My favorite restaurant for Chinese food in Imperial Valley. I have found out over the years you can order dishes that aren't on the menu. One dish I recommend is known as the IID Special, it's a blend of mixed vegetables and mixed meats...ask for it with black bean sauce and chili if desired. Atmosphere is great, prices are very reasonable with large portions and the service is attentive. It's rated one of the Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in the U.S. I'm so glad it's here in Imperial Valley. read more

Good American Chinese food. The portions are very, very generous and should account for multiple meals of leftovers for most. Service was lacking, as our server forgot to take our orders (tail end of lunch rush) and also failed to make contact (for a bill) after after we had clearly been done for some time. read more

Their food is good. It's different than I had pre-moving to the valley. They make OUTSTANDING chow fun. We also love the pan fried chicken and the fish and vegetables. A really delicious fish is fried tofu and vegetables. They don't overlook the veggies. read more

I have ate here about 20 times and the way I would describe my experience is not great. It's better to eat here than to order their take-out. If you dine in then your food will be hot and plentiful. If you order take-out you will get skimped and your food will be cold. A lot of the food here is made before you order it so its often soggy. It's rarely fresh, but when it is the taste of the food is better. Most of the food I have had from this place is either to salty or bland. Nothing in between. I would describe this place as not consistent at all I would rate it a 4.4 out of 10. I hope this helps someone. read more

I got the family dinner for two and it came with a lot of food. All the food came out slightly warm - like they reheated it in the microwave. I had pork fried rice - decent but the pork was cold and dry, chicken lo mein, sweet and sour chicken, salt and pepper chicken, and Mongolian beef - the best dish there. All the other dishes were decent. The food was bland and lacked flavor. I don't plan on eating here again. read more

I had the opportunity to eat lunch at Fortune House in El Centro recently, and I found it to be a decent Chinese (or, more accurately, Chinese-American) restaurant. Service was professional and efficient, prices were quite reasonable, portions were huge, and the food was all right (though not exceptional). It certainly seems popular with the locals, as it was about three quarters full on an early Sunday afternoon. Located in an area that was dominated by fast food joints and taquerias, it was about the best that I could have hoped for in terms of Asian food. For lunch, I ordered one of the restaurant's combination meals. This one consisted of an Egg Roll, Pork Fried Rice, Chicken Chow Mein, and Salt and Pepper Fish. I started with the Egg Roll, which was perfectly deep fried, so that it was crispy on the outside and not greasy. Inside, the Egg Roll was stuffed mainly with shredded cabbage and green onion, so that it was a bit on the bland side. No dipping sauce accompanied the Egg Roll; although I was glad I wasn't abused once again with that cloying, ketchup-based dipping sauce that one finds in way too many Chinese restaurants in the United States, a light dipping sauce would have been nice. It could have been something as simple as a mixture of rice vinegar, salt, sugar, and a tiny bit of vinegar, which would have nicely complemented the flavors of vegetables inside the Egg Roll. Like the Egg Roll, the Pork Fried Rice was also simple and straightforward. Tossed with soy sauce and bits of char-siu pork, carrots, celery, and green onion, it was fried properly, so that it wasn't too greasy. Like the Egg Roll, however, it was also a bit bland. At the very least, it could have used some garlic and a bit more of the pork. The use of chili-infused noodles gave the Chicken Chow Mein more liveliness than it would otherwise have had. This was a very simple, five-ingredient dish, consisting only of the noodles, soy sauce, cooking oil, bits of chicken, and bean sprouts. It could have been as boring as boiled sawdust, had it not been for the heat and color of the chili noodles. The reddish color of the chili noodles gave some visual interest to this dish, which would otherwise have been dominated by too much brown, while the heat from the chili noodles actually pulled all of the other ingredients together to produce a pleasing final result. Chilis featured even more prominently in the Salt and Pepper Fish. This dish followed the usual recipe, with battered and deep fried chunks of fish thrown into a wok and stir- fried with sliced-up onions and chili peppers. However, it was executed well, so that the fish chunks were only slightly greasy and the vegetables were cooked through properly. Red or green chili peppers would have added more visual appear to the dish, but that is only a minor complaint. In reality, the Salt and Pepper Fish was the best dish in the entire meal. The bottom line: Fortune House opts for the simplest possible route to a deent meal. Sometimes simplicity works in its favor, allowing the technique of its kitchen staff to shine through. Sometimes it hiurts, resulting in dishes that are bland and a little boring. While none of the dishes that I had there were truly awful, the uneveness of Fortune House's cooking was too great to be ignored. For this reason, I am giving Fortune House a rating of 3/5 stars. Its reasonable prices, large portions, and good service actually elevate its rating a bit above 3/5 stars for me, but not enough to round up to a 4/5 star rating. read more

Went there on lunch hour thinking everything will be fresh and hot, boy was i wrong. 1st they took forever to sit us down , did not even know who was first in line to be sited. 2nd the food was very cold no steam coming out of any p!ate that we order. So i had to get up look for a waiter to let him know whats was wrong with the food. They took it just change the rice and left the same fish and chow main there, i know because i took a picture. Thats the way i am. Nobody complains of this maybe because they are in a hurry or just to hungry to do it . Next time you order let them know you want it hot and fresh. read more

Every time I come to the Valley to visit my family we get takeout from Fortune House. It is always super yummy!!!! The portions are large and their prices are reasonable. I love their BBQ pork!!!!! Yum!!!! read more

We drive over here from Yuma because it's so good. Have yet to find anything on the menu we didn't like. The lunch specials and combos are extremely reasonable with huge portions. Chop Suey is perfectly done with a very tasty sauce. read more

We go here 1-2 times a week my husband loves the garlic shrimp. Even the half order is sizable. And the shrimp are very large. Always great service and the owner and girls up front are always friendly. Clean and unlike other places you get extra napkins without asking and when you get iced tea they bring out a dish of lemons. For me it is important that they hav tofu and veggie dishes. I am a vegan and it is hard to find anywhere in imperial valley that isn't unhealthy Mexican food or fast food junk. HUGE PORTIONS! I love getting the shrimp and broccoli here, I have had shrimp and broccoli everywhere, and I SWEAR, this is the best!

My family ordered take out today. Everyone but my 5 year old ate. Now she is the only person not vomiting. I called them to report the problem and get a refund. They refused to discuss it and hung up! I will never eat there again and I advise others from doing so. And tomorrow, I will be giving the health department a call. In my opinion the food at this place is the best Chinese food in the imperial valley, I have had most dishes available here. My favorites are Salt and Pepper Fish and Mongolian Beef but all food I have had here is good. I have had better tasting Kung Pao Chicken elsewhere but the one here is still good. The New owners are a little rude (money oriented) but the food is great. I have eaten at most if not all the Chinese food restaurants in the valley this is # 1 the worst Chinese food is at the Twin Dragon in Calexico it is so bad I could not eat the food, it went from the kitchen to the table to the trash. nothing like going to a Chinese restaurant owned by a bunch of Mexicans. the food is phenomenal. honey walnut shrimp are always good here. the food is very consistent and i don't taste a lot of MSG. i can't give this place a 4/5 star because this place is dirty as hell and parking is bad. read more

I use to really like fortune house until today 06/19/2016. I ordered two personal combos for take out and as we were eating I found a one inch Hot Cheeto in my chicken chow mein! Wtf! will definitely be calling tomorrow morning. Dirty! read more

We were there last night we were not very happy with the service or the food. They took our order and they got our food in about 7 mins,but the food was cold, it did not look fresh at all. They never came back to see if we needed anything or if our food was good. They did come quickly for the money. They offered us boxes to go but they never asked why we left all of our food.
