I would say some of the best Vietnamese food in Hilo went there twice this past week. Pho is good , broth is tasty. I add lots of chilis in mine. Cold noodles are my favorite, fried rice is also good. Service ain't 5 stars with language barrier and all ,but food makes up for it. Prices are very reasonable for Hilo. read more

I was really looking forward to takeout. We were early so it wasn't busy. Ordered Chow Fun and Kung Pow chicken. Wanted to go for basics, it was terrible. The Kung Pow was unrecognizable. The chicken was a sick grey color, no spice at all. It may have been cashew chicken, all celery. Just bad. Chow fun equally bad. Been to New Saigon several times this month. Lol. We always get their Cold Vermicelli Special Combo #29. It's enough to share with another person or save for leftovers! Yummy veggie fried rice. The summer rolls tasted good. The veggie chow fun didn't have as many vegetables as I expected. It had good flavor, but was greasy. I wish they would filter their water. Discovered this place while staying at the Hilo Seaside. Ordered the cold noodle salad with grilled pork and spring roll. Very tasty. Nice texture with the daikon, cucumbers, bean sprouts, lettuce, vermicelli. A little skimpy on the meat, though. Served with a fish-based sauce on the side. read more

So I came here last night with my daughter and did a take out of Thai ice tea, spring rolls and banh mi. Thai ice tea- way too sweet, I had to add water, lots of water to compensate the sweetness. Spring rolls- a little over fried, it looked burnt. But the sauce for the spring rolls was yums. Banh mi- the sandwich had great flavor, but too much bread and not enough filling. Then to top it off, I paid cash and gave the man who helped me tip. To add injury to insult, I didn't realize until I got back to the hotel room that the loose change he gave me wasn't even American but Thai money! DON'T EAT HERE, IT'S A RIP OFF!!! read more

So far this was one of the best pho places I've tried. The Thai tea was perfect! Not overly sweet like most places. I had the pho with rare beef which was great and the flavors of the broth were amazing! My dad had summer rolls and he loved it. We also had spring rolls which were great. I live near San Jose, CA , and get really good Pho. The beef Pho was the best I have had in years. They have some Chinese dishes too. Service was good and there is even a view of the ponds. I like the casual eating area. The spring rolls were good and a bit different, maybe had sweet potato in them? I will never go to this resturant again, the service was terrible, the food was ok not the best pho in town. By the time I got service and food, I was so frustrated that I did not want to eat anymore. The server ignored us for 30 minutes. He did not even give us a menue to look at, instead I had to walk up to the front and order. After my experience there I wouldn't suggest this place. I don't know why this place is getting 4 stars. The services here is so slooooooooooow. Took the guy 20 minutes to take our order and I had to walk to him to tell him what we wanted. Another 30 minutes for the food to come out. Seriously, it does not take 30 minutes to make pho and rice plates. After we're done, I asked for the check and walked to the guy to pay for it. We live near this place and we could easily go anywhere in Hilo but we keep going to New Saigon. It is a simple, family run restaurant. The food tastes great and they cook with pride and love. The won-ton/egg noodle soup is spot on and their other Vietnamese dishes are as true as Hilo can produce. This aint Viet Nam, after all. read more

I should have known when it said Vietnamese/Chinese food. family owned and the whole family was eating when we arrived. didn't pay much attention to us. I've patronized this place for about two years but no more. I was home sick with a cold last week and a good friend brought me beef pho from this place but they forgot to put in the meat. When my friend returned the next day the owner said that she did put meat in the pho basically calling us liars. The chicken pho also lacked meat. She denied this as well. I followed up myself with a phone call to express my disappointment but she clearly did not care. I've routinely recommended this place in the past, however, due to their extremely poor customer service I will definitely be steering people away from this place. I'd have to start off that this isn't the cleanest place in Hilo, but it's an ok atmosphere here. You can tell everything is made fresh and not store bought or frozen. They are even prepping in the table area, which for me it's ok because I like to see freshness at the start. However, the food is ok! I really enjoyed the chicken pot stickers! Fresh and homemade and not burnt or dark like the spring rolls. Spring rolls are a bit darker than most I've eaten at different places but its ok as well. I had the combination pho and I love how the meat is cut (thick) and the tendons are my favorite! Noodle amount was good not too little or too much. I love the broth here too! If you are ok with having a little run down place but want fast and pretty ok to good Vietnamese food, this is the place to go! After waking early in the morning and finishing almost 8-9miles of hike, we reached our hilo hotel pretty late and was lucky to see this place open and excepting orders :). Its family ownened buisness and the old lady is the cook who also take orders:). I ordered lemon chicken with rice and my wife ordered pad thai with tofu. I didnt like my chicken that much as it was fried (not a fan of fried chicken) + the sauce was towards sweet side. I guess this is there way of cooking of lemon chicken. I really liked the order of my wife pad thai ...with perfect touch of spice, as usual she wasnt able to finish it so i finished it as i didnt have my chicken that much ..due to sweeter side. I ordered the beef combination pho soup. The soup was really greasy. It's also really pricey compared to NYC. It's around $10 - $12 for a bowl of noodles with soup. In NYC it's usually $5 - $7. New Saigon is hands down the best Vietnamese Restaurant in Hilo Town. We dined for lunch there just now --- had to order the vermicelli, grilled pork and spring roll combo and was blown away by the fabulous tasting grilled pork, the freshness of the vermicelli (not that glob of noodles stuck together experience we've had so many times) and the perfectly fried spring rolls. My hubby insisted we share a bowl, and I totally regret not having my very own! I will definitely be back to satisfy my craving for authentic and well prepared vietnamese food.
