Loved the concept of fast casual Chipotle-style Ethiopian food! The portions were generous and the price was right. We were first-timers and the server was not very helpful or welcoming, she kind of impatiently rushed us through the line even though there were only two people behind us. Checked out this place based on other reviews. We both had a delicious injera plate with lamb and other great sides. Celiac hubby had the gluten free injera (all teff) which was really gluten free. This place is kind of like Chipotle for Ethiopian food--fast casual, with an Ethiopian flair, instead of Mexican. You start with a base, then add a protein, sauces on the protein, and sides. I wouldn't say it's exactly like traditional Ethiop chow, which is usually stewed or simmered for a long time, but it's still quite tasty. The price is good too--you can fill yourself up for ten bucks. The first time I went with my GF the place was basically empty, possibly due to the ongoing ice storm. The fellow at the register was really nice--he hopped back into the (open) kitchen and put together a little platter of the sides for us to try, when we were deciding which sides we wanted on our meals. A+ for effort., and super friendly. Only minus was that they have two receptacles for rubbish and recycling, but they're not labeled. The register dude was kind enough to indicate what refuse went in which receptacle though. We'll be back! read more

Tried this place for the 1st time this weekend. Food is amazing no qualms there! You get to try a variety of dishes you otherwise might not have tried, all of which are super. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is cause while the food tastes really good, it doesn't taste authentic - I was left feeling like I had eaten something really delicious, but I didn't know what. The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is that we had to wait a long time before someone came to the counter to take our order, but overall we had a great experience and the food was fantastic. As our order was being placed, a second person came to the counter to assist - I believe he was a manager - and he was extremely helpful and friendly. Since this was our first visit, we weren't sure what the sauce options tasted like, so he made us a little plate of samples of food, including two sauces we were deciding between, without us even asking. Tons of great options here, including great vegan and vegetarian ones - we'll definitely be back! I just ate here while I waited for my oil change. My mouth is happy. Everything tasted so good and does not feel oily or overly salty. It is basically the Ethiopian version of the Roti or Cava model, which means if I am alone and craving Ethiopian food, I now have a great place to go. I found this establishment as it was near my car repair shop. I was surprised to see quick Ethiopian, as I've always eaten it in sit-down restaurants. The place is very clean and looks pretty nice inside. I had an injera plate $9.59. It took a only a few minutes for my order to finish. The food was good. The injera was cold though. They should probably warm it up to really make it like a sit-down restaurant. The soda machine was out of lemonade and iced-tea, but that is easily fixed. Overall, I would definitely come back the next time I get my car fixed. read more

Food is great. Service is terrible. Midday on a Saturday, they had just one staff member who ignored patrons waiting to order for more than fifteen minutes while she struggled to serve food. I started this review a long while ago, and at the time, I would have given it 4 stars. Now, I no longer go here (and it was the restaurant that inspired my new found love for Ethio cuisine), and instead visit another place down the street. Why the change? When I started going here, they did not have the "line", but prepped a lot behind the counter. They had a cold collards and cheese side that was wonderful. They always had drinks available, and the portions were great. Then, they changed things. It was the Chipotle model, where you select from troughs of food. The portions were smaller. They dropped the combined collards dish. Drinks would not work/be available, and things were not stocked. The food was not as fresh and tasty. So, the last time I tried to go here, I ended up walking out, and trying a new place that had just opened (so, I guess I can thank Ethio Express for pushing me to find a new place?). It's really sad, because I was really enthusiastic for this restaurant, but their quality control issues are just too much. read more

I used to go to an Ethiopian restaurant up the street in Silver Spring but would pay restaurant prices and it was alot for just take out. Ethio Express is just RIGHT! Now every time I have an appointment to get my Locs done...I have to go here. I got my husband and BFF hooked on it as well! I love the fact that it is owned by a husband and wife! Can't wait till they get big enough to open up a spot in NW DC, they would do well because of how they set up their menu-simple and fast. Ethiopian express food? I have to admit I was skeptical, but this clean and casual place has pretty much nailed it. We went on a Wednesday evening and found it was fairly quiet. I expect that to change. The location is slightly outside of the main downtown Silver Spring restaurant area but it's only a short walk and there's a public parking lot really close by, so it's easy to get to. The menu choices are easy to understand and the food was great. It seemed fresh and flavorful, not quite as oily as some Ethiopian food I have had before. For $10 a plate you get a tasty satisfying plate, so it's not exactly "fast food cheap", but still reasonable and I think we'll worth the price. Our party of 3 got variations on the injera plate. Our 14 Year old daughter substituted out the more spicy options and I swapped the beef for lamb. We all left happy and our daughter will be going for lunch today. Try this place, if you're new to Ethiopian food it's a great way to experiment, if you're not, it's a fresh twist on the dishes you already love. read more

Food is good but service is terrible. I called for a delivery order and was asked to wait on hold. After 5 minutes I hung up and called back, but the phone went to an automated message system. After 10 minutes and several more attempts, someone finally answered and my order was placed. The food took 2 hours to arrive, was cold, and there was no sauce included. I do not recommend ordering delivery or pick up from this restaurant- dine in only. It was Jan. 20th around 6:30 pm.
