I definitely picked an unfortunate time to come because even with an appointment I waited 45 minutes! It was a Friday night appointment at 5:15PM - granted Lunar New Year is in 10 days but omg. They are generally very nice but I'm really unsure of how they prioritize people waiting and walkins and "appointments". That being said I hate getting my haircut because I have curly hair and I haven't found a good hair salon. I'll usually end up walking out with layers which I hate because it doesn't really work for curly hair - I don't need that volume so much up top. That was the case here, and I don't know if these layers will eventually grow out and out pace my split ends, which was the main reason for the visit. I really just don't want split ends lol. Jane was nice and the stylist that my friend recommended (she has perfect hair and it might just be natural so difficult to use as a gauge haha). She had people waiting already and again the appointment doesn't really matter to a point. I'm always just not sure if curly hair cuts well with stylists in Chinatown and she advised blowing drying my hair more and coming in for cuts more frequently because my ends were so thin. I've lived in NYC for a few years now and this is the first place where I've been satisfied with my haircut. I've gone to places that are much pricier with way worse results. William was amazing! I'm super picky about the way my hair is cut - I have thick, long, coarse, straight hair so how it gets cut is exactly how it's going to look , there's no hiding it if it's bad . I had long hair below my shoulders I needed cut because it was getting too heavy and severely damaged from the bleach to make my hair blonde. So I decided with 18 Pell Hair to get my hair cut. I thought they had a closet in this salon but they don't so you need to carry your purse with you everywhere. I love the shampoo and conditioner they used to wash my hair. The shampoo smelled like expensive fruity apples. It was a subtle smell and not overly strong. They shampooed my hair twice and applied conditioner and rinsed out my hair 3 times. It was very clean and thorough. Afterwards, one of the ladies cut my hair. She was pretty fast and cut my hair at where the shoulders are with little layering. It came out very nice after the hair spray. The hair dresser was very nice too and fixed some parts of my hair that stood out. The end result cost me $45. read more

Surprisingly GREAT?!!! Had a male perm and haircut for $100!! I was a little skeptical because of how cheap it is... so I went with caution. It was completely packed, a little unorganized with how they do their customers. But they get the job done. I have a very gentle woman hairdresser who speaks English which is really helpful. Most of them just speak Chinese. But she was so good, listened to what my needs are, and alas! It was a job well done. The old lady assisting her is good too. Gave them both tips. My first review was in 2017. I had high praise for Nelson, my go-to stylist. Fast forward to today, 11/4. I went in when it was calm and not too busy. I asked Nelson for the same bob that he has given me several times in the past. Shorter in the back and slants long to the front. Usually, he will give one side shorter than the other and I have always loved this cut. Today for some reason, he did not understand what I was explaining. I also felt he seemed frazzled by everyone coming in or having to answer the phone. He's always been friendly and patient and today he was rushed. He recommended I keep the back to the base of my neck and not shorter. Then, my left side he cut it straight across which is shorter than the back and from the front view, looks choppy. When I told him that it looked choppy, if he could fix it. He was dismissive and said "it's too late, I already showed you the back. I can't go shorter" it's my hair and I want a stylized bob, why can't it go shorter?! I'm very disappointed with this cut and his attitude. He's lost me as a repeat customer. read more

I got my hair colored recently (March) and was very happy with the results. I had a long trip coming up with many photo opportunities, so I came back for some color (August). I asked for red-purple (basically the same shade I always get) but they said they don't have the purple color and gave me another color. The process was rushed and I barely got to express what I would otherwise want. They picked for me and while its not usually a problem, this time I got...black. wow. My hair is naturally black. I don't need to pay hundreds, undergo bleach (aka massive hair damage) and hair dye (more hair damage) for black hair. So, now I get to go on vacation with damaged, extra dry black hair. read more

One of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten. I asked for long layers and to keep the length and I didn't get anything I asked for. Then to top it all off throughout the entire service William (the man who cut my hair) kept trying to suggest services that would cost way more that also I just didn't want, such as dying my hair, straightening perm, oil treatment, etc. It all just seemed like a reason for me to spend more money there and it was ridiculous to be completely honest. I came in with long hair, left with half of my hair cut off. First time I got haircut there I was happy with the cut, the price and the service, because I just wanted a haircut and blowout. I did feel pressured to get some treatment, which I declined. Second time I went with my hair grown to my waist, which took me a year to achieve and I asked for a trim of 1-2 cm ( about 1 inch). I made sure to explain that I am happy with my hair length, I finally grew it out and don't want to cut the length, just the ends. I even showed on my hair strand how much I want cut at max. I also said I want to keep it long and grow it even longer. Well... Anna the stylist I went to cut at least 10-15 cm (about 6 inches) and gave me face framing bangs to my collar bones, which I never asked for! When I saw her cutting a lot I said I want it long, to which I was told she has made it "not too long, not too short" and it was so I can "style it easier". I never said I had a problem styling my long hair!! She then gave me a blowout, which made it look better, but what can I tell you, I will have to spend a year growing my front locks back... If you want to keep your long hair I suggest don't go there, at least that stylist only knows how to make the "butterfly cut" it seems. Also, the cashier asked me to pay up front because she was leaving earlier. If not that, I wouldn't have paid for the exact thing I didn't want (half my hair cut off, especially the front). I feel disregarded and violated by this service. It's true that hair grows back, but it is also true that it takes a very long time and a lot of care to grow your hair up to your waist. No wonder that place is cheap. Learned my lesson - you get what you pay for, I will not be going back. read more

The people seem nice and accommodating, but everything feels like a rush to maximize volume. I'm not one to be very disappointed in haircuts cause it will grow back. However, the cut I got was probably the most disappointing Ive ever felt. I showed the hairdresser my reference images told her shorter on sides and back leave front same. She agreed, which I thought great. Then she started off with a clipper and shaved my sides to a point of no return. It was much shorter than what I showed her. She shaved to a degree where the front looks like a widows peak, and it ended looking more like a faux hawk then a nice taper. The back was also very uneven, I told her multiple times to fix, but she kept saying it was good. It was not good. Yeah I don't think I'll be back.. read more

I got the Japanese straight perm with Nelson about a month ago. I loved it then and I still love it now! I'm really happy with my hair and would recommend Nelson in a heartbeat. My appointment was for a Tuesday morning. Nelson texted me before my appointment to make sure I didn't wash my hair a few days before the appointment. He also grabbed me a milk tea, which was just above and beyond! Ok haircut -- $35 for womens and $25 for mens. Trying out a bunch of Chinatown hair salons to avoid making the trek to Flushing. Still haven't found a great one. Called in advance and was told I could walk-in around 6pm on a Friday. Nelson cut my hair and he cut it 2 inches too short. The cut and shape is great but not for me. He was too rough with handling my head and snagged at my hair many times. Also, the blow dryer was on way too hot of a setting and I saw my hair BURN as I was getting my hair dried. Yikes. Goes without saying, heat protectant was not used on my hair before blow drying. If you are like me and picky about hair length and hair burning, think twice before you come. If you aren't too picky about your hair, this is a good spot. Mens haircut is not worth it. Go to Mian Tian instead for mens, it's like $12-15 for a men's cut. Haircut was okay but hair was left all over face and body which happens at MT too but I don't expect for a haircut of this price at this salon. Covid safety was followed but there was so much loose hair all over the salon floor that I was slipping on it... In the meanwhile, I'll still have to go to Flushing for a good haircut that doesn't break the bank :( read more

Upon entering the salon, you feel safe right away. There are plastic sheets hanging between every single chair, the register and even the hair washing station. Everyone is required to wear their masks, workers and customers alike. I have been going here for years because my mother was a regular. My go to stylist is Pat. She's always very friendly and is super competent. She asks what you want, gives some input and asks what you think. My favorite thing about her is that she doesn't listen to parents saying to keep cutting more and more hair. She's also very good with inches, if you only want 4 inches off, you get 4 inches off. My hair is super thick and long and she's good at thinning it out safely. I've been to another place that had a different way to thin hair and it permanently damaged my hair. She also is strategic and thins the hair in the middle so you cant really tell. I love her. read more

I needed a haircut. I didn't want to go into Flushing to my usual hairdresser. I was checking out every hair salon on Pell Street. I decided to give this place a try. No appointment was needed. I was a walk in. I told the receptionist I didn't have a specific hair cutter so she arranged Jane for me for a wet cut no shampoo. I showed her a picture in what I'd like a simple bob cut. She gave me bangs. She took her time cutting my hair. I'm not sure what I got looked like what I wanted. She said she layered my hair. My friend complimented my haircut that took years off. Lol. I probably will return to get my next cut because it was a convenient location for me. It was a $35 wet cut with a blow dry. No shampoo. I think I might go back to my former hairdresser in Flushing that's less expensive for a shampoo, cut, and blow dry. read more
