An entire aisle devoted to noodles, shelves lined with teas that carry centuries of tradition, an eclectic produce section where purple sweet potatoes rest beside Asian pears, pandan leaves perfume the air, and every basket seems to hold a new story waiting to be cooked. Some of my favorite treasures are the bun bò Huế noodles, the purple sweet potatoes, crisp Asian pears, fresh pandan, and the endless array of fun drinks that always convince me to try something new. Every visit feels like a small adventure. And then there are the little surprises that make this place unforgettable: an incredible pho restaurant tucked inside, a jewelry shop sparkling quietly nearby, and families from every background filling their carts with pieces of home. What I admire most is that places like Lee Lee's do more than sell groceries--they preserve memory. They help grandparents pass recipes to grandchildren. They give immigrants a taste of familiarity. They invite curious people to discover cultures different from their own with open hands and open hearts. He said that the last brand didn't sell well and they put everything on sale to clear it out. He gave me an uncertain timeline of two weeks for a restock, but it didn't sound real. I am from out of town, and it's a two hour drive, and I came singularly for the frozen mock meat. I did walk the isles and they do have a lot of items to choose from that you will not find in a typical American supermarket, and I picked up some interesting sauces and condiments I hadn't seen before, which was good. Very, very bad was the bathroom. There was a pool of dirty water on the floor with a mop and pail. The latch on the single sit down stall was broken and I walked in on someone. The sinks are stained and dirty. The smell is bad and overwhelming. They need to clean it and wipe it down and fix the sit down stall latch. All in all, the store has a lot of asian products you will not find in supermarkets, they are comme ci, comme ça! ‍ on frozen mock meat products, and somebody really needs to clean their men's bathroom.

I'd already been to one of my usual Asian markets, forgot half of what I needed (because apparently I like making life difficult), and figured I'd give this place a shot. My first thought walking in was, "Oh, this is smaller than I expected." About three minutes later I realized, "No... it's just efficiently packed." The produce section keeps going farther than you think, the shelves are stocked with all the staples I recognize, and then you hit the meat department... and wow. Seafood, pork, lamb, goat, beef bones, organ meats--you name it, they probably have it. If you're looking for something that makes the average grocery store employee say, "We don't carry that," this is probably where you'll find it. I grabbed pho spices, fish sauce (and was genuinely excited to find a vegan fish sauce option!), two pounds of beef bones, and an onion for about $15. Honestly? I expected to spend more. I also stumbled across a Jamaican section, which completely caught me off guard in the best way. I was there with tunnel vision, otherwise I probably would've wandered around for another half hour convincing myself I suddenly needed ingredients for three different cuisines. The checkout was quick, the cashier was friendly, and while the parking lot was surprisingly quiet, don't let that fool you. This isn't one of those giant, chaotic destination markets, feels more like the neighborhood spot where people already know they can find what they need. It is nicely organized which made my quick stop in very easy. I'll definitely be back. Next time I'm giving myself permission to actually browse instead of speed-running my shopping list. Having spent time in Northern CA, I love the stuff. So the search was on for for dumplings, noodles and my favorite, Lumpia. Chinese new year is a week away, so why not. So I found Lam's in Avondale. Lam's is a medium size market with merchandise squeezed into every nook of the store. The isles are someone narrow and have a dizzying array of things to take in. They have a nice meat market with seafood galore. They also have candy of all types and prepared food for takeout. There's just too much to describe. What I thought was really neat, was that they have isles for each ethnicity; Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and even Jamaican. I was looking for banana sauce for my Lumpia and found that it was not with the other Chinese sauces. I had to look for it in the Filipino section. Interestingly, the crowd there was very diverse. If you need fresh seafood or anything Asian food related, I can't imagine not finding it at Lam's! I will let my photos do the talking.

Somewhere along the journey I became determined to find the deli olives that were on sale... but could not for the life of me figure out which counter they belonged to. I also didn't want to interrupt anyone because the place was busy, so instead I just wandered around looking suspiciously like someone casing the olive situation. That said, I was shocked at how much I ended up with for how little I paid. Organic tahini, Biscoff cookies (obviously), a few pickled items, some produce... somehow my cart kept filling up while my total stayed reasonable. I also realized halfway through that I should have bought a kettle here instead of the one I recently purchased elsewhere. Regrets. I was definitely a busy day at the market with lots of interesting stuff, especially if you like foods a little outside the norm. It's a bit out of my way for regular trips, but I could see myself swinging back through on Wednesdays for the deals... and possibly finishing my olive investigation.

Awhile back they came to mind to discover they opened a larger market over near me. In reality I'm close to either but the big store I luv. They house a restaurant that makes fresh Middle Eastern bread. Baklava bar that is insanely good, and their butcher bar is amazing including Hilal meats (research Hilal meat better than how our American meat is processed). Hilal is like Kosher in that it is a religious way they render their meats. Back to the review they added an olive bar and I'm a green Olive fanatic. Try the grilled green olives if you go and you'll get your life. Produce is fresh and reasonably priced. It services middle eastern and African cuisine ingredients primarily but it is a really nice market. Fluffy Grandma recommends.
