Recently visited their cedar park location and wanted to check my review for the OG to compare my thoughts and was shocked to find I hadn't already reviewed here! Probably my most frequented bagel spot in Austin. Very solid quality, love the mix of options they have. Very sad to see the sun-dried tomato bagel seems to be off the menu now, that was one of my favorites. Their spicy cream cheese is another favorite, has a great flavor and brings a surprising amount of heat. If you're a local I think they're well worth having in your bagel rotation, but I don't think the quality is so stand out to make it a stop on a short out of town trip. Always a long wait for this location. The Longhorn is my favorite on their menu. I wish their bagels were a bit bigger and fluffier but the flavors of all the bagel sandwiches I've tried are delicious! I recommend ordering ahead online if you plan on grab and go. It's usually quite busy so it's hard to find any seating inside. We usually just get our order to-go and eat in our car or somewhere else. read more

Some of the best bagels in Austin!! I've been going to Nervous Charlie's since I was in college, and their bagels are always so consistently delicious. I love their cream cheese and consistency of their bagels, and it really satisfies my craving whenever I do crave a good bagel. They package everything really nicely, and everything is made in house. Nervous Charlie's is some of the best bagels you'll find in North Austin. You order on a screen at the counter but the staff is usually standing by and happy to help you. They offer all classic bagels (sesame, everything, pumpernickel, plain, etc.) with several cream cheese options and bagel sandwiches too. Spring 2026 they have a seasonal dill pickle cream cheese is incredible! I wish it was a permanent option. Service was pretty quick. They brought the order to my table. The place has outdoor seating, although it's right on Lamar so you have to contend with street traffic. During the pandemic, you had to order well in advance, but now on weekdays, you can usually walk in and get your order quickly. Weekends might require a little planning for a larger order. They don't have a great coffee program. They offer light and dark roasts, no espresso drinks or decaf. But I still think they deliver a great, no-frills bagel shop. read more

Since I've come to Austin I was looking for a bagel place to fill the gap and Nervous Charlie's was the first place I went to, mostly because it was closest to my office. I liked the vibe of the place-kind of like a coffee shop and a busy burger place. I ended up ordering one of their lunch bagels, The Empire and while it was pretty tasty, I thought the sandwich was undersized, both the bagel and the fillings itself. I debated ordering another one and my co-workers (rightly) said I should if I'm not quite full. I'm a big fan of the Everything Bagel and the flavor itself was...low-like the seasoning was thrown on a little before baking. I ordered The Classic on a garlic bagel with bacon, scallion cream cheese, and avocado, and it was stacked. The bagel had real authentic and fresh garlic flavor, the cream cheese was THICK and the amount of cream cheese that I personally love was on the sandwich, the egg was cooked just right, and the avocado was fully ripe with no dark spots at all. So I went with a bootleg version with the Alexa and added on spinach and avocado along with my pistachio cream cheese. It was good but definitely wanted some alfalfa sprouts. Next time! Now, for the bagel...I ordered a toasted multigrain bagel with cream cheese, and it cost $3.50...super reasonably priced, which I appreciated. Nervous Charlie's serves New York-style bages. The bagel had multi-grains on the bottom and top...crisp on the outside and soft inside...perfect combo! They gave me a very generous helping of cream cheese. OMG...this cream cheese was so smooth and flavorful. I asked for jam, and they provided strawberry jam at no additional cost. That strawberry jam was so delightful...strong strawberry flavor without being eye-squinting sweet. This bagel was so enjoyable to eat. Also, there were about 9 individuals working in the kitchen. While Nervous Charlie's isn't bad, by any means, I think my expectations were so high that it became a letdown when I did finally try it. I love love love new York style bagels, so I came in thinking of a thick, warm, doughy bagel with a nice chew. And a discernable crust. And while the bagels here are definitely better than grocery store quality, it didn't hit the same. Also, this part is completely on me. I had no idea what a salt bagel was. And I pray that you look up what it is before you order it. I thought, sure salt bagel, it'll be like a pretzel that sounds delicious. But the bagel is like COATED in huge salt crystals and it's sooo salty. Like my tongue was lowkey burning and I had to scrape practically all of it off. So just beware of what you order with it. I think usually, if you order a salt bagel, you just get it with something fatty like lox or a lottt of cream cheese to cut it down. But yeah, I was shocked. Anyways the tree hugger is pretty good. The toppings all taste really fresh. And I like that you can choose what kind of cream cheese you want. I got the honey walnut, which was really good. But I don't think it was mixed in very well, because I definitely got some chunks of just plain cream cheese. The empire was okay. The dressing was a lot more mayo-y than I expected. But even with the dressing, the overall bagel still felt very dry and hard to chew through. The chicken inside just seemed like a dry frozen chicken patty. Finally, I made it to NC yesterday with my brother. So happy to report my every thing multigrain bagel with chives cream cheese and lox was everything I hoped it would be. My brother had the eggs and bacon on everything multigrain and he looked happy. Even their coffee was good. The folks behind the counter, a lovely young woman was, in the wonderful tradition that makes Austin a great place to live and ensures the quality of life is top tier, more than helpful and kind. My boyfriend and I came in a Saturday morning and ordered a Longhorn breakfast sandwich with a protein choice of sausage on a garlic bagel. We asked them to cut it in half since we were sharing it. My boyfriend also ordered a coffee, which they were okay with him filling his own Yeti mug that he brought with. There were quite a few tables and seating, but the majority of them were taken since this is such a popular breakfast spot. We shared a table with a mom and baby daughter, who told us that she lives in the neighborhood and stops by every weekend to pick something up. Our breakfast sandwich was ready within a few minutes. Funny story about this place, I would always drive past and thought it was a pet shop. It wasn't until recently when my partner and I went for a walk that we realized it was a quintessential bagel shop. Both of us being from the NorthEast was compelled to stop and eat. Boom! Finally a place that really gets it right! This is how a Jersey bagel should be done! I read they get the dough (w/ the water) flown in from NYC (jersey bagels are better but NYC can still be commendable). I opened the wrapped on my bacon egg and cheese and was like...okay, okay.. and then once I took one bite I knew. They did it right. I had that doughie davey's last week which was pretty good but doesn't quite get the jersey part right. Anyway, Charlie's is around 30% CHEAPER as well as tastes better. Put another way (to have fun with math), if you go to Nervous Chuck and then try doughie dave, you'll pay 50% more. Crazy. This is a good spot for a bagel. They are always friendly and efficient. Their bagels are great and the price is not insane, for a bagel. Don't get me started on their sandwich prices. My main gripe is the ungodly amount of cream cheese they put on their bagels. I'm a fat guy and I'm pleading for them to hold back on the mountain of cheese they apply. However, if they're set on providing enough cream cheese to satisfy a glutton, they could at least give me a price break when I order my bagel with light cream cheese.
