You know, I was originally going to give this place a 3 but after finishing i realized it was not bad at all. Since Yelp does not allow half stars, this was closer to a 4. This is one of 3 Chinese take/ dine in places in the town of Catskills. We wanted a sit down but this one had two tables while the other had one so this place WON out. Food was surprisingly good. I ordered beef with snow peas and a cup of wonton. Wonton though not the best was on par with other places sans veggies...However it had a childhood taste that I remembered from Washington Heights, that put a smile on my face. My dish was good and shockingly was good sized for $7...Yes, for $7 for that plate, I walked away happy. Everyone seemed to like their dishes and all of us finished them...Does this indicate the food is top tier? NO but for what it is - mostly take out, it gets kudos. I would order take out from here. Service was nice, like they cared that we enjoyed our dine in experience. I appreciated that. Ambiance is typical Chinese take out train wreck but this place at least put two tables and chairs. I liked that the owner again tried to make the dine in experience better so for that, the train wreck score was dashed away. In the end, we agreed this was a place that food could be ordered for take out. I would easily order from here again...I wished though that they had a proper dining area. read more

This is really a 3.5 Stopped in for a quick lunch. There are only 2 tables with 4 chairs each - since I'm sure most people list order take out. The service was nice and friendly and the portions for the lunch specials were generous. The food tasted fresh and good. The eggroll was fried well without being greasy and contained cabbage with bits of pork. The General Tso's was also fried well, had a coating that wasn't too thick, and came with a good sauce. It could have been a bit spicier for my taste but it was very good. The fried rice came with bits of pork and onion and had a nice flavor. I'd come back if I was in the area and needed a quick Chinese lunch. read more

We've been going to New Long River for almost 20 years, and found they're the best around. Their food, and portions can't be beat. Always very consistent. Best Won Ton Soup, Spare Ribs, Chicken Wings, and Entrees. Well worth driving from Saugerties. Extremely nice owners, as well. read more

Food is ok. It has changed dramatically recently, possibly due to new ownership. Check your orders on before leaving to ensure you receive everything you ordered, and that you receive the correct meals. There is no longer a buffet available, so Yelp needs to update that. While I've never had the take out, the buffet is nice to have close by! Just about everything here is 3-stars. The decor, the atmosphere, the food, (actually the staff is 5-stars!) pretty much everything! And while it's not the best American style Chinese takeout, the verity of the buffet is great and all of the food is fresh and hot. The verity isn't huge: there's only one large buffet table and two side tables (one with desert), but it's more than enough for a good quick dinner! If you're really hungry for some Chinese and don't know what you want or you don't want to spend too much than this is the place for you! read more

For a take out place, their food is quite good. The fried rice is MEGA YELLOW but I don't care. They have a buffet area as well yet all my visits (4) have been take out. With all Chinese places where I'm pretty much a new customer, I go ALL over the menu. A little bit of this and that. The wonton soup is good. The egg rolls are NOT overcooked like what most take out places give you. I am pretty confident in New Long River keeping me on and spending money there. What I really like here is that when you order a pint off the menu, they give you the food in the plastic take out plates into of the traditional white carton. This is very, very cool! read more

My husband loves Chinese buffets, otherwise I'd never go, but I've learned to pick my battles! So that said, New Long River Chinese Buffet was really good... all the food was very fresh. When we first walked in and walked around the buffet before sitting down, I noticed there wasn't a lot of food piled in the serving trays. The serving woman/hostess said 'don't worry, we'll be bring out more very soon.' And they did... I think this is why it tasted so good... they don't leave it piled up steaming on the buffet table, but make it fresh and bring it out. The broccoli was still delicately crunchy, not soggy, which is one way I judge the freshness. All in all, the variety was excellent and tasted good. I'd go back! read more

Although not the worst Chinese takeout, this place ranks pretty close to it, and certainly for the locale it's in. The thing I've always found to be the most unpalatable about Long River is that the owner flatly refuses to dump her old cooking oil until it practically turns to tar, or is ordered to by the Health Department. As a result, all the fried items here are not only sopping with thick, unpleasant-tasting oil, but they maintain a burnt flavor from the hundreds (if not thousands) of items that were cooked in it previously. On more than one occasion, I have sufferad a serious allergic reaction after eating food from Long River, only to find out that she tosses EVERYTHING together into that one cauldron of black oil, whether it be shellfish, pork, vegetable, whatever. I believe there are laws pertaining to that sort of thing, but these jerks apparently never heard of them or simply dont give a shit. Once, my Dad got food poisoning after eating the crap from here, and had to see a doctor. When I've brought these incidents to her attention, she always feigns stupidity and claims to not know anything. Insult upon injury! When you are in Catskill and in need of safe, edible Cinese food, simply stroll across the road to Great Wall instead for some good, solid Chinese food served with a smile, and forget that Long River even exists, as I've done long ago. Why anyone would continue to go to this slop-house is a mystery, when there is a better, safer, and more delicious alternative just steps away. read more

Went here tonight with my wife for the buffet, and found both the shrimp and the General Tsao's chicken to have a strange, 'off' kind of taste. Many of the items here always seem questionable, and we've often felt somewhat sick after eating here, but after tonight, this was the final straw: I developed severe stomach cramps, and even vomited a few times. Undoubtedly, absolutely the worst, most disgusting Chinese Buffet food I have ever eaten. Loaded with salt. Out of soup and they didn't replenish until I was ready to leave; good thing because the soup was equally bad. One oriental girl lazily sits there rather than checking food items that need to be replaced. If you have no sense of good taste, like those morons who have highly rated this dump, have at it. The restaurant runs like a buffet place---food is supposed to be sitting around for hours---the wonton noodles were ao cold and hard, I just left them. BTW, DON'T TRUST YELP FOR RECOMMENDATIONS. My son loves Chinese buffets and this is a little tiny hole in the wall. We didn't even know it was here! It seems to be run by a nice family who knows some of their customers. Their children I believe go to the local schools. The Resturant Buffett is what we came for and it was great. Small but the food was good. They have the basics like chicken and broccoli, fried rice, ribs, sweet and sour chicken. The Resturant was very small but it was clean even in the bathroom. It's a bit out of my way ( I live about 40 mins away) but next time I'm over in the area we would definitely come back. It was $10 for an adult and $6 for my 10 year old!!! Well worth it. read more

The food was good, clean, but in humid and hot days, they don't use the air conditioner. Asked to put the air conditioner on, they said it was. Not just myself was complaining, other customers as well, some customers simply walked out. You could not enjoy your meal with sweat rolling down your face and arms, very uncomfortable. read more

Visiting Catskill for the weekend from Long Island (where we've been to several Chinese buffets) we found our way to this small Chinese buffet on a saturday night. It had the typical Chinese buffet fare and everything was very fresh as the cook prepares the food in portions that would serve about 6 people at a time. None of the food lingered long on the steam table. The night we went, there were many families there with children, happily eating as the dinner price was very, very reasonable. All the children were well behaved and busy with the variety of food on their plates. The cold buffet table had an assortment of sushi, prepared in small amounts as well as seasonal fruit, pudding, jello and other cold dishes. The fried dumplings were among the largest and plumpest I've had at a Chinese buffet and hand made. Though it's standard fare, the fried rice on the buffet was not the usual brown from soy sauce, but a very light color with bits of fresh pork, eggs, scallions and not oily. The ice cream freezer had 8 different self-serve tubs of ice cream There were many servers to help us and to clear the tables. We have decided that when we find ourselves in the area, we would definately visit this restaurant again. read more

Last time I ever give this place another chance to redeam itself. First off, the door is wide open in 90 degree weather and the patrons are eating with flies all over. The peppered steak was NOT beef, whatever it was it was raw. The food looked disgusting. The floors were filthy. I had ice cream and left it was so bad. Ordered take out from here. Sad to say the egg drop soup was really watered down, and my boyfriend found a shell in it. The steamed dumplings had way to much dough on them. I found the fried rice lacked a little flavor but I enjoyed my chicken and broccoli. read more
