Known as the oldest bar in Minnesota, Neumanns is an institution in the Saint Paul area. There is a certain charm and character to this local dive bar that I just couldn't get enough of. The space is low lit and filled with plenty of wood and historic fixtures with a small cooktop in the back and a patio off to the side. I stopped in on a Monday durning happy hour to enjoy their half price burger special and a few beverages. The burgers are said to be famous and I was excited. Now, don't go getting your expectations too high. This is a BAR burger that uses what looks to he a frozen patty and pretty generic toppings. However, it is made with a lot of love and honestly tasted fantastic. And on HH, my burger was $5.75. Seriously can't beat that. I also ordered a few whisky sodas on HH at the unbelievable prices of $2.50 a piece. That is simply unheard of. Happy hour offers $1 off drinks so even at full price you are looking at $3.50. ZERO price gouging here. If you are into small, local, dive bars this is the spot to go. I would absolutely recommend this place and certainly will be back. read more

Their specials are amazingly low priced (as is their regular menu). Love their Coney Dogs (on special 3 days a week for $8.50 for 2 dogs and fries) and the M-F burger basket for $8. This place is a classic bar, the oldest continuously operating bar in Minnesota I believe. Decor is classic, has a tin ceiling, classic beer signs and the like. It can get really busy at times, super crowded l, as a random Saturday where I went in for Coney Dogs- the place was overflowing with bikers standing all over the place. It can also get really loud- I felt like I probably got hearing damage from the raucous noice levels of the bikers. The place is great overall. Staff is friendly, decent selection of beers mostly focused on people pleasing domestics and some craft beers (they are in the Pub Pass too). Check it out for some tasty bar food, just be aware you may have to change your mind and walk across the street to Mac's if the place is elbow to elbow busy. read more

Another stop on our PubPass tour. We golfed at Keller and decided to try out Neumann's. The beer was good but be aware that the beer is not their own brew. We opted for burgers and they were fantastic. I had a burger with fried onions. Husband had the Jim Neumann burger (appropriately). He chose tots (extra charge) and I had the standard fries. Fries where the skinny crispy version and they were great. We sat on the patio which was perfect. There was a nice breeze keeping the patrons cool. Service was good. Parking was easy. I've had a good day-drinking divey experience at Neumann's in the past, but our last experience was inexcusable. My friend and I were sitting at the bar (some of the few if not only young women there), and some random guy bought us some shots, which we did not want. The bartender asked us to pay and we told him we did not order them, did not want them, did not drink them, and so we didn't think we should pay for them. His reaction was to swiftly kick us out. We said we'd pay for them (but not drink them) if we could just stay, but he just shouted, "Get out! Get out!", while the skeezy dude was allowed to stay. A woman manager came over and said the bartender was having a bad day, but he acted in a similar hot-headed way to another one of my friends recently. She gets the stars in this review because she apologized and offered to buy us a drink next time we came in, but of course I have no plans to come back. I used to like this historic watering hole, but I felt like we were punished for being hit on by a random dude, and women should absolutely be protected in that situation. read more

Scratch my last review. The bartender here is awful and ill-mannered. Below is a summary of my 2 most recent visits here. The first visit: I walked up to the bar with my husband to order some drinks. Before we even had a chance to order, a paranoid/intoxicated man started screaming at my husband for no reason. The bartender then refused to serve us and kicked us out. The second visit: A random man ordered my friend and I drinks which we did not ask for. We didn't drink the shots and left them on the bar top. The rando refused to pay for them because we did not give him our phone numbers. The bartender dumped the shots down the sink. We even offered to pay for those drinks, but the male bartender raised his voice at us and demanded we leave. He kicked us out, and let the random creepo stay. A female employee overheard and apologized for the bartender's behavior. Gist of the story: I will not be returning. And I advise others to stay clear of Neumann's! read more

We went to Neumann's bar on a Monday during happy hour and the burger baskets were half off. Service was great. The place was packed but we found a place to sit. The burgers are solid. The french fries are awesome. Beers were more expensive than rail drinks which surprised us. But the beers were not expensive either. Overall terrific value, terrific ambience, terrific service. First time visit. My wife and I have always wanted to check our due to her maiden name being the same (no relation) I tried the fish tacos and my wife had the regular tacos. Both of us enjoyed the food. A new twist is that before COVID-19, Neumanns did not accept credit cards. Now with the acceptance of credit cards, there is a fee added for using a credit card. Neumann's Bar, at 127 years young, was the location for Matt G's UYE: Happy Hour V4: Sunday Funday and it was a great choice. Our group enjoyed Sunday Drink Specials ($2 for pretty much any drink from 2-4pm and 8-10pm), live music, and food, food, food! If it was fried, we ordered it and we were not disappointed. French fries, fried pickles, onion rings, tater tots (which were some of the best I've ever had: crispy on the outside and soft, like real mashed potatoes, on the inside) were devoured quickly. The 1/3 lb. burger was simple but delicious. The burgers are $1 on Mondays with a drink purchase. Some friends and I were doing a movie marathon at the nearby Marcus Theaters. We were looking for a place with craft beers, tater tots, and a dress code that included yoga pants and sweatshirts. This fit the bill. I was excited to see that 90 Schilling was on the menu, as well as the regular staples and some other popular craft options. We ordered a big tub of tots and sat for awhile, enjoying he local banter. My reason for the docked stars is twofold: some of the tater tots were still cold inside, and we had a hard time flagging down our server to order them. We ended up ordering from the cook. Well I use to work near Neumanns and returned to support it surviving the force closing and ambiance of the place. It is great place, great meal deals and bullfrogs near the window. I brought my husband with me and wanted to treat him to the great coneys they serve. We ordered our first pitcher of beer as I asked him to check and see if put for seating was available. I returned to the patio with my first pitcher from a great bartender. As we sat the blonde waitress with tattoos ignored us. We tried to get her attention any times but she wasn't having any part of it. We also wanted dinner. Remind you we drove Como Park to get there. Finally I went inside to order another pitcher because after 20 minutes of her seeing we were empty she turned to wait on others. We decided enough is enough. I don't know if it was were were a gay couple or what her issues were. The result is we didn't order more beer or food to help support our hunger and Neumann's bar. Never had this happen in the last 5 years of coming here and will not subject myself by returning. I gave 2 stars to the other friendly staff but we returned to Saint Paul and supported our establishment near us. We also ordered our dinner from Domino's. My mother, sister and I had lunch here and it was really fun. We had burgers, which were delicious. The beer was cold and my 93 yo mother ordered ordered TWO beers! And drank them both. This is a woman who usually asks if she can have a sip, or pours a little into her glass from yours LOL. We are looking forward to coming in the summer to the outdoor patio, which looks very appealing. I really enjoyed the history of the bar on the back of the menu. Very funny! read more

I really like numanns. My dad's girlfriend brought me here on one of the nights they were offering cheap burgers. I was just in there tonight , and my experience was the same.. nothing but exceptional! Flat out outstanding! It's a smaller cozy place to eat and the decor is really neat. It's like biker aroma with a little bit of 'back in the day's atmosphere. It's hard to explain, but its pretty cool inside. This bar and the people that frequent it, are the only reason I stayed in Minnesota. There are many iconic and historic bars in the Twin Cities, but this one has a uniqueness in and of itself thanks to its owners that maintain what Mr. Neumann wanted it to be. There's a book in a case I was allowed to review documenting the oldest continuously running bar in the State's history that said it best. Mr. Neumann refused to close the bar on Thanksgiving because he knew this was the only family some of his patrons had to share the holiday. The Brown Family that owns the bar today is Okie quality and the salt of the Earth. They love their patrons and treat them as family which is carried from the "old timers" that have been coming here for 30-40 years to the newcomers like my first mate and I (my dog) that continues to build on this tradition. I've been a loving and dedicated customer of this bar (I don't even like calling it so because it becomes so much more) and coming from the south, I will say I've found my family of the north. I'm an Okie so I can speak for Mr. Toby Keith with pride and honesty and say, "I love this bar, it's my kind of place. Just rolling through the front door, puts a big smile on my face." Cozy, friendly bar. Plain but not a dive. Supposedly the oldest bar in Minnesota. Dunno about that, it had a tin ceiling and moose heads on the walls. Listened to Black Cat Bone playing blues, loud but fun. Food here is great greasy bar fare. Stopped here Tuesday evening after bicycling with a group. Daily special was 3 coneys for $5. It's an insane amount of food, not just three hot dogs--nope, three coarse-ground sausages on buns smothered with chili and cheese. Several people shared. BLT sandwiches are ginormous things on Texas toast with iceberg lettuce and tons of thick-cut bacon spilling out. Fries here were not my fave but a woman in my group said, "I like these because they're a little overcooked." I read negative reviews about this place saying it was a biker bar. Don't believe it. There were a few bikes in front but a nice mix of patrons from twenty somethings thru bikers to middle-aged suburbanites. Everyone seems welcome here. What a wonderful discovery. We are enjoying exploring some new bars thanks to our 2016 Pub Pass. I used to live in St. Paul and never even found this little area or bar in the past. They have bullfrogs, live music, a juke box, variety on the menu, and spirits and beer to wash it all down with. Our bar host of the day Marissa was the bombdiggity. She works hard and delivers service with a great attitude. I enjoyed a cheeseburger and could sit at the bar and watch it being cooked right in front of me. The guy working the grill was just busy as a bee that day and I have to say we were impressed with the hard work we witnessed and enjoyed listening to some jukebox tunes and chatting up the locals for a bit. I love this place. Burgers are awesome and drink prices are reasonable. They also have a daily food special and they are often very good although I do periodically get something that makes me wish I had just ordered a burger. I've seen complaints about service and the biker clientele. My advice is to avoid the times when there is a biker event. Its pretty obvious when they occur since there will be dozens of high end Harleys out front. If the place is packed, the service suffers....just like any bar. My experience with the staff and patrons has always been good. There are a couple that might seem slightly rude or come off a little short with customers but again I think its just the result of getting busy. Everybody I've seen working here provides great service. I'm certainly not a regular but everytime I walk in I feel welcome. Its a friendly, comfortable place with great food and good drinks. Neumans is a small bar with claims to being the oldest bar in MN. Bikers frequent this bar, but so does everyone else in NSP. There is a small stage for live music, a cute alley-way patio off the west side of the building, & live frogs in a pond in the the front window. Still haven't quite figured out why the frogs are there, but I have come to appreciate them :) The drinks are cheap & the bar food is good, featuring all things fried (cheese, pickles, etc.), burgers, & sandwiches. The food is great if you're into greasyspoon-type burgers and such. In fact, they're very good. The BLT's are huge and on texas toast. This bar is Cash Only- no cc's no debit and no checks. Being in the restaurant business I know a bit about customer service and quality of product. If I were to own a tavern it would definitively be modeled after Neumann's. We were a party of four from Mpls, and stumbled on to Neumann's after a recommendation by one of the local merchants. Melody, our server was totally unbelievable the chef visited our table to make sure we were pleased. Being a vegetation the chef went to extra work to make certain my sandwich was not prepared on the grill with the hamburgers the rest of our party was eating, and all of this during their Monday night happy hour. It's been a very, very long time since I have experienced such great customer service. And by the way the food well worth the trip from Mpls. Stopped in for lunch. Ordered the Coney's and Fries special. The flat top was pretty full with burgers and buns. Took a bit to get room to grill up 2 dogs. After 20 minutes my order was served. Two Coney's and handful of Fries. The fries could be real good, but they were not hot. That made them a disappointment. The Coney's were decent. Nice meaty sauce, instead of a saucy sauce that is very popular in others Coney joints. The natural casing beef dogs were regular size instead of the 10 to a pound size. The dogs were hot enough, but the coney sauce could have been a bit warmer also. Didn't notice what brand buns they use, but they could have been a bit larger to hold the dog, sauce, cheese and onions. All in all, I think the coney's are decent but for me a bit more seasoned sauce. Long ago, I visited this place quite often. In those days, they did not have much for food. Pickled Eggs is all I remember. Maybe beer nuts too. But we were not there for food. Cheap pitchers was good for us !!! Probably $1.50 a pitcher of domestic tap beer. I did have to use the restroom and be reminded of the nice art work on the walls. A couple of vintage nudies and a deck of nudie cards. Not sure if these are paintings or photos of actual ladies. But very classy pictures. The story is they used to have a picture of a handsome guy in the ladies room with only a fig leaf covering up his man parts. Story is, if a woman lifted the fig leaf a buzzer went off for all patrons to hear. Typically, she would come out all red faced . Never knew about that in my earlier days. But then not many woman went there either. Nice place to hang out with a few friends for some beverages and ok priced foods. One dollar burgers on Monday nights with a beverage purchase. Extras are extra but not sure how much. Wonder if a soda qualifies as a beverage purchase? Dine in only on this special. No getting a dozen burgers for a boys night out at someones house. read more
