The shop is constantly busy with cars ranging from Vintage/old school all the way to exotics. No job is too big or too small. They retain sharp technicians whom clearly understand the issues at hand. Good work takes time, they always recommend getting OEM parts whether its through the shop or if you pick it up yourself. New to the neighborhood, found this place on Yelp. Called on one Saturday morning to ask if we can stop by later today for inspection, they said yes. When we arrived they asked us to park the car on the street and said may take about 1-2 hours. So we left and waited for two and half hours in the coffee shop, when we came back, we were told they are too busy, (they don't even know where our car was), ask us to move the car to the store front, maybe can be done in another hour, but not guaranteed. They don't tell you what they charge for inspecting your car and then tell you an outrageous price to fix your car when it would cost 30 to 40% less elsewhere. I refuse to fix my car here and they tried to charge me $100 for "taking a look" of my car. They never told me about this fee before I dropped off my car. When I refused they threw my car key at me and wouldn't tell me where it was parked. Chinese family owned repair shop for two generations. The son, Roger is now in charge of all operations, and his mother is occasionally there to help him out. Roger is very courteous and professional. (His mechanics are more brusque) His mechanics do the job, and no problems to date.(Roger mostly supervises) Roger is straight forward and does not try to coerce you to fix more of your car. If there are any problems - he'll recommend and ask you first. They do inspections, and auto body.(I've heard many say they do a good job with auto body) They do not have a wheel alignment machine and do not install tires(no tire machine) However, they are very good at engine & tranny swaps, and replacements. I always see a different car's engine being replaced.(mostly American cars lol) His shop gets really busy at times, especially the weekend. Many chinese brooklynites rely on New Hope. I'm a car enthusiast and normally do all the work on my cars myself. How else is someone able to keep up to 8 cars (that's the most I've owned at any one time) running in good shape in New York without going homeless and sleeping in one of those said cars? Well, times have changed, having moved into a closet (I mean, apartment) in Manhattan-- which means no parking, no garage space to work on cars, and having to sell all my cars but one for the occasional weekend trip or road trip and driving/track/autocross events... And thus, my need to find a mechanic / shop to do work on my car for things that are beyond simple stuff that I can do on the street or in my sister's/friend's driveways. The family that owns/operates New Hope Auto is a relative of one of my friends, and he told me to go here a few years ago when I said I needed a shop to inspect and recharge the A/C in my 1992 Toyota Celica. That's a job I can't/won't do myself. Shop is very efficient and they are straight-forward. Most times when they are not overloaded, they'll take your car and work on it and it'll be ready shortly. Roger is very communicative, explains everything, never pressures you, always leaves the decision up to you. If they discover something part-way in the repair, he'll always call you, explain it, make a suggestion and give you what your options are, then ask you how to proceed. A mechanic/shop owner with communication skills is truly an asset and that alone deserves 5 stars... I normally bring in any major parts myself only because I like to know exactly what goes in my car, and like I said, I'm used to working on my cars myself, ordering exactly the parts I want (aftermarket/performance or OEM). And they are perfectly cool with that. One time, the ECU in my car had fried. They asked me what I want to do. I said, let me try to see if I can find a used one, knowing a new one would cost $1500+. It took a week and a half, but I found a used ECU (via the various car forums and web that I searched), had it shipped to me, and I brought it there. They installed it and car was back on the road. Annual NY inspections are fast and painless. If you're an auto enthusiast, this is the shop you want to bring your car to. Roger is also into cars and understand nuts like us, and know that cars are not appliances to us but something we enjoy and greatly care for. Only downside is that they don't have an alignment machine or tire chaning/balancing machine, so they can't do those for you. (They can rotate wheels/tires since that only involves removing lug nuts, moving wheels around, and tightening lug nuts-- hell, I can do that in 20 minutes in a driveway myself...). They recently (maybe a year or two ago?) got a paint booth, so they can do bodywork / paint now. Since I do race my cars, and alignment is important to me, I get my alignment done elsewhere at a race/tuner shop (chain shops don't do "custom"/race alignments like aggressive negative camber or toe in/out which I need-- if that was all jibberish to you, then you'll be fine at a regular shop/chain for your alignments lol). Otherwise, this is the place I go to, even though I live in Manhattan, my car is parked in Queens, and their shop is in Brooklyn, I make that trip out here, even in bad traffic (Brooklyn Bridge to BQE ugh), cos a great mechanic/shop is one in a million, especially in NYC... read more

I had already taken my truck to another place and had no luck so I came here based on the reviews and the weekend hours. I called in and they said I could walk in no problem. I dropped the truck off and after a couple hours I finally had a truck with an inspection sticker! I could get into the technical details of what they did but all I really care about now is that my light is off and I wont be getting any more inspection tickets.
