Yelp Challenge! Started 8/20/2011 (39 of 365). I have a lot of catching up to do! Dude. This place is awesome! They have anything and everything you could absolutely need and want; TAX FREE! I recently came here w/ my cousin who is in the Navy. Yes, you need someone from the military to get you in. I bought a beautiful couch for $700, tax free! I purchased other items in the Exchange as well. Prices aren't too bad. But then I went to the Commissary. Whoa! Super cheap prices for groceries and again, TAX FREE! And they have EVERYTHING! Make sure you tip your baggers because they will load up your trunk for you as they do make their money off your tips! We also ate at Burger King there. They have other food options like Popeye's Chicken, Sbarro, Baskin Robbins and Charley's subs. This place is pretty cool; definitely better than other bases I have been to. read more

Went to the chapel for a wedding. The experience was streamlined and easy. They had a map ready for us which was awesome. I don't know really how to rate a base but it was so easy. Just have your ID handy and FYI you can't just go in for any reason. read more

This seems like a pretty good base. I was tdy for two weeks. It's pretty easy to find your way around and it's not too crowded. BX and food court are pretty good. It's very hot... Wouldn't want to do a PT test here. The area right off base is a shit hole! Tons of shady people and drug dealers. read more

It was my third year attending the amazing Aviation Nation in Las Vegas. Veterans Day 2012 was extra special for me. This is one of the best free annual family orientated events that people can go to in Las Vegas. Usually, getting onto an Air Force Base takes a lot of time and you have to know someone to get in. With free parking and bus shuttle service, there really isn't a reason not to go. The amount of technology in some of the airplanes can not be matched anywhere else on the planet. The Thunder Birds are key to the entire weekend show. They are based out of Nellis Air Force Base and perform over 50+ shows around the country every year. It was announced on Sunday November 11, that it was their 61st and final show for the season. If you've ever seen the Blue Angels, you must see the Thunder Birds. Their aerial acrobatics are choreographed like something you might see out of a Cirque Du Soleil show. There are always surprises and new things to discover. This year they had on display several unmanned drone aircraft equipped with ordinance. Last year I saw a stealth bomber up close. Aviation Nation air show in Las Vegas, is the only way to get access to this amount of aviation's past, present and future! read more

Front gate traffic is awful. The Sec Fo airmen don't even great you and they all look miserable all the times I've came through. Base is okay. Traffic lanes etc are awful. The chow hall is the worst food I've ever had and more expensive than eating out so I'm not too sure how that works. Super ghetto outside the base, so avoid that area. Other than that the base isn't too bad. read more

It's an absolute city within a city. They have pretty much everything you could need. Medical, postal, fast food groceries, hotels, housing....etc Everyone is polite! read more

WOW...I have to admit I am very impress with this base! Today was the first time I visited NAFB; I have driven by it, seen it from a distance but never really took the time to visit. Needless to say, NAFB isn't exactly a museum where you can drive up, park and pay a door fee and get in to tour the base. It's a little complicated then that...lol. The reason why I was able to get on base was due to work, and I've learned that for the next few weeks, NAFB will be busy due to Red Flag. I got a slight privilege to tour the base and look around because the individual we were suppose to meet at the commissary was running late. I only had one military base experience and to go from water to desert landscape, it is interesting. Unfortunately I didn't get to see all that I wanted, once I realize what an amazing facility we have here in N. Las Vegas, I was told if I ever just wanted to stop in and get a tour, I was more than welcome too! Based on my past experience with military base (which is very minimum), I realize it is such a privilege to be offer this opportunity. I know my job will have me working with the commissary often and I hope my job will allow me to branch out to host creative venues for NAFB! I for sure am very impress with what we have here in North Las Vegas and very proud of the men and women serving on all military level. And especially all my friends who are now serving Air Force, Navy and Army. Thank you for your sacrifice and service. Today definitely showed me a different view on our military...and it kinda helps when an event like Red Flag is happening, one truly gets to see what it's all about! Is there a better way to celebrate Veteran's Day than this? I was excited when my friend invited me to go, I haven't been to an air show since I was a kid, it was an annual event for us to go to Miramar and enjoy. This was a great way to pay respect to our military, past & present. They offered free shuttle service, and free entry. There were so many planes & jets around to check out, my favorite was the C-17 we were able to go in. They show cased lots of different flying styles but my favorite was the Thunderbirds. I was so obsessed with watching the flight crew & maintenance crew walk in uniform & do their pre flight checks, there is something so satisfying to my OCD to watch them all in sync and fly so perfectly (yes I really did say that out loud). I was so impressed with the only female pilot on the team, she was pretty amazing. I also got to enjoy fresh kettle corn! Stellar day! Happy Veteran's Day! read more

We went to watch the yearly Aviation Nation at Nellis AFB. WOW, what a great show. 1st of all, entry is FREE. You cannot beat FREE. Take your kids, they will love it. Watching old airplanes, new jets and helicopters flying around simulating air strikes and parachuters jumping from planes. You can also get in some of the planes on the ground. They gave away free american flags to wave around. Although it was super cold out there this year, the event itself was GREAT. My 5 year old thought for sure one of the planes was StarScream from Transformers and a helicopter was Blackout..lol He loved the show and so did the rest of my family. Also, transportation getting in and out was proficient. Although lines to get on a bus do get long when everyone leaves at the end, they at least have a constant stream of busses going back and forth. read more

Coming from macdill afb in Tampa florida this base is about half the size and not as nice. make sure to obey posted speed limits at all times and only use cell phones with a hands free divice. The military police at Nellis do not play! read more

Potentially great show marred by poor planning, no signage, lack of buses, lack of metal detectors and understaffing. As an Air Force veteran, I expected more from the current crop of flyboys. The flying was great and the static displays were great. I never found an actual schedule or a map of aircraft on display. The website was less than helpful. Parking was a real problem. There were no signs indicating this is the Blue lot or this is the Red lot, and many people took the wrong bus back. We spent more time parking, in line for the security check, waiting for buses than we did at the airshow. read more

As with nearly all large military bases, posts and installation Nellis AFB is a city within a city. Their Post Exchange, Commissary and other services are modern accessible with plenty of parking. The personnel and civilian employees are all very professional and friendly.A host of Family Readiness services are available and everyone is eager to be of help. Aviation nation 2014, as a whole was the same song and dance,. Korean war re-enactment, same fly byes,. But the big thing was the lack of aircraft on stactic display, years past had many more aircraft, and more display and vendors. the logicitics of the vendors, that were there poor, running out of forzen lemonade cups as an example, , the parking at LVMS was fine, but the bus running from the speedway to the base was a nightmare, poor planning there. For my grand kids which I took had a great time, All I say is I been to the airshow for the past 10 years, and have seen better from the folks at Nellis AFB or the group that puts on the air show for Nellis. They have had better displays with aircraft from the Navy, Marine Corps, and of course the Air Force, any owners of the war time aircraft, (Korea, WW2, Vietnam.) I can only hope next year they can put on a show that shows the pride of our militarys aircraft. read more

Having been stationed at Nellis AFB in the early 1980's, this review might be a bit biased. I was privy to see many aircraft and pilots there, from US and foreign air forces, during Red Flag, Gunsmoke and other operations there with other military units, like Green Flag and Silver Flag Alpha. I found the base to be well equipped for permanent party and visiting airmen, with a movie theater, NCO and Airman's clubs, ample BAQ and BOQ and a BX, Shoppette and Package store. Transportation on base then was lacking, but a shuttle bus around base would have been helpful. Transportation off base was via a private vehicle or city bus, and there was a rent a car facility on base. Since my departure from Nellis, the community has grown up around it, and Nellis is no longer out in the middle of BFE by itself. Air shows there are a treat for visitors, as the Home of the Thunderbirds hosts Aviation Nation. I have seen innumerable ones there, and across the country, by the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels. A note to visitors to the airshows, bring plenty to drink, sunscreen, shade and good shoes. It is HOT in the desert and not for the newbie. Heat exhaustion and Heat stroke will get you if you are unprepared. Nellis is the Home of the Fighter Pilot. Welcome! read more
