This is one of the cutest places I have ever been in my life and a MUST visit if you are traveling on Route 66. We didn't eat here but went in to grab some snacks. They have a whole separate room for souvenir items and I stocked the fuck up. I literally spent I think almost $200 on souvies here. They have some good shit. First off, this is not a fancy diner. It is just a tiny old grocery store that makes generous and inexpensive sandwiches for a great price and you can add chips and drinks (water or soda). Two of us ate there for less than $12 last week. You order your sandwich(es) at the deli counter at the back of the store. The sandwich is made fresh on your choice of bread with lots of meat, cheese, condiment and add ons (lettuce, pickles, tomato). Please know the bread is sliced sandwich bread (not fancy bakery items). You pay at the register when you pick up your sandwich along with whatever else you picked up in the little store. The real significance of this place is that it is an old grocery located in Riverton, Ks on historic Route 66. One room in the store is Route 66 merchandise. This is not a McDonalds, Wendys, etc. standard eating out experience. This is a funky, one of a kind and interesting small place to eat (there is a few tables and chairs in a covered area just outside the small store). It also serves as a snack stop or perhaps a convenience store for folks in Riverton who don't want to go to Joplin or other towns nearby. This place is really cute. Definitely from a bygone era. It's very small and tight inside. If there's a crowd, I'd probably pass. There's literally not even room to go in when someone is at the register. But it is charming and they do make nice sandwiches that are quite reasonable if you need a quick meal. Some cute Route 66 items too and unique sodas and some old fashioned candies also. read more

Scott and his staff are so friendly and easy to talk to, take the opportunity to talk to them about the history. Happy Independence Day! In honor of America's birthday, I'd like to take us back to a classic store here in America's Main Road... and what better store to visit for your Route 66 souvenirs than the oldest operating shop that still exists on the road today? Driving through Kansas, we hustled and made it a priority to stop by this little shop in Riverton. Right as you drive in you will see old relics from the historic route as well as signs advertising essentials to driving travelers. A young shop keeper was present to ring us up, and we assume it was someone that was part of the family. The store contains two sections: one half immediately selling basic goods such as snacks, refreshments, cigs, etc., while a second half houses primarily Route 66 souvenirs from magnets to signage. Walking in felt like stepping into the American past. We spent a majority of our time in the Route 66 room and were pleasantly surprised at the number of items that drew our attention. My friend and I managed to purchase some great magnets, maps, and road signs from this little store. We were very pleased with everything purchased and really enjoyed the experience shopping at this store. This shop is a must for anybody on Route 66. You're going to really enjoy the blast to the past and souvenirs you'll get just from this one spot. read more

We where respectful and quiet walked around the shop and looked at all the old Route 66 stuff and the guy was extremely rude to me and my friends. when he hung up the phone, we said good mornin and tried to be polite but I don't think he wanted anyone there for anything. Stumbled upon what looked like a cool little historic store. Me and my friends wanted to try the sandwiches, because of all the good reviews. When we walked in the man working was busy taking a personal call, did not greet us. We were walking around checking everything out quietly, when he finished his phone call he made a very rude remark about "none of us conversing with him". Was excited to read some of the cool information about Galena here and try the food but his service made us leave. Sadly we won't be returning. read more

This is one place you have to see for yourself because it is unique. They have great deli sandwiches made to order. There are Route 66 keepsakes to see and buy. The store itself is stocked with groceries, beverages, grilling needs, plants and more. Hundreds of people stop at the historical Nelson's Old Riverton Store while touring Route 66. To see a group of motorcycles parked on the lot is refreshing to me. I can't come close to describing all the store means to me because many, many years ago my dad worked there when it was a gas station. I just think what Scott has done with this business is wonderful. read more

According to my Route 66 travel book, this is a recommended spot to eat, so I planned for lunch here. I nearly missed it heading east on 66, so keep an eye out. This small spot is a bit of a convenience store, with a gift shop in another room (don't forget to sign the guest book while in there), and the deli counter in the back. I had a pastrami on rye, along with a slice of cherry pie and some chips. There are tables out on the covered patio, so there is a place to sit even if it raining. The prices are good, and the meal was quite filling. And the opportunity to chat with other customers made it even more fun - another table of Hoosiers traveling 66, and locals from Joplin who coincidentally had Indiana connections! Good meal and good conversation can't be beat. read more

Sadly but not sorry, I won't be returning. My friends and I came across this neat little store on our journey home. I had read about this place and decided to pull in and check it out. Upon arrival, this was a little piece of history when walking in. The store was a little dirty...but overall neat and jam packed with antiques. Said Good Morning to the guy working and when I was looking around the man very rudely spoke to me... When I was nothing but polite. So very disappointed we weren't able to try the sandwiches. Very nice small vintage market, deli and souvenir shop on Old Route 66. Excellent prices on sandwiches. -Has shaded/covered seating area to eat. Also sells flowering plants. One of the nicest memories of my trip is buying a sandwhich from this place and eating in on their shady patio. -It was a very nice place to cool down from the summer sun, and to think about how many people had crossed that Route 66 path right in front of me. -Also, the owner is knowlegable on Route 66 history. read more

Been going here since I was 10. The deli sandwiches are wonderful. It is like walking back into time. Decor brings back my childhood days. I loved going into the little shop of Route 66 also. They have Mothers days plants outside with wonderful flowering plants. The small grocery store is essential for a country town like Riverton! Getting a soda from the old cooler, smells and nostalgic decor rushes back those days of yesteryear. I ordered so many different types of deli sandwiches from the years of going here, each were exceptional!!! From the meat right in front of you, cut right there! You add a endless array of fresh toppings and condiments! Sitting out on the front patio, eating, during spring or summer, adds to the real feeling of a true country store! Talk about walking back in time! It bills itself as the longest continually running business on Route 66, having opened in 1925. The well kept store still has the atmosphere of the early years (tin tile ceilings, glass case for food display and it smells like Grandma's kitchen!). They also have a good selection of Route 66 merchandise in a little side room. If you're tripping down Route 66 don't skip this little jewel. Bonus Tip: The gentleman who runs this store is the President of the Kansas Route 66. Double Bonus Tip: Eat one of their sandwiches....yummy! This is an amazing place for a sandwich in small town America. It is right on the famous Route 66! It was previously called Eisler Brothers and each summer travelers from around the world visit this small shop. It may not be much but it's a family affair and loved by locals! I often order meat and cheese by the pound for family events. On any given day you may see multiple generations working together to prepare sandwich orders.
