Had to go to this place because I heard that the views were amazing. It was much more than that. The food was fresh and great tasting. One thing about this place that I didn't like was the parking. Luckily we got a parking fast because the ground keepers gave us their spot. Service was quick and very friendly. The star of the show though is the views. Very beautiful views over looking the ocean. A must go spot.

Come here for the view! This cliffside restaurant with seating overlooking the Pacific is a wonderful stop along Highway 1. We popped in for a late lunch (3:00 pm) on a weekday afternoon and the place was busy, but we were seated right away. Service was slow and the food took a long time to come out. We ordered the steak ($45) and the special (a pulled pork sandwich). At $30, I've had better elsewhere. I give the food 3 stars. They also have a cafe serving breakfast and a well stocked gift shop with high quality items that was fun to browse.

Great views. Gets really busy! We got there 10 minutes before opening on a weekday and it was booked already but fortunately there were lots of seats and we got an outside table. Food was decent. You're here for the views! We just got some salad and salmon opener. A little pricey but satisfying and quick to prepare. Parking can be a hassle as the complex has a cafe and gift shop as well. You can also park on the street if necessary.

Big Sur is the perfect getaway, and driving Highway 1 is a true California jewel! Hungry from the drive, we stopped at Nepenthe. The parking lot is small, challenge on weekends. Luckily, we only waited a short time before being seated outside. The view was simply fantastic (we even had a friendly bird land right on our table). While the staff were decent and the food was average, the breathtaking view completely steals the show. Tip: visit on a weekday to beat the parking hassle, and keep in mind that no animals are allowed inside or outside. Also No RV parking in the lot. The space is too tight for large vehicles, which causes traffic issue. Just saying....

Nepenthe served as a worthy goal for our "coasting" trip deep into Big Sur to welcome the beginning of Summer. Coffee in Pacific Grove, Bixby Bridge, McWay Falls, and lunch at Nepenthe at a table overlooking the coast. The burgers are still competent and overpriced, parking is limited at meal times, and to complain about either is like going to Disneyland and downgrading the experience because the seating on the Matterhorn was cramped. Correct but you missed the point. Enjoy the view, the historic building, and slowly nurse every bite of that $28 cheeseburger in paradise as you soak it all in. (Sorry JimmyB!) Service was cheerful, fast, and friendly. The deck sunny and swarmed by others having an equally excellent day.

We've been coming here for fifteen years. We regularly visit at least once a month for lunch. The two-hour drive is always worth it, with scenic views of Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean as our reward. We come for the spectacular view from the back railings. Over the years, staff turnover has been high, but a few have stayed for several years. They're not known for their hospitality; food and wine are overpriced for the quality, but if you expect that and look past it, the view makes up for it. Today, we feel compelled to share our thoughts on a particular server, Adrian, who often waits at the railing tables. He was our waiter again, which is disappointing because we've received better service from others. Watching him serve both our table and others, he was cocky, arrogant, and rude--his usual attitude. Unfortunately, this was his worst performance recently, which spoiled our experience. We had hoped he would recognize and appreciate returning clients over time. One may wonder, but despite his lack of professionalism and prejudice, we have always given him generous gratuity, hoping he will realize and practice better. We can forgive the food and the heavily overpriced bottle of wine, but we'd prefer an untrained busser to take our order and tend to us over him any day. The view: 5 stars The food: 3 stars Adrian (the server): 1 star

Everyone recommends to come to this spot. The view is exceptional. It's busy! We went on a Wednesday mid day, we still waited about 30-45 mins for a table. Unable to make reservations. The staff were friendly and welcome and the food was delicious. Small menu but the options are good.

Can you believe that's only half an order of fries?

This restaurant has been on my bucket list for a Big Sur visit for years and it was definitely worth the wait for us!! We arrived right before 3pm yesterday after a morning of hiking in the area. We were starved and ready to have a drink too. Parking was a struggle, but I got off the car to get our name on the wait list while my husband found parking down the road. It's truly a magical place and quite big. There are three levels, gift shop, cafe and the restaurant on top. I was able to get my name on the list and was told it was a 45 min to an hour wait, so I walked around until my hubby joined me upstairs. Once he did, we headed to the bar to order a couple drinks. We ordered the Monterey beer on tap and I ordered mine as a Michelada (bloody beer), which was delicious with their homemade mix! We headed to find a seat in the back overlooking the ocean while we wait. The views are spectacular of course! We only ended up waiting for like 30 mins or so when our table was ready. We were seated in the back where we were, which in my opinion has the best views in the restaurant! I ordered their turkey sandwich special and I was torn between the coleslaw or kidney bean/garbanzo salad as my side. The waitress said she can do a half and half which was so nice of them! My hubby ordered the French dip sandwich with coleslaw and a half order of fries (which was alot). Now any order of fries are a separate charge, but they are good fries! Everything we ordered was pretty good. We had another round of beers, took pictures and enjoyed the views. The food is overpriced, BUT keep in mind you are paying for the views and the wonderful ambiance!! The service for us was also amazing and totally worth a visit at least once.

Stopped here for a lunch break and it was the right spot. Be prepared for hard to find parking space and also an hour or longer wait for a table. A fantastic view of the ocean while you're enjoying your meal. We had the Ambrosia burger which was so so. It came with a side and we picked salad for a side. Fries and cheese on your hamburger are additional costs. If you're looking for great food, this is not the place but if you're looking for a view while dining, this is it. YOLO, so go try it.

We were in Big Sur for vacation recently and were recommended Nepenthe by our hotel concierge as a great spot to check out for dinner. The restaurant doesn't take dinner reservations but you can go to the Phoenix shop on site (before 6 pm when they close) while you're waiting on your table to be prepared. We waited maybe about 20 minutes for our table and were seated on the outdoor patio overlooking the ocean with beautiful sunset views. We even saw a whale or two in the distance it was super cool! The server came by a few minutes after we were seated and brought menus and offered to answer any questions we had. They have beer, wine, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options. We loved their extensive wine list including a number of Pinot's that were local from the area. Wine started around $50 for a full bottle. We ordered the pork chop special of the night which came with fresh veggies and homemade mashed potatoes, and all entrees come with a small side salad. We also ordered the banana cream pie (special of the day) and all desserts are made daily in house. All food was fresh and very tasty and service was outstanding!

This place is BEAUTIFUL. If u can park, u can join the very large waiting list and linger around the restaurant enjoying the cliffside views! They do have big concrete steps you and can sit on and sip a nice drink while you wait, as well as a large bench around the back. The bartender that served me was the kindest person. I felt bad kinda being in the way a little bit just trying to get a drink because it was so busy. let's just say the pull here is really the location. Food was ok but very pricy. I liked the bean!

    Do they take Reservations?

    No reservation

No dogs? Even on the patio?

No unfortunately they don't allow dogs even on the patio. There is a huge sign outside that says that dogs aren't allowed.

Do they still have a gift shop?

    Yes, a very nice one.

Is it possible to make reservations?

They don't take reservations which is the single biggest reason I would skip this place and its 2+ hour waits for tables altogether. If they don't respect your time as a customer you should take your business elsewhere.

    Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are not allowed. They are quite strict with this rule. If your dog is a "service dog" you can bring it but if it's not and trying to pass it off as a service animal you may have to leave Fido in your car. That can be dangerous with heat and… Read more

Is this place open? What's the current COVID restrictions?

We were there on December 7, and it was open, outdoor seating only. Staff is wearing masks. I would call to check.

Can you stop in just for a drink and to enjoy the views, or is there only a restaurant area?

There is a patio area one level down from the restaurant and close to the gift shop where you can enjoy beer , wine and the great view.

    Do they allow dog?

They absolutely DO NOT allow dogs, not even on their outside patio. You can bring your dog to the gift shop and maybe the coffee terrace but the restaurant doesn't allow them

We are wanting to stop here on our way to our campsite. We are traveling in a 22' RV. Is there parking large enough for an RV?

The parking lot is tight when busy, and the driveway is narrow and steep, as was previously mentioned. You would do better to park alongside the highway or on the turnout.

Getting mixed answers about reservations, do they take them or is it walk in only for lunch or dinner?

For lunch it's first come first served.

Phenomenal dining experience…read more Eating here is an integral experience of staying at Alila. They serve a brunch menu (for breakfast and lunch) as well as dinner. All food and non-alcoholic drinks are included with your stay (with a 1 entree limit for dinner). Over the course of our stay here, we tried the majority of the menu. Most of the food was top notch with the highlights being: *Moroccan Shakshuka - Comes out pipping hot in a mini cast iron pan. The spicy kick is infused within the eggs and peppers. Pairs perfectly with the toasted pita *Porchetta Sandwich - The pork was so rich and juicy and the crusty roll soaked up all the juices *Smoked San Marzano Bisque - The tomato flavor is very concentrated and infused with a pleasant smoke. A touch of creme makes it perfect. *Salt Spring Mussels - The fresh mussels were very tender and paired well with their spicy, smokey sausage. *La Bistecca - Medium-rare filet with roasted onions and chimichurri. Can't go wrong here. Areas for improvement: Their pizza crust is a tad thick and too floury for my taste. Their squid ink pasta is also too thick and chewy. A note about service: On the first night, I ordered their signature Marine Layer drink which has a bubble with Lavender smoke in it. Their machine malfunctioned, resulting in no smoke. I spoke to the manager about it and he personally rectified the issue for the second night and provided two complimentary drinks. This is an example of stellar service. Kudos to the staff for their commitment to a quality experience. Ambiance: The view is simply unbeatable. Ask for a table on the far edge near the water. You get a landscape view of the ocean and the adjacent hills. At sunset, the view is bathed in orange. PSA: The dinner reservations for the good times fill up rather quickly. Ask the concierge to book for you as soon as your book the hotel!

Service was quite slow, took a least an hour to get our entree and the food tasted like fairly average restaurant. None of the dishes really stood out or felt particularly memorable. One thing we did appreciate was that the restaurant is very dog-friendly and even offers a menu for dogs, which was a nice touch. The outdoor seating area was also beautiful, especially during sunset, making for a great dining atmosphere. Breakfast was definitely the better meal. There was a wide variety of options to choose from, including fresh-pressed juices, and everything we tried was flavorful and enjoyable. The quality and selection were noticeably better than dinner. Overall, the meals were okay, but I expected a lot more given that this restaurant is part of a Hyatt Category 8 property. The setting and breakfast were highlights, but the dinner experience didn't quite live up to expectations.

I knew that going in. It was still starker than I expected. Start with the property. When that is the view off your deck, why go anywhere else? Stunning doesn't cover it. We hiked much of the grounds and every turn delivered something new. The kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying. Then the restaurant. Everything was perfect -- service, quality, execution. Much of the food sourced on property or from the surrounding community. My wife declared the salad the best she'd ever had. High praise for a salad. High praise, full stop. Special shout out to our server Yasmany and bartender Thomas -- both exceptional. What struck me most was how effortless the entire staff made it look. These are people who deal with guests from around the world, all arriving with high expectations of a high-end experience. And yet nothing felt forced. Nobody appeared to be trying to impress us. It was just perfect service, perfectly delivered. That's the rarest thing in hospitality. Highlight of the trip. Hands down. And I suspect, never to be repeated.

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION -- IT MAY SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS…read more If you are considering booking an ocean-view room at Post Ranch Inn between May, June, July, or August, I strongly encourage you to do extensive research about Big Sur's seasonal coastal fog before spending your money. Based on our experience, I would never book an ocean-view room during these months again. We paid nearly $10,000 for two nights in one of the resort's premium ocean-view accommodations because the breathtaking ocean views shown throughout their website were the main reason we chose this property. Unfortunately, during our entire stay, the ocean view was completely hidden by dense fog. We never saw the spectacular view that was advertised and pictured online. What disappointed us most was the lack of transparency. The website showcases beautiful, clear ocean views but does not adequately prepare guests for the possibility that the view may be completely obstructed for an entire stay during certain times of the year. If guests are paying thousands of dollars specifically for an ocean-view room, they deserve clear information about the seasonal risk of persistent coastal fog so they can make an informed decision. Throughout our stay, we repeatedly asked staff whether the fog would clear. We were consistently told that it would likely clear within a few hours. Unfortunately, that never happened. The fog remained throughout our stay, and we never got to enjoy the ocean view we paid a premium for. What made this even more frustrating was that, after repeatedly being told by multiple staff members that the fog would clear soon, one employee later told us that they were not supposed to tell guests that the weather was expected to remain the same for several days and that these foggy conditions are common during this time of year. According to that employee, this type of weather often persists throughout much of the summer season. I cannot independently verify that statement, but if that information was accurate, it raises serious concerns about transparency. Guests spending thousands of dollars for an ocean-view room deserve honest information about the likelihood of actually seeing the ocean during their stay. The room itself also had maintenance issues. The bar sink was clogged, and the shower valve/faucet was loose and repeatedly fell while being used. We reported both problems, but neither was repaired during our stay. Staff apologized, but no one came to address the issues. For a property charging close to $5,000 per night, I expected much better communication, transparency, maintenance, and overall value. I fully understand that the weather is beyond the hotel's control. However, what is within their control is how honestly they communicate the risk of seasonal fog to potential guests. Had we known there was a realistic possibility of spending our entire stay looking at a wall of fog instead of the Pacific Ocean, we would have chosen different travel dates, a different room category, or a different destination altogether. The property itself is beautiful, but based on our experience, the value did not come close to justifying the cost. If an ocean view is important to you, think very carefully before booking an ocean-view room during the late spring and summer months.

This trip I took a longtime friend with me and although it's been two days since we were there, she's still saying how impressed she was. She was absolutely floored that they use real butter and the portions were huge. In fact the portions were so big that I couldn't even finish half of my food! And I was HUNGRY! LOL Maura and her brother (which I apologize I can't remember his name) both helped us. Maura sat us and we spoke for a quick minute, and her amazing brother served us. I can't believe it don't recall his name! But everyone there is AWESOME! I was tempted to get the super fresh salad, but decided instead on the clam chowder (as did Alicia), and the salmon was perfectly cooked. The veggies were so fresh and flavorful and the rice was exceptionally fluffy and seasoned perfectly. Not to mention the garlic toast was next level. I can't wait to get back over there! Their blueberry pancakes are calling my name! Trust me, if you want a good old fashioned stick to your bones diner, this place right here checks all the boxes! Plus it's pet friendly, if you choose to sit on the patio!

They have a small parking area. They have a small menu and they only serve breakfast until 11:20 and then at 11:30 it is lunch. We got in right before breakfast ended and got the roadhouse breakfast. There is seating inside and seating outside. It is very pretty. They have lodging at the same location as well. It was clean and quaint. The food was good, a little on the small side for the price but it was all good. The staff was very nice but very firm on the end and start times of breakfast and lunch. They are only open until 2:30pm.

Beautiful scenery , must sit outside and enjoy the views, we sat on the little deck facing the grassy area and loved it. Grassy area was perfect for our after lunch frisbee session!! I had the crab cake sandwich and my wife got a burger, we really enjoyed both. Service was good, manager was very friendly!! We were on a long 10 day camp trip from San Rafael- Santa Barbra so stopping in for lunch was a lovely treat and we will definitely stop in next time we are in the area. We didn't do it but loved seeing folks sitting in the river in the adirondack chairs , doesn't get much more relaxing than enjoying your favorite beverage while you lounge with your feet dangling in the Big Sur river!!

We were a group of 12 and service was pretty good. Got the chicken sandwich chicken sandwich which was meh 5/10, and the sandwich was cold when it came out. Also got fajitas which were ok. I was gonna give up on desserts but someone in our group recommended it so we ordered some (glad I did because they were so good). Got the chocolate mousse cake, creme brûlée and apple pie which were all really good!! The dessert made up for all the food.
