One was at my rental property, the second at my primary residence. When a new tenant moved into the rental property we found many things that weren't done correctly, some that cost me a large amount of money. Thank goodness there was a new project manager, who corrected many of the problems caused for the last project manager. There was a huge amount of leaking when my tenant took a bath. It caused water damage in both adjacent bathrooms. The master bath floor was to be taken down to the studs in the insurer payment. It wasn't. When the hall bathroom flooded, the workmen found asbestos that has been covered by layers of tile. My question was if the adjacent bathroom floor had been removed to the studs, wouldn't asbestos have been found there too? The Project Manager admitted Yes. Asbestos was then found. The company covered the asbestos removal in that one bathroom but not the other. If they had done the work correctly the first time they would have known both bathroom floors were the same. Then the source of the tub leak had to be found. The plumbing under the house wasn't going to the city's connection. More big bucks for me. The new project manager did correct some issues that the now no longer employed Project Manager didn't correct. He couldn't believe that he actually took the new toilet I ha recently replaced & replaced it with a cheap one. I saw it & said "Where is my toilet?" The next day what I thought was my toilet has been returned,. But when I tried it the lid wasn't solid like the one I had recently bought. My theory was that he was running his own business on the side & skimming from First Atlantic & its customers When I had a pipe break at my primary residence I panicked & called First Atlantic. To my chagrin they assigned that same Project Manager. On hindsight I should have requested someone else. I later learned that he was sub contracting work to companies not used by First Atlantic. They had to remove the tile from my master bathroom floor to mitigate the water damage. It was obviously not done correctly. A few years ago I had my front door removed. The stud it was connected to, which was directly under the worst of the water leak, was so rotten that it crumbled into pieces. The tile company didn't shield the bathroom correctly while they ground away the inches of hard insulating material under the tile. My vanity, closet & bedroom were coated with the residue. I had to throw many things away. When the cleaners he hired were asked about cleaning the area they indicated their instructions were to clean a path from the VA bathroom and down the front staircase . I later learned that First Atlantic has their own cleaning crew that would never have said that. I could go on and on. Suffice it to say that even with personnel changes, I would never hire this company again.

Lawton did a fantastic job walking me through the claim process, provided recommendations during demolition and rebuilding and expertly managed all of the trades (electrical, dry wall, plumbing, construction, painting, floor team, mitigation...). Lawton's thoroughness and attention to detail prevented any rework or mistakes. Our renovation was not simple - we removed the sub floor, removed a wall, all new flooring downstairs, extensive electrical work and got pre-existing issues up to code, rerouted plumbing, new counters, cabinets, ripped out a sliding glass, put in French door, side lights, a coffee bar and bourbon bar, all new appliances. Not to mention all the scheduling of City inspectors.

I am a 35 year old transgender woman navigating the damage and repairs after we had after a water pipe burst upstairs in our family home during early February. Up until today, the folks sent by Servpro have been solid, but this morning I was contacted by one of their subcontractors (Gregory Starling, from "Just One More LLC") who called and brought up their vote and politics for Donald Trump, unsolicited. He explicitly said he supports Trump, "for his business," which was shocking and disheartening: every one in my house is under attack by the Trump administration. From hospice care, to Medicaid funding, to my healthcare and legal rights to housing and employment. It's not a casual or welcome conversation to bring up Trump while we should be discussing material selections. I told Greg I did not think we could move forward with him because my family does not support politically fascist business; my grandfather fought in WW2 against the Nazi's and would turn in his grave. Then I got a call from the Project Manager, Justin. Justin explained Servpro's policies about not bringing up race, religion, politics, gender, etc. and we agreed that business (let alone delicate repair work in ones home) is not the place to discuss politics. He also told me there was no one else who could step in without adjusting the timeline, so I told him I wouldn't be 100% comfortable but that I can suck it up and work with Greg so long as he doesn't bring up politics again; the medical transport was already on the road coming to relocate my sick father during planned demolition tomorrow. My family is desperate and its been months of delays and I did not realize Greg would be the only option. So, I reconsidered and was willing to move forward after Justin reassured me there was a whole diverse team at Servpro... and it didn't seem right to blame the whole team for Greg's unsolicited political views. Then I got a phone call from the Servpro of Virginia Beach General Manager, Mr. Jason Cheracles. Mr. Cheracles was upset, if not offended himself, telling me at one point I am "what's wrong with this country" and informing me they would be "canceling the contract" and issuing a refund. I implored him to reconsider or reschedule, I even offered an apology for any offense and explanation that none of this would have happened if Greg didn't bring up politics and make it explicitly about his business. I understand that Greg's politics reflect on him, and if he so chooses, his business. That's his right, it is America after all. But I was shocked to see Servpro take the side of a subcontractor that violated their own policies against bringing up politics to homeowners. I was blamed and punished for Greg's violation of policy and trust, even after I was willing to set aside differences. Greg and Jason were the ones unwilling to reconcile difference or move forward. As shameful as it is: I begged. Jason told me there was no way to reschedule or work with anyone else either; that Servpro had other subcontractors but that he knew none of them would want to work with me. If you have an emergency, do not hesitate to call Servpro as they are a vital service. They employ A LOT of people, many great folks. Justin, for example. But when it comes to repair work and their subcontractors: beware. If they bring up their politics to homeowners and the homeowner bulks... this Servpro will not apologize, try to find a solution, or work with you... they will blame the homeowner and leave them with a broken house and the yellow pages. Even if the homeowner is disabled on their deathbed. I probably shouldn't have taken issue only to be willing to work it out afterwards, but I shouldn't have had to deal with politics *at all* and I am desperate to get our home put back together. Mr. Cheracles and Greg do not care about that desperate need. So, we will find another contractor.

ServPro was recommended by our insurance company but after I reached out to this specific location I was told they weren't even listed in my insurance's list of company profiles and they had wanted us to use a different ServPro. With that being said let's get into the the nitty gritty of why I am giving them a 1 - Star review: 1) ServPro set an appointment time and date and the evening before I received a voicemail stating they would have to reschedule it because they were understaffed; so to clarify they selected the date and time not the customer and yet they still had to change it. 2) I was told I would receive a call 20-30 minutes prior to their arrival. I did not receive that call, in fact the technicians showed up in front of my and then sat in their work truck for 10-15 minutes eating their breakfast and talking to each other, keep in mind I had my front door open and they could clearly see I was standing there waiting to greet/receive them, still didn't get them moving. One of the technicians was very professional, I assume he was the lead, the other looked less than thrilled to be working. 3) Techs did not wear or offer to wear any sort of mask/face covering while in my home, nor did they even attempt to social distance from me, as I was filling out paperwork one technician was literally hovering over me. 4)Techs did not wear any sort of shoe/boot covering or put down any sort of floor protector. They repeatedly walked inside and outside and the ground was wet so they tracked in wetness which I could overlook until they sprayed my subfloor with some sort of antimicrobial agent and I personally witnessed them walk through it and then walk all over the carpet right beside our baby's nursery. No big deal I'm sure it's "super safe" for a baby to possibly ingest. 5) They did not perform a very thorough vacuum of their work area upon completion of the job. Part of their job was breaking up and removing tile; well by not vacuuming well there were numerous sharp shards left on the floor for my family to step on and the baby to crawl on. 6) One of the craziest negative things that occurred was the technicians did not plug the open/exposed toilet flange and they had fans and dehumidifiers running in my home which created a vacuum and as you can guess pulled a lot of sewer gas into my home, again I'm sure that's great for a baby or humans to be breathing in, in general. They did however leave a couple disposable nitrile gloves in there for me. Called Project Manager (PM) to verify if this was standard practice and was told it was not but he did not seem overly concerned, he did however offer to send a crew out to plug the hole, I just opted to perform this "arduous" task myself. 7) Initial interactions with the assigned PM was decent enough but when calling him on his business associated phone number he would answer it with a "yeah". He did this to me and my wife; we had to be the ones to verify that we were in fact talking to the correct person and even then it was a painful phone call. What professional answers their business line "yeah"? 8) I was told by the Techs that the PM would follow up with me the evening they finished to discuss the next steps and the fact they believed the leaking water had spread under our tub. PM never called me as I was told he would and when asked about what his technicians said about the water under the tub he told my wife they don't typically remove tubs and he has no way to get under the tub to check the moisture....wait but that's why you were in my home to begin with!! 9) I was told by the technicians I would be provided hard copies of all documents I signed....still have no copies. 10) I was given a Customer Satisfaction Survey to complete...and by complete I mean right then with the technicians standing over me. How about a link to a third party company site to perform the survey instead of being pressured into it. 11) lastly, I was sent a DocuSign document that I attest to the fact this company dried my home correctly...well how do I know they dried it correctly, A) that's what they do for a living not me and B) if they did NOT remove the tub how can anyone be sure it's dry under it and along the three walls the tubs is enclosed by?

He was not pushy, he was down to earth and presented the facts, answered all my questions and didn't ask why I wasn't willing to sign the moment his sales pitch was over but rather thanked me for my time and let me discuss my options with my spouse. Furthermore when it came time to deliver he did, he helped initiate the insurance claim and got the process started. Mitigation team was prompt courteous and very easy to work with. If you get a team led or with Rob on it he does great work! While a little heavy handed in the value of their work, the knowledge of the processes and osha requirements makes it near impossible for insurance to argue. When it came to reconstruction it felt like it took awhile to get started and then asking to be put on the schedule resulted in being accused of self importance. I understand scheduling delays can cause intimidation as to actually giving a client an estimated time frame, however to say you have no idea is not a good business practice. What saved them is they are incredibly talented at getting the customer top dollar with insurance because again they write with a heavy hand. Thankfully Jacob understood I was not willing to go over what insurance was giving us and worked with me to get as many jobs we could not do ourselves was covered in the actual estimate. A brief timeline for your awareness: From the start of rip out to the day insurance received the invoice was 10 days. Insurance then took 9 days for us to all get on the same page for mitigation. It took insurance another 13 days to agree on reconstruction costs. Reconstruction for ERS took 10 days to finish the estimate and materials list, I paid the deposit and signed the contract during that time- actual work started 9 days later. Despite the slow start they did get me on the schedule fairly quick. About the reconstruction teams: Masters of their craft are the carpenters Mike and Rick. They are so unbelievably talented in all they do; they understand wood and how to make the cuts look seamless and took great pride in their work. They will never be caught lounging around on the clock and are very courteous. Whenever you need a touch up or the project needs to be finished Shawn sends them because they are that good. They fix drywall, plumbing, you name it. I would hire them again personally due to the quality of their service. Steven and John the tile subcontractors are also extremely knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make sure I was getting the best product possible. They took care to not break tiles and if something was wrong they would rip it all out to fix it without me saying a word. Their understanding of high fail points in showers and how to ensure the shower and tubs were not going to fail made us as homeowners feel much more at ease. The drywall subcontractor left a lot to be desired. The team is so kind and did a phenomenal job hanging the drywall and skim coating over a terrible texture, but they did not clean up after themselves very well - leaving dust in electrical sockets, mud on electrical outlets and switches. They also did a lackluster job finishing the product - leaving a large imperfections on the walls bumps and grooves alike - and their primer job resembled that of someone painting with 75% water and 25% primer. Such a shame as they were a very nice team, and maybe had I been there to babysit it would have been a different end product. The project manager for mitigation was not my personal favorite as he did not comprehend how to handle a client who is having their house ripped apart and wants to put it back together. The project manager for reconstruction, Shawn and Ethan was a different story. Shawn was understanding and attentive. He came and checked in on the job every couple days if not daily. When there was a problem Shawn was on it, he wasted no time and was constantly making sure the project was moving in the right direction. Overall a good company.

Bottom line is go with someone else. I had to use this type of service again and had none of the…read morebelow issues with First Atlantic. They required me to sign a work order prior to giving an estimate. One of the items in the work order stated that I would be responsible for anything that insurance doesn't cover. According to our property manager (this property is a rental) who I brought this up with, he had this issue with them in the past but thought that they had fixed the problem. They did not. USAA Insurance did not cover 1100 dollars of what they wanted. They threatened collections on me to pay this amount on top of the approximately 3500 that USAA covered. Mind you that this threat, done via email with no official document, was the first time that they demanded that I pay this amount. On top of this they did not provide a detailed invoice until this moment even though I had asked for one. (They said they forgot to include me on the original). I paid knowing what I had signed, but told them I would start the process of making sure that all people know how they do business, and that I would never use them again. Funny enough I needed these services once more a couple months later which is when I went with First Atlantic and had the complete opposite experience. I called USAA to ask for their reasoning and they gave me a break down. 1. This company charges above market rates. The USAA adjuster had told me that they discussed this with the company, so they were well aware that they were charging above market rates. Insurance does not cover rates that go above market value. 2. They charged for supervisor hours. This is apparently unusual and not covered by insurance companies. 3. They sent some samples to a third party to be tested. Again the adjuster had talked to the company and told them to provided an invoice and after doing that they would cover this portion. An invoice of the third party testing was never provided. This company relies on the notion that they must get in right away to prevent further damage to your property, rushes you to sign the work order, knowingly charges rates that insurance will not pay for, and does not provide proper documentation to insurance to allow for a larger reimbursement. Edit: Attached is the statement from USAA. They also used a lab by the name of Commonwealth of Virginia Asbestos Analytical Laboratory #3333000153 per their documents.
