Went here for the first time with my cousin and her friend and we were very happy we did. The food was amazing. Our server, Abren, was a 1 man show but he was just as amazing as the food. We all had the house salad, split the mushrooms and bruschetta, with drinks and dessert (bread pudding and flourless chocolate cake). Our entrees were lamb chops, the grilled chickens and the ribeye. They were all delicious. The ribeye was melt in your mouth tender, the chicken was juicy and flavorful and the lamb had a balsamic and pomegranate reduction that was fantastic. I would recommend everything we ordered. This averaged about $60/person. The quality and quantity of the food was well worth the price. The restaurant is in a Victorian house. I used to drive by so the time before realizing it was a restaurant. Food was good. I really enjoyed the scallops and bread pudding. Really interesting place from the refurbished Victorian house decor that's situated in the heart of a part of Hayward that is rapidly gentrifying. The food was wonderful - we had the prawns with prosciutto, wild mushroom bruschetta as appetizers and a mix of steak and salmon for our entrees. For as good as the food was, we were surprised how easy it was to get reservations on a Friday night for a party of four. We plan to come back soon so we hope the restaurant keeps its doors open. The service was efficient, prosaically so, especially considering that there was only one server. WOW!!! I was super excited to try a new spot, and made a reservation on Open Table about 30 minutes before our reservation. I walked in there with my parents and the host/server was EXTREMELY rude from the start. He accused us of not having dinner reservations, and asked to see my phone, which I gladly showed him. He reluctantly sat us, but by the time we sat down, it was too late because he had a VERY bad/negative attitude towards us for whatever reason. We decided to leave. Why would someone treat a paying customer that way?! It's a shame because we love trying new places, and the menu looked great! Looks like we will never get to try it! Bummer. read more

Really loved the atmosphere. I felt like we went to Europe for the evening. Such tasty food and very relaxing in the back patio garden with a lovely fountain and grape vines complete with ripened grapes. So sweet. Very nice marinated olives with several different flavors and wonderful soup. Also, the spicy shrimp was heavenly. Loved the service and will definitely be back with an even bigger appetite. Charming place. My pork chop dinner was yummy. It was huge. A little bit too much rosemary though in the potato salad. They also could have done something more creative than just serve up steamed carrots on the side. The other minus was our waiter had a little weird personality. He wasn't that naturally friendly. This place was better than anything I could have imagined! The wine selection was great, the food was wonderful and the service was great! I never knew they were in Hayward, and found out they are going into their 10th year. I will be back!!! We had the house marinated warm olives and steamed clams in the garlic sauce. HIDDEN GEM!! Just moved to the neighborhood and was disappointed with the lack of decent dining until we came here. A very comfy, softly lit restaurant, perfect for a date night with your hunny. Now what to eat - Chop salad - this is not a traditional salad. It's minced! So you get a tasty bit of everything in each bite. My husband thought this was genius cuz it makes eating a salad a no brainer? I didn't realize eating salad was stressful for him, but hey, good for you for discovering this salad! Mushroom bruschetta - crispy grilled bread with a mountain of browned garlicky mushrooms piled on... simple and perfect. Clams - the sauce is a creamy spicy tomato sauce. Amazing. Make sure to ask for extra bread for dipping! Ribeye - Super yum! When the meats good, tastes good. Came with crispy smashed potatoes and tangy sautéed greens. Very satisfying. Neumanali is a really nice restaurant located on the ground floor of a restored Victorian home on the outskirts of downtown Hayward. It has a small parking lot behind and to the side of the restaurant which looks like it can accommodate everyone because Neumanali is a pretty small restaurant. The interior has been completely restored and opened up with large ceiling beams to support the upper two stories. We started with the steamed clams as an appetizer to share. This dish was fabulous. The cream sauce used wine and chorizo and was spectacular. Super tasty. Highly recommended. The scallops entrée was excellent as well. The pork chop was good and the crust was very tasty. The thick cut was a tiny bit dry and would have been better had the pork chop been pre-brined. Finished off the wonderful meal with their bread pudding with a healthy serving of crème. Our host was also our server and did a good job. He wasn't all that friendly, but once you engaged him in conversation, he really seemed to open up. What a find! I was looking for something in Hayward and based on other reviews I chose this spot. Nice, small restaurant with good ambiance. My friend and I had the warm goat cheese and pear salad, salmon, and a steak. The Ribeye was HUGE, as was the salmon, and both were excellent. The steak in particular was exceptional. Both came with good sides. I was pleasantly surprised at the large portions. Not a 5 star review because even though it's called a "wine bar" they only had 3 whites and 3 reds by the glass - i would have loved more of a selection, though the cabernet i had was nice. Also, as others have noticed, there's one guy who is the host and the only waiter, and while he is lovely and did a great job, it meant that sometimes the wait was a little longer than necessary (like, it took a minute to be greeted at the door, or to get our check, or for dessert to come out because he was attending to other tables). read more

We started with the chopped salad that was crisp and appetizing. The bread was just everyday so that was put aside. Then we proceeded with the Filet Mignon that was done to perfection and Rib Eye that just melted in your mouth. The meats were paired with potatoes and vegetables prepared so well to make a claim on their own. We finished the meal with the flourless chocolate cake that was delectable, rich, and just the right portion for two people to share. Although an argument could be made for a one serving option depending on the mood of the day, week, or month. ;) The restaurant itself was cozy since it is a converted home, making for an intimate dinner and atmosphere. And for the same reason, it seemed that there was only one server for the whole place. This made things just a tad bit slower. Hence the 4 stars as opposed to 5. We were very excited about trying a local restaurant in our hometown for the first time since we moved and decided to try Neumanali because they had great reviews and they are open until 10:00p.m. We walked in at 8:30p.m. and a man who did not introduce himself approached us and said they were closing because the chef had an emergency. Interesting how the sign was still on their front lawn when this "emergency happen" and he only remembered they were about to close when we walked in. This restaurant is so quaint and charming. There are a limited number of tables which makes for a very intimate dining experience. The service was friendly and the food was delicious! I had the salmon and my husband had the ribeye. He is super critical of how red meat is prepared and said it was the best ribeye he's had in the bay area. He was also quite pleased with the sauteed spinach that accompanied his steak. My salmon was cooked to perfection which I paired with a nice buttery chardonnay. The place is very inviting and you'll be tempted to stay long after you've finished your meal to just chat. This made for a nice evening out without having to break the bank for a wonderful meal. Tried this place out for Valentine's Day because my date and I didn't want to go too far. I was surprised to find a nice fine dining restaurant in Hayward located right next to Hayward Bart. The location is nice, a very old fashion home converted into a nice looking restaurant. Although the restaurant aesthetic is nice, I can't say that about the experience here. I'm not sure how this restaurant normally runs, but being that it was Valentine's Day I figured they would be prepared for a busy night, yet there was only one waiter who was also the host. He was managing all the tables all by himself, I give him props for that, but that means it took long for us to get service. What bothered us is that the place felt understaffed, and the bartender could have helped. Our waiter seemed to have been overwhelmed, but he stayed very composed. The food was decent, but I've definitely had better. We shared their bruschetta appetizer, the mushroom topping tasted very good, seasoned very well. The bread was very rough, it was like eating a giant crouton, I'm sure the other side of the restaurant can hear me biting into the bread. For the entree, my date got the salmon dish and I got the rack of lamb. Both dishes were cooked perfectly and tasted very good. We have no complaints with the main entree dishes. Overall we wanted to like this place more but found it hard to. We thought the restaurant setting had potential to be something that we would have given us a wonderful evening. But the service here felt very understaffed, that overshadowed the rest of our experience at Neumanali. I hope they will improve on that in the near future. read more

Wife and I walked into a half empty restaurant at 8pm for an impromptu anniversary dinner. A bit disheveled nursing our 6 week old newborn at home. Host turned us away saying we should call ahead and that the chef isn't available for us. Not sure if we were profiled bc we were dressed casually or didn't look like the other patrons. The curt and dismissive tone from the host left a really bad taste in my mouth that I couldn't shake all evening. Never returning, not cool. read more

I had dinner with friends here on 1.24.18. Neither of us live in Hayward. I must say that the food and service was amazing! The resturant is a 3 min walk fron BART. This was perfect because I was coming from San Francisco. Neumanali was worth the 30 min bart ride. I had the Goat cheese salad, Lamb Chops entrée and the flour-less chocolate cake. We also ordered a bottle of Rose from Chile for the table. Everything was fantastic! Including the decor. The restaurant is inside a classic Victorian House. Too cute read more

This gem is nestled right off the edge of down town Hayward. The server does it all--host, bartends, answers the phone, all alone! Set up on the ground floor of old Victorian 3-story, you'd drive right past if you weren't looking. The wine list was selective yet refined, my girlfriend and I enjoyed a glass at the bar. I have not posted low reviews before, but my experience at Neumanali compels me to post one.  I've attached photo of trout with cauliflower dish here - it was dry, flavorless, and partly burned. I had to pick around it because the black parts were bitter from being burned. I agree with the other Yelp reviewers who have stated here that the male waiter at this establishment is a grouch and non-hospitable.  He was not only unwelcoming and unfriendly from the very beginning to me and my guest, but at one point toward the end he came to my table and threw the dessert menu on the table without even uttering a single word. It boggled my mind especially when my guest and I only treated him with common decency and respect. Why would a waiter treat a paying customer this way is beyond me. Please be prepared if you bring any guests here because they will not be impressed by such treatment. Unfortunately the food was also sub-par as noted above. My dining experience here left a very bad taste in the mouth, both literally and figuratively.  This place was not worth the price given the sub-par food and poor service. There are many other places with better customer service and tastier food at better prices. This is an honest review - I hope Yelp will not make this post invisible because I am posting the truth from my dining experience here. read more

I couldn't get myself to give another star to this place. Neumanali, I really wanted to like you, I did. I was so excited to have dinner there since I'd found it on Yelp and they had great reviews except for complaints that the service was slow, and I thought to myself, slow? Couldnt be that bad... I was so wrong. 3 of my girlfriends and I planned a date and I made reservations here a month in advance. A week before the date, I started looking at the menu, trying to decide what I wanted to get.. it was so difficult to decide between all the entrees, they all sounded delicious! The day of the date came and I'd finally decided on ordering the lamb chops. Unfortunately, they were doing construction and had street closures on Hayward blvd so 2 of us got stuck in traffic. The other 2 of our friends got there on time, and ate bread and while waiting for us to arrive. We got there nearly 45 minutes late and right when we sat down, our server, who was also our host, goes, "so, you're finally here!" I started to complain about the construction situation and he put his hand up and said, "No, I don't wanna hear it." I didn't think much of it because I figured he was just joking. But after seeing his attitude during the rest of the dinner, I realize that he was being just plain RUDE. Disappointment #1: They were out of lamb chops, which was not announced by the server when we were given our menus, but I found out from my friend who overheard the table next to her trying to order it. Disappointment #2: Decided to go with the prime rib. Flagged the server down and indicated we wanted to order. He nodded but proceeded to get the water pitcher and walk around, filling up other customers glasses instead of taking our order. I had a slight inkling that he was upset that we were late, but there's no way to tell for sure. Disappointment #3: The chef isn't happy with the way the prime rib is turning out, so the server offered to give me the filet mignon at the same sized portion with the same fixings at no additional cost. I decided to take him up on the offer. The spicy shrimp appetizer comes and it's really good. The portion was a decent size and the 4 of us all enjoyed sharing it. Disappointment #4: 1hr 10 minutes after the app - the food finally arrives and I'm given a filet mignon that was NOT prime rib portion, but with the same fixings. By then, I'm so exhausted from the drive and from waiting for the food that I felt like it wasn't worth it to ask for another steak. Taste-wise, my entrée wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either and the beef lacked seasoning. We looked around for a manager or anyone else working there to complain about the prime rib situation, but it looked like our server was the only one working. After seeing his snappy attitude, the last thing I wanted to do was to deal with him. Disappointment #5: The bill comes and I'd been charged the filet price for the filet portion. Frustrated and tired, I just decided to pay for it, leaving a not-so-generous tip and promising myself I'd never be back. I know, I should've complained, but I didn't want to ruin our dinner date and trust me, things could get heated REAL fast when I complain. One thing is for sure, Neumanali has lost 4 returning customers from this experience. read more

We started with the prosciutto wrapped shrimp--which we then recreated for our own dinner with friends today--clams, and pear salad. Real china and white tablecloth restaurants are far and few in downtown Hayward. Hence Neumanali is a hidden gem. It's located in an old Victorian across from city hall and has two separate dining areas - the main room downstairs and an upstairs area that probably use to be somebody's parlor but now doubles as an art gallery/dining room. The food is definitely fancy for Hayward standards but then again, anything that isn't served out of a paper bag could be considered hoity-toity. Cream of mushroom soup drizzled with truffle oil, prosciutto-wrapped prawns on a bed of greens, pan-seared halibut, and steak sandwiches. Yes, quite a departure from the Taco Bells, McDonalds, and El Pollo Locos that flood this city. While I've only been here for long working lunches, I am guessing that this could be a rather nice locale for a romantic rendezvous as well. This would be a one-star but i like the look of the restaurant. I've been here twice. The first time, it was good but overpriced. The second time, not good and overpriced. I had a whole fish, that was salty and way overcooked for $29.50. Are you kidding me?!? I sent it back to the kitchen. The waiter was apologetic and sincere, but nothing he could say or do would make up for the food. If this place was in san francisco, it wouldn't last very long, but since it's in hayward I think it will survive. It's one of few "fine dining" options in the area. Had dinner on a week day evening a week ago. Great ambience and delicious food with food but impersonal service which detracted from the dining experience. Poor service was noted in several recent reviews. One male person handled the dining room of ten tables in an officious manner . He was also the maitre 'd. There was no gracious welcome. The food was delivered without comment, nor did he ever check on how the evening and was going . Had to ask for refills of our water glasses. The plates were removed from our table without comment. I ordered dessert and coffee, my friends weren't ask if they wanted coffee. The dinner bill was placed on our table without comment and when it was paid, the credit card was returned to the table without comment or a thank you. He seem offended when I suggested he need more help.I would have preferred a talking robot serving us over the impersonal experience received. I ate at Neumanali over a month ago and I can't get this negative experience off my mind... I NEED to write about it and forget it. My friend ordered a chicken breast dish- rolled and filled with Havarti cheese and asparagus. We were engrossed in our conversation and she failed to notice that the center of the chicken roll was raw. She ate 1 of 4 of the rolls before we looked down to see a pink center. We quickly got the attention of our waiter and quietly to not disturb or gross out other patrons explained the problem. The waiter took away the dish and brought my friend a menu to select something new. She selected the scallops. At this point, we are both a bit grossed out. She ingested raw chicken, that's serious. Long story short. I don't feel management took the necessary follow up for this indiscretion. By no means did I expect our meal to be comped, but when we finally got the bill... nothing was comped. They took the raw chicken dish off the bill and replaced it with the scallops. They even charged us for the two cups of coffee we had at the end of our meal. I purposely did not cause a scene to give them the opportunity to make the situation right. I will not go back or recommend this restaurant, on the basis of poor customer service. The chef did come out and apologized... but that apology should have been reflected on the bill as well. read more

Food - 4 stars Dog friendly - 3 stars Yes, dogs are welcomed on the back patio. You are informed that you will have to leave if other diners complain about your dog. If I complain about other diners, do they have to leave? Thankfully, we were the only ones that Wednesday night so it wasn't an issue. Food is terrific. Hubby and I always share the chopped salad because it's too filling to eat by yourself. Their steaks are the best. I like mine well done with no pink and they somehow can grill my steak so it's well done but still butter soft so that it can be cut with a fork. What a disappointment this place was. From the moment that we arrived, I felt unwelcomed. What should have been a nice evening for my bf's mother, and my bf and I, started off terribly and failed to get any better. When we first walked in, the greeter/waiter pointed us to a table that was right by the door. As it was cold that night, I asked if we could sit elsewhere. He then pointed us to a table that was right by the kitchen...I guess this was an improvement because it was warmer over there, but his attitude about it was anything but warm. Once we were sat, I ordered a glass of wine, and my bf and his mom both had starters. One soup and one very chopped salad. I think those two dishes were the best things on the menu. After they finished their appetizers and I (gasp) finished my glass of wine (which never happens before the meal comes, this should have been a red flag here!!)...our entrees finally arrive. The bf ordered two small plates; scallops and a mashed potato puree and a spicy shrimp dish. The scallops were good, but the shrimp were really overdone. My bf's mom ordered the shrimp dish too and the cioppino. Both were underwhelming. But at least the cioppino dish was really hot....so hot in fact that she had to wait about 10 minutes before she could eat it. My dish was the worst offender of them all. I ordered the trout,. It arrived almost burnt on the top and the "crisp" cauliflower that arrived with it, was chewy and burnt. I ended up giving most of it to my bf, who will eat just about anything. I had a couple of his scallops and most of the mashed potatoes, which were quite good. After about an hour and a half, spent mostly in silence and disappointment, we were (finally) handed the check. We had no idea why the service was so slow, when we were only one of two tables in the place. As we were making our getaway, the Chef came up to us and wanted to know how our meal was. She was a little late. Throughout dinner we noticed that she was chatting up some people that were convening in the lounge session, but had she checked in with us at any point throughout the evening, she would have seen how disappointed we were the whole time. I mean, she was literally mere feet away from us. She did offer my bf's mom a couple of gift certificates, which was a nice gesture, but served up little consolation for a lady that had to suffer the atrocities of a very subpar birthday dinner. read more

We made reservations weeks in advance and were seated right away. Each ordered just an entree. Two hours later we were still waiting. We parked at 7:15 and it was almost 10pm before our two plates hit the table. We were apologized to several times by the waitress and we weren't the only ones, we saw other parties waiting just as long as us, I just don't understand how this happens. When I made reservations I was told they knew they were going to be packed, so how they were unprepared is beyond me. We were minutes away from just walking out. The meal that finally came was tasty, and desserts were comped, but after a two+ hour wait we were both pretty miserable, tired and worried about relieving the babysitter. They also shuffled my plate away mid-pork chop for our desserts so it felt slow and then rushed out to allow them to close or something. Very disappointing first impression. read more

This place used to be the best kept dining secret in Hayward. Imagine a cute little house converted into a restaurant and gallery, serving elevated recipes with wonderful wines. That was my experience years back. I took my foodie boyfriend there months back and they were out of the two best looking dishes on the menu, the Ribeye and the lamb. Now, we were the first seating at 6pm, how could they be out? And with a great meat market right down the street? Our vegetables were cooked to mush and overwhelmed the overcooked pork chop. Which, I was delighted that he asked us what temp we wanted during our order, we said medium and it was past well and dry as a bone. We politely mentioned this to our server when he asked why we had only eaten a few bites. He apologized and took the plate away. We were thinking he would bring us another one or something else but instead he dropped off a desert menu. So we thought, OK maybe he will take it off the bill? We never expect to get something free but it would have been nice for him to still serve us some food since we ate just a small bite. Dessert was great as was my cappuccino (or maybe I was just really hungry?). The bill came and we were charged full price for everything. Kinda sad. The place used to be wonderful. I would have rated this place lower but I am considering the location. You don't get this type of restaurant around here so it's kinda nice to have a defacto fine dining spot. I took my wife here for some reason... probably something I did wrong and I was making up for it. We had the spicy cajun shrimp and it was good but crazy heavy. I feel like they just dumped a lot of heavy cream and then seasoned it. Of course it's going to be good because of all the fat but it hides the natural taste of the shrimp and overloads you with cream. Wife had the pork chop which was well cooked. I had the steak which was overly drenched in some sauce. *sigh* I am big believer that if you have an amazing piece of beef, you don't pour sauce all over it. TLDR; if you live around Hayward and you need go to a fine dining date spot then hit this place up. read more

I should caveat that I haven't been here in at least a year, so perhaps it has improved, but I doubt it. This place has a menu that sounds great and I'm sure that if you are from Kansas it would be the best restaurant ever, but it can't compete with the competition in Oakland and Berkeley (not to mention SF). The prices are high and the food is just OK. Every time we eat here, we decide that it's not worth it for the money (pretty pricey) when there are so many other choices. Our best experience here was coming for a special happy-hour event with cheap appetizers and drink specials. That was great. But for dinner? Head up to A Cote or Pizzaiolo instead. read more
