Hodgkins Masonry did an awesome job with a recent project at my residence…read more Steve the owner, helped to problem solve and fix a very unfortunate project gone bad, then worse. I explained the situation and he came right away to check it out, we worked out a game plan and budget that worked with what I could afford, and I went from super unhappy to happy and a new satisfied customer. I will definitely call him again for masonry needs. As I have mentioned in some of my other reviews, I come from a family of trades professionals with extremely high standards and expectations -- Steve fits right in there, and here's why: Customer Service He is reliable and accountable. He honors his commitments, shows up on time, and communicates if there is going to be any variance in schedule. He is very clear about setting expectations, and is extremely respectful about answering questions in a matter of fact manner so that complex related things are made very simple to understand. Work Ethic & Quality Steve has an an excellent work ethic, can assess a problem very quickly and get a plan of action. He looks at multiple possibilities, and is very realistic with what he proposes. He is also friendly, and his quality of work is impeccable. He is very respectful of your property, cleaning and locking up when finished which is so nice! Would I recommend him? Highly! If you want someone who you can put your highest confidence and trust in, this is the person you want to hire. His costs are extremely fair, he is very honest and transparent about everything, so you always know where you stand. If I had more budget I would have him do more projects for me. I also recently saw the fireplace he built at my neighbors house and it was gorgeous. Call him, he'll make your house beautiful with his stone work. 10 stars, highly recommend!

I have been so pleased each and every time! My last project was new patio steps from my back kitchen sliding glass door down onto the concrete patio. I wanted something different and artistic. Together we designed large, wide steps with multiple curves. I couldn't be happier! John is always professional, timely, thorough, very friendly, easy to communicate with, and it takes pride in his craft. He is also clear in his estimates and pricing (never a surprise bump in the bill at the end). Clearly, I enthusiastically recommend him and his company. Thank you, John and crew!

Unlike the other contractors that came to my house, John came prepared to help me select options and had photographs of previous jobs. He listened to what I had to say and answered all of my questions and unlike the others John gave me a very thorough bid. He answered all of my phone calls and never made it seem like my questions were a bother. The patios came out beautiful and John stopped by to check on them at least twice after the job was done. He takes pride in this work and it shows.

Very expensive for the outcome received…read more I am leaving a factual review based on my experience. The quoted price was $8,000 for weed-eating and yard cleanup on a 0.55-acre property, including the house area, on hilly terrain in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The property had not been maintained for some time, and some of the weeds were over a foot high. There were also leaves, a burn pile to be hauled away, and another pile to be cut up and moved toward the neighboring side. I additionally asked that leaves be thinned and blown away from the area near the deck. The work took two days with a crew of three. To be fair, the contractor was responsive when other businesses were not, and he was generally professional in communication. He also completed the work as narrowly described in the contract. My main concern is that, given the very high price, the final result still left a substantial amount of leaf and stick debris across the yard. After the crew finished, my wife spent the next two days raking and filling approximately 30 thirteen-gallon bags of leaves from the property. That strongly suggests to me that the leaf thinning and cleanup were not done to the standard I expected for a project at this price point. Another issue was that when I asked for additional thinning of the leaves, I was told that this was not specifically included in the contract. That may be true contractually, but it highlighted a broader problem: as a customer unfamiliar with foothill yard maintenance, I was relying on the contractor's professional judgment to define what a good finished result should look like. In my view, that guidance was lacking. There was also a personal comment made during the job that my wife found disrespectful. To be fair, he did apologize, and I will leave it at that. My overall impression is that the work was performed to the minimum required by the written scope rather than to the standard most customers would expect from a premium-priced yard cleanup. My advice to other customers: Get multiple quotes before committing. Ask neighbors what is typical for similar work in the area. Define cleanup expectations in writing, especially for leaves, sticks, and yard debris. Make sure the scope describes the expected end condition, not just the tasks to be performed. Price the job by clear deliverables, not vague effort.

The Yard Guy came highly recommended as the only guy who could fix my problem! Tim is one of the…read moremost likable guys around, but I have to agree with some of the reviews. The estimate provided was for 3 days of what Tim described as very hard and physical labor for his guys. It was reportedly work that couldn't be done using a ditch digger or heavier equipment because of rocks and location. It turned out that it didn't need any of those things. It was 1 man digging with a shovel, in fill dirt! If I knew how to or what a french drain even was, I could have done that part! The entire job took little more than half a day, including a trip to the dump! The drain does its job fine! I recommend using The Yard Guy for that type of work! They did a fine job on a french drain to capture water coming down my hillside. However, the problem they were called for was NOT water coming down my hill. It pertained to water entering my shower through my foundation or rock wall. The french drain did nothing to fix that issue. The work done at or near the foundation actually seemed to have exacerbated the problem by creating a more direct or easier path for the water! To be fair, Tim told me it was possible what they were doing wouldn't fix the problem and I understood that, but I still thought it would be a move in the right direction. Admittedly, there was work done, during that 5-6 hours, such as digging and cement, rocks moved, things purchased to do the job such as perforated pipe, cement, sand, etc., and finally moving all that beautiful fill dirt to the dump (that I had to pay for separately!). I fully believed that Tim's description made the drain seem very necessary and very difficult...yet, the work I watched and end-result didn't live up! When he became aware that the labor needed and expended wasn't anywhere as extensive as he thought it would be and took nearly 2.5 days less than estimated, I think he should have reduced his fee. Also, when I contacted him to report the problem was the same or worse as a result of additional rain and possibly because of the work done, Tim advised me that the problem was much more extensive than he had believed and then he made several phone calls on my behalf and recommended additional work and expense. Like I said really nice guy! I just wish he had said, I can't fix YOUR problem, but maybe a nice french drain will help with water coming down your hill! I think I was in a desperate situation and it resulted in a nice $6K 30 foot french drain! I do feel taken advantage of when all was said and done.

Chris contacted me and I could not be happier with his service! Not only did he save the day for my client and the sale of her home, he was courteous, timely, helpful and did quality work at a fair price. He didn't pass us up knowing that job wasn't a huge one. He didn't charge an exorbitant amount knowing we were in a bind. What mattered to him was that my client and I were happy and taken care of. And because of that, my client hired him for a much much larger job at their newly purchased home! As it turned out my husband and I were also in the process of getting bids for a large addition to our house. Chris gave us a very fair bid. We hired him, and again, so so glad we did. He and his crew are on time, work hard every day, and do excellent work. He keeps us informed of the activity and timelines, and knows how to manage materials to get the most use. He does not skimp or cut corners, he does quality work. We are very happy with Chris Gates Construction. I have recommended him to all my clients in need of a contractor and he hasn't let me down once! They all have rave reviews of him as well. Hire Chris Gates! But wait until he finishes our addition ;) lol.
