I made an appointment online (granted, this was months out) and it made the process fairly easy. Basically, everyone with an appointment gets to skip the line. The people who didn't have appointments were called in by groups and their information was taken so that they could text them to come back in the afternoon. It's not a perfect system, but it kept people from just milling around for hours. I found all of the staff to be serious but professional. Particularly, the woman at the front desk was assertive but also helpful. She knew the answers to most questions and when someone didn't speak English she used Google Translate to make sure they understood. Moreover, when one person came in who appeared to be unhoused and didn't have a car or a phone to receive texts, she made an exception so that they wouldn't have to wait all day in the heat. I was in and out in under 30 minutes. Overall, I had mentally prepared for the worst and it wasn't so bad with an appointment. read more

I came to take a road test and I want to warn everyone about the woman who works at station 3. On paper I did great. I obeyed stop signs, used my mirrors, didn't run a single red light, and was never a danger on the road. I still failed. Why? Because this lady thought I "didn't have control of the vehicle". Because I didn't seamlessly apply pressure to the gas pedal and crept past stop signs to see beyond the curve, I was failed. She also failed me for ending up on the wrong side of the road after a three point turn (I was moreso in the middle of a residential street with no vehicles). Anyway, this lady failed me for things even experienced drivers do. No one is perfect yet that seems to be what she's looking for. read more

This is my experience as a walk-in with no appointment for a license renewal. Arrived at 8:05am (they open at 8am). I was in the door at about 9 and noticed they weren't using the first waiting room, the one before checking in. All appointments, even if they claimed to be late, went first. I was the 4th walk-in and my number was called at 11:20, waiting a total of 3hours and 20 minutes. The lady was nice and had a sense of sarcasm I personally feel fine with but others may not. I answered a couple questions and read the letters for a vision test. I was out of the door about 6 minutes later. Overall the staff were nice to me but if you weren't polite they're not afraid to reciprocate the respect, or lack thereof. I'm not too sure why it took so long but I think regardless of the time you walk-in they don't start calling them back until 11. It's your average dmv but has a lot of parking so I'd recommend this location over others. read more

Short black lady with the short hair was extremely rude to me. I took my adult special needs son in to renew his ID. He asked me to come back with him so I did. She started asking questions and he wasn't saying anything on some of them so I answered for him. She told me that "I wasn't giving him time to answer and to go back and sit in the lobby". Me , being the protective Mom I am, got pretty upset and told her if there was something he didn't know then he just wouldn't know it. Ticked me off highly. I know my son better than anyone. The Cary DMV has fantastic reviews so I initially went to that one as oppose to this one - WHAT A JOKE! I went to the Cary DMV and waited FOR FIVE HOURS and truly got nowhere. So I decided to go to this location on the same day! Went to this location on a Monday at 4:40PM and there was absolutely no one at the DMV except for me! This DMV has terrible reviews but I think it's honestly just the timing. The employees are just overworked and look overwhelmed. But nonetheless, they were great! I honestly just needed to get my REAL ID because I just moved from Florida and they got me out of there quick. Got there at 4:40PM, left at 5:06PM. Few things to bring with you if you just moved and you're trying to get your NC license. - Your previous Drivers License - Your social security - Your car insurance id WITH YOUR NAME ON IT - 2 Documentation WITH YOUR NAME ON IT (water bill, phone bill, etc.) - $40 Payment I honestly came in with 4 bills, my IDs, Social, Passport Card (And it came in handy because they did proceeded to ask for my Passport Card) It's better to TRULY have everything beforehand because you will lose your spot and have to come in another day! ALSO- they will take your picture for your new ID, and take an eye test. They'll test if you (still) know the signals and signs such as STOP sign, SCHOOL crossing, DO NOT PASS sign, etc. They can also register you to vote right there, ask if you want to be an organ donor, have you sign a couple of things and give you a temporary card until you get your real one in mail in 8-10 business days. Overall, it was truly a breeze and I'm truly happy with this DMV. read more

After driving across country and trying to get settled in to a new location me and my wife went to this DMV to attempt to get NC licenses. when we arrived we were told that there are 4 people in line and that is too many apparently and we were turned away. They probably wanted to close early or something. NC has many great qualities however their DMVs do not seem to be among them. read more

If it was up to me you wouldn't get a select rating but I will give a one star I came to the DMV in Smithfield NC on 301 two times today. The first I came I had to leave cause of other matters. Waited in line for 25 minutes just to turn a tag in but which I had mentioned I had to leave due to other matters. After that matter was taken care of I once again came back to the same DMV that is in my local town just to turn a tag in and waited in line for an extra additional 45 minutes just to turn a tag again. Why can't you have a line for certain things in the DMV instead of having just everybody standing in line like the way you have it. I understand that there is times you have to wait but 25 minutes and then 45 minutes for just a tag come on now be realistic here someone could have hollered out or spoke up and said anyone here with tags needs to be turned in because there was like four or five of us I was the last one with the tag. Y'all need to do something different. Some of us that had a turn and tag could have been on her lunch break from work. Got to do a little bit better than what you're doing. And every time you go into the DMV in Smithville on 301 a bright lever is always a new face there's been a couple new faces that didn't seem like they knew what they were doing. The black elder woman who checks for appointments & brings people into the building is extremely rude. It's ridiculous how nasty her attitude is, she was rushing everyone & nasty about it. I happen to have all my documents together so to be prepared & early as requested to be treated like a burden is disgusting. Then the black elder woman at lane 2 that completed my request was no better. I heard other workers in the cubicles beside me that were very welcoming & polite so it's not everyone. If I have the opportunity to do so I will never return to this DMV office. At the end of the day the stresses of the job can not be taken out on the public especially in the midst of the pandemic you don't know what people are facing. This dmv place is the racist and rudest service ever performed!!!! I visited this dmv yesterday around 3:45pm to file for my new ID. The lady that i was assigned to at booth number 5 was very racist and rude to me while performing her job in receiving my documents required. I showed her everything required for a brand new state ID! If your Asian don't ever go to this dmv with rude employees denying your right as a citizen to identification!!!!! This place deserves the worst rating ever!!! They don't deserve a single star rate but a negative rate below ZERO! That lady doesn't deserve this job! All of this was very poor services I received yesterday! It is just sad and very hurtful! To the lady who did poor job and service in denying my right as a citizen to identification, you deserve to get fired and be black listed from customer service!!!! Would give 5 stars for the courtesy of the folks here. Very helpful, eager to help and not at all rude like some of the other DMV's. However the overall rating goes way down for the speed of the service which is very very slow. Check out the DMV sloth scene from Zootopia to get an idea of what I mean. Had to go twice to the DMV because the first time due to some glitch they couldn't process my license renewal. Overall spent atleast 3 hours each time! Each day the queue starts well before 7 am which is insane. Get there at 8am when they open and expect to see 50 people in front of you! Worst experience at a DMV ever!! I arrived at 8am, and there was a line stretched to the parking lot. Walk into the building and find another line in the waiting area, then enter the DMV & there is another line where you must get a number from someone behind a desk. That took an hour and 15 min. I must be at work at 10am, so I asked how long did she think the wait might be and was told "I don't know maybe an 50 min or an hour." This is the most ridiculously run DMV I have ever been to, my number is only 5 people away and I might have to come back and do this all over again . 12/21/23, I arrived in line at 3pm to the Durham Miami Blvd location. First off, they had customers standing outside in the cold waiting for HOURS to get inside while the office inside was empty. A woman came out every once in a while to bring in about 5 people at a time. At 4:30 she came out saying if you were there for license renewal to come inside because she only had 30 minutes left. I was at the very front of the line and she never asked what I was there for until I said something to her about letting every single person behind me in first. I was there to transfer a drivers license from another state and she said she did not have enough time. I pointed out that she just let 6 people in front of me. She told me I could stand outside and wait if I wanted to but I won't be seen, then closed the door in my face. I went inside afterwards looking for the bathroom before leaving (mind you I waited almost 2hrs outside) and the same woman came to me and asked why I was inside and if I came in to "see how many people were in there" while showing me the bathroom. Extremely rude and unprofessional! After I finished in the restroom I saw that she was letting in a lady from outside to be serviced so I asked if something changed and I could be seen, then she told me "might as well you're already in here". She ordered another lady to "take this one here" (me). The new lady rolled her eyes and told me they don't process these things so late. I complained about not being made aware of this while waiting outside in the cold and overlooked and she said that they were short staffed. Needless to say I went home upset. The whole situation was uncalled for. I am not upset about not being able to leave with my license however, I was taken aback by how disrespectfully the staff treated the customers that were there patiently waiting to be serviced. read more

Probably one of the best DMVs in the area or atleast the very first DMV where I have had a positive experience. Here's what I felt: Courtesy & Service: 5 stars Wait time: 3.5 stars Get here EARLY. The DMV opens on the dot at 8 AM but one would find a long queue at that time. So, better to get here at least 45 mins before their opening time if you want to avoid waiting later. The officers who work here are very courteous and friendly. There was a glitch in their system on the day I visited and I had to go back again after a couple of days. Even though I waited in line for my appointment, I was able to meet the same officer who handled my case earlier without having to wait longer. Ensure that you look online as to what documents are required for your case and have them ready to avoid a lot of back and forth. The customer service at this DMV is definitely much better than the ones I have experienced. As long as you have all you documents in place, you should be in and out of here in no time. If you live in the Raleigh-Durham area, this DMV very well might be the best one to visit. read more

If I could give the DMV no stars, I would do it. This location is the one where I have had perpetual issues. I've waited in line for over four HOURS, and been no closer to accomplishing what I needed than when I arrived. Or waited in line for multiple hours, and then been informed "oh, sorry, our camera is broken and has been all day; if you hurry to (other location), maybe you can get your license today." This was the worst experience my wife and I have ever had with any sort of licensing. Miles, the female working, was extremely rude. She expected us to know everything there was with getting a new license. As newly weds who just moved across the country, we were unsure how this process worked. When I asked Miles questions, she wouldn't even answer me and rolled her eyes. She wouldn't look me in the eye. She said one-word sentences, like "license" or "security card" and expected me to hand her over everything like a slave. Besides the terrible customer service from Miles, we waited nearly 2 hours to get a number!! There were 10 people in front of us (which is relatively short) and we waited 2 hours to receive our number. After that, we sat and waited another 45 minutes. It's sad that this is the process all of us have to go through in order to get our license here in the state of North Carolina. read more

So bad! They know everyone there requires a document and has no choice but to be there. They treat everyone as dirt or less than that. If they worked for a private institution, I'm pretty sure none of them would have a job with their attitude. While they work in slow motion in the cool air conditioning and have empty chairs and available queues inside, outside there is a long line that last hours, out in the hot sun. And you might wait for 6 or more hours and they will say they are done for the day at 4:30 PM because the computers are "shut down for the day". It doesn't matter you waited for 6-8 or more hours in the sun. Online appointment are more than 2-3 months away. How does the State of North Carolina expect new residents to obtain new documents within 30 days of moving to the State? Honestly I would challenge our legislators to go incognito to this and other DMV location to try to get a driver's license. They would start a review of this location and the DMV procedures right away. And to think our taxes pay for their salary. Incredible. read more

The woman assigned for my daughter's road test berated her before the test even began because she wasn't wearing a mask. She covered our car seat in plastic, ordered my daughter to remove a lint roller on the floor of the passenger seat and then had the gall to leave her trash bag covering the seat in my car. Proceeded to complain about the comfort of the seat through the 7 minute "road test". Her exact words were "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GIVE YOU A ROAD TEST IF YOU'RE NOT WEARING A MASK". Keep in mind, masks are not required at the DMV. She yelled at her for starting the car before she said it was okay and then yelled at her for not turning the car off when they arrived back at the parking lot even though my daughter thought she literally had to wait for each instruction. The instructor's report was falsely embellished and then gave the task of another employee to give us the results. She couldn't even stand by her work. No integrity, no explanation of why/how she graded her report, just sat behind her cubicle while I tried to plead a case to another DMV worker and the office supervisor. She was also rude to another 5-6 people during our 40 minute wait even though we had an appointment and was 15 minutes early for said appointment. The one DMV worker that was tasked to give us her result did have compassion and could tell from his body language he has to deal with this woman's antics and probably wasn't the first time she's done this. The supervisor seemed like he had bigger things to care about and hardly listened to my complaint and just explained what the laws were of what she "failed". Basically, the women was extremely biased in her judgment and failed her before the test even began. Letting her political beliefs impact her job performance and not giving a fair opportunity. Supervisor said I could come back to retake the test in 7 days, but we'd probably get the same "instructor". No thanks, I'll spare my life by not having to go back to Durham and spare the respect I have for myself and family to not have a pear shaped diabetic that'll likely die from heart disease within a year and can't fit in a Chevy Equinox disrespect myself or show civility toward others who are just looking to take care of business. read more

Have to say this is the worst place ever to go to a DMV. They discriminate against people of the opposite race. Our number was called and went up and the extremely rude woman out her hand in our face and said go back you weren't called. Then they proceeded to call other numbers after us so we were stuck in a que forever. We went to ask what the hold up was and why numbers after us were being called and left? We were told there was some kind of mistake and they will work on it. Then the two year old woman was upset that my daughter dropped the paperwork on her desk and it slid towards her. Her two year old response was she wasn't a dog and she had to call her supervisor. They mute supervisor came over and said nothing and handed our paperwork to the next desk. So if your not the same race as the workers they will treat you like your invisible or try and bully you. This place needs to be blown up and a whole new staff that has customer service experience and does not discriminate against you based on your race should be put in. All lives matter regardless of race so move on people! read more

There's always a line, appointments are scarce, staff are fairly nice considering the reputation the DMV has. CASH ONLY! There's no check, no credit cards, no debit cards, no ATMs, etc. BRING CASH. "Do you know you can make an appointment for the DMV?" Dozens of people have parroted to me. Yes, I do know. However, when you call this branch to make an appointment they will tell you there are no free times pretty much for the next two weeks. And then four weeks ahead, they'll have an 8am slot open. I show up at 7:50 and it turns out the DMV doesn't open until 8am. So I'm out waiting in a line (yes, a line already forms before the DMV even opens) for my 8am appointment. The doors open at 8:05am. I say I have an appointment, I'm given a number and told to wait. Bottom line, just show up at 8am anyways. One time I showed up at 2pm and waiting two hours. You're not allowed to bring beverages inside so I got pretty thirsty. Also make sure to check the website beforehand so you have all your documents. They are very strict on the documents. I've been to the DMV five times in the past 2 months and I have seen many people turned away because they were missing one seemingly trivial document. I admire the staff for having the mental fortitude for working here. I go slightly mad just visiting this place 5 times. read more

NO STARS!!!!! I only gave one because I had to at least pick one. I went to the 201 W. Arrowood Road location in CLT to renew my license to a RealID. It expires on Sunday. When I walked in the woman bellowed out "no walk-ins. Appointments only". I hesitantly approached and asked "so there are never any walk-ins at this location?" to which she replied "no". Went back to my office and called the main DMV number like I was going to make an appt and got a human (I think) and asked the question "which locations take walk-ins?". She said "they all do from 7-8 Monday through Friday". I told her not the Arrowood Road location. She said (with attitude) "Ma-am they all do". So then I went back to the Arrowood Road location and asked the same employee about walkins. She said "we never know if we will have enough staff so we don't have walk-ins". I asked "is there anyway I can check?" She said "no". She said the people in the office answering the phones have no idea of the staffing issues at the locations. I overhead another employee tell someone else that they did open at 7:00 but people start lining up at 4:00 a.m. It's anyone's guess. So, my review is to help you understand that unless you have an appt. (the soonest one is in April) you are not getting a RealID anytime soon. I think I'll just apply for a renewal and get a RealID when it's mandated. I get the short staff. It seems to be everywhere. I don't get the lack of real communication online, on the phone or in person. Good luck. read more

Avoid this place. Trust me. I've spent FOUR HOURS here just for transferring my driver license from the other state. Once I tried to stand up and stretch my legs, but I wasn't allowed to do so. The staff... OMG THATS A NIGHTMARE. I told her that my documents were already copies and she did not have to copy all of them. She said "You don't need to know what I am doing, alright?" Overall, not a bad experience. The ladies were very helpful as I moved here from California. I waited for my number to be called and then had to leave to get cash. But I was able to come back and go to the same lady to have her finish helping me. Then a quick photo and I was outta there! They only take cash and checks, no debit cards. I've been on the phone for numerous hours and days for the same issue which remains unresolved due to employees who are abusing their powers and unprofessionally taking out personal issues on the customers.
