This dude is totally unreliable!! I contacted this business about 3 weeks ago to have a really small masonry job done. And are not small jobs the reason one hires a handyman to do the job because a licensed contractor generally will not do a small job? Anyway, I ended up speaking with Lora, and explained what I needed done. She stated that Neil is booked up until the end of July. (The conversation was on 5/25.) I said that's fine, was in no hurry to get the job done. She then said to send pictures, measurements, a description of what needed to be done. So, I did all that: sent pictures, measurements, description, etc. I sent all that in a text message to her. I even confirmed that Neil is booked until the end of July and that was fine. Also asked, in the text, if possible, please let us know, within the next few days if Neil will do the job and the cost. About 5 minutes later, Lora texted back that she will check with Neil and let me know. All this can be verified in the text message I have attached to this review. Three weeks come and go, I get NOTHING from anyone associated with this unreliable business! Lots of talk, but no action! No response! A few other Yelpers have reported the same problem! I'll start with the TL;DR version - Neil really cares about craftsmanship taking pleasure in both doing things right, as well as ensuring it's aesthetically pleasing. He is wonderful guy who is extremely respectful of your home and follows your rules, way above and beyond my wildest expectations. I would highly recommend him for your needs. Now on to the nitty gritty: What was way above my expectations: Neil took home rules to the next level. We are a shoes-off household as we like to keep a neat home, but also because my wife suffers from severe allergies. Without even needing to be asked, as soon as I brought Neil into my home and I began to take my shoes off, he brought out his own shoe covers. But wait! It does not stop there! He, without missing once, never stepped foot into our home without a shoe covering and never once wore a shoe covering for even one step outside my home for an entire week. My home office literally sat within 15 feet of where the majority of his work took place as well as my front door, so I saw it all. This man was doing ballet pirouettes to grab tools from my patio. On top of this, Neil was extremely respectful (and playful) about the number of phone calls I take daily. Unfortunately, due to remote working, I am on video calls with clients, vendors, and staff for 6-7 hours daily. Neil was always cognizant of this and when needing to do the loudest of his work, he would silently check in with me to let me know - quite honestly, he did not have to do this, but it goes to show how thoughtful, respectful, and professional Neil is, and I appreciated that he read the room and gave me some playful crap for these long hours of phone calls! He cleaned up each and every day, would check in with me, and let me know when to expect him the next day as well. We spent about a week with Neil in our home and he really felt like having a member of the family there. After the first couple of days without him around after job completion, my wife and I both felt like something was missing! Lastly, his work and dedication to making things exactly the way you want them is fantastic and hopefully the before and after pictures speak for themselves. We had him take out an old bathroom vanity and light fixture and replace it with a new one, install new bathroom hardware, remove and refinish all interior doors, as well as the framing around it. We weren't able to get more elevated framing due to the tight corners in our home, but Neil crafted new custom frames as you can see our old frames were a battered mess. What could be improved: Neil is really, really great at what he does! If you have a vision, I have no doubt in my mind that he can execute that vision. Where we got into a little bit of trouble was with scope. As Neil is a one-man show, he rightfully outsources his costing to his business partner Lora. She's a bit of a "bulldog" (but in a good way) and you can tell she has a wonderful heart as well (Neil is such a nice guy that without Lora I could see him getting taken advantage of constantly). But where I ran into trouble is that I don't know proper terminology for what I was asking for. I could explain what I wanted to see, but I couldn't explain the steps involved. I believe if Neil had the time to come out to evaluate the job beforehand (and if this wasn't during COVID), we could have avoided some of the back and forth on why things began to cost a little more. With that said, Neil, Lora, and I were able to have great discussions, I learned a little bit about construction/renovations, and why what I was asking for Neil to do was not necessarily within the scope of what I had originally described. Also, through some dumb luck, the job ended up pretty much on budget anyway! Summary: At the end of the day, you're working with a small business. You get the benefits of a true professional who cares about his craft and the quality of work he provides. I definitely don't think Neil has the cheapest rates in town, but I believe that you get more than fair value and I would recommend you give him a call if you're interested in any small to medium renovations. read more

Neil was the fourth person we had out to give us suggestions and an estimate to replace/ rebuild three large wooden storage closets that are on the outside of the back garage wall on our deck. Neil came by and instantly knew what had to be done to meet our requirements. My partner found Neil through Yelp and his reviews. We looked at each other and immediately hired him for this job. He actually made tongue in groove cedar doors that he stained. They are beautiful and better than we imagined they could look. He built shelves for our paint supplies and also installed a garage A/C with venting through the back wall into the closet. We then asked Neil for an estimate to gut, repair and install wood shelving in a closet space next to our fireplace. They look so beautiful. We told Neil we won't let him go and after the holidays we have vanities in two bathrooms to replace and blend in with the existing decor plus a large 2-room master bath paint job and refurbishing its two vanities. This year I started the huge project of renovating my 1960's home. I met with many handymen and to be honest many were trying to quote me crazy prices or they spoke down to me. After several attempts over more than a year to schedule and retain an appointment that worked for both of us (thank you Lora!), Neil came through with flying colors to repair water-damaged subflooring and install a new toilet in my father's primary bathroom. My dad's insistence on having the 50-plus year old vinyl tile that he had proudly installed placed back the way it was AFTER Neil had already installed new vinyl tile would have been a no-go for anyone else. However, Neil is not just anyone and he not only recovered the old tiles intact from what should have been their next to last resting place (a dumpster) but was able to put everything back in place over the new tile and restore the entire floor to my dad's satisfaction. Neil's Handyman Services is a handyman service I can recommend. They are very professional, have very good communication, and will be very fair with their estimate for the job. I contacted them for a bathroom renovation, and they were able to give me a quote based on listed work and didn't need to see the actual bathroom (hey, Covid), just photos I emailed of the space. I asked several companies for quotes, and Neil's estimate came back in the same range as the others, so they will definitely NOT overcharge or try to pull a fast one on you. The only reason I didn't pick this handyman was that I found one who wanted to do the work for an extremely lowball fee -- totally not in line with what other handymen were quoting me. I may regret this choice, time will tell. I will still recommend Neil's for all of the pre-job communications, especially for Lora, who worked outside regular business hours to get back to me with quotes and updates. Lora and Neil have become like family to us. Without them, we would have been in a terrible situation. We are the Texas family who moved to California and bought a condo that had multiplying problems by the day. Neil and Lora saved us from a perpetual money pit and a financial disaster. In the process of fixing one thing, another problem came up, and so on, and we needed to move in by a certain date. So Neil and Lora begged other customers to let them have more time to take care of our condo, and we want to thank those customers for understanding. In the process, Neil and Lora were working 14 hour days, 7 days a week just to finish so we could move in. They did this at a personal loss because they saw how someone had taken advantage of us and they wanted to help. The whole condo had to be renovated. Now it looks like a luxury hotel. We unfortunately had another handyman who installed our skylights but left the interior a disgrace. The wood was mismatched, had large gaps, and generally looked like an elementary wood project.
