Everything I tried was delicious, made to order, and well portioned. The staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations. We tried a few appetizers; samosas, pakora, papadam, all great offerings. Entrees were equally as good and there are so many options it was hard to decide what to choose. Buffet is one of the worst I've ever had. Nan not included. Food was lukewarm or even cold. Tandoori chicken had a nice spice to it but almost all the other dishes tasted too salty. No one ever came over to even check on us after they delivered the drinks. The onion appetizer was actually empty for some time and not refilled. I don't understand why a knife was not included with the set of eating utensils. The chicken was chopped up multiple times and there were a lot of bone chips in the Tandoori chicken. Perhaps a dull chop knife? Surprisingly there was a steady rate of business. Unfortunately I would not go back based on this experience. They can certainly earn five stars from me but it's gonna take a lot of work from the front of the house. The food was 5 stars.... the service was less than 1 star. The menu is very good. It clearly explains what each item is, and there is a wide variety of choices for everyone.... even choices for those that are coerced into going to an Indian/Nepalese restaurant because everyone else in their party loves that sort of food. The cooking is exceptional and traditional. Portions where perfect. Prices were good. Everyone loved their choices - we had 4 items on the menu (samosas,a lamb, chicken and vegetarian entrees)... All hot, delicious and out of the kitchen quickly! Whoever is cooking is doing a 5 star job!!! This is where things went off the rails. The waitstaff needs a big lesson in attentive service, etiquette and speed. Errors like holding three drinking glasses with your fingers IN them when you bring them to the table after 10 minutes, does not make me want to then pour my soda into it and drink out of it. Having a prompt visit by a host or waiter that can seat you, welcome you to the restaurant and answer any questions would be a great start. Not letting 20 minutes go by in between table visits would be another good thing to work on and not having a customer have to get up and ask for the bill because another 15 minutes had passed. It is obviously a family run restaurant and they all seem like very wonderful, hardworking people, but I hope that the service comments in many of the reviews don't keep people from being "one and done". Maybe an experienced host would be a good addition? The food is outstanding and worth the trip but I hope the service problems don't overshadow their obvious skill and effort in the kitchen. We WILL give it another try to see if the owners read these reviews and make some needed changes. They will be VERY successful if the service rises to the level of their food!! read more

Delicious new addition to the local food scene. We went on a Saturday night with 3 kids and 4 adults and managed to get a seat though it was pretty packed. Service was good and patient with a lot of questions (and kids), and the food was really outstanding. The appetizers were good -- the paneer and fish pakoras were both tasty, not too much batter. Also had veggie momos which were nice and delicate and the sauce was very good. But the star dishes for me were the curries -- I had the chicken shahi korma which I don't think I've seen locally and it was so tasty, while my wife had a very nice saag paneer and others at our table had chicken saag and chicken tikka, also all very good. Also the chai tea was delicious and came in nice little cups with a Chinese-style teapot. All in all a great meal read more

I'm not sure what to exactly recommend because my fiancé and I have tried almost everything as we visited this place multiple times since we moved to Vermont. More good places to eat in Essex Junction? Sign me up. I've eaten here a few times, now, and the food has been consistently good each time. Their curries have just the right amount of spice. Take-out has never taken more than fifteen minutes for me for lunch and dinner. The buffet is solid, though if I had one complaint, it's that the food is kept only mildly warm. I just recently moved to Essex after many years living in downtown Burlington. While I was excited to have more house for my money, I was really worried about not having the same diversity in food choices when dining out. However, Essex seems to be going through a food renaissance as of late, and I was thrilled to see a Nepalese/Indian option open up right when I came to town. I was a bit worried at first, because after I ordered, it took about 15 minutes to get my papadum. Then another 15 to get my water. And another 15 to get my napkin and utensils. By the time the food arrived (nearly an hour after I ordered) I was almost hoping the food would be lousy so I could write the place off. That did not happen. The lamb saag (one of my all-time favorite dishes, which the Indian restaurants in Burlington just can't seem to get right) was perfection--the spinach fresh, just the perfect amount of heat, with a rich, sweet blend of ginger and cilantro. The lamb was incredibly tender and flavorful. I would have liked a couple more pieces, but it was certainly no less a portion than other local spots. The basmati rice (cooked perfectly, with lots of aromatics and every grain separate) was a great compliment to the saag. I overheard later that this was their debut weekend, so that helped to excuse the long delay. To be fair, no one seemed to be taking a laissez-fair approach--kitchen staff was rushing to help waitstaff and vice-versa. Like any restaurant just starting out, there are things to work on. But if they can get the timeliness of food delivery on par with the quality of the food, my review will be changing to five stars soon. read more

After the closing of the Himalayan restaurant in Burlington, I was pleased to hear that this place had opened to fill the void. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the servers, while not exactly fast, were very friendly and attentive. The menu offers a variety of dishes from India, Bhutan and Nepal, all of which are very rich and flavorful. My wife ordered the chicken tikka masala which she said was some of the best she has had, while I enjoyed the Baingan Bhartha, which is an eggplant-based dish served with rice. The serving sizes are more than generous which is amazing considering the very reasonable prices of the entrees. Be warned though,that since the dishes are so rich, a little bit definitely goes a long way. With that in mind, make certain you don't over order. The only small critiques are that the appetizers are not served with enough of a variety of dipping sauces and the paratha bread, while good, was definitely not freshly baked. I so wanted to love this restaurant. Got there for lunch, we were seated after standing in the hallway for 15 minutes. Restaurant was at about 60% seating capacity with only one waiter trying to serve every single table! So we waited a about 15 minutes for the waiter to take our order for appetizer, main course, and dessert. Then about 30 minutes for our food and appetizers to arrive piece meal. I ordered my chicken tikka masala spiced hot. It arrived bland and not spicy at all. I must admit after I dumped a bunch of salt into it the flavor was acceptable. We never got our bread and had to chase the waiter around the restaurant twice, like Sherlock Holmes, to help us solve the mystery of the missing bread. He said he had no clue why it wouldn't come out and that he was getting so overwhelmed because he couldn't handle how many tables we occupied. Customers were wanting water refills, looking to be seated, etc...was a complete mess and to top it off people were leaving and dirty tables started spreading through the restaurant. This one lady emerged from the back in a cook outfit, she looked around and walked straight out of the restaurant to go have a cigarette. Once we were about done with our mains, he brought our bread over and said "sorry it arrived so late I'll take it off your bill". We then waited about 20 more minutes for our check. He comes over and drops the check on our table and says..."do you still want your dessert?". I just handed him my credit card and said please ring out what we got so we can get out of here. I was totally willing to cut the service some slack, because it is so obviously a family-run joint; but I ran out of slack. To make the criticisms as short as possible, and move on to the food: very long wait to get some water, when the server gave water to the table right next to us, but then went to bus another table instead of looking after us; entrees and appetizers coming all at the same time - actually, entrees slightly earlier, leaving us confused; meat instead of vegetarian chow mein; the cook had to come out and identify things for the server when we expressed confusion as to what was being placed in front of us (not expecting entrees before apps). Yet, when we asked for things, we got them, always with a smile. So, the food: it was a mixed bag. Chicken momos were good. The momo choices are chicken or vegetarian, steamed or fried. It would be nice if they offered a plate with both chicken and vegetarian. Vegetable platter was the typical array of Indian restaurant fried appetizers. Chow mein - the extremely dry meat detracted from it, as did the level of spice. We were asked our spice preference, and we said medium for both of us; I found my chow mein just this side of too hot, while my husband's lamb korma wasn't spicy at all. No beer or wine, but you can BYOB; wish we had checked that ahead of time. I have to call this place average. I have had worse tasting Himalayan food in the Burlington area, but also better, and definitely a much better service experience. read more
