This is the only shop in the area that can cut me flank steak in thin slices for beef jerky (grandfather's recipe) - no other grocery store butcher in the area can do it correctly, and I certainly am not any good either. After seeing that they opened a new location in North Mt Pleasant (in the shopping center with Walmart, Kohl's, etc.), I decided gift cards to here would make great Christmas presents for my brothers. So first, PLEASE open a location on Johns Island! (Wishful thinking) As a previous resident of Columbia, NYBS was one of my go-to locations for quick, easy and delicious dinners. They have the most amazing case of prepared foods -- both fresh and frozen. They also have weekly / nightly meal deals, often with warm prepared dinners so you literally just pick it up and take it home. Their salads are wonderful as well. Oh and the boozy ice cream.... mmm. My husband and I visited a week before my due date to stock up on freezer meals so we had some delicious dinners ready to be heated up during those first few exhausting weeks. I've also brought the freezer meals to new parents several times and they're always so appreciated. My only gripe is that there isn't a location on my side of the peninsula -- I hold out hope that one day it will happen. read more

After a few experiences, here's my verdict on this Butcher Shoppe. In the short of it, the place is great. The staff are all friendly and helpful and there's so much to choose from in such a small space. First and foremost, they're a butcher shop. You'll find beautiful selections of all types of meat and it seems like they can pretty much get you whatever you want. There's a big wine selection and when I stopped in the other day, they had Bruno offering samples... free wine! They have a deli with a bunch of sandwich options... mostly of the Italian variety plus a handful of grocery items like sauces and dry pasta. All that being said, my best thing about this butcher is all the prepared foods! You'll find pre-formed gourmet burgers, filled pasta like ravioli, tortellini, and even manicotti. You can get trays of sides like mac and cheese or twice baked potatoes. Plus they have entree's portioned for couple, a family, or a party! Some options I've seen are meatball, chicken, eggplant, or veal parmigiano and even a beef stroganoff which sounds fantastic. You'll find some of these items refrigerated and others frozen. I picked up a party tray of the chicken parm for dinner. It was $25 plus I added a container of fresh sauce for $5. We baked it in the oven for about an hour and a half, added a pound of ziti and a fresh stick of bread. Five people ate dinner and we still had leftovers. I was so impressed with the quality of the cutlets and the amount of cheese in the tray, I can't wait to go back. We counted them up and there were nine big cutlets in the party tray. My only gripe is that I want to love the sandwiches from the deli counter, but I just can't. In theory, they all sound amazing and they are stacked with an insane amount of meat. That's where the problem comes in, the sandwich ratio is about 10% bread, 5% cheese, and 85% deli meat. If they got a crusty sub roll that could stand up to the amount of meat on these sandwiches, they would be great, but after 2 trips to the deli counter, everyone I picked up subs for felt the same way. This will in no way stop me from being a frequent customer here and can't wait to discover more items in the cases and pick up some fresh meats too. read more

This Butcher Stall has been in my to do list for a few years now. I finally made it today. As I walked through the door I was immediately transported back home to Europe and the familiarity of local family owned shops. It just can't be beat. This shop is chock full of fabulous organic meats, home made dishes, wine (that's a first for me... Wine in a butchers shop) dressinggs,, frozen veggies and sauces galore. It's fabulous in here. The staff were super friendly knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. It's a busy little spot in here with many customers coming & going while I was here. All the meats are organic. Today I bought some marinated chicken breasts. I cooked them when I got home and they were delicious. The meats are pricey but you get what you pay for. It's important to me to buy healthy non processed non chlorinated meat and the best way to do that is to buy & support local. I will return often. read more

Well, I've been jonesing for a good corned beef sandwich for a while.... After a mishap at another establishment, I found the shop on DI made them on fabulous rye bread! It was nice and lean, good flavor and they didn't skimp on the meat! No, it's not as big as Carnegie's in NYC but you were full after finishing!! Been going here for years - and happy that they have opened on IOP. There is no better place to get steaks, chicken, pork and pretty much any other kind of meat you want. They also have some really nice wine, specialty items, and a wide variety of frozen entrees in large and small quantities - great option on IOP for vacationers. They showcase pre-made dinners for pick up a couple times a week - just sign up for their emails. Hard to beat the Monday whole chicken with rice and a salad serving 4 for $19.95. If you're a fan of meatballs like I am, this is a definite stop you must make! For as many times as I've been here, I've yet to actually get any meat from the counter. I work close by and venture there on my lunch breaks for the sandwiches. Easily one of the best meatball subs I've ever had. The guy behind the counter, Brian, mixes the marinara with the cheese so instead of getting sauce all over the place and dripping out of your sandwich, it stays in the bread and allows for even disbursement of cheese, sauce and meatballs--very important on a meatball sub. The bread is nice and soft which allows you to devour it quickly without crusty bread tearing up the inside of your mouth. My chef friend also swears by their Brooklyn sandwich, saying it's the best he's had outside of NYC. I will not argue with him. There are lots of yummy looking prepared foods, a nice cheese selection, and a small but killer wine selection. Definitely a one-stop place for a picnic or on your way out to the beach. The only downside is they have no small sides or bags of chips to go with their sandwiches. I have had several steaks, bacon Gouda Mac and cheese and their twice baked potatoes. All of it was delicious. Last night we tried their bacon burgers and they were the best burgers I have ever had. I will take some of the credit since I grilled them, but the taste and thickness of the burger was perfect. My next door neighbor recommended this place to me and had nothing but praise for the cuts of beef. I came in with high hopes and was not disappointed. In addition to some very nice Choice cuts of beef they have some other unique items. For example - Duck fat, chicken broth and various types of sausage. So I received an email today about a prime rib dinner and to call and order by 2 for pickup after 5. So being my absolute favorite meal I immediately called. I was told it's just a "robo email" that's goes out but due to the pandemic, there's no prime rib. (Start my tears of sadness). Ok, I get it and completely understand so we hang up. 2 minutes later the gentleman calls me back (sorry, don't recall his name) and told me that if I received the emails others have to so he'll cook a prime rib. WHAT??? Woohooo!!!! Ok! I order a rib and a little bit, cooked med-rare, for MYSELF! I go and pick it up about 5:15 and by far, one of the BEST pieces of prime rib I've had. My mom and stepdad always go out to a great steakhouse in downtown Charleston for their anniversary, but couldn't go this year with COVID. I went to NY Butcher Shoppe to pick up steak, twice baked potatoes and sides so I could recreate the restaurant feel at home, and all of the food was incredible. They had prime rib and my husband and I had filet - no one needed a steak knife to cut through their meat. It was like butter. I live in Chicago so I'm used to GREAT steak - this was better. I've been here a few times. The filets are alright but not worth the price. I got the Beef Stroganoff the other day and it wasn't good. The noodles were overcooked and mushy (before I heated it up they were mushy). The pieces of steak were chewy and fatty, seemed to be leftover meat scraps or something. If someone comes in and buys this as a first purchase I doubt they will return to buy a steak. My daughter, who loves steak, spit it out because she couldn't chew it. The salad I got with it was okay but the lettuce was starting to go bad and was a little soft. Also one salad dressing isn't enough, they should give two. My husband and I used to be regulars at the butcher. It recently changed ownership (as we were told by the employees). We tried to buy a gift certificate for a friend and they said because it was new ownership, they wouldn't do that. We were surprised considering we were trying to spend a pretty substantial amount. We asked if management could possibly figure something out, but they simply refused. Shortly after, I went in to purchase some meats for a party. I had a coupon that I forgot at home. I asked if they would still let me get the discount, and the associate laughed at me and made a snide remark about how I obviously didn't understand the point of a coupon. I was so taken back from his comment, I walked out. I am really disappointed that the service has taken such a back seat to the product here.
