Heard all the hype about the new "New Luck Toy" so we waited until now because of the wait. It's a bit divey in terms of aesthetics. There is a skeeball game and a pinball table. Interior walls are painted black. They serve the food on paper plates but I believe that it's for convenience for cleanup. No dishes to wash as well. You get over the looks of the place once you take a bite of their food. Although a little salty, the overall flavor is great. We ordered the hot and sour soup, their version of general tso's, and salt & pepper shrimp. All were very good. For drinks we got a the lucky colada and a Kentucky bourbon lemonade. This was the second time we have been here the first time was during the week and it was dead but we enjoyed it and the food was good. We came on a weekend night and it was not the same experience. We walked in to be told get a ticket and someone will find you. We waited for 20 minutes in the front karaoke room and no one seemed to be getting called. I then decided to get a drink at the bar and it was packed with twenty somethings who were loud and obnoxious. There was only one bartender and he was in no hurry to get drinks, just moving along at leisurely pace. At this point we left, it did not seem like there was anyone running the place and it was just on auto pilot. read more

Best atmosphere! Great combination of dark divey bar feel with cleanliness and amazing food. The slushie drinks are delicious and potent. The vibe in the place is hard to beat. Usually great music and friendly staffers. The tiki cocktaoil glasses are an added bonus..if you havent given it a go yet get after it! First off this divey joint will soon be overrun with customers. The food is legit! I ordered the dumplings, Mongolian beef, and the fried rice with cracklins. First the dumplings were hot and tasty with a shallow pool of spicy chili oil and fried garlic on top (I wouldn't mind see this expressed in additional ways). The Mongolian Beef in gravy with pickled cucumber slices was rather tasty and even though the beef was slightly on the chewy side for me it was in no way close to shoe leather and that gravy gave it that "American Chinese" flavor with a heavy dose of Murica. The fried rice with cracklins was also a welcome dish with bean sprouts tossed in to give additional crunch with a side of freshness. Front of the house needs to iron some things out (I know it was the opening day) but the kitchen is solid. Will be a welcome addition to California Avenue. read more

Second visit, and returned only because friends wanted to try it and talked me into it. I really want to like this place. I live so close, it would be great to have a good Asian food place that is a go-to. But I think it has an identity problem. Is it a bar or is it a restaurant? It doesn't seem like it can handle being both. The food was ok....walnut prawns were awesome, some noodle thing my friends ordered was awful and they sent it back, the egg rolls were not good. Much of the menu has items that include spice heat. Trying to avoid super-hot entrees, I also ordered the fried rice. Spicy. And I'm Mexican, so I'm ok with spicy and heat. No need to have that in fried rice. In my humble opinion which I'm sure no one really cares about, this place would be better suited offering more bites and small plates, than to try to be a full restaurant. Not enough tables for dining. Would be better to have more bistro tables and be able to seat more guests, than have a lot of people stand around hoping to snag a booth that opens up. We arrived, and there was standing room only in the back. Luckily for me, the couple at the booth where I was standing offered their booth, as they were finishing up. Great! I'm also sure I pissed off some that were standing around for a while, waiting for a table. Drinks: wanted a Tsingtao beer....out. One in our party ordered red wine. Fine. Wanted a second red wine...out of red wine. And white wine. WTF? GET IT TOGETHER! Could be a good thing...just get rid of the aspects of your operation that aren't working. People want this to work, but you're pissing people off, including me. And please.....lower the volume of the damn speakers. Unless you're trying to turn tables faster. Ps. Having EVERYTHING served in disposable containers and plastic ware isn't cool either. It's expected at the Panda Express chain, but this isn't being touted as a fast food joint! It's not a Chinese restaurant with a bar. It's a bar that serves Chinese food. For those who remember the old New Luck Toy (at the risk of dating myself), the new incarnation is cleaner, with better food, and more skilled bar tenders. I look forward to having the spring rolls and hot & sour soup again. And there are many more items on the menu I would like to try. The front "dining room" seems more like an overflow area from the bar, for the late-comers who couldn't get to the back where the action is. read more

The food is good. The no take out gimic is absolutely stupid. They serve everything in to go containers anyway so taking to go orders would increase revenue by quite a bit. I like the idea of this place but, having been twice now it seems very disjointed. The drinks all sound good but, the few I've ordered have been very sour and muddled. There are no predominant flavors. The green beans were good and the soft serve was okay. There are only 2 vegetarian options on the menu. So I loved loved the food, but my husband did not like any of it. I got their tofu dish and general tsos chicken thighs. I can def say the food sat heavily, but the prices were great and portions large. The atmosphere of this place is incredible, I feel like I'm not even in west Seattle when entering New Luck Toy. It's def a great spot to go to at the end of the night out for some grub, drinks and to end in an atmosphere that's a high note. I think people just like to find anything to complain about, cause this place alia not as bad as some of the reviews. As far as food, uuhh this place has some of the best Chinese, it's all fresh, egg rolls are made in house which is hard to find these days, if you like heat, they definitely spice it up, and the portions are nice. First, to avoid disappointment, this is not a Chinese restaurant. It is a bar that has some Chinese food, which quite frankly, isn't really good, the food is okay. The drinks were good, but expensive. The space is very nice, they have done a good job remodeling it. I think I would go back just to hang out if there was a happy hour with some drink specials and maybe potstickers or other Asian appetizers, until then I think I've had the experience and there isn't much incentive to have it again. read more

I have never had such disgusting food in my 69 years! The hot and sour soup tasted like there were chemicals in it. Spit out my first spoonful! The fried rice was just so-so and the Mongolian beef with broccoli rabe was so bad we couldn't eat it. When you bit into the stem of the broccoli a stream of disgusting liquid was released, thought I would vomit. Tasted like dirty dish water. The honey pecan shrimp was less than mediocre. I would NEVER order take out from there again and the prices were too High for that garbage. We had 3 entrees and soup for $52, most of which we couldn't eat and the portion size was very small. We ate at Happy Garden had 4 entrees and soup for $48 with a ton of leftovers. New Luck Toy deserves NO stars! read more

The actual restaurant atmosphere & food was good & I would've given it a 4 star rating, if the service from the bartender, Brenden, hadn't been so egregiously horrible & incredibly rude. It was our very first time visiting this restaurant. Brendon's service to us was so bad, that it was inexcusable. We sat at the bar. & Brendon ignored us the entire time. He never checked on us or even looked at us, once. We had to wave him down to order a drink. Then we had to literally wait another 30 minutes and wave him down again to get some food. Instead, he was solely focused on chatting up a couple of his male patrons. We had been forced to sit in the cramped corner of the bar, trying to eat our food, & were patiently waiting for some people to leave at the other side of the bar so that we could have room to eat. When I got up and moved our food over to a newly opened spot at the bar, Brendon rudely told me that those seats were saved and he picked my food up and literally threw it back over into the cramped corner where we were previously sitting. The "saved" seats sat empty for 25 more minutes, when his 3 male friends came in and sat in the "saved" seats.... even though we had been waiting for almost 2 hours. Brendon continued to ignore us, and never once came back to ask us if we needed anything else. We had to wave him down again to get our check. He chatted up the 3 guys, for the next 30 min, until we left. We left completely disappointed in this place. It's one thing to take care of your regular patrons (& personal friends), but treating newcomers the way that we were treated is a complete dealbreaker. We will never go back. read more

First time going to this place. The food is sooo amazing and flavorful and came out in about 10 minutes. The service is great. Only downfall is it's pretty loud, but that's to be expected with a busy bar/restaurant. We ordered the General Oh Tso Good fried chicken, Mongolian beef with broccoli, the spare ribs, dry fried long beans, and the honey pecan prawns. Everything was so tasty but the prawns were especially good. Highly recommend them! There was only three of us... we definitely ordered too much food but the serving sizes are really great for the price. I also recommend the frozen drinks from the bar- super tasty. read more

I've visited New Luck Toy twice. My first experience was actually quite pleasant; the food was decent, the drinks were delicious and we were able to get into the karaoke room to have our own singing party. The second time we visited was last night. At first everything seemed fine and we were able to get a couple of tables in the bar. The food service was a little slow, probably because it was fairly late and we were back in the corner. We wanted to get into the karaoke room, but it was full to capacity so we settled for playing music on the jukebox instead. My cousin played a couple of T-Swift songs and other pop songs that everyone was singing and dancing to; however, when she played a country song, the bartender immediately turned it off and said "NO COUNTRY!" Ok, well first of all, he was incredibly rude about the entire situation. If you don't want people to play country or any other music that you deem unworthy, don't have it on the jukebox and available for people to select. We thought the bartender was joking, so my cousin decided to play another country song, to which the bartender again turned off. We were pretty upset at this point. My cousin's boyfriend was the most upset and asked the bartender why he kept turning the songs off? The bartender yelled that "he has the right not to serve anyone he pleases and that he will call the cops if we don't leave." Obviously the whole situation escalated rather quickly, especially on the part of the bartender. He didn't need to be so abrasive and condescending, holding over our heads the fact that he has the right to not serve us and kick us out. I've never been to an establishment that treated their customers in this manner. My brother owns two successful bars and would certainly never treat or allow his bartenders to treat his customers like the bartender treated us last night. New Luck Toy should definitely reconsider who they are hiring to represent their business. West Seattle is a friendly community, not an elitist, shallow district riddled with bartenders with large egos on power trips. Rest assured, we will not be going to this place again and will certainly let our friends know about our experience. read more

Not a great choice for my wife and me. The cocktails were terrible (I ordered a Mai Tai and I could not even drink it, and my wife's Hurricane was also not very good.) The food was okay but not spectacular compared to a real decent Chinese restaurant. The decor is very dark and the sound is extremely loud, which is perfect if you do not want to hear anything from your spouse or guest. We definitely would never go there again. However, we always love Mark Fuller's other restaurant, Ma Ono, in West Seattle, and we will continue to go there regularly. read more

Small menu but all the food so far is delicious--The barbeque pork is a must! The bar staff is friendly and talkative, but easily distracted, or slow to get back around to you. I've been twice in two weeks and plan many more trips back. The karaoke room looks fun for a small group but will fill up quick if this place is as busy on the weekends as it is on weekdays. This is a nice little tribute to the former older, larger New Luck Toy that was part of West Seattle's history. This place is like no other! We went on a Saturday early evening, 4:30 on my husband's suggestion since he read it fills up fast. The awesome neon out front pulls you in and the decor is so much fun! Get a seat at the bar and order thier frosty Singapore Sling with Metaxa, delish! The egg rolls, fried rice, general Tso chicken and dumplings....oh my. Amazing dishes! Generous portions too for the prices, I got 4 things (1 noodle, 2 small dishes and a side) and it was easily enough for 2. The cumin lamb and the bok choy were my favorites. The service was great too, our waitress saw that we didn't like a dish, tried it and said it was missing salt, then took it off our bill without asking. They are very busy and don't do take out. We were there for only a bit though before spots opened at the bar. We were a party of 2 and went on a Tuesday. I'd expect a long wait on weekends, and not much room for groups. read more
