Called and spoke to Mike about the woodsman saw. Unfortunately for me they no longer make them- but that didn't keep him from spending plenty of time explaining what to look for, what to check, and to make sure I had enough common sense to be around equipment meant for men, real men. I was advised that blades are available and got a quick primer on how to sharpen one. I've read some reviews about him and how he's "rude". maybe.. if you're thin skinned and can't deal with his raw, unfiltered style. If you enjoy paying for parts you didn't need and take pleasure at being verbally abused, this is the place - you're gonna to love it! A couple of months ago I was about to conclude a transaction at the cash register when another customer walked up behind me, engaged in conversation with Mike and they left the room together, leaving me waiting for Mike to return. After some minutes I left the store. Today I brought in a lawnmower part that needed 5 minutes of attention and would include the sale of a new drive belt. Mike told me that I was a jerk for having left the last time I was there and therefore wouldn't be ready until sometime tomorrow. Asking for my part back, I told him I would not be returning. He hurled insults at me as I walked out the door. It's sad to see what this business has become. It is without any inventory of new equipment and is a dealer for no brand. Given Mike's extremely unpleasant behavior, there's just no reason to do business there, and plenty of reason not to. read more

My older model Toro Wheel Horse lawn tractor needed some work. I was please to see a huge Toro Wheel Horse sign prominently displayed above the entrance to New Haven Power Equipment, as it is only a few miles from my home. I stopped and asked if they might service my lawn tractor. A bored looking young man in the showroom said he didn't think so but I should ask the manager/owner (?) who was standing nearby. I politely made my inquiry and was cut off in mid sentence. No! We don't work on equipment that we don't sell. The guy was quite the rude dick. I would not patronize such a place. read more

I went in to take a look at some BCS equipment, really happy to be able to see the products in the flesh. When I asked about what else they stock, I was told bluntly "most of what we have on the website." Still positive at this point, I started asking about if they had specific parts in stock. Specifically, a $90 trailer hitch that there were two versions of. I asked if I could see both so I could decide on wich one to buy. I was told "that's not what were here for. You can't come in here and ask to see stuff and not buy it." I thought to myself, he surely can't be serious? I say "no, I'm giving you a hundred dollars here.." to which he says "that's not much." I couldn't quite believe that. This is the worst I've ever been treated by any small business. I spoke to another gentleman from the area and he confirmed, this is normal behavior. Not sure about other reviews as I have had great experiences with Mike and New Haven Power Equipment. I bought a BCS tiller through them a while ago, and recently added a snow blower attachment. Both times everyone has been very helpful and given me advice about maintenance and common issues to look out for. Extremely knowledgable and friendly, and always took time to answer questions and help load and unload and tie down. Great place. read more

I live in Maine. I've been looking for tire chains for my Toro snowblower for awhile. I was delighted to find them on-line and ON-SALE at NHPE. I called to place the order and the employee told me that they were $20 more than the price advertised on their website. Said they hadn't updated their website yet. I asked if they would honor the price as advertised on the web. Nope. They wanted FULL price. I respectfully told them it's probably not good business to charge customers MORE than the advertised price. In fact most folks frown on it. Some would even call it illegal. They call it "bait & switch." Not only did they lose a sale, they lost a customer and any goodwill that they could have generated by dealing with me fairly. I worked in management at L.L. Bean for almost 20 years. A company known for their legendary customer service and for "treating people the way you'd like to be treated." The good/bad part of that experience is this. I recognize good service when I see it but I also recognize poor service. What I received from NHPE was poor service. By the way the call ended abruptly when the employee hung up on me in mid-sentence. I chalked it up to him having a bad day until I read the reviews here. Apparently that's how they roll. Since buying my first mower over 30 years ago from when it was Lee's Repair Service, I have purchased numerous pieces of quality equipment from the owner of New Haven Power Equipment, Lee. Whenever the subject came up, I always recommended this local business, and I know he acquired several new customers because of my praise. This year, when my mower stopped working, I had my son bring it by NHPE. After several days, Lee telephoned in the middle of my work day and told me he thought the mower would need three parts. When I requested a quick email with the estimate for the three parts and labor (not a fixed price), the owner said that it would cost me extra and seemed abrupt over the phone. The conversation ended when he told me to "come pick up your mower." I did. Is this the way you want to be treated? From now on, I will now do business with a sales and service center that is professional. read more

An elderly family friend went to New Haven Power Equipment looking for parts for her Weed Wacker. The gentleman that waited on her asked her where she bought it. She replied that she got it at Home Depot. He told her that she should go there to get her parts because they weren't in the business to fix other people's junk. Really? How rude can you get. Even ruder, I assure you! My father went there asking for a replacement belt for his riding mower. The same gentleman asked him for numbers on the belt. He told him that he couldn't read the numbers on the belt because the belt shredded but he could give him the make and model and serial number from under the seat. The employee informed him that he couldn't help my father if he couldn't provide the information requested. So my father called MTD to get the required information. He called their helpline and was routed to the "nearest dealer to you". Yup, you guessed it! The same arrogant and unfriendly employee! When my Dad again explained the issue, the gentleman told him to "get some glasses and go out and re-read the numbers because you aren't making any sense"! NHPE, shame on you for allowing this man to drive your business! MTD, take them off your list because this is a disgrace and a disservice to you as well! We will never shop there again. We would rather drive to Burlington than deal with such an unhelpful and rude man! read more
