I came in for surgery and at first the staff was nice at check-in until I got to the back. The nursing staff was horrible. After they placed the IVs in me I started getting a burning sensation my hands cramped and my feet cramped so bad that you couldn't pry them open my toes were curled back and I started crying I almost threw up. I said Mom I don't know if I can do this and they go we don't have to do this is an eletive surgery if you don't want to you can go home, it wouldn't be like this if you would just stop and calm down big bresths. Then the doctor came in and says what's going on she goes oh I didn't see her hands clamped! Yes she did cuz I showed her several times saying it hurt! Dr Patton tells her something and so they gave me a shot and it finally went away. Afterwards they I had a knot where the IV was the size of a golf ball and no one called me in pain meds so they cut need open and sent me on my way! It was the worst experience I've had. I was scared to have it done anyway and they made it worse and unlike any other surgery I've ever had it was horrible!

But at NM Surgery Center, I didn't get that feeling.

Every department I have dealt with at this facility has been very poor. From trying to make an…read moreappointment(put your life on hold for an hour), to the initial exam by Dr. Chapman that was so aggressive that left me in pain on my good knee for 3 days to just now getting off the phone with them when they sent me a collection demand letter and then a week later sent me a statement for the actual services received... of course the representative was rude. DON'T GO HERE. My doctor was Chapman, when he was comparing my good knee to my bad knee he kept popping pulling and digging his fingers under my knee saying he was trying to find my ACL. It was so intense that he left my good knee bruised for three days and my bad knee now had this large bulge under it that was much more painful than before. I saw another doctor at Mayo which is where I am going now and his evaluation was delicate compared to Dr. Chapman. MRI was a pain to deal with because they had a young inexperienced tech who wrote things in her chart that I never said just because I have a small needle in me. People get MRI's all the time with metal in them and this was tiny. I had to make at least 20 more calls to departments with numerous unreturned calls to finally get the MRI. My doctors assistant at one point cancelled my appointment as I was on my way there so I could not answer my phone while driving and then I never got her to return my calls. Made three calls that week to reschedule and still never received a call back. That's when I finally called Mayo and I feel like it was a call from God. I had people approach me in the store without even knowing me to say not to go to New Mexico Orthopaedics and now I understand why. Scheduling, billing, the doctor, MRI, medical records, all of the departments were challenging, even compared to other local large medical facilities like The New Mexico Cancer Center or the hospital. I cannot even imagine the nightmare of going through with a surgery with them. Save your sanity. Go somewhere else. There are other options!

However, she came in with a box, pulled out a thin "sleeve" said it could go right over my sock, slipped it on and pulled 3 Velcro straps over my foot, handed me the box and left. The doctor didn't mention whether i should not bear any weight on it or not. When I got home I found 2 more straps in the box that are part of a 3 part brace. I scanned the QRS code and watched a 1 inch video with no audio that I could barely see. I still do not know if I'm applying the 3 parts correctly. I went for the MRI today, a week later and was not allowed to get seen because I have a service animal for a previous spinal injury. I have had 3 MRI's, 2CT scans and abdominal surgery at the Mayo Clinic- all accompanied with my service dog who is registered with the Department of Transportation and flys every where I go- twice a year- without a single complain. This company functions like a factory. You are not a person to anyone who works here. You are a pay check on their very rude and very impersonal conveyor belt.

No apologies when he finally showed up. The whole visit seemed to be his excuse to get his day back on schedule. He took NO time to examine my knee. He literally said, let's just get to the end, and filled out the electronic evaluation while complaining that nobody should ever vote for President Obama and obamacare as it forces him to do paperwork now?!? plus his 6 best friends in the business have left (because of paperwork?!?). I had to stop him and ask him to feel the swelling in my knee and tell me what happened to it. His response "ah, its probably little pieces of cartilage that broke off and are healing; and don't take ibuprofen to attack swelling (even though my primary care had me doing it)" why no ibuprofen? he never bothered with that detail! As he was quite literally RUNNING out of the examining room (why?!), he did say he had some injectable "stuff" that I could get from him for an extra cost. Of course, he didn't actually give me any information as to what this injectable stuff was, what it would do for my current condition and/or if it were for future protection of the knee. STAY AWAY FROM THIS NUT JOB!

Today, I am back to skiing, racing motorcycles and doing just about everything else I did before my knees were injured. The issue is that the procedure was performed early in the year on Jan 8th, meaning I was responsible for the $280 medicare deductible (which was taken from my bank and paid directly to NM Ortho). Anyway, they claim that I owe $280 . . . even though I had the bank record that stated the amount in question was paid and a statement from medicare stating that it was paid to directly to NM Ortho . . . however, for some reason, it had been credited to a Dr McGee (?) who, to my knowledge, had nothing to do with the surgery. In any event, they still said that I owe the $280, so we faxed up all the documentation that should have proven that we had fulfilled our financial obligation to NM Ortho. Two weeks ago we received a phone call asking me about the $280 once again. The medical staff was absolutely terrific however dealing with the billing department is a highly frustrating and an unnecessary headache.
