I have been eating at New Heights for many years, since shortly after it opened. I have always enjoyed my dining experiences there. The food is high end but not fussy. The service is focused and friendly. The atmosphere is nice, not overdone. New Heights is now under new ownership and it has renovated the dining room slightly. The menu remains high end but not fussy. We started with an appetizer of fried cauliflower bites and a shared tomato & burrata salad. The breading on the cauliflower was light and airy; no hint of heavy grease. But the flavor was bland overall. I wish we had chosen a different appetizer. The tomato and burrata salad was good. The tomatoes were fresh and tasty. The salad dressing was piquant and applied perfectly. The slight spiciness was a genius addition. We both got the same main course - halibut with jasmine rice and broccolini. The combo of the luxurious halibut with the slightly bitterness of the broccolini was lovely. The rice was too gooey. The dish was dressed with a coconut ginger broth (sauce) that was perfection. All in all, the main course was a winner. Our server was Vlad. He is friendly, helpful and a nice guy but - clearly - not a professional waiter. He was not as familiar with the menu as he should have been. And he got distracted by other diners, resulting in our requests being VERY late or forgotten altogether. Still, after saying that, I liked him and I will not downgrade my review because of Vlad. There are certain things that could be improved at New Heights. But overall there is something really comfortable and pleasant about this restaurant. I like it and I will be back. I will even take friends there in order to show them a good time. Do I recommend New Heights? Yes of course. Just don't expect the restaurant to be 100% perfect in all categories. We had a really good experience at New Heights Restaurant on Valentine's Day. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised that the restaurant was not packed, unlike the long lines and crazy Valentine's Day chaos we expected. My hubby and I have gone out to restaurants on Valentine's Day for many years. Usually, restaurants overbook their reservations, which leads to waiting and frustrated patrons, not at New Heights. We were greeted by a friendly server once we sat. We opted for the Valentine's Day Prix-Fixe menu, which came with two glasses of champagne. For our starters, we got the shrimp bisque (me) and pork belly buns (my hubby), both of which were great! These two items were the stars of the show, perfectly executed and tasty. For our meals, we got steak frites (my hubby) and pan-seared scallops (me). The steak frites were really good and well-flavored. My pan-seared scallops were perfectly cooked, slightly sweet, and really yummy; the sides on the plate were just okay. Lastly, for dessert we got creme brulee and a chocolate dessert, which were just okay. Service was friendly and attentive, and we would definitely check this spot out again. read more

My boyfriend and I checked out this place for quick drinks before a wedding. We strolled up at 4:55 to see they don't open until 5... but they happily welcomed us in to sit at the bar and get our cocktails working. Their happy hour prices were AWESOME - it ended up being $40 total for 4 cocktails. Old fashioned was perfect for my boyfriend, just what he wanted. The margarita the bartender made was refreshing, strong with the perfect hint of sweetness. I wish we tried food there because our neighbors at the bar ordered the Brussels spots and they smelled divine. We had a lovely dinner here last night with great service and attention. The host, the server and attendant were all so friendly and prompt. I did the restaurant week special and started with the beet carpaccio and my husband had the fried mushrooms. The beet salad could've used more dressing and goat cheese and was rather boring. The mushrooms had a lot of batter and were plain but the sauces they came with were incredibly good. For dinner I had the ribeye steak frites, which was very tender and delicious. My husband had the kale and vegetable paella and he said it was good but not great. We ended the evening with the peach cobbler, which I was really looking forward to, but it was quite disappointing... lots of peaches, but not much cobbler and a very little portion of ice cream. The restaurant itself is quite plain, but overall we had a very nice experience and will definitely try it again. It would be nice if they had more vegetarian options for my husband. We tried this restaurant as they participate in the InKind platform. We were very surprised at how much we enjoyed having dinner here. The food is reasonably priced, the service is good, and the space is on the simpler classy end of the spectrum. While I don't think there is a dress code, I'd feel uncomfortable eating upstairs in shorts. Perhaps, this is a possibility in the outdoor patio area or the bar on the ground level. I ordered the Borscht (my first experience with this dish) and Brussels Sprouts. Both were tasty (and healthy)! My companion ordered the roasted chicken, and the review was similarly stellar. The main restaurant dining area is located on the second floor (above Open City). The outdoor patio, entrance, and first floor bar are tucked away to the right of Open City. Six of us were at the Wagyu and Wine dinner. What a lovely evening! we enjoyed each course and learned all about wagyu beef, including the differences between Japanese wagyu and wagyu from other countries. The wines -- all from the Languedoc region -- were uniformly good. Antoine, the wine expert, explained everything clearly. And the food! A prawn appetizer paired with the best of the four wines was especially tasty and unusual, with little cubes of tender sweet potato. The Wagyu beef was unbelievably tender (they explained that it didn't need any sauces because it was so flavorful on its own). One thing I appreciated was that, when I asked if I could get something else instead of the pork belly bao bun, they happily substituted tuna poke tacos -- something I would definitely order again. read more

I decided to spend my 30th birthday in this restaurant because I saw the chef was Bolivian like I am. I was very impressed by how good all of the plates were as well as the atmosphere and service. Everything was 5 stars from start to finish. I ordered the peanut soup as an appetizer and the picanha with cheese rice. The peanut soup was so authentic tasting that it reminded me of home. I would say the same for the picanha and cheese rice as well. My husband ordered the filet medallions which were also amazing. We both ordered caramel apple mules to drink and both would recommend it. We were six people and all of them were pretty happy about their appetizers/entrees and drinks. They were also very veg friendly. For dessert we got the smore's which came with incredible presentation. More for the experience but it was very cool. And the pistachio cake was delicious. I was excited to check out this newly refurbished dc staple for restaurant week! Their $55 three-course special was not as good of a deal as some restaurants, but the food was good! I was especially impressed by the perfectly cooked halibut and the magnificent tuna poke tacos. I also enjoyed the filet medallions--although the price was exorbitant compared to the quantity--and the tempura mushrooms. Our desserts were nice too! One big issue: we were told that they were out of honey cake, despite the fact that almost all the tables around us received that cake. We were really disheartened by that. The service was a little slow and not particularly attentive, so we ended up having to wait quite a while. Other than that, it was good! So happy New Heights is finally open! New owners, newly renovated, and one of maybe two fine dining restaurants in Woodley Park. Service was outstanding since they've only been open for about three weeks. Elena, the owner, was kind and checked on us regularly to make sure we had all we needed. The drinks were excellent; LOVED the toasted marshmallow old fashioned, and my red Zinfandel was served at a perfect temperature (it's always too warm elsewhere). The food, however, was only fine; nothing blew us away, and the menu is not very large. My spouse and I thought the appetizers we ordered, fried oysters and grilled octopus, were far better than our entrees, the hanger steak (ordered medium rare, and it was a little overcooked) and the kale mushroom paella (perhaps it'll make vegetarians happy but it only reminded us that seafood paellas are far superior). Excellent chocolate pot du creme though - it had a thick, almost cake-like texture. Very yum. Because I live in Woodley Park and want all our restaurants to succeed, we will be back, and perhaps the other entrees (or new entrees) will be better. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our evening at New Heights. Mike was our server and was lovely. The ambiance is very sophisticated and low key; it was a nice, intimate place for a date. The decor is understated, and an added touch was that the entire place was decorated for Easter -- so cute! We got the Purple Rain cocktail to start, and liked it so much that we each got our own! We'd originally planned to split one. The bread they bring to the table is soft and crunchy, and was absolutely delicious. We then tried the fondue, which was both theatrical in presentation and delicious in flavor! For our entrees, my husband ordered the filet mignon medallions and I got the crab cakes -- both of us left stuffed and satisfied! For dessert I tried the creme brûlée which was good, and my husband got the chocolate layer cake. The least impressive part of the meal was the chocolate layer cake, and it was still 3/4 devoured. A top-notch experience from start to finish, including service, ambiance, and food! Out of over 25 Yelp restaurant reviews I've done in DC, it's the only one which deserves every bit of the five-star review I gave it based on the type of restaurant it bills itself to be. In particular, the service was outstanding and one of the top service levels I've ever received anywhere. My friend and I had to change our reservation last-minute from 6 to 7:45, and New Heights was able to do it quickly, even sending me an updated Open Table reminder. Upon our arrival, one of the three co-owners greeted us and checked our coats. We were seated close to on time and had a delightful experience with our server, who was funny, attentive without being intrusive, and gave us fantastic service with dishes spaced appropriately. The ambiance is great-it's upscale without feeling snooty, white tablecloths, tasteful lighting, and some decorations reflecting the owners' heritages. My friend and I split two appetizers: the cheesy onion fondue and the tuna poke tacos, and the creole fettucine without shrimp. The cheesy onion fondue was beyond outstanding. I've eaten at over 50 restaurants in DC so far this year and this is one of the three best dishes I've had. The fontina was delicious and creamy with the right amount of umami and salt. The caramelized onions provided a fantastic textural contrast and some sweetness, with the lemon providing a touch of acid. The garlic ciabatta was perfectly toasted and provided the right base and crunch for the rest of the dish. Additionally, at $12 this dish was the appropriate size for the cost. The tuna poke tacos were delicious with crispy wontons, perfectly cooked tuna, avocado mash and sesame oil all perfectly complementing one another. I would avoid adding the wasabi, as even a small amount completely overwhelms the flavor. However, this appetizer was tiny and at least $3 overpriced for its portion size, even accounting for ingredient expense. The creole fettucine without shrimp was a slightly elevated fettucine, with the creole sauce providing a mild and delicious kick to what otherwise was a good but nothing out of the ordinary fettucine. We split the pumpkin cheesecake for dessert which was fine but in retrospect we would have ordered the regular cheesecake. We also found we were full after splitting the three dishes listed above. I look forward to going back to New Heights, having the fondue again, and trying other amazing dishes! read more

I would give them a 0 star if I could...... Online it was advertised they were opened til 10pm. We arrived at 9:01 and the place was vacant. Went downstairs to the bar to ask the bartender where the host was considering we waited at the host stand for 5 minutes. While at the bar I saw the bartender in the doorway to the bar and the back room he was using a bottle opened to get the dirt out from under HIS FINGERNAILS!!! Yes you heard that right.... And if you didn't, reread it!! Once I called over to him in disbelief he frantically placed the bottle opener under the bar counter and proceeded to tell me that they closed at 9 even though it was advertised for a 10pm close. During this whole conversation the bartender didn't make eye contact once and had his hand covering his mouth when he talked to me. I have to say that I was amazed by all the flavors I experienced during my visit at new heights. I have heard great things about it and I can easily say now that New heights it's my favorite restaurant in DC at the moment. Place looked busy but service was on point, our server helped us pick our starters and I have to say that the Tuna tacos were on point! You can tell they were super fresh and seasoned with extreme detail, the presentation was very modern and very well thought off. The peanut soup was addictive and left you wanting more! And the Ceviche was delightful with just enough acidity to complement the dish without overpowering your taste buds. The entrees also were amazing with not only great presentation but with a solid combinations of flavors. My two daughters and my wife were impressed by the tsunami of flavors we experienced during our dinner and the solid service we received. My family and I stopped into New Heights and had an outstanding meal from start to finish. Each dish was excellent, service was outstanding, and we found the restaurant to be elegant and modern. Be it for a special occasion or a terrific casual meal, I'd highly recommend New Heights. Between our party, we tried a variety of dishes. For starters we enjoyed the Sopa de Mani, pork belly buns, and borscht. The Sopa de mani was really standout: a creamy peanut broth rich with fine fideos and shredded chicken. For our entrees, we ordered the roast chicken, halibut, vegetable paella, shrimp fettuccini, and moulles frites. Of those, the vegetable paella was really special, with well-cooked rice and a mix of mushrooms and crispy kale. For dessert we tried the honey cake, an almond cale, and the pistachio ricotta cake. Each was rich and unique, but being pistachio lovers the pistachio ricotta was certainly our favorite. New Heights is a unique restaurant as focused on food as on people. Chatting with our waitress (outstanding!) we learned that the restaurant was working to provide Ukrainian refuges with opportunities and Ukrainian art was for sale on the walls. From our visit, it felt that New Heights aims to bring people together through food, providing a space for conversation and community.
