvey's food. My vet is impressed too. Really love the selection of dog food, treats, and homeopathic remedies. They would be my "every week" stop except for some reason they don't care about customer service. I ran out of food, and called The Natural Dog 5 minutes before closing telling them I'd be there right at closing or a minute before to get the food. They told me that they can't stay open for me because "people have to go home to their families". I just can't believe you wouldn't go out of your way to keep business in an e-commerce driven market. So grateful to the staff at The Natural Dog here in Newburyport. Jake is getting older and was having such a hard time digesting his food. He was getting sick after eating almost every day. They turned me onto a special canned food and a probiotic and explained that a high end canned food with simple ingredients is much easier for dogs with tummy issues to digest. I would have never thought to give him canned food over dry (apparently even the best dry food goes through a lot of processing). It's now been 8 days since his last episode and we are so happy. He had already had every test possible at the Vets office, so we were at a loss before we consulted with the folks at The Natural Dog. Great store and exceptional staff! On my first visit, I was looking for some good food for my very sick senior kitty who wasn't eating. The girl who helped me was informative and gave me some good suggestions to try with unique protein sources....even gave me free samples! My kitty ended up passing a couple of months ago as her disease was too advanced, but I will always be appreciative of the help and kindness. Although, I have never written a bad review, I felt compelled to write this one,. The treatment I recieved when I questioned a price increase was outragous. I had been buying about $700 worth of food every 2-3 weeks from The Natural Dog in Newbutyport. The women I originally talked to about placing this order, claimed to be the owner, After serveral months of doing buisness there, without notice or even telling me that day, the price went up significantly. When I questioned the price change at check out, I was first told, it must be the tax. I explained, I was aware of the tax but this order was significantly higher than it had been in the past. The cashier seemed baffled. When I asked again, the owner came over and very rudley said, "There was a price increase, if you dont want it dont take it!" I was stunned. I had spent over $700 every 2-3 weeks there for months, and because I questioned an unexplained price increase, she felt the need to be rude and outright nasty. I calmly told her that I felt as a good customer, she could have told me about a price increase some time prior to check out. Actually good service would had been to call me and tell me about the increase, but I would have settled for when I came in the store,. I had been shopping for other items, so was there for quite some time. She then claimed NOT to be the owner and said she was just an employee and hoped not to get fired for her behaviour. ???? What? Now, I happen to know that she is and was the owner of the store, so what was she trying to accomplish with that story is still a mystery to me. I now do buisness with Ann-imals in York and find the same great products but with much lower prices. read more

I was very excited to find a local business that had natural foods for my animals. I recently went there to find food for my pets. Walking out the door I felt like a terrible pet owner. The close minded worker proceeded to tell me how my holistic medicine and food choice was poor and the products they sell I should buy. Having been to many pet stores I noticed the prices higher than most. I did not feel comfortable buying the highly priced items she suggested and told her I would think it over. She then told me it was only my dogs health I was 'dealing with'. I would pay any amount of money for my animals but do not feel like I need to be criticized for not purchasing items suggested. I did like the selection but wish prices and service was better. I highly recommend others to shop elsewhere. read more

I admit I didn't go through the store and compare every single brand name, but the dog food I go in there for is fairly priced. They were also MORE than helpful in food choice. They happily accepted returned food more than once ( my dog is a picky eater and requires selective foods due to health issues) and discussed with me at length what good alternatives would be. My vet recommended a kibble called NOW that I'd never heard of... She told me I could find it at The Natural Dog. Upon entering the store, I saw many brands and food for cats and dogs I'd never seen before. Nothing you'd find in Petco, Petsmart, or Pet Life, anyway. The manager of the store was very very helpful and took the time to explain some of the differences between brands and why NOW was a stand only product. I was impressed. And I loved being introduced to new brands - maybe better than Wellness and Blue Buffalo and Wilderness. Definitely worth a stop and look, and perhaps "educational" conversation with the manager. The first time I stopped in was in January. I had just gotten a unique breed of cat and as this was my first time as a cat owner I was a little nervous. I had run out of the type of wet food that the rescue shelter gave me and I wasn't able to find it anywhere and was pretty stressed out about it. When I walked in to the store I asked for help and the sales girl was incredibly sweet and knowledgeable and helped me find a wet food with the best balance of nutrients for my type of cat. I decided to start with just one can. When she rang me up and set up a customer profile for me in their computer system and since I was a first time customer she handed me a welcome bag full of products and treats even though I was only buying about two dollars worth of food! I thought that absolutely amazing! My cat loves the food and I did notice that Petco does carry the same brand (and the price is actually the same) but being from Newbury I prefer to shop locally, plus the big chains have never given me a welcome bag! I'm not sure how the other products compare since I only really buy the wet food and an occasional toy but I absolutely love this store and have recommended it to other pet owners in the area. read more

I'm one of those people who goes home and DOES the research before buying. Their prices are very good and comparable to online prices, especially when you factor in shipping costs, you actually do better at the Natural Dog and you are supporting a local business....this is NOT a chain or big box store.
