I was initially trying to get grass growing in my shaded patch with two vigorous dogs, and he was willing to do it, but told me it wouldn't last and gave me good advice to go with mulch instead (which was also cheaper). TJ came to our house to do a free consultation and spent a significant amount of time walking me through all the issues in our yards and answering random questions I had about my plants. He was so knowledgeable! So we hired him right away and he did a fantastic job on our yards! Some reviews discuss his lack of responsiveness to emails, which is something we encountered. But I just emailed him a reminder email and he responded! So you may have to be a bit persistent but it is SO WORTH IT. He came out himself to do the job and charged a very fair rate. Originally contacted Sept 2017 for help with crabgrass taking over the lawn and dying grass. Consultation recommended aerating, thatch removal, weed kill and fertilizer, seeding, and top dressing for $250, so be it we accepted. From initial contact to service performance was Sept 7th to Sept 25, a little slow but not really an issue. Followed watering and care advice but it wasn't very specific, had to follow up the end of Oct to find out next steps because almost none of the seed was growing. Took a few emails and 10 days of waiting as it had "slid off his mind" to get acknowledgment. After another visit, he reseeded and said it was a combination of too much watering and birds eating the seed, this time he added straw as well. By this point, it was Oct 30 so we would have to wait till next spring for results. Come next Spring (now) and still none of the grass seed has taken. I followed up with Tj to ask if he can please help fix the situation and his response was that there is no guarantee on growing grass seed and to offer me sod at 50% off. Even mentioned our last correspondence was October as if that was somehow my fault, was I suppose to send him updates over the winter? Take it for what it's worth, that was my experience. The crab grass is gone so that was a win but for $250 I was hoping for a lot more. Update 5/31/18: Received a 50% refund for my troubles. read more

TJ did an amazing job on our yard. After years of neglect, our newly purchased home was in serious need of some curb appeal. I'd ripped out most of the jungle, but quickly realized that finishing the job was going to be too much for me to handle. That's where TJ and Neighborly Lawns came in. He came out a few days after me emailing to give us a quote, his prices were fantastic, and he did the job just a few days later. He cleared our yard of hardened soil, removed old landscaping fabric, transplanted a bush, edged out flower beds, and laid 200 sq ft of sod just beautifully. He also worked on a Saturday for us, since we were out of town, so that our new sod wouldn't go unwatered! Truly a fantastic small company that does great work. I guess they don't want my business and don't care about customer service or wasting customers time. I contacted them about some landscape/lawn work/ongoing yard maintenance and informed them that I heard about them on Yelp. Tony responded a few days later that he was on vacation and when he would be back. I wrote again when he returned and he sounded interested. He even said he lived nearby. We went back and forth evening trying to sort out a time to meet for an estimate. Based on the timing for the work, I explained the estimate would need to be done without me being present. Tony said that was fine. I sent over detailed photos with descriptions of precisely needed to be done and how he could contact me if he had any questions. After all of that communication and effort, Tony never provided a quote. I even offered a few weeks later the potential to meet in person. Tony never replied. If I knew he/the company was never going to provide an estimate, I would never bothered contacting them. read more

When I first emailed I got a response within 2 days asking if I was free the following week. I responded right away and then heard nothing. When the day suggested came I emailed again and heard nothing. My friends recommended this company so I tried once more, no response. They got good reviews from my friends and from NextDoor but I couldn't actually get them to come to our place. Maybe because we needed lawn mowing/weeding and they wanted to do bigger, more expensive projects? I think that's fair but they should be upfront instead of not responding. I do have larger landscaping needs but if I can't even get a response for basic services I don't feel comfortable shelling out for more complex and expensive projects. Later on when I told my friend about my experience she said "yea you have to email him 3-4 times but he does good work!" I don't really have time to follow up with people that much but apparently she thinks the work quality is worth it. read more

I have never been moved to write a review before, but this is the kind of business that deserves a 5 star rating and that people should know about. I've lived in my house for 13 years and the front and back yards have been left natural. A friend would clean and plant a few times a year, but the yard really reflected our peculiar tastes. And the back yard -- forget about it. An unholy mess. Well, the house is going on the market and, you know, curb appeal and all that. Enter Neighborly Lawns. We shared our dilemma with TJ. TJ is totally solutions oriented and, rather than selling us a whole bunch of new stuff, suggests replanting much of what we have and adding to it. He took into account our neighbor's yard and planted in such a way that we, indeed, now have a neighborly lawn. TJ and and his crew, including the wonderful Keith, cleaned out two or three truckloads of trash, trimmed trees, replanted, added new plantings, created a patio space, mulched, sodded, and probably lots of other stuff I don't know to mention. The front of the house is beautiful, and the back yard looks like a putting green. We had mulch and sod in our driveway and bags all over the lawn, but the only remaining sign they were here is a front and back yard I can't stop staring at. These guys take true pride in their work.
