There has been many administrative changes in the last 3-4 years. The staff from 3-4 years ago are ALL gone. This is a whole new administration. The original principal, Mr. Huang, was here for many years, and established a good system of strictness, order, and tradition. After him a new principal came and decided to make things less traditional - 1) comic book fonts on bulletin boards, 2) cartoon characters instead of traditional chinese figures on pamphlets, 3) eliminated the class ranking system, 4) incorporated "participation" awards that cheapens the merit of actual hard working students. What made this school special was its firm adherence to tradition. Amongst a sea of schools tauting progressive policies, this school was a safe-haven for traditional learning. The new principals want all things progressive -(which means - no student/parent accountability & it's all the teacher fault!!). The school administration wants ALL kids to pass and puts a tremendous amount of pressure on teachers to make this happen. The admin insists to teachers that no kid can fail under their watch. If kids don't do their HW, its the TEACHERS fault. No accountability to the lazy parents who use this place like a daycare. Teachers are expected to perform miracles. Kids have already figured out -- The administation/teachers won't fail them; so there is no incentive to do any work. Parents don't care if their kids do HW, because they just use this place as a day-care center. So what are teachers left to do?! They are left to 1) inflate grades, 2) falsify grades, 3) give kids answers to tests, 4) pass kids who really shouldn't. This creates an atmosphere of low-morale. Bad kids who don't do work - don't get penalized!! Good kids see this - and wonder: why work so hard? It's a downward spiral fueled by bad administrative policies. Beware of this: Some teachers help the kids to cheat on exams. I've heard students chat in the hallways about how a teacher GAVE them the answers during a test. The kids knew it was wrong. Other have stated that questions on the test were given BEFORE the test. All this is to ensure the teacher gets good results and looks good in front of the principal. But at the end it's just a bunch of cheating and lying at the expense of a child's education/learning. Again, awful policy. Policies that sound great on paper, but fail in real life. Parents in this school are mostly lazy. Only about 5% of the parents care about their child's performance and work. The rest treats this place as a day-care. They contribute to the low morale in a BIG way. A classic example is the other reviewer - "Wendy C", who seems to think school rules don't apply to her. These are the kind of bratty, entitled parents who don't teach their kids any manners and think rules don't apply to them. Admin needs to stop being weak/cowardly and stand up to lazy parents. More interesting tid-bits from the inside: 1) There is something else interesting going on in this school : There is a large family in this school of around 10 kids. Teachers have complained that these kids don't do ANY school work. Yet, their parent signs them up for ALL kinds of school competitions to MILK the trophies and awards. They want the trophies to build up their extra-curricular portfolio for college admission. I've witnessed many kids that SHOULD have received awards but got squeezed out by this large family, simply because of 1) their shear size 2) a lame administration 3) a lenient scoring system that favors them. Since this family is not ethnically Chinese - they are given extra lenient scoring in the competitions. These kids should not be allowed to attend school competitions if they don't do classwork/HW/essays. It should be : No HW or Classwork = No opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities. Extra-curricular is a reward for the best students, not for kids who don't do HW. Again, a lame, weak administration that can't stand up to someone who is obviously milking their system for their own college agenda. Teachers complain about this, but admins are weak and do nothing. 2) Teachers are NOT happy in this school. They say the administration is making it harder for them. They are STRESSED. 3) The previous principal, Principal Huang, went to EVERY school competition in a formal suit. This new principal once went to a school competition in a HOODIE - if she decides to show up. 4) There used to be a Taiwan based Chinese Language Test given yearly (called the CCCC test). They got rid of this test and went with a new test. This new test is not administered by Taiwan. If you look into the new test, it has Chinese (China) propa ganda in it. Beware of this school. Something has changed big-time after Principal Huang left. All sorts of new agendas/policies are set in place to ruin this once great, traditional school. read more

Here is a list of what is wrong with NYCS 1) RAMPANT cheating - teachers give out the exam questions and essay question the week before the test. When students don't know something on a test, the teachers tell the students where to find the answer in the test paper. 2) Progressive Agendas - every child gets a trophy. Much time is spent rewarding a child that cries on stage, instead of rewarding those that prepared to compete. In the end, it doesn't matter hard a child worked to compete because EVERYBODY gets a trophy. 3) Caters to trophy moms. NYCS allows students who do not attend class to participate in competitions. One mother is notorious for never bringing her child to class - but participates in every school competition. She brings her child to competitions, arrives late, then requests her daughter get squeezed somewhere in the schedule, and leaves right after her daughter is done. Competitions are an extra-curricular activity rewarded to the best students, not for students and parents who don't even respect basic protocol!! 4) Administration is super weak. As you can see from example 3 they let parent do whatever they want. The administration has no backbone, no fore-sight. Once they thought it was a good idea to have random adults take classes at the same time, in the same space as little children. Random adults (not parent of students) that would be in the same space as little children, sharing the same bathroom. This might have been ok 20 years ago. But with the recent news about weird things - this was just a dumb idea. NO leadership, no fore-sight. 5) Took away all forms of traditional Chinese culture and replaced it with cartoon-ish characters. More progressivism. read more

When I was around six or so, my mom signed me up for this school's weekend Chinese class and I've stayed in it till I was 15 where I graduated from its junior high course. All I have to say for it was that it was a lovely experience. Though my memory when I was younger was a bit hazy, I still remember having passionate teachers who were great at motivating the kids and overall could keep the child's attention on learning Chinese. It was not overbearing in the slightest and breaks were reasonably given in their tough classes. Many times the topics required some studying that caused many to struggle but the teachers did all they could to guide the students back on track whether it is addressing their confusion or aide in arranging a schedule for the student to properly follow. The work and tests are reasonable and those who struggled were just less enthusiastic to learn even though there was much incentives along the way whether the teacher took out of their own paycheck to buy rewards or the scholarships the school provides upon graduation of each of the school levels (elementary, junior high, and high school). read more

With 115 years of outstanding work and more to come, the organization continues to grow, thrive, and benefit many people in need of extra support. By actively participating in the community, they continue to stay true to themselves and contribute to the bettering of the Chinatown community. Being a nonprofit organization shows the selflessness and dedication these workers have and have continued to demonstrate clearly in their hard work to set the next generation up for success. There is a constant push for the learning and understanding of Chinese and Taiwanese culture. Most of the children enrolled being Chinese, the classes' teachings helps these kids understand where they come from and appreciate their roots. Even being a volunteer myself, I've learned so much about my culture.
