This place has gone down hill. We ordered 2 special ham bahnmi and an order of eggrolls for $34 & it was the worst $34 I've spent. The bread was falling apart and you couldn't even taste the ham. It was thin and barely any in there. If you want to eat veggies in a bahnmi bread that's falling apart, sure go for it but don't call it a bahnmi, literally a disgrace. Not only that but they must have a new Indian worker. He didn't seem to want to be there at all and he works so slow. He moved onto the next order and realized he forgot to give us our food. We both ordered the chicken panang curry. The flavor of the sauce is great. The chicken, however, is very thinly sliced and VERY overcooked. My dish had two pieces of onion that were from the outside so had no soft onion on them, just the tough, fibrous outer layer of the onion. I do understand that this could have simply been a mistake by the prep cook, but with the chicken being so terribly tough and overcooked, it was very disappointing. Surprised to find this level of flavor at a mall food court. Went on a Saturday around 4PM. The ladies at the counter were super friendly. The Bun Boe Hue is what caught my eye but I opted for a grilled pork Banh Mi. It was wonderful. I had tried Lu's on Nicollet for my last 2 Banh Mi and oddly enough this was a better sandwich. This is a classic, hole in the wall like wonder for authentic Vietnamese food in Maplewood Mall- that's right in a mall! I don't think anyone has much expectations for mall food court food in general- but if they did this place definitely 100% exceeds expectations. I've had the pho, banh mi, spring rolls and bubble tea here and I leave happy every time! I do think the pho portion is small but the amount of meat you get is generous and they have all the condiments you need on the side. The banh mi also has a generous portion of protein and the spring roll sauce is the best! I grabbed a sandwich on my way out. Probably the worst idea. I thought hey how can they mess up a Banh mi sandwich? Well, it's possible. I ordered the grilled pork sandwich. The lady grabbed some pork from the cold bar and put it on a plate to be reheated. That should of been the first red flag. The meat was hard and solid and was hard to chew. New younger cashier. It is usually the aunties that take my order. We ordered two bowls of pho for my kids and ended up waiting 30+ minutes. We talked to the cashier about our missing order twice. She walked to the back and came back to her cash register. It was not until the outgoing louder extroverted lady came out and started yelling out order numbers. I eat Pho at least 2-3 times a week (homemade, take-out, eat-in, you name it), one could say that I am a connoisseur of pho. The pho at Taste of Saigon is the real deal. The broth is dark and rich, the meat and garnishing are quality, and the portions are perfect. Alright, let's keep things in check here. We are in the food court. At the Maplewood Mall. So the scale on which we rate should be a little skewed. At least that's what I think, and I'm writing the review, so suck it. I only came here for a quick pick me up. A little something to get me to dinner. Fresh Spring Rolls should do it. Boy, did they. Fresh. Meaning when I ordered it, the owner walked back and started to assemble them. Big pieces of shrimp and pork. Very fresh mint and cilantro. The wrapper nice and springy and sticky. So many other places the wrapper is getting hard as it sat out for days. Not here. Fresh and tasty. The 2 people working the counter, owners I assume, married I assume. So so friendly and nice. A smile goes a long way in the services industry. I asked for the lighter sweet and hot fish sauce in addition to the peanut sauce. Both were awesome and both were definitely homemade. And both given with a smile and without an extra charge. 3 huge fresh spring rolls. $5 (maybe $6, I can't remember for sure). Either way, a spectacular deal. I will be back to try the Pho. They have it all set up in separate tins and add each ingredient to the bowl of Pho and then spoon in the broth. Looks and smells fantastic. You can see the huge pot of broth simmering on the stove. A small Vietnamese place inside a mall. The best item I got was the cream cheese puffs. Also got their special pho, egg rolls, spring rolls, and mango bubble tea. Their pho broth was just okay not something I'd get again but it had chicken, beef and meatballs, not quite worth it for almost $10. The eggrolls and spring rolls were more vegetable and not much meat and dipping sauce was just all peanut. The service was lacking. The cashier asked what I wanted, took my money and then walked away. I assumed I went to anther person for the accrual pho. Lucky for me 5 minutes later, a bowl of beef pho showed up. So.. the broth was sweet and flavorful. The beef was like jerky. No fresh slices of beef. I, too, would like to chime in and reiterate that this is in the Maplewood Mall's food court. For all those complaining about the customer service, check your expectations for at the door. It's in a freaking food court, not a five-star restaurant. With that being said, I started coming here on a regular basis around lunchtime for their pho while on my way home from the library -- the parking lot for Kohl's and the mall's food court is literally across the street from RCL - Maplewood. Ring the bell by the register if there's nobody behind the counter. (Just don't be a jerk about it -- it's kind of a loud bell!) The ladies who work there are very nice and work quickly to get your food out to you. A bowl of regular pho runs about $8. You can get either beef or chicken. A combo bowl runs for $9. You don't get very many options as far as pho goes which I'm fine with because it's food court food and meant to get out to people ASAP. I've ever only ordered the beef pho. You get slices of beef, tendons, meatballs. The beef is flavorful and they give you a pretty decent amount. Their broth is probably my favorite. It's the perfect sized bowl for someone with an average appetite -- I mean, you finish it, and you shouldn't feel like you need to be wheelbarrowed out and go into a food coma. It's fairly satisfying. I'm gonna be straight with you guys... this is my favorite place to grab a bowl of pho. They offer takeout, which I have no experience with (yet). I have been here a few times, and I always enjoy their food. I really like how not only that they make it fresh, but the people who work here are really nice and friendly. I always come away with a smile on my face. My favorite menu item here is their bun mi sandwiches. Order the spicy noodle soup $10. The soup taste ok but the big problem is the temperature of the food. This is ridiculous to get a lukewarm noodle soup. I feel like they just reheat the soup little and dump all the veggie, meat and noodle in. How can you get lukewarm noodle soup when I just order and even wait for the order to get ready, and there aren't any customer but me. This is so stupid. As others have said, this place is in a food court, in the Maplewood mall. Its not going to be life changing food. That being said, the Pho was pretty good, as were the spring rolls. Both were made to order, so the rolls took a few extra minutes to prepare. Only bummer was having to use a regular plastic spoon instead of the usual asian soup spoon (its a lot deeper and easier to eat the broth). But again, Food Court. Its expected. read more

Taste of Saigon at Maplewood mall. The people working here are rude especially the lady at the cashier. I ordered egg rolls and pho and the egg rolls were just okay. I asked for iced water from their soda dispenser and the lady was not happy because she was trying to sell me the bottled water instead. The pho would have been good but too much fatty meat and not sure about the CLEANLINESS of their ingredients! There was a piece of plastic strand in my pho that was color white - width is similar to the noodles strand. So I went to the cashier nicely and told her that there was a piece of plastic in my pho and was just asking her to replace it in a NICE WAY!!! I was surprised that the people working here are not the nicest people to deal with! They were very rude and took the piece of plastic strand and was telling that what I am claiming was not true! The plastic strand was mixed with my noodles, why would I lie about that? I almost swallowed that plastic strand if I wasn't too careful. The lady at the counter was VERY RUDE along with the other people working with her and instead of replacing it- they took the plastic pieces that I showed them and threw it away and returned my money. To be honest, it is not about the money , I didn't expect the the people working here especially the cashier would be SO RUDE! I will not go back to this place and will not recommend the place because of the terrible service and rude staff!!! The pho is so good and delicious! The terrible part is the portion is so small for $8-9! If it was at a regular pho restaurant, you would get almost double the portion for the same cost! It's worth it if you don't mind the price for the small portion because pho is all about the broth and it's better than a lot of pho places on university. The sandwich was alright, not a lot of meat and stuffed with veggies. I was very disappointed in the bubble tea! The pearls were super old and soggy and not fresh! Horrible service. Every time without fail, the young lady who assembles the pho never looks up at me nor say anything. Three times now that I had to ask her for a piece of lime and when I did, she looked up at me as if I disrupted her day and furrow her eyebrows at me then quickly picks up a piece of lime and drops it on my tray trying to hurry back. I had to stop her again, this time to ask about my bubble tea and she stopped and looked at the ticket to make sure it's there, and as if I wasn't right in front of her, she looked out into the tables where patrons sit to enjoy their meal and yelled "one honeydew bubble tea coming up next" and hurried to the back and dumped some ice into the blender and came right back and slammed the drink onto the counter without even glancing at me and hurried to the back kitchen. There was no one else in line so I don't understand why she was in such a hurry. Oh yeah, by the way, about 1 hour after consuming the pho, I spent 1 hour in the restroom at JCPenny (this was another nightmare in itself). One star because the food is ok - and because I have no choice...but seriously the service sucks balls, like seriously salty balls that have been dragged through the mud and unwashed for weeks. First of all, the ladies there NEVER smile at you...NEVER. Then when they finally greet you, it's a half-assed forced 'hello', if anything, they take your order, and disappear...no 'ok, your food will be up on the other end' or something. Oookaaaay, I'll just walk away and go stand over here now... The last time was the final straw, I went there and stood in line for about five minutes...and five minutes is a long time to be JUST standing in any line waiting for service - watching them walk around, not acknowledging me or anything. Nothing was on fire, no one was throwing knives into the back, so I don't understand why none of the three ladies that I saw could stop for .05 seconds to be like 'someone will be right with you'. They walked past the front register where I was over and over again, glancing at me and I'm like like yeah 'any minute now, say hello'. Nope, nothing. There was ONE customer physically at the end of the line where the food is picked up waiting for their food...and I'm sure others were sitting at the tables waiting, but that's no excuse for such shit service...I was the only person standing there! Their Pho is the smallest size I ever saw, and their customer service incredibly sucks. The cashier and also may be the owner, I assume, yelled at me when I asked for 1 more pair of chopstick for my Pho.
