Well I dont know where to start. My family had a wonderful fun time at the Grill. It was very relaxed family enviroment. I wouldnt have found if I didnt see on you tube. Came here yesterday as a promotion from the Husband and Wife Law Firm (they covered $15 per person). I got the mama burger combo (6 oz patty) with fries and a drink. Staff was friendly. They had a condiment bar and free homemade salsa and chips while I waited (took a little over 15 min for my order to come out). I added green chile and cheese to the burger, which was juicy. The fries were good, but I like my fries a little more crisp. The parking spots were a little tight and the place itself was a little hard to find at first (tucked away in the corner). Kinda more 3.75 stars . . . 3.9?. I've been coming here for years, and it's always a pleasant experience - and never one that calls me to rush back. Utterly clean - you'll never get sick here. GREAT service - super-nice people. Order at the counter, pay and tip (you'll want to tip; they're all just lovely people and they hustle around checking on folks constantly - never rushing you in any way at all) and then sit down - after you stop by the chips and salsa bar and go fill up your own drink - they'll call you to come get it when it's ready . . . then you go over to the condiment bar and put on your fixins. (Okay, this makes it sound like you _shouldn't_ tip (since you're doing essentially all of the server's work) . . . but, trust me, you should. You'll like how on top of things they all are. Plus, when you tip, they ring a bell and everyone working shouts a "Thank-you!," which is nice and kinda sweet. FWIW: I put a ten on $31-something today, and I'm glad I did.) Anyhow, the whole deal about this place is that it's a kitschy, "regular folks" place with a simple menu that's reasonably priced - and it has a mesquite grill. The food is fresh and cooked to order and the condiments/chips & salsa bar is always clean, fresh and orderly. Big tables for big groups, little tables, booths . . . it's a big space and folks like it a lot (constant stream of diners and carry-outs). They have burgers (three - ? - sizes), hot dogs, chicken and ribeyes (don't bring your vegan nephew, eh?). A half-pound burger is $10. Add cheese or green chile (you'd be crazy not to do so - they have solid green chile) and the price goes up. Add a drink and the price goes up. A combo (drink and fries added to the sandwich) adds $4. (An aside: don't waste your calories on the fries - I rarely waste any food at all, but left more than half my fries today.) The chips (large, fresh) and salsa (good, homemade and fresh) are included in the price (and some customers were going a little nuts on these). You get your own drinks so you control how much you drink. The burger itself - ay - it's fine. A lot of mesquite flavor, but kind of more of a rubbery chew on the meat than I want. The buns are fresh and the condiments and fixins are fresh and the chile is hot and the smoke on the meat is good . . . it's just that the burger itself never quite hits me in the "That's a mighty tasty burger!" I've had the ribeye (presently $30, including side) twice before, also; it's certainly a lot of ribeye for the money, but not one I am looking to repeat anytime soon. I've had the hot dog before - same story as with the burger (everything but the meat itself is pretty solid). I've not had the chicken. So . . . where are we at? Well, when friends want to meet me at The Grill on San Mateo, I always agree and I always have a nice time. I pretty much never suggest the place, though. I'm going to call it a 4-star ("Good") here on Yelp although nuance would indicate my real-world estimation of the place is just slightly under that. read more

This is a cozy little spot with great food at great prices. I think they might have a live band almost daily, which is lovely and fun. Menu doesn't have a lot of variety: you get burgers, and chicken items, and also a ribeye. The ribeye cooked on the grill has a great smoky taste to it. I do think they sometimes oversalt it, but it's still quite yummy here. I love adding mushrooms on top. I tried their Western burger, which is basically the patty with onion rings on top. Onion rings were meh, I might just save the extra $2 and go for a papa burger instead next time. It was cooked to juicy perfection though. For $4 more, you get a drink and fries. A great place to have a fantastic meal for around $17. They have a little bar with all the condiments (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard). We've heard so much about The Grill, hubs and I decided to stop in and check it out. The menu is simple and straightforward with many ways to customize your burger, and the prices are great. We enjoyed live music that took us back in time to before we were born (the classics our parents loved), which could also be said of the decor. Hubby was having a lot of memories from the local history all over the walls. Definitely a nostalgia place, not modern, which was fun and unexpected. Quick counter service with a DIY condiment bar. Food came out fast. The burgers were good--not too greasy, full of that old school chargrilled flavor--but not mind blowing. This isn't a place with experimental flavor combinations or fancy sauces. It's simple and classic, the kind of place you'd bring the older folks and they won't have anything to complain about, but maybe not somewhere you'd bring a date or anyone you're looking to impress. I ordered a burger and my husband a steak w/veggies. The flavor was good. Food was fresh to order. The bathroom was clean! Service was great everyone as very nice. I think the price was expensive (60.00) the condiments are in the middle of the restaurant and so you have to wash your hands after using them because they are sticky. It was packed it looks smaller from the outside but it's way bigger inside. The price maybe expensive since at Texas road house we would have paid 40.00 for both and large sides. I absolutely love everything about this place! When you walk in they have an old fashion theme. Sometimes they have live music playing. Their food and service are amazing!! There's 3 different sizes of burgers I usually get the 4 ounce so I can eat other stuff they have. They have self serve chips and salsa. The salsa is super delicious! I had my first visit here on January 22, 2025. There is adequate parking and good outdoor signage. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Casual decor with interesting extensive decorations of nostalgic memorabilia on the walls. I had the veggie burger with fries. Was able to load it up with mustard and pickles and I just loved it. They also had nice chips and salsa as part of the meal and the salsa had just a little touch of heat to make it very interesting. I went to The Grill when they were on Menaul and really enjoyed the food, staff, and atmosphere. They moved to San Mateo and brought the attitude, food and the kitschy atmosphere. Unfortunately it's loud and that is a big downside. It's hard to have that nice reasonable noise level from a small intimate place in a large cavernous space. The food: first and one of my favorite things is the complementary chips and salsa. The chips are never stale and the salsa, omg, yum!! The salsa does have cilantro and some people (looking at you dear SO) don't like cilantro but in moderation it just brings that salsa to another level for me. It is the best salsa I've had from any restaurant and jarred salsa can't compete. The ingredients look and taste fresh. Did I say I really like it? The burgers: they are cooked well over real flames. You top them yourself with the veggies and condiments found on a kiosk. I really like this too as I like extra veggies and sometimes restaurant staff don't know how to handle this request (crazy, right?). Anyway the veggies always look fresh, crispy lettuce on my burger? Yes, please! Sides: the fries are good but I love the fried mushrooms! Be careful though they keep their heat and they will scald your mouth. They are juicy and have a good mushroom taste. Sometimes I just crave their mushrooms! The zucchini on the other hand. Well, the zucchini sticks have gotten thinner so you might as well be eating empty fried batter because the zucchini just disappears. Stick with the mushrooms. Most of the onion rings have a nice amount of onion instead of just "onion skins" (take note, Blake's). I like them but oh, those mushrooms. Additional items: hot dogs, chicken and steak. They also usually have a beautiful cake but I'm usually filled with mushrooms so no room for cake, LOL!! Ps: the side of mushrooms is enough for 2 or 3 people. And no, I don't eat them all myself! A drop ceiling would be nice to dampen the noise but the decor is fun to look at and the food is good so it's on our return list. read more

I went to try this burger place with a group. Apparently, this place has been around for years, moved a few time but now in this location and sad that I just tried it now! Good menu, choices and price. Not to mention they have free chips and salsa bar with sandwich fixings. Service was quick, and staff was friendly, and attentive to the big group I was with. The menu isn't extensive (burgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, tenders, and a magnificent -looking steak) but it doesn't have to be with food this good. You order at the counter (this is when you ask for cheese, green chile, grilled onions, etc.) then find a table and enjoy the eclectic decor while you wait. Complimentary chips and delicious salsa are available and both were tasty. Pick your toppings from the fresh bar - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, etc. - and you're ready to dig in. It was pretty good and hit the spot of my green chili cheeseburger craving. I gotta come back for their ribeye special though... Anyway! I enjoyed their condiment bar as well as their complimentary chips and salsa. The workers as well as the customers were very friendly. My husband and I went in and had a steak and a burger. The ribeye steak was delicious, especially for the price. However, I'm not sure what the vegetable side was. It was frozen vegetables, cooked, and salt and boiled into oblivion. There was some sort of green beans on there. That was so bad. I couldn't even eat them. Just a simple steamed vegetable on the side would've been better. The boiled vegetables even looked bad. It was counter service, which is nice. They had a self-serve condiment bar for the burgers. The young people taking our orders at the counter were very energetic and friendly. They had somebody playing music, which was nice as well. Friendly greeting right upon entering and making our way to the front to place our orders. First time in, and we saw our burger options, and we both went for the Papa! In retrospect I should have done the Mama, but...I'm not super mad about it! Huge hunk of beef on a soft toasty bun. The fixins wagon had super fresh lettuce, maters, white and red onions, and delish dill pickles...everything I love on a burger, and all beautiful! This place really takes clean to a new level too!
