Hence we have always gone to Vet Schools wherever we lived, if available. Dr Nelson is a super well educated extremely thorough and meticulous verinarian. She was one of only a VERY few women admitted to Ohio State's Vet School years ago( as a florida out-of-State resident= even harder). I appreciate all the hard work she had to do, for I too was a gritty pioneer in the 70's in New York City's corporate community. She had to work 100 times harder than her male counterparts just to make it. These last 4 years she has given our cat and dog outstanding care and educated us in great detail about healthy diets/ reality of current fad diets. We feel extremely fortunate in having found her and trust her expertise 100 % with our truly beloved pets.

Dr Nelson and staff have treated all our pets and each has received caring and professional treatment. They've been great with routine requirements like exams and vaccinations as well as when critical emergency needs were essential. In critical care circumstances, they are mindful to keep us apprised of potential options, any concerns and associated financial issues, so no surprises, no nonsense. We are confident that our pets' health and welfare are their greatest concern and it's demonstrated by their long and happy lives.

There were NO cars in the parking lot in the middle of a weekday. Very strange and should have been my first clue something is off for an office with two vets available and no visible patients. Another clue should have been the "payment responsibility" disclosure they required me to sign before they would even look at my pet. In more than 60 years of pet ownership, I have never had to sign something like that before treatment. I brought my cat in because she had not eaten or had a bowel movement in seven days. After an exam and X-rays, I was told everything was fine and that she was probably pooping somewhere in the house. EXCUSE ME??? As if I hadn't already thought of that and looked everywhere myself. This is a cat who has NEVER done that in the 13 years I've had her. So, I left with no answers, no explanation for why my cat hadn't eaten in a week, no explanation for why she hadn't pooped in a week, and a $250 charge on my credit card. Apparently, at Island Animal Hospital, "everything is fine" is considered a diagnosis. And don't even get me started on the condition of the office. With the fees they charge, one would think they could afford to update the place. It looks like very little has changed since Dr. Moore was there nearly 30 years ago. When your pet hasn't eaten or had a bowel movement for seven days, you expect answers. Instead, I got a guess, a credit card charge, and was sent on my way. No wonder they are still taking new patients when every other vet in town is not. Do yourself a favor and look for another vet.

Although that's not that many reviews, we chose to give it a try because of the star average, the close proximity to our home and because out of the 10 different veterinary offices nearby, this was the only one what offered a pet plan. Upon arriving, the building looked kind of dated and it's easy to pass by, so be careful you don't miss it. When we walked in, all their merchandise and pet supplies looked well organized. There was even a white board that welcomed my miniature poodle, Rupert, for his first visit, which was very thoughtful of the staff. One of the ladies behind the counter asked how she could help us, but her disposition was very unwelcoming and unmannerly. We later found out from the doctor that her name was Brenda. As we were filling out the forms Brenda gave us, our dog was getting pretty nervous (which he does when he notices a shift in our regular routine or feels like he's in danger). He was whining and shaking a lot. Then I heard Brenda tell the other receptionist with annoyance, "Can you please get them into a room, so I can get my work done!" That was rude! If sounds that animals make bother you so much, you should not be working at a veterinarian office. One bad apple has the potential to sour the whole experience, so I have a few suggestions for this. Brenda should try smiling, adding some cheerfulness to her tone of voice, and being friendly with the animals and their owners. She has to 'act' like her job is enjoyable even if it isn't. Or she should work in the back, where there's no interaction with the customers. Once we were in a room, we let our dog down onto the floor, and I immediately noticed there was pee on the floor from a previous dog under the examination table. I also noticed the calendar still on December 2022, but that's besides the point. Autumn entered the room and greeted us with a smile. She was very jovial and bubbly! She started off with some friendly small talk, which made us feel like she was showing personal interest in us and our pup, and we even shared a few laughs. Then she asked some thorough questions about Rupert's health history. She really tried to help Rupert feel comfortable. She took him to the back for some blood work and returned with Dr. Kurtz. Dr. Kurtz was also very kind and sweet. She was gentle and patient with Rupert, which is important to us and she was very knowledgeable. She answered all of our questions and we definitely trust her with Rupert's care. As we were checking out, we paid for our visit with Stephanie. Stephanie was also very pleasant and had a friendly demeanor. She was concerned about how our visit went and she explained in detail what we would be charged for. We ended up signing up for the pet plan and had all of Rupert's semi annual tests done, along with some take home medication. Everything came up to about $405. Our only qualm was that at no time over the phone or in person were we told about a $99 plan startup fee for the Silver Plan. But that's fine. Overall, it was a good experience. And obviously we will be back since we live here now.

Veterinarian was scared of my dog, who is a big boy but very well behaved. I have never been to a veterinarian who was scared of a dog...He was there for an ear infection which he gets once a year. All other vets cured him with ear medication prescribes. This vet required he be sedated...then the ear treated. I agreed trusting her knowledge. MY MISTAKE! Do NOT trust this vet. Myself did everything.... Vet was scared of my dog so I gave him the medication to make him drowsy. Then I waited for TWO hours for him to get sleepy...he was not given the correct dosage!!! Don't waste your time, Money, OR risk your pets health under a joke of a veterinarian! They did NOTHING for my dog but risk his health and had him a nervous wreck for NO Reason at all as they did NOT do anything for my suffering dog. Was told they'd clean his ear then add medication to the ear that would last 1-2 weeks to help cure the infection and cut his nails while he was sleepy...When arrived to pick him up Vet was extremely short with me..I was charged for everything however his ear was not clean...no medication in the ear...and nails not cut!!!!???? Why she still has a license is crazy.......I highly highly recommend Ark Animal hospital.
