After eating lunch on Bainbridge Island I wanted to check out some of the museums in the area. I stopped by this historical museum which is a small museum but it's free and absolutely wonderful! What this museum lacks in size it makes up in amazing information about the history and even the future of residents on Bainbridge Island. The front exhibit told some stories of families and homes that go back generations and was about preserving history and keeping histories and stories alive. It included pictures of the homes and quotes from the families who live in them. Some even had their homes passed down from ancestors going back to the early 1900s. The exhibit in the back was about the history of Japanese American internment camps during World War II on Bainbridge Island. There were many stories of Japanese American residents on Bainbridge Island who were taken from their homes. If you want to see more history of Japanese American internment camps there is the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial on the southern part of the island. The memorial is on the strip of land where Japanese Americans walked as they were taken away. It was fascinating to read about the history and the impact that these events had for the people on Bainbridge Island. This is a fantastic museum to chekc out if you have time on the island!

Friendly volunteers and two great exhibits to browse through in the reclaimed schoolhouse they use for the museum. Hours are Wednesday - Sunday 10-4; Research room available by appointment (on their website) Thursday and Saturdays.

Small, quaint little museum with free access. Docents available to share the rich history of Bainbridge island. They have a scavenger hunt available for small kids while parents enjoy reading about the towns history through a historical tributes.

Bainbridge Island History Museum is located in a renovated 1908 Bainbridge Island schoolhouse. There is parking onsite for the museum. The museum is conveniently located near downtown Winslow. This quaint, small museum, is busting full at the seams with award wining exhibits. I was surprised by the quality of the exhibits, and the amount of information contained within such a small space. It was better than some larger museums I have been too. You will find inside exhibits about the Japanese American residents that were interned. The video is worth taking time to watch. They also have a moving display of Ansel Adams photos of the Manzanar interment in California that the majority of Japanese American's from Bainbridge were taken too. I also learned about the Port Blakely lumber mill, which at the time was the largest mill in the world. They also have information about the Filipino island community, and the Native Americans that used the island seasonally. The museum also has an amazing research library that is open to the public. I was visiting the island with my friend whose family grew up on the island. The staff were incredibly friendly, and helped her find historical photographs and records in their collection regarding her family. For only an adult admission of $4, this place is definitely worth a stop. This is not your typical small town history museum. They also have great information on places to visit on the island. The local volunteers in the museum gave us some excellent recommendations.

It was so easy to call and reserve in advance, and you can get a reasonable price on a wide variety of bikes. They have a fairly large fleet, but tend to get busy on the weekends. If it's a smaller group, you can probably just get a day-of rental. We got an e-bike with both the throttle and pedal assist, and it really helped to tackle some of the big hills on the island. It was easy to adjust and the battery life is no joke. The rentals also came with helmets and locks, which were great when we stopped for lunch. It's located a stone's throw from the ferry terminal, and I explored the north side of the island in ~2 hours -- my only regret is not getting a longer time frame. I'll definitely be back!

Definitely a bit of a learning curve that no amount of good service can get you over, you just kind of have to ride and figure it out for yourself. Location right next to the ferry is unbeatable if you're coming in from Seattle. Had a really fun time on the island that I may not have had otherwise. Definitely felt I got my money's worth.

I'm still in shock over the tour- Seattle was a literal crap show from the very beginning. Building a town on a beach, with no understanding that "waste" should be far enough from the water at high tide. They did not understand and apparently the crappy situation plagued the city for decades. I heard the story of Seattle ordering "crappers" from London- the latest in new technology- which took 10 years to full the order, but the city didn't know about "plumbing". The logging town at the time build wooden pipes..... and still were trying to send the crap out into the water. tides go out, tides come in resulting in backpressure in the toilets closest to the waterfront. Meaning, if you flushed during high tide, about 6 feet of sewage water would catapult you off said John. Ohhhh- did I mention the horrific rat problem too. Eventually said logging city burned to the ground. A blessing in disguise so they might have the chance to build better. The vivid storytelling of our guide really painted a noxious, rough road of Seattle. Years ago, I had a rat run across my foot in the middle of the day, in a park, next to the Space Needle- this tour really explained a lot, lol.

I learned about this tour from a friend and I think it's fairly new. At any rate, interesting tour. Not your typical here's the city and these are some of the landmarks and here are some fun facts. The difference is this tour was focused around the public art that can be seen everyday along the streets and sidewalks, built into the infrastructure, in the form of manhole covers or hatches as they are referred to. The folks conducting the tour included information of the various artistic manhole covers, combining it with first hand information from the artists and discussed the history of the work and how it fits into the identity of Seattle. They also provide information on the history of the city and how Seattle became the city you see as you take the tour. Pretty neat concept exploring aspects of the city that folks often take for granted as they pass by. Another fun fact about this tour is that it evolved out of an art project. I thought that was particularly interesting. Some of the prints, etc are pretty cool and again not what you would typically expect or encounter from one of these free tours. I'd recommend this tour to anybody to who wants to learn more about the history of Seattle, who appreciates public art or art in general and who has a free hour or so on a Saturday morning.
