I am a huge fan of momos and always looking for a chance to dine out. Friends love this place and we decided to go during the holidays and do a family style dinner. We ordered fried and steam momos to start, a combo of vegetable ones and chicken ones. Nepali bread (I forget the name, but was like fluffy pancakes), Butter Chicken, Bainghan Barta, Goat Curry, Saag Paneer and Nepali Chow Mein as suggested by the owner for the main dishes. The momos and chow mein were awesome. The other dishes were not as good as I've had elsewhere (including when I make at home). The goat was very tough and chewy, which was unfortunate, as goat can be tender and amazing. I would recommend coming for true nepali dishes only. Yes, Indian food is found in Nepal, but focus on the Nepali dishes and you can't go wrong. Also, it's a BYOB/W, so feel free to bring wine or beer (there's a store down the street if you forget. read more

I recently relocated to Vermont and have been in search of a "go to" takeout place - and Nepali Kitchen definitely takes the cake. Not only is the food delicious with large servings, but the folks at the restaurant are extremely nice (that alone makes me want to keep going back!). I usually opt for saag paneer, paratha, and steamed veggie momos. The saag paneer is creamy with lots of rice, the paratha buttery and flavorful, and the momos (I think they come with 8 or 10? it's a lot!) have a nice, spicy sauce to accompany. This amount of food usually lasts me at least 3 meals, and tastes just as delicious over the next day or so as I indulge. I haven't been able to eat in yet (COVID :)) but the takeout is usually ready within 30-40 minutes. They do get busy, so just call ahead with plenty of time - and when you're in there waiting, they'll make sure to update you and get your food ready as soon as they can. read more

I was torn to write this review as it's a family run in a very small town / Burlington burbs. There aren't too many ethnic restos like these around here. It was my first Nepalese food so who knows maybe it's all like this. Even so, it was really not a good experience. The young gal presumably a daughter (late teens)? didn't know the menu and was really helpless. Mother? the cook came out to explain and retake the order. All that's tolerable / learning curve. But the food was really not as ordered, barely luke warm, mild but over spiced and lacking flavor. We had chicken dumplings, chicken masala and chicken vindaloo (substituted from lamb). Seemed like a combination Chinese and Indian both which I've had plenty. Bottomline, regardless of type of restaurant, food should not be this poor. How it has 4****s mind boggling. My tummy hated me for the rest of the night and I ate 2 slices of plain bread to calm it. read more

I placed an order with DoorDash to have Napoli kitchen delivered. There was a mistake with my order. I called Napoli kitchen & they understood what the problem was and were very sorry. They weren't able to give me a refund (because of DoorDash) so they made me a new meal and drove it over & dropped it off at my house because I wasn't able to come get it. I was beyond excited to try the food here after reading the mostly rave reviews! Took a little road trip over to try and I must say I was a bit disappointed. The food was decent but not any more so than the other Indian restaurants I've tried in BTV. The servers were very friendly but the service was slow, even though they weren't overly busy. I did however appreciate the complimentary papadums and being brought water without having to ask. And the presentation of the food was beautiful, I will say. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala (medium spice) pictured below. Maybe I would've liked it more had I ordered hot, not sure. But you do get a big portion for a great price (which included rice!) The ambiance is nonexistent but that's okay if the food makes up for it. In this case, I don't feel like it did unfortunately. I might be willing to eat here again but I'd probably choose the restaurants in downtown Burlington first. read more

I was exploring Essex Junction and I stumbled upon this place as I was walking about. I've always wanted to try Nepalese food, especially momos (a.k.a. Nepalese dumplings), so I decided on a whim to check this place out. I wasn't very hungry so I ordered their samosas and some steamed chicken momos. The samosas were very flavorful and not too salty. The outside were fried to a nice golden brown but was a little bit on the greasy side. I was not a fan of the sauce that it came with because it was too sweet for me, but they still were very tasty on their own. The momos, on the other hand, were really tasty and steamed to perfection. The filling was moist and well seasoned. The momo skin was fresh and delightfully chewy. And the sauce that they were served with was so good I could have easily drank it on its own. I am really conflicted I like the food, but I don't think I can ever go there again. My Dal soup came in a paper container in a bag. The bag fell and then the top fell off and when I picked up the bag to check it broke and the soup fell between the passenger seat and console. They did replace the soup but not the hours of clean up. They recommended putting the new soup in the cup holder where it nearly got caught and I was just barely able to get out without spilling. Would recommend if you ever get takeout soup bring a sealable bowl and put the soup in immediately. I really really really wanted to like this restaurant, but it was the most disappointing meal I've had in a long time. The service was terrible - long wait for water, and for the check, and for the food. It was a Saturday night and they were packed, with lots of take out business, and honestly this wouldn't have been a problem if the food was worth it. We started with steamed chicken momos, which were the best thing about the meal. Definitely flavorful, and cooked through. This gave us hope for the rest of the meal. Hopes that were to be cruelly dashed... We ordered chicken tikki masala and chicken korma. Not the most adventurous choices, but if these can't be done properly, why bother with anything else? The tikki masala tasted like it was floating in a pool of butter and heavy cream. My tongue felt coated with a layer of butter fat after eating it. No flavor at all, and it was only a slightly orange color. The korma was better, barely. It at least had some flavor, and the chicken was super tender, but again, that buttery base was overwhelming. Their version of naan was good, but the first thing I did when I finished eating was pop a menthol cough drop to dissapate the thick coating on my tongue. Maybe it's gone downhill since the five star reviews, or maybe those reviews were written by people who have never eaten Indian food before, but this was definitely the worst Indian food I've had, and I've had quite a bit. read more

I first came here with my coworkers for a bite to eat a day or two after they opened. Ever since then I've been going back for more. I'm in love with chicken tikka and the veggie pakora. Chicken is tandoori style and cut in cubes. I used to get it every time, when I lived in Vermont. Since I've moved out of state I haven't found any place that gives me a homey feeling. We came here quite a bit before the pandemic. Food was always good. They changed ownership and they were to close for a while for a revamp and by that time COVID-19 entered the picture. This is the second time we have been back since they reopened just a couple of weeks ago. The first time was ok/good. Their cc/debit card reader was on the fritz. They took a check! The Chicken Tiki Marsala was excellent, my Veggie Chow Mein was OK. We ordered an appetizer and got something different than what we ordered. It was good though. They were very busy and just a couple of days after opening. We went back today and it was all on point. We ordered the same dishes. Same deliciousness we were accustomed to. Chicken Dumplings (Momo) is pretty good, juicy and hot. Probably best momos we've had in the past few months. We also got the Non-Vagetarian Thali. Both meats were great, though the lamb was a bit chewy. Couldn't figure out what was in the little container... Some sort of sauce? The kheer came with it was a bit weird, tasted more like sweetener instead real sugar ---- we aren't dietitians so we can't tell for sure. read more

I love the idea of this place -- there's such a glaring absence of south Asian food in Vermont, and this place has solid food for reasonable prices. The thali is especially lovely, and you can't go wrong with momos. In the rest of the country this place wouldn't be competitive, but up here it earns a solid four stars. The reason that I rated them only three stars, though, is because of customer service. I went in recently having ordered off the menu on their website. My bill, however, was more expensive than I had expected, based on the pricing listed online. When I explained this, they said that they changed the menu months ago but haven't figured out how to change the online menu. It would have been simple for them to offer me the price -- they admit is -- listed online, but they instead got defensive and I left. Big, big fan of Indian and Nepalese cuisine, so I was overjoyed to learn of a new restaurant in Essex Junction catering to this crowd. Momos? Count me in! For the purpose of this review, I want to note that we ordered takeout. I'd read a lot of reviews about slow service, but with takeout, we did not experience any of that. In fact, our large order was ready right on time. We showed up a little early and had a chance to watch the staff in action. I LOVED that each time the host brought a platter of food to one of the tables, he immediately came back and washed his hands. The kitchen staff kept wiping down surfaces and washing hands repeatedly too. That's really nice to see, as I don't see it happen as often as it should. We had a group of people so our order included: Onion bhajis Paneer pakora Fried chicken momo Vegetable chow mein Chicken shahi korma Butter chicken Lamb curry Every dish was excellent. The onion bhajis are not easily found, though I love them. They were great. I also really enjoyed the chow mein that was a nice break from the spicy curries. We're not afraid of spice, so all curries were ordered to be medium in heat. The spiciness, especially in the lamb curry, ended up being hotter than we expected, so when we order again, we'll drop it to mild. I loved my experience at Sherpa Kitchen, but I have to admit that this was just as good and a lot more convenient for us, especially when you consider there's free parking. The only thing I do have as a complaint is relatively minor. The takeout menu found on their Facebook page has an incorrect phone number. First time here. In Essex Junction. Lots of parking. Basic interior. They are closed on Monday. Buffet on weekend. Extensive menu. Their Samosas are good and instead of being accompanied with a chutney they come with a lentil potato mix that is quite spicy. I had the lamb vindaloo which comes with rice and a papadam. Very tasty. This place is amazing. I've been twice in the past week and can't wait to go back. Every curry I've tried has been beyond delicious. Their saag curries are very mild and soul-warming, the vegetable curry is light and tasty, but my personal favorite is the chicken mushroom curry. It comes medium but it's great extra spicy. The only thing I've had that I wouldn't order again are the fish and paneer pakora appetizers. Next time I will try the momos or stick with the samosas which were great. The first time we were there we had the owner as our waiter and he did a great job. The second time we had a kid who seems pretty new to restaurant work. I still can't give them anything less than 5 stars with curries that good and I think the service will straighten itself out as they get a little more experience under their belts. Actually was going to the deli around the corner, but I peered through the window and liked what I saw, a large Indian family (number of people) with many plates on the table. It was buffet style. I know some people have reviewed that the service was slow, and I guess it can be, but it is just a family run restaurant. I can't say I've had to wait an exceedingly long time for food. I happen to love the Tikka Masala, Veggie Pakora and the momos are out of the world. I think its a little funny that some people have said they've gotten flavorless food, because I have gotten just the opposite. Maybe they were having an off night that day? Had my first meal here last night and my socks were blown off. So flavorful and exceptionally well cooked. Everything I tasted was way beyond my expectations. We had a number of excellent appetizers ( Momos were ) and I tasted along with my curried shrimp a vegetarian korma which was creamy and so wonderful. My dish had plenty of shrimp and the sauce it in came was a sumptuous rich curry flavor - warm but not overwhelmingly hot/spicy. Others had lamb or goat. The biryanis were really good as well. Last year when this place opened, I used to get takeout all the time. The food was great and close to my work, so I could just swing by on my way home. Recently went back tonight and the food was pretty tasteless. I got the chicken tikki masala and the saag paneer, the chicken tasted like straight up butter. Order arrived very quickly - 20 minutes before they said to expect it. But I wish they would have taken that time and made better food. Fried things were soggy, almost burned, and not great. EVERYTHING was VERY bland, no distinct flavors. No heat either, at all, but there was absolutely no depth of flavor, no nuance, no flavors playing off each other. What a rollercoaster my relationship with this restaurant has been! Unfortunately, the original owners sold the business within the last year and while the food isn't bad per se, it has lost its former magic during the transfer of ownership. The food is still solidly decent but the subtlety of flavor isn't there anymore and I don't find myself ordering often because it's pretty 1 note.
