This salon is cheap and efficient. They charge based on length. Since my hair passes my shoulder, it was $45 for wash, cut, blowout. I walked in at 2pm on Friday and was out within 45 mins. I got 2 inches cut off and basic layers. This is a great option if you are in a hurry. They only take cash which is the only drawback. read more

WORST HAIRCUT EVER, PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAKE DO NOT GO. The cut is completely uneven, not blended at all, and dirty scissors were used. The person cutting my hair took 2 minutes MAXIMUM, only used scissors with a comb side, and just grabbed pieces of my hair and chopped it off. I am now having to pay someone else over $200 to fix it because of how horribly it was cut. This is genuinely the worst experience and hair cut I have ever had at a salon. I was due for a haircut, as my last cut was 2 years ago. Based on a recommendation, I asked for Michael, but he had just sat another customer down so I waited 40 minutes. The hair wash was nice, with some complimentary massages. I showed him the type of cut I wanted, and we discussed specifics before he started to blow dry my hair and then cut my hair. There was some unevenness at the back, but overall, I enjoyed my cut. I paid $28 since I have long-ish hair, but I think it depends on the length of your hair. Looks like they are good with coloring too-- since I had 40 minutes to kill, I saw the end results of a really nice royal purple. read more

I had a decent experience during my first visit, with a haircut and blowout. However, my second visit was a completely different story. I went to Michelle both times. This time, I brought a photo and clearly explained that I only wanted a touch-up on my face-framing layers and a small trim to maintain the length. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. Half my hair is gone. I'm so disappointed and frustrated. Now I have to go through the process of growing my hair back out. My hair was all the way down my back and barely reached halfway now. If you're going in just for a wash and blowout, might be fine. But if you're considering a haircut, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. I also watched a male stylist with blonde hair botch another client's hair for nearly an hour. Was a hard watch the after looked so bad but he covered it with curling the ends. read more

First, I called ahead to ask if they accepted walk in customers and their hours of operation. On the day of the haircut, I asked if they actually opened at 9AM considering that it seemed early for a salon to open at, and they actually confirmed they were-props to Ocean Hairstyles Design Center for being so hardworking and opening on time! I came in to get a layered haircut and showed the barber the look I was going for, however I think there was some miscommunication on the process. A cut is $23 and a cut with wash is $26, however I decided to go with the former because I saw that getting a wash would just be done in the sink, instead of the barber doing it for you. I appreciate the time and care placed into cutting my hair because it took a good amount of time for it to be completed and the barber used two different types of scissors-my usual hairstylist uses one scissor! When the haircut was done and the barber showed me the completed look, I questioned if my hair was layered, however a female stylist stepped in and notified me that my hair would've looked more layered if I had washed it first before the cut. Oddly enough, I've always washed my hair after a haircut so I'll keep this in mind the next time I get layers done here. read more

I had a great haircut and style done here and would definitely recommend for that. However, I was disappointed with the coloring service provided to me. When I expressed concern about how it turned out, I was told it looked fine and that's how it was supposed to be. My roots were lighter than the rest of my hair even though I asked for an all over color. It looks terrible. They were concerned about payment over my satisfaction and I'm very disappointed. When I called to speak with the manager, they said there wasn't one in and when I asked when they'd be in, they hung up and would not answer when I tried calling back. Poor customer service. I got my hair cleaned, which was nice and relaxing even though it was pretty quick, a short backrub which was great and unexpected, and my stylist listened to me and did a great job. I was in the area and on a whim I decided to get a wash and haircut. It is amazing for how much care they take for a wash and haircut for $25! It was a rainy day but I was the only other customer there. Terry did an amazing job with my front layers and trimming my spilt ends. The approach was different than most salons I have been too. The split ends were cut with wet hair but the layers were cut after my hair was blow dried. I asked Terry to flip the layers and then he sprayed it with water before flipping it with the blow dryer. Context: My hair is uncolored, untreated, long and straight. No white hair, no wavy-ness, and not dry. I have oily scalp so I wash my hair everyday but I feel like the oily scalp keeps my hair healthy and protected from elements. That said, my hair is VERY easy to manage. I just needed to trim the split ends and my hair was feeling heavy so I needed a cut to make it lighter. Because I have such easy to manager hair, paying more than one $ for a hair cut feels like I'm throwing cash away. So I just needed a no frills spot that can give me a decent layered cut. I also prefer asians cutting my hair because I feel like they HAVE to "get" how my hair works. The wrong snip can create a weird dent if I airdry my hair. The worse thing that can happen is if the cut is wrong and my ends flip outwards naturally on their own (they should flip inwards or just be straight) or clear choppiness. I asked Terry for 3 inches off and he kept to it. The back and front of my hair looks just as I asked for - layers. No choppiness - shits even on both sides. $25 for wash, cut, and dry. No brainer. I'll probably come back to Terry - sweet gentle guy. Other observation: In the ~30 mins I was in there, patrons were about 1/2 asian and 1/2 Caucasian women. Stylists are all Cantonese speakers but I noticed one woman in the salon who seemed like the designated translators. Customers seem to like coming to this place for coloring. read more

Ever since I moved away from Queens I've been looking for a new go-to salon that's affordable and knows how to cut Asian hair. I really lucked out with Ocean! I've been to Spoke and Wheal, Mian Ting...none of them knew how to cut my hair in a way that didn't make it poof or curl unnecessarily. My hair is thick and grows quickly so it has to be thinned out and shaped. Ocean had consistently gone above and beyond. I've walked in on Tuesdays and Saturdays and never had to wait. I go to David for my pixie cut fix ups. He's fast, no BS, and always takes my preferences into consideration. He's off Wednesday and Thursday! $15 for a cut and style is definitely not bad! read more

But you'll get a mean shampoo and scalp massage, swift and efficient cut and blow-dry (haven't had anything complex here so can't speak to their styling) - all for $25. And if you're in a rush, they can get all that done in 30 min. $17 for just a cut and blow-dry. They have enough stylists that you can usually get a walk-in accommodated almost right away. Cash only. My stylist was Michelle although she seemed under the weather she performed above and beyond :) at first I was very nervous about cutting my hair especially if the person was sick but she stuck it through and was umber precise I was extremely happy at the end result. I got a a-line (aka swinger bob) cut. Total $22 included wash/style (she blew out and straightened my hair) the wash is to die for, great massage on the head and then a quick one when the was is over :) I really needed that lol. So glad I took a chance. I definitely would not have tried this salon if not for the great reviews on Yelp. The outside of the salon is a little off putting but the interior of the salon is fine. I went really early and did not ask for a specific stylist. Was just praying the whole time; telling myself it was just hair and will grow back. But he did an AMAZING job!!!!! It was one of the best cuts I have ever gotten. And the price is so low. The salon that I have been going to charges me over 2 times what Ocean charged me. You know what else is dirty? - Sitting on the subway. - Standing on the subway. - The subway, period. - Making out with that dude that you met at Lit that night. And you know what, none of those completely unavoidable aspects of NYC life end with a fly-ass blowout, so I'll take my chances. Haha, I'm kinda with Vanessa C. on this one in that I want this place to stay secret... is that selfish of me? Anyway, I recommended it to a friend today so I figured I might as well write a review here on Yelp. I've been going here since I moved back to NYC three and a half years ago on a recommendation from one of my cousins. I like to keep my hair looking fresh to death so I go every 2-3 weeks to get it tightened up. It ain't easy to look good, but I do get a lot of comments on my hair! The stylists here do a great job and the lady who does the shampoo and conditioning is worth the price of the visit from her scalp massage alone! As far as I can tell it's walk-in's only. I agree with Denise, it doesn't look like much from outside or inside, but it's clean and I'm not there for the scenery anyway. read more

Ok. I'm cheap/love blowouts I wanted to love this, like so much, I work in soho come on. So I have a lot of hair, so it was $15, still cheap...but it wasnt that good. So there were 3 of us getting blowouts in the place. One girls looked awesome, mine and the other girls, meh. With things like lifebooker etc you can find deals, 20 or 25 at a legit place, where the end result wont be so blah. The salon is also pretty dirty/smokey/obviously no english. Plus I had to wait like 30/45 minutes between the wash/blowdry. The head massage was good, but they literally use bottom of the line shampoo.... So all in all, if you have a ton of free time, short on cash, go and hope you get the one guy who knows whats up. read more

Yelp you led me astray. I saw the good reviews and low prices. I know that for a $13 haircut I can't expect much. But this was pretty awful. None of the hair cutting tools seemed to be sanitized between uses. It disgusting. This was the most uncomfortable hair cut of my life. I came in with a photo of what I wanted. It was a pretty basic short hair cut. The guy eyeballed it for a second and starting cutting my hair. I sat anxiously the whole time worried about what my hair would look like. Turns out I was right to worry as he did a haircut comparable to what I could have done myself for free. By that I mean something that did not resemble my photo at all. And of corse he took off too much length so it will be a couple of months before I can get it fixed somewhere. read more

This place is amazing for a cheap, quick blowout. Been here a couple times and never been disappointed. These guys know what they're doing. I have thick, wavy/curly hair and they do a great job blowing it out straight or wavy with volume. Not sure what the deal with their products is but don't really care, for $17 you can't go wrong. If you have thick curly hair DO NOT GO HERE. Sweet people but they don't have a clue what to do. I went in for a blow dry and left two hours later with a frizzy, poofy mess. I have to redo it when I get home. They used cheap product and cheap equipment. Definitely not coming back and and really upset I wasted the time and money. The addendum to this is that I have very curly hair. I'm sure it's a different story entirely for wavy or straight hair or even curly fine hair with minimal volume. They were very nice! I've been getting Dominican blowouts my whole life. I pay usually around 40 for them. I feel bad for my hairdresser but I think I found a new place... My hairdresser was AMAZING. I thought he was just going to straighten it but instead he blew it out for me and gave me really nice volume :) the best part? This was all under half hour and I didn't have to wait for anything! OK, I love David! I dont love K.C. He totally butchered my hair. I was trying to get an A line cut (long in the front, short in the back) and what I came out of there with was a bob. No no no. Since I moved to NYC 13 years ago I've been going here to get my haircut. I usually just get a cut and no wash/blow dry but I do recommend getting the wash because the scalp massage is worth it. When I first started coming here the Men's cut was $8 and now it's $15 (still a bargain). I've only had haircuts from either Michael or David but I prefer getting cuts from David. I don't know how much they charge for women's cuts and services but it must be reasonable because there are a lot of women (Asian & non) that get their hair done. This place is not fancy by any stretch of the imagination but for the price it's well worth it. read more
