I ordered a 5 egg vegetable omelette. It came to the table looking like a 2 1/2 omelette and the vegetables were skimpy. The waitress took my soup to the table behind me. About 5 minutes later they told her it was not what they ordered. Then she took the food off of their table to serve to me. That is cross contamination and I refused it. Other patrons had complaints too. She was speed balling the whole duration. The service was bad and the food did not taste good. This place has been here forever. It has been one of my go to places if I want home cooked style meals when I am in this area. Most items on the menu are made ok and the portions are large. The pricing is also very reasonable. I don't think I have ever had anything here that I could say was the best I have ever had. I hadn't visited in quite a while, therefore, I thought to myself why not stop by for a quick lunch? I also do have to mention that the older men that run this restaurant are never friendly. So why would I go to a place like this? Well, as I mentioned, the portions are large and its very reasonable. Also, I make an effort to avoid fast food chains; so, I overlooked some of the flaws. Upon my visit this time, one of the crabby older men (He didn't greet me.) Grabbed a menu by the register and waved for me to follow him without making any sort of eye contact. A few seconds later we arrived at a table and he pointed to it as he threw the menu on to the tabletop and said nothing. Well I decided to order one of their daily specials which was chicken breast with spinach. I took one bite and said to my self, " Hey this is tasty". As I proceeded to cut another piece of chicken I noticed the tip of a hair. Okay, so now I thinking, it's probably one of my lashes. So I pick up the chicken and discover that it was a very long piece of hair that fused itself to the chicken when it was being cooked. I totally lost my appetite and quickly flagged down my waitress that apologized and took the dish for further inspection to the not so friendly host. She returned and said that they will replace it with a new chicken breast. At this point, I asked will the same crook make my new plate. She said yes?!? I was no longer hungry, because I lost my appetite and could not believe that the cook couldn't have not seen this very long strand of hair as he was cooking my food! I used to enjoy coming here. The last couple of times I came I had a horrible experience. I came once for breakfast. I was seated, and the waitress never came back to my table ever. Nobody checked on me or refreshed my drink or anything. I actually had to walk to the front to get my check because it was never brought to the table. Our waitress seriously seemed like she was on something. (Sorry not sorry) She was leaning on the table to the point where I had to MOVE OVER. The lemon rice soup tasted like cream of mushroom....We came for the perch because it was Friday during lent. They used to have good lake perch and Mac n cheese. We loved it! So many choices of food! That was amazing! Everything that came to our table was large, large, large portions! I can not even believe how much food and it tasted great! The waitress was great and she treated us all so nice and she was really sweet to my kids. The restrooms were clean, not spotless, but good. I've been here dozens of times and the food is generally decent and the service can be good too....but lately, particularly on this date, the service was HORRIBLE. Do not come here if you're looking for consistent quality service. We came here for breakfast this morning at 9:30 (they were not that busy at the time). We ordered right away - I ordered an omelette and my guest got one Belgian waffle. After we ordered, a number of people came in, sat down, ordered and received their food - all within a 15 minuted time period. Forty minutes later, we still did not receive any food. The waitress (who seemed grumpy from the start) kept telling us it will be up in a few minutes. The final time the waitress did her "it will be up in a few minutes" thing, I told her forget it, we're leaving. As we were getting up, the food miraculously arrived, but we walked out anyway. The manager or owner's (who dressed in all black today) only concern is pointing patrons to their tables, making sure all the chairs are scooted in and centered at empty tables and drinking coffee. If your in the Hammond area, I suggest Johnel's Restaurant on Calumet Avenue - that is where we went afterwards and had no issues, or Great Lakes Cafe in Gary. I have been a regular customer at petros for over two years now. I love dining there as its cheap (student budget), affordable and good quality food. You get a soup/salad and bread free before your main entree. You also have an option to make it a dinner, that would mean including dessert too. I enjoy their chicken noodle soup and chicken scampi for entree. It's my always when-in-doubt go-to dish! I would recommend not trying the stir fry dishes as that's just horribly cooked. Other than that, they have a very big menu and many options to choose from. Definitely find out about the specials for each day if you would feel comfortable going with that. I would say the best time to dine would be before 6-7pm thought they are open till 11-12am. The reason being that I have noticed the bread is not fresh anymore and the soup doesn't taste good afterwards. Their soup quality decreases and they add a shit ton of salt in the soup to bring flavor. So definitely dine in during decent hours and not super late. Service is excellent. Had funeral luncheon at New Petros and we arrived over an hour early in the middle of the lunch rush Instantly the staff jumped into action getting seating for 20 ready. Somehow I managed to keep an appetite and ordered the steak cooked medium well. What I received was a bloody "steak" if that's what we're calling it, that tasted like raw leather! I asked for the manager who told me that while I asked for a medium well steak; he decided to cook it medium and he would not be taking it back, so deal with it! The Godfather of Petros basically told me "that I'm going to keep the steak and I'm going to like it!" Not only did he not take it back I also had to pay for it. I really love Petros. So much in fact that I have breakfast there every morning. The owner brothers Gus, George, Kris and Peter are always making customers feel welcome. Service is horseshit! Went in 6/16 at 7 pm. Restaurant was not busy. Were shown to a booth by the owner. Waitress saw us sitting there. Ignored us as she was too busy BULLSHITTING at another table!! Finally looked over to us and said she would be right there, and then continued to BULLSHIT! We got up and moved to a different table. 3 waitresses in that section all looked at us and again, IGNORED US!! Then I hear one of them arguing that she had a table and didnt want any more.
