My brother discovered this place last year when he was visiting our family here in Maryland. The people working there were very nice, and the shelves were full of interesting prepackaged international snacks and treats. We went in to try out their homemade baklava, and it was delicious! But what made this little market unforgettable for me was their homemade Turkish delight candy. They keep it in the glass case under the register and it is AMAZING!! I've had mass-produced Turkish delight before, those chewy cubes dusted in powdered sugar, usually packaged in some kind of tray or box? but this was something else, fantastic-looking confections combining textures and flavors I've never experienced before. My son's favorite variety was coated in tiny balls of crispy chocolate, while I fell in love with the rose(?) flavor, coated with what looked like... crushed toasted rose petals??? I believe that the kadafiyi is the shredded pastry (looks like crisp vermicelli noodles) and the burma pastries are the log shaped ones, though not 100% sure on that. Tried the walnut baklava (the diamond shaped one; They also sell another walnut baklava in a square shape), pistachio baklava, double pistachio baklava, walnut and pistachio burma, and a savory cheese flaky pastry. The sweets are located in a case by the register and sold by the pound. The pastries were flaky and chock full of nutty goodness. SX and I will be back to try and other sweets. Since my original post, Nazar has cut down on the produce and added a butcher. It's really full of stuff to explore like cherry nectar, sausages, nuts, candies, and more. But right now, I'm into the meat. I went back to Nazar Market last weekend looking to solve the problem from my last visit. Test driving Planet Barbecue by Steven Raichlen, I had followed a recipe by buying lamb shoulder and then grinding the meat in our food processor. The kebobs had delicious flavor, but they had chewy texture that we assumed came from gristle or other pieces attached to the meat. So when I went back to Nazar in Columbia, I wanted to be careful about my purchase. I talked slow. I want to buy lamb, I said. Lamb, the butcher agreed. I want lamb for ground meant, I said. Ground lamb, the butcher agreed. I want to make kabobs, I said, and the butcher nodded and got busy. He took meat from the cooler. He started to chop and slice meat from the bones. I walked away to shop, then returned to find that all those meat chunks had disappeared. That was when I realized that I was talking to the butcher across a meat grinder. A giant metal grinder the height of my chest. I had come to Nazar looking to repeat my mistake -- buy lamb shoulder and grind my own meat at home. But Nazar's butcher is a professional. He was grinding the meat himself. He cut exactly the meat that I needed, then ran it twice through the industrial grinder that I was too much of an amateur to even identify until it was spitting out perfect-looking ground meat. This is so easy that everyone should try some lamb kabobs. Nazar's butcher turned out ground lamb that developed a char on the outside while staying moist inside. A little more fat that my normal ground beef (like a little fire from dripping fat). But all the authenticity and safety of Laurel Meat Market's ground chuck -- plus a flavor that, if anything, is better than a hamburger. Planet Barbecue has several kabob recipes, and you can find ideas from three continents if you look on the Internet. read more

So this is mainly a Turkish grocery store, not necessarily Middle Eastern or Levantine. Probably won't matter much to the general public, but if you're looking for specific cheeses, olives or anything else - you probably won't find it here. I also went for the legendary butcher services but it seemed like they closed down that section. There was an empty dark display fridge in its place. I think they might still do special orders. They're over-priced in comparison to other ethnic grocery stores. Maybe to compensate for the convenient location in Columbia? I liked the specialty Persian spices for Ghormeh Sabzi etc... Last summer after returning from Antalya I looked around for the cheese my cousin and I ate with melon and olives. Nazar market has a delicious selection of white cheeses made from sheep, goat or cows milk as well as other choices of string cheeses etc. You will never buy feta from the supermarket again! Their butcher is tops, and will grind the lamb to your specifications. They also carry amazing black olives both pickled and salt dried... all are extremely reasonable! Looking for dried spices, like sumac or dried mint? Need a small host or hostess gift? I really dislike this grocery store. I saw their Ad and figured to try them out once, The place was too difficult to find, and I didn't find what I was looking for their selection of foods and other groceries is very limited and prices were much much higher compare to their competitions around, they are claiming their fish importing directly from turkey! lol it is a joke, there is no way possible to import fish every week from turkey you just deeply think about it and you will figure that's just a lie, I bet they are buying 'em from local fish store, mark it up more and rip people off by selling it as Turkish fish! and also their baklava ain't that unique they coming from Restaurant Depot (Jetro) my brother had a restaurant years ago and used to buy them very cheap there! read more

This is a great market. The meat is top quality and always fresh. The grocery items are all as authentic as you can get. Ive been to Turkey and Nazar has the same stuff that I found over there. The butcher's (I believe his name is Ali. You can see his picture above.) customer service skills with me are very poor. It is as if I am bothering him, and/or he does not want to sell the meat. I called to ask if they had liver, and he said yes. I drove there 10 minutes after I called and he said "sorry, we are out" with a shady smile. Told him I just called and he pretended to look at called ID and said: "No, sorry, we are out". Recently, I went in there, and he was the only one in there. The lights were off and he was drinking something out of a cup. He didn't even say hello when he saw me. Then, I asked for some ground beef and noticed he was not going to wear gloves. I asked him to wear gloves. He became annoyed and stated that he does not like to wear them because he cuts himself. He said he washed his hands before I came. I also asked him where an item was and he was annoyed to tell me. Then, the phone rang while he was still grinding the ground beef and was annoyed that he had to wash his hands again. I asked him for one more pound of ground beef. His response was his favorite line "sorry, I am out." I left without purchasing anything. On the brighter side of things, the couple that owns the place is very pleasant and helpful. The lady always has a genuine smile and talks to everyone when she is ringing them up. read more

I came here in 2013 with our Palestinian exchange student to look for familiar foods to stave off her home-sickness and she was happy to find za'atar, fine quality olive oil, dried apricot, cheese and labneh as well as proper ingredients for a number of different foods she missed. Even now I still go back for all those things plus the 2qt containers of plain whole milk yogurt, to-die-for samosas in the front case and all the other goodies I learned to love with our dear Balqees. Nazar Market is a dream come true for the Turkish people who live in the area. It's wonderful to walk into the store and feel like you're in a "bakkal", what we call the small neighborhood grocery stores in Turkey. Store owners are very friendly and will make every effort to get you what you're looking for. Even if they don't normally carry a particular product or brand, if you request it, they will find it if it's imported into the states by any of their vendors. I frequent their store for Turkish breakfast items like feta and tulum cheese, olives, simit bread, sucuk, teas and coffee, jams and helvas. My son always wants to stop there for the "tube chocolate"(nutella like Turkish hazelnut spread stuffed into a tube that you suck to eat), which makes me so happy since it was my favorite when i was his age. They also serve to the middle eastern and Mediterranean population with many items from regional brands. Americans who don't share the nostalgia I'm motivated by will also find many items to enjoy in this ethnic store. Turkish cuisine is famous for its red meat dishes like shish kebabs and meatballs with amazing spices. Even if you don't know how to put it all together yourself, you can ask their butcher to prepare it for you, so all you have to do is to grill it when you get home. read more
