Darn you Canada! Darn you and your insane good ability to have foods made better than in the Yay Area! Ha ha ha! You'll know why I'll type this in a bit. Cochon Dingue, The Crazy Pig in French, is a chain of Quebec Provence French restaurants that according to their site combines bistro refinement with the feel of a local laid back atmosphere. It just so happens that I'm typing a review for the original location on Quebec City's Champlain and Traversiers intersection. Of course, you'll see both English and French on the menus, and I felt bad that my French is horrible as I visited Quebec City and Montreal, but remember. San Jose and the Bay Area as a whole is a Spanish speaking city area given its history, not French, and while I'm at it, Tagalog and Spanish are way more similar than Tagalog and French. It is nice that the Toronto cousin driving us around can still speak it to a point though. Before I forget, do realize that though there are two entryways, only one of them is really walkable, as the other's closed off. As I insert the old "Yes guys, the ladies are cute" and "Yes ladies, the guys are cute" statements pair, I notice how the place has that simple old school French charm, and I get that hospitality that will always stick with me. I wish I can remember what drink I had as it is pretty, but I do remember ordering a Quebec City pork sandwich (I need to coordinate after all as Mr. John Witherspoon would have wanted) and a pavlova dessert along with the group ordering a deluxe poutine. Oh, remember the "Darn you and your insane good ability to have foods made better than in the Yay Area!" statement I typed up, the second statement of this review? This is in regards of the pavlova. So, the first time I had a pavlova was at an Oakland/Berkeley Japanese restaurant called Iyasare (which I actually reviewed). I told our server that I had a pavlova in/near Oakland, and she asked me to see if theirs is better. Normally, I don't like nuts of some sort with berries in desserts, but this place made me actually like the format because a pavolva isn't so much of a guilt dessert, and with this in mind, I developed now the fondness of nuts with fruits with low guilt/guilt free desserts. I still don't like nuts with fruits in desserts, but that now only applies to guilty desserts. Our server went back to our table and asked if she and everyone else at Cochon made a better pavlova than the one at Iyasare. Seeing that I couldn't lie because Canada, I told her yes, which had her giddy. Go be giddy young lady! Yay Canada getting another food victory! The flaw. Seeing that "They made a better pavlova than my fellow Yay Area residents!" isn't a legit flaw, though my one visit was and is memorable, the one flaw the various locations have in general if I should even call it one is that they add Swiss cheese to their Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. I get that it's to have a healthy cheese, and French is spoken in Switzerland, but adding Swiss to the sandwich is a Philadelphia no-no. Cochon Dingue is quite a fabulous place. If it weren't for the perfect score Toronto places I reviewed, Fran's and Makilala (as Tsujiri is shown all over Canada, which is why I didn't type it up), this would have been my favorite Canadian restaurant. To Canadian residents not in Toronto, I'm sorry that none of your beloved restaurants will ever be my top Canadian spot, but remember. Toronto has the most Filipinos of all of your cities, and of course, I'll have that attachment like they do. At least you can hang your hat on how you have a place that makes a better pavlova than my fellow Bay Area residents! Stopped here for lunch during our tour with about 50 minutes to eat before catching our St. Lawrence River cruise. After a long morning, I was starving and needed something substantial. I ordered the half rack of ribs, which was a mixed bag. The flavor was good, but several ribs were so burnt they were completely inedible--straight to the discard pile. They came with a well-dressed Caesar salad featuring seasoned croutons and delicious shaved bacon, plus sliced fried potatoes that were crispy and not greasy in the least. The thick layer of BBQ sauce wasn't quite my style--I'm a dry rub girl--but I was too hungry to care much. No photos because I devoured everything. My dining companion had a chicken sandwich she raved about. She ordered a Nordic spritz while I indulged in some Quebec cider. Honestly, I expected more pork options given the restaurant's name, but they fed us quickly and efficiently, which was exactly what we needed. No real complaints except for those burnt ribs. We sampled a bunch of different menu items. The classic beef tartare, one of the listed favourites, can be divisive and not for everyone. Personally, it was a treat for me trying out something different, but I do not think everyone would appreciate its almost raw meat and liver-like texture. The Tartare comes with fries, a salad, and crouton to round up the order. We upgraded the side of fries that came with the Tartare into their Tout Cochon poutine. I was happy with that option that way I was able to sample their house poutine without needing to dedicate a full meal order for it. I can say this was among the best poutines I have had. The gravy was rich and flavourful. The poutine was also loaded with a variety of different proteins like the Gaspor farm ham and the bacon-wrapped sausage. The perron cheese curds also perfectly topped off the whole dish. Our last order was the Quebec pork chop marinated and grilled with maple and tamari. It was served with apple chutney, sweet potato mash, and seasonal vegetables. It is exactly as you would expect with the ingredient details of the dish's name. You get a lot of different flavour profiles and textures with the meal order. Some saltiness with the pork chop then some sweetness with the apple chutney. Meaty tenderness with the pork chop, mushiness with the potato mash, and then some slightly crunchiness with the seasonal vegetables. We dined on Sunday lunchtime the day before Family Day. There were people waiting to be seated by the time we arrived, but fortunately our group of only 2 people has a table spot available so did not need to wait. It comes with one or two eggs, bread ( you can choose from white, wheat bread, bagel, baguette, etc.) and fries, which you can change to their breakfast poutine with additional $5! Since I love poutine, I changed my fries to their poutine and it was definitely worth it. The portion was huge that I had shared with my family, even then, we couldn't finish all lol There was bacon, sausage and chicken in the poutine, with hollandaise sauce on top, it was delicious! We went to Cochon Ginque with a party of 6 on 2026-Aug-10. There was no beer. There was no draft and only one actual bottled beer and three no-al beer. Wine was overpriced at $11 for a small glass. The salmon on the menu for $32 was not as pictured. The portion was half and the actual served was not at all as offered on the menu. Grabbed a Friday night dinner reservation during our trip up north and was met with friendly service. We were greeted at the door and taken to our seats promptly even though we arrived a bit earlier than our scheduled time. We got the petite poutine, ribs, and spaghetti and all in all we found everything pretty good. It was our first time trying poutine and thought they were good as well. They have a nice wine selection so was able to enjoy a few glasses with our meal. The place itself is cute and the restaurant is located on the beautiful Chamberlain street. Hot meant it's warm and not cold and definitely not spicy at all. I can't say I am a huge fan of cheese curds, unless they are deep fried. The Philly cheesesteak wasn't bad. Hot chicken here is not spicy, just warm chicken. Brioche bun is just the chicken on a slice of brioche bread is all. I ate the bits of chicken and slaw. Service was fantastic. Randomly walked into this restaurant on the advice of my wife. Has a lot of rabbit on the menu, but we decided to have the salad with the salmon on top and the walleye. This restaurant is probably the best thing I've tried in my entire trip in Canada. The service alone was amazing. I accidentally made a reservation for 2, even though I meant to put 3 and the hostess was happy to make changes with no hesitation. She was nice, friendly, and extremely welcoming. The restaurant inside is so modern and clean, it was pleasing to look at. As for food, my parents and I ordered the Breakfast Poutine and lac st -Jean omelette to share. Everything was SO tasty and not too salty. My parents are picky when it comes to food that is too salty, so this was perfect for them. I highly recommend the breakfast poutine, that was my personal fave. 10/10 would recommend to anyone traveling to Old Quebec. read more

My main was the 170g steak with peppercorn sauce and fries. I asked for medium rare and was more of a medium but that was okay. The steak was okay nothing special and the sauce was overall pretty good. Nothing about this dish I loved but I didn't hate it either. Finally we got the vanilla crème brûle for dessert. This was out of this world good! It was so creamy and sweet and the sugar on top was crusted perfectly! Overall this place was what we wanted and there wasn't anything necessarily wrong with it. We came for an early dinner in mid-August. We ordered the veal flank steak, pork chop and roasted trout. The veal was very tender and flavourful. The pork chop was delicious with the sweet mashed potatoes. The roasted trout was tender and moist. The serve allowed us to order the roasted trout from the table d'hote menu as if it was from the a la carte menu. That was a nice of him. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. Always topping up our water. The restaurant was clean and had a cozy atmosphere. For desert, the 3 of us shared the creme brulee and crazy royal cake. It was so good ! Wow ! Just wow ! Currently finishing my meal . I ordered a pear mimosa and got the Lac St.Jean omelette which comes with a side of toast ( apple butter( strongly recommended ) or house ham made from strawberries and raspberries) and fried potatoes . All breakfast items come with unlimited coffee or one cappuccino or cafe au lait . Juice however is not included . Although the food didn't look like much when it arrived it was truly one of the best breakfast meals I've had. The omelette was fluffy and creamy due to the cheese curds which also provided a slight sharp taste to the overall dish . All of the ingredients within the omelette were also perfectly cooked . The potatoes remind me of the style I cook at home as they use scallions to season them and we're super delightful . The apple butter was as another user said is the best apple butter you will ever have in your life . Super fresh and tart and smooth . If you love apples / apple sauce you will love this . Pear mimosa was the second best mimosa I've ever had in my life . Service was great . Mølanie my server was super friendly and patient with me with all of the questions I had . Please note they really don't do substations or modifications . Also street parking which is paid is competitive as it's located right near the ferry and the edge of old Quebec near the fornicular ( super touristy area ). The worst item was the tap water I was served . I don't believe it was filtered and actually tasted like terrible tap water .But to be fair I am a water snob and it's unfair to deduct points for that . Total came out to be 42 Canadian with tax and tip, which is about $ 31 usd . Not cheap ... especially for breakfast. Talk about a pricey dinner for such tiny food! It is tasty, but I paid way too much for what seemed like pub food. I also felt largely ignored because I was one person and was overshadowed by larger groups ahead of me. On a positive note, I got a free appetizer as my server accidentally gave me someone else's order of wings thinking it was mine. Oh well, free food is great! There was no air circulation, by the end of the our meal, we were all dripping in sweat. There were so many flies inside the restaurant and in the bathrooms which is extremely gross. Our waitress was attentive in refilling the water but service for the food was extremely slow. When we finally did get our food, we had to keep swatting the flies around the area which made the whole experience unpleasant. You can order 1-2 eggs for your Benedict, which I feel every restaurant should give this option. The potatoes that came with it were wonderful. Found this spot about our wear about as in Quebec. We decided to try it and ordered the Poutine and falafel. My boyfriend loved the poutine although he did comment he wished they were made with smoked meat vs the sausage. I had the falafels. Personally best falafels I've had. The marinara sauce is lemonishy which gives it a good kick and the linguine is mixed with veggies, delicious. Came to eat on 7/11/26 about 7:45pm. Sitting was prompt. The waitress took our orders. Grilled chicken breast with yam. Chicken burger and a salad. Waited and waited. 1/2 hour passed by. At 45 min. Flagged the waitress down and asked her about the food. She apologized and said it would be out in 1 min. Saw people came in way after us and had their food served. I wanted to leave but my husband wanted to give them benefit of the doubt. After 1 hour, waitress came again and said it will be around 2 min for the food and offer us free dessert after the meal. In total 1hr 15 min later, food came out, looking like an 8 year old kid just made the meal. A small overcooked pieces of chicken, a bite size cornbread and raw pieces pile pan fried yams. I could not even swallow the pieces of chicken bc it was so dry. Left most of the food on my plate. My husband chicken burger was dry also, but he managed to swallow down most of it.
