My fiance and I dropped by last week when we were vacationing in Kauai. We attended a women's class (the instructor, Lea, made an exception for my fiance) and the beginner's class after that. I loved the women's class with Lea -- there were four other female white belts like myself, and I very much enjoyed witnessing and being part of their camaraderie. Lea taught technique in a clear way, and explained the concepts behind the technique. I was the only female in the beginner's class, and the warm-ups were kind of rough especially after just finishing another class, but I managed to more or less get through it. :) The instructor taught some interesting technique that I will also try to incorporate into my game. The other men in the class were also friendly; I didn't get to roll with all of them, but the one that I did get to go with wasn't trying too hard to bite my head off. Overall, great vibes here. OK, after 8+ years after quitting and sitting on the sidelines and watching my two sons progress to championship and gold medal levels in their training, I finally pulled the trigger and decided to get back on the mats! First a little history...when I first started training JJ about 10 years ago, it was in a very non-structured type dojo. That is to say, while the instruction was good and produced very skilled athletes..it was only good for those that could pick up on things naturally or quickly, but not so good for those of us that needed more time and repetition and guidance. The end result,for me, was a series of near debilitating injuries that forced me to discontinue my passion for training. For years, I had dismissed the idea of resuming my learning for fear of re-injuring myself. I had come to the conclusion that Jiu jItsu was a "young man's" game, and resigned myself to watching and supporting my sons as they progressed. A few year ago this dojo became affiliated with the BJJ Revolution Team under Sensei Johnny Ramirez, and I must say it has been nothing short of a blessing! The head instructors Kaeo and Kaleo Lopez were always wonderful to work with...and now add in the structure, and the curriculum that the BJJ Revolution affiliation brings in, and Id say it is the perfect place to train...no matter how old or young you may be!! I have recently returned to training and am feeling better than ever on the mats! The training schedule is segregated so that beginners get excellant,detailed instruction on the fundamentals of the art, and are adequately prepared for more advanced classes when they are ready..and no sooner. Of course, there are classes for advanced belts etc.. but there are also classes for beginners and for "older" folks, along with youth and ladies-only classes, so no matter who you are, you will be in a very comfortable and relaxed environment no matter what your level of skill is. If you are up to it there are striking and MMA classes held also! The school has, and continues to produce championship level competitors in both tournament Jiu Jitsu and MMA... instruction is great! Visitors and travelers are ALWAYS welcome and treated like family!! The attitude and vibe of the senseis and students are 100% Aloha...the rates are super reasonable...I cant think of a better place to get a fantastic workout and learn the beautiful art of Jiu Jitsu anywhere. Was visiting Kauai for a week. One of my training partners from my home academy moved back to Kauai and this is the place he trains. Now I see why he was so good. This is an awesome place to roll. Tough warm-up/workout. Great training partners who rolled hard but technical. Everyone is very technical and friendly. They drill a lot. The black belt instructor Kaleo is a great teacher. He explains the moves very well and allows for lots of repetitions. I attended the Competition training classes and had a blast. Made some new friends. I've been with the team for over 6 years now and it put it simply New Breed Kauai is much more then just a Jiu Jitsu school, it's a way of life. I came in originally to get exercise and continue my martial arts discipline, but I soon found that this team wasn't just about martial arts. It's a school to grow yourself as a better person mentally, physically and be to introduced into a family of friends that are invaluable. Over my time with this school I learned how to use my body in ways I never knew possible. Martial arts are for self defense and with these Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills I have defended my self from violent attackers and ended the attacks without so much as taking a single punch or throwing one myself. Hey, Jiu Jitsu Friends!! I live in NYC and was travelling to Hawaii for my vacation. While enjoying the sun at Kauai, I decided to try out "New Breed Jiu Jitsu Kauai" school. It was great!! When I got to the school, I met a very nice lady named Lea Young who was an instructor teaching the class that night. The entire training experience there was amazing!! First of all, I felt very welcomed. Secondly, the environment in the class was very positive. Then, the techniques that Lea was teaching were great. I remember that I even used one of the moves during rolling time and... it worked. :) When I come back to Kauai, I will definitely train at New Breed Jiu Jitsu again!! I tried Jiu-Jitsu for a month before moving to Kauai. And I honestly hated it because it was just too much to comprehend. After a year of living on Kauai I finally went to newbreed to do their kickboxing classes because that's my background. After a year I finally tried the women's Jiu-Jitsu class and let me tell you, I have tried to come to every women's class and beginners class since then. Lea is an awesome instructor. She emphasizes on technique so you'll never leave the gym wondering what you've learned. Kaleo & Aggie are also great teachers. What I really like about newbreed is that we keep on drilling until we understand what we are doing and each class is based off what we've learned so everything flows. The higher belts are also awesome as they always help you. You can never feel intimated at newbreed. Anyone there is always there to help you and they never make you feel stupid when you don't understand something or when you have a million questions lol! read more

Luckily I came across this place online looking for a place that offers Muay Thai or MMA and did I score. I came looking for a work out to get back in shape and got a whole lot more than that. Great people, great attitudes and hardcore training. So stoked I chose to train at New Breed. All the trainers have great helpful advice and between all of them they will make you out to be a WELL rounded MMA fighter or enthusiast. I visited New Breed Academy during the second week of my honey moon. I was walking around the town of Kappa and happened to stumble by the New Breed dojo. I met the black belt owner and explained I was interested in training. I was welcomed to train and was provided with the class schedule. I returned two days later to train in the advanced Gi Jiu Jitsu class. There were about 10 students in the class. Every student took the time to introduce themselves to me prior to class. The warm up consisted of crawls and drills. The warmup was followed by positional sparring and regular rolling. The students were skilled and trained purposefully without hurting one another. All of the students trained hard but safe. I really enjoyed my visit and would recommend anyone in the area to give them a try. If I lived in the area I would seriously consider making New Breed my home gym. Great group of guys on the mats and solid training. I highly recommend! read more
