Oh my Albuquerqur! We do have a first class meat market,Nelson's meats. Called Nelson's to get our prime rib ordered for Christmas. My wife talked to Larry Nelson, owner. Wanted to know when would be the best time to order the rib. He told us the sooner the better. They do run out the closer it gets to Christmas. We saddled up and headed out. When we got there (about 11:00) there were a fair amount of customers already in the store. We took a number and as organized they are, it didn't take long at all to be called. Fortunately we got Larry. He must of spent 40 mins with us making sure we got the rib we needed. Everything from how large of one to the best rib numbers to get. Asked him what he felt the best seasoning to use. Told us what he uses in detail and then offered to have it seasoned for us at no extra cost. Awesome. We originally went to get the rib ordered but with the wonderful selection of meats, ended up with 10 lb's 85% lean hamburger ($2.98 lb), 10 lb's ham ($2.79 lb), which Larry cut the exact way we wanted and picked up a roast to slow cook. We had to back off or we would of gone crazy. Everyone there wa so awesome including the young man that carried our goodies to our car. I can't wait to try all the other cuts, especially this summer when we fire the BBQ and smoker up again. It about a 20 min drive for us, but so very well worth it! I don't even eat meat and I loved this place. I called ahead to ask if I can buy their excess bones for my dog to chew on. They said if you buy something else the bones are free, otherwise they're only $0.39 per pound! Make sure you call ahead for them because they said they run out every day. They also have amazing roasted green chile and red chile sauce that they make themselves and sell for super cheap. I also got a bag of wild caught seafood mix for $2.50 on special because of lent (thanks Christians!) 5/5 because they don't let anything go to waste, they're welcoming and friendly, and they roast their own green chile. read more

We love getting chile here, but today my family experienced extremely rude customer service from the meat store employees who are allowing people in and out of the store. We politely stood in line, waiting our turn. Once we got to the front, the man only allowed 1 out of my family of 3 in, even though we let them know we were making separate purchases. They stated the governors order only allows 1 member of each family in, which we know is false. They were also very rude in telling us this. They lost business today. read more

It was my first timvisit here. I must say the customer service is the best. I spoke with Ben, even though he was busy he right away stoped and answer all my questions. As a new ABQ resident I found my place to buy my meat. They have everything that I was looking for at great prices but more importantly with great customer service. This is an update to my previous review. After placing an order for 30lb of chicken neck I was told that I would be receiving a call few days later. I waited for a week and after calling them back to check on my order they forgot all about it. So Ben again took my order and I got and this time he assured me that he would place the order on Monday, they would receive it on Wed and will call me on following Friday to pick up. It's now Tuesday and I still have not heard back from Him. I guess I was wrong about the service here. I now go to Keller's or Sprouts to get my stuff. read more

This is a great place if your buying meat in bulk but if your getting single orders or ask the butchers or the people they hire for specific cuts or how to package a meat talk about attitude or sass, and then they expect a tip... it's called a job. We had heard the way this place oven roasts chile was worth the drive across town. So I called on Saturday to see if they were open on Labor day. The guy who answered said yes, but just for chile. I said great that's what we want. He said great we'll see you then. So labor day morning we drive 40 minutes across town step inside this dump where there is about 3 people waiting for chile (way below average for Albuquerque). We walk up to the register and the lady asks if we had an order. Um, the guy on the phone said nothing about placing an order. I explain what happened and she asked who I spoke to. All I can say is it was a man, to which she says "that explains it". Then she asked if I would like to place an order. I said great how long. She said tomorrow. Not going to happen. I have heard people talking about this place for years but never went because I thought meat was meat and it was out of my way. Further; every time I went into Kellers it was very pricey and always smells like rotting meat. Ewwwwww. I found myself wanting to get some bones for the dog and couldn't find them anywhere so I made the drive to Old Coors in the hopes of getting bones. My first impression is how clean this place is. Always smells of bleach. They had the bones and the meat I got was excellent. The staff is also very friendly. Yesterday sums up what shopping here is like. I went in the store and got my meat and bones after a short wait. When I walked out into the parking lot I got the smell of roasting green chile. I walked over to get a whiff and the guy setting by the roaster started talking to me. He goes into the store to get a tortilla so I could sample his chile. It was wonderful but what I was most impressed with is that this guy is the real deal, a honest business owner who treats his customers like gold. A good business man who sold me some chile but made me feel so good in the process. I now buy my meat, red and green chile as well as my pinto beans from Nelsons. There is always a few people in line when you come in which confirms the quality but the wait is never long. Truth be told I'm glad there is a line so this place will stay in business so I can keep coming. This place is great. You can get really specific with your requests and they'll do it for you - sometimes you'll even see them cutting your selection behind the counter. The meat is so fresh and so red, and if you buy anything you can get free bones for the pooch. I really cannot say enough good things about the people here too - very friendly, fast, kind! And you really cannot beat their prices either - extremely affordable, especially considering the visible freshness of the meat you're getting. Their meat is fantastic. They have economical meat packages for purchase or you can just purchase what you want. We love the hamburger patties that come in a box of 40 or 50 depending on the size of the patty. We bought a lot of meat from them when we were in the area and made a trip to stock up before we headed out. We are full timers and husband works on the road. Loved this place! read more

I swear I am never going to Nelsons again.Everytime I buy Hamburger Meat it spoils. I was there Friday and ordered 3lbs by 2pm on Saturday I went to go make meat loaf, and it was a dark color it smelled spoiled. This has happened the last 2 times before. Its because they mix older meat into the fresh. Have you seen when they give you meat from the tray its a different color in the middle of the meat. I worked at a meat market. And that's what they used to do. I always thought Nelsons was the best in town. I like fresh meat that wont spoil by the next day, or get that fowl smell. read more

The meat from Nelsons is Top Notch. I drive 80 miles from Socorro (my profile says Rio Rancho, but we moved to Socorro a while back) just to buy my meat from Nelsons. Their prices are unbelievably affordable even with the cost of gas for me to drive to Albuquerque I still pay less then I would anywhere else. I usually purchase their 100 Lb. Package (which they allow you to substitute) and not a single bad piece of meat. If I had to complain about anything at all is that when you order the 100 Lb package they wrap the hamburger in small packages, so with my family of 6 I usually have to open 2-3 packages. I grew up on a farm, I had Reserve Champion Steer twice in the 1980's at the State fair, so I know a thing or two about good meats and trust me this is Superb meat. This is the only place I buy meat from. The prices are great, customer service is great, and the meat is the best, always fresh. I buy red chili from there, it comes already blended and is always good, nice and bright red. I buy my green chili from there to, the way they roast is different, and all the chili is evenly roasted, never burnt pieces. I threw a birthday party for my husband and knew I'd need lots of meat for fajitas . . they sold me 25 lbs of beef fajita meat, and omg, that meat was as good as it gets . . I had to cut it down a little (their pieces were big), but after working 25 lbs of beef with very little if hardly any fat, I sure didn't mind because it showed me how exceptional their product was! My family has always gone there for Christmas meat (carne adovada), but now I'm really a fan and will be going there more often for more than just Christmas!
