He knew I wanted the best result possible, and coordinated the entire process from piano moving (it needed to be moved to a special center for this major work to be done), to setting it up and multiple tunings and adjustments when I got it home. The piano now plays and sounds like a new piano! He and his assistant Chris are professional, enthusiastic, incredibly knowledgeable, and reasonable in their pricing. He gave me good advice about how to clean the brass pedals, and other things I wouldn't know. Then he spent nearly two hours tuning everything. We contacted Mr. Nelson because our piano was in critical condition after years of neglect and assaults by the grandchildren, who had detached 26 of the ivories from the keys and spilled sticky orange juice on the keyboard (but failed to report that fact to any adults). In other words, the poor piano was a mess. Mr. Nelson agreed that we had a huge problem, but he took it on. After several weeks in his gifted hands, the piano's working parts were reassembled at our house and we were stunned by the lovely sounds it produced. Steinway piano owners, beware!! If it were possible to give a half- or zero-star review, I would. Mr. Nelson replaced my Steinway B hammers with Japanese parts and did a terrible job regulating the action afterwards. It was a total disaster and a complete waste of money. I had to have the entire hammer work re-done by a Steinway factory-certified technician; the difference between now and then is huge. I consider myself lucky after the shoddy work that I didn't take Nelson's advice to have the entire set of strings replaced. So, please do your homework beforehand. Find out what sort of training/certification he has and if he belongs to the Piano Tech Guild. Call your local Steinway dealership or the Steinway factory in NY and ask them to recommend a piano technician in town. read more

Mr. Nelson rescued our 100 year old grand piano. In tuning it, he discovered that it needed extensive internal work--a "pin block" that would hold piano strings firmly in place, and new strings and hammers. He picked up the piano, had the work done, returned it, tuned it and always entertained us with his humor and extreme gentleness. Our 1918 O Model Steinway has now been delivered to our home. I needed my 1972 Baldwin Model R grand piano's action regulated and tuned after its move into my new home. I called and spoke to a few local San Diego piano technicians - Mr. Nelson at Nelson's Complete Piano Service was the only one I felt right about working on my piano. Upon arrival him and his assistant were dressed to the nines - Mr. Nelson with a cute fedora hat, shirt and tie, and his assistant Chris just as equally primmed. They removed the action, took it to their workshop, and returned with it completely regulated. They came back earlier than the estimated due date they quoted me and Mr. Nelson began working on the tuning.
