Reedpop (the promotional company for NYCC) always seems to go out of their way to eff us ticket buyers up, year after year. Be it the extra step in the registration process... or their newest monkey wrench, the sale and purchase of single day passes only, ugh. What will they think of next?? In addition to the logistical pitfalls, it's easy to see that NYCC hardly commands the same star studded lineup that its San Diego iteration is privy to. Guess that's the benefits of having easy access to Hollywood (doubt NYCC will ever see a guest panel featuring Earth's mightiest heroes)... but that's not to say that NYCC doesn't put together some panels with amazing geekdom credibility. For all the pitfalls that NYCC has, at the end of the day you will have a great time here. Whether you be donned in your custom-crafted cosplay outfit, or suit up with t-shirts with some of the most esoteric of nerdy references... you can rest assured that there will be something here to whet your whistle (or tickle that nerdy funny bone of yours.... that sounded a bit dirty, didn't it). So be ready to bust out your phones, because I'm fairly certain you'll be lighting up your social media with pictures and videos of the glorious nerd-dom going on for the duration of the convention. Heck, if you decide to dress yourself up as well, don't be surprised if you have people going up to you and requesting that they have pictures taken with you (or more accurately, a picture of the costume you've dressed yourself up with). They do allow you to re-enter the convention, so feel free to go out and about the immediate vicinity (it's safe, don't worry). You'll notice plenty of other people wandering about too, gloriously displaying their outfits to a bewildered public. This is especially true if you have to venture closer to Madison Square Garden, if you plan on attending some panels at the satellite locations (i.e. the aforementioned MSG, or the Hammerstein Ballroom). It's fun to see the reactions of other people who have no idea what's going. While we're on the topic, the satellite locations tend to have tighter security, and will not allow outside food or drink; I'm sure the same standards apply to the main convention at the Javits Center, but it appears that event security there is more lax; makes sense (at least for MSG), who hire out their own security for their facilities. Overall, this will probably be one of the nerdier things you can do in NYC. Be loud, be proud, be nerdy AF. read more

Geeks everywhere, holy crap! This is probably one of the few places where geeks feel welcomed and accepted. These days, however, it's more of a pop culture money making arena. 2013 in review: - Less crowded than last year. Probably due to the RFID tag implementation. Good idea. - Artist alley hidden in the far north corner. Poor artists - 7 train station still not built yet. Hopefully by next year. - Not enough freebies. I finally got a chance to go to New York Comic Con this year. It was the Thursday tickets, as every other day is sold out immediately. -- JAVITS -- My friend and I took the new 7 train to the west side where the Javits Convention Center is located. This venue is an entire New York block. The entire convention is *huge*. If you have your pass (in the mail), ignore the standby line outside and find an attendant at the entrance so you can immediately go in. -- THE CONVENTION -- How to even begin to describe this place. There are a lot of people. Despite the entire block this event takes up, there are still a lot of people. If I had to break it down, there are five main areas: 1) The exhibition area: This consists of comic book and related retailers of all sorts; they make up the majority of the space here. You can buy comics, toys, really old vintage toys and comics, artwork, props, and so much more! MOAR! Bring all your money. 2) The autograph area: This is most of the downstairs floor. Look at the list of celebrities showing for the day on the Comic Con website and find their signing times. Prices start around $40 going up to $100+. You can have celebrities sign custom items (which you will have to carry around with you the entire time you're here). 3) The artists' area: This is east of the entrance, or actual north. You will find comic book artists of all types showing off their work. You can buy and get their stuff autographed, some will draw quick sketches of you for a fee. There are really creative people here, and I grabbed some business cards of the ones I was interested in. 4) The movie promotion areas: These are exhibits scattered mainly at the entrance and throughout. They range from marketing the movie, to having you stand in line to get a picture with a prop/person. Most have giveaways of some sort just for participating. Check them out. 5) The panels area: Last and certainly not least are the panels. These are 1-2 hour talks about all types of different topics. There are multiple going on at any one time and their scheduling is staggered throughout the day. I really suggest you try one or two or three per day while you're here to make full use of your pass. There are some interesting topics and the more popular ones will have a long line, so get there early for the ones you're interested in. -- PEOPLE -- There are a lot of people as I've said. Imagine it being a constant parade. It does thin out in the later parts of the day, but it can be overwhelming the first time. -- COSPLAY -- "Cosplay is not consent." That's a sign you will see everywhere here. What that means is: don't take pictures of someone just because they're in costume--ask them first! And honestly, all it takes is a simple, "Hi! Could I get a photo of/with you?" and most people will be glad to take a photo. Don't be a creeper, smile and ask; you'll get a much better photo. If you plan on cosplaying, I noticed a lot of people put on their costumes once they stepped inside. You can imagine why. Imagine taking the subway in full costume; it can be a weird feeling if this isn't something you're used to. Do what you're comfortable with, but definitely come as your favorite character. It's like an extra day for Halloween. -- SUMMARY -- If you love comics or pop culture movies, this is a fun place to go for a day. If you can somehow manage to get tickets when they are immediately available, get a weekend ticket. The Friday/Saturday/Sunday tickets have more famous stars autographing, and the panels are even more interesting. For the price, you could be here all day or all four days and it would totally be worth the money. Recommended. read more

This review is based on Fridays's attendance only. The panels are not as good as those offered last year. The trend is to show whole episodes and leave little time for audience Q&A. This is perhaps because the questions posed are often non-sensical. There is an increased number of graphic novel and other publishers than last year, likely in large part due to the huge success of Marvel. Increased gaming presence as well. Decreased celeb and photo ops. The wrist band requirement is a welcome addition. The panels need better moderators. read more

Well first off I, the good news is I met an astronaut. Mike Massimino was on two trips to repair the Hubble telescope. Thanks to his efforts, we now can survey the landscape of space prior to colonization. Time for the bad news. Greed, discrimination, corruption, harassment. Greed - so the process to get the tickets was we had to create a fan verification profile. Then the system would send us a personalized link to access the ticket purchase page customized to our profile. The profile can only be used to activate only one ticket of each type in an effort to eliminate fraud and gray market resales. So when the fateful day came for me to log in, I was in queue from 12 noon until 4:30 when I was finally able to buy my tickets. MY SUNDAY ONLY TICKETS WHEN I WANTED 4 DAY PASSES. Thankfully my friends were able to get me some so instead of paying $110 for the 4 day, I paid $190 total for individual days. Fantastic. And then I saw Groupon selling NYCC tickets. Fabulously frustrating. And when I was there, we saw discrimination everywhere. Blue shirt volunteers abusing authority only allowing one specific demographic to sit in empty seats. Panel guests favouring females by answering their questions and rewarding them with prizes. Lack of enforcement for people who break the rules such as causing gridlock on the show floor. And of course the lack of respect from fellow attendees regarding personal space. Then there werethe selection of panels. Panels that focused on niche demographics such as Women, LGBT, black and asian representation as both creators and created in the comic medium. The ironic part was that these topics were segregated from each other when they should have been integrated together. I will always maintain that the most powerful character in all of comics is the disabled Barbara Gordon during her time as oracle in the No Man's Land story arc. She proved the strength of will with intuition, motivation, creativity, and critical thinking. The fact that she was a girl didn't matter. The fact that she was wheel chair bound didn't matter. The fact that all the advanced technology was not at her disposal didn't matter. They were just small parts of her character and thats how we should address any minority aspect of any demographic whether it be gender, sexual identity, race, religious denomination, or any other divisible class we can think of. The fact that comics always had diversity imbedded in their roots and these segregated panels only act as discriminatory tools to exclude others disgusts me to no end. So to end this rant... Matt Murdock - Catholic Storm - Black woman Cassandra Cain - Asian Batgirl Kamala Khan - Muslim girl T'challa - Black Panther North star - homosexual male superhero Kate Kane - homosexual jewish woman There is a long list out there and it's already well integrated into mainstream comics media. So how about all the "sensitive social justice" hypocrites who organize these panels and who also attend these panels grow up. It's not the comic book characters nor creators who need to diversify, it's our minds that have to be open to the possibility of integration. And from what I've seen and experienced in NYCC for the past 5 years, we've been regressing imensely. It's time for us to do better. P.S. The the best way I can describe NYCC is to say it's like a drug. I keep going back for that wonderful high despite all of the money I waste on it, and despite all of the down sides. The downsides being: rude staff that herd you like cattle if you get there early, it being insanely crowded, having an anxiety attack trying to get tickets, your phone not working because *everyone's* phones are overloading the cell towers, it being impossible to meet up with friends because of the crowds, way too many street passes from NJ, the fact that they killed big apple anime fest, hardly any anime attractions, and the post con depression you are guaranteed to suffer afterwards. In spite of all of those things, all of which suck, I am still giving NYCC 5 stars, even though I should probably only give them 4 or 3. This is because despite all of those things, I can really only seem to remember the wonderful parts: finding anime figures I've been looking for, cosplaying, seeing other cosplayers, getting to wear super flashy geek outfits, feeling as though I am among my own kind, loads of free stuff, finding out about awesome businesses that I would not have learned of otherwise, and running into someone that I haven't seen in years (this happens every year for me). So there you have it, 5 stars even though they deserve less because I'm addicted to them like crack. The only thing worse than not suffering their abuses of you and your wallet is seeing your friends post pictures and not getting to go at all. read more

First of all, I previously gave this 3 stars partially because of overpriced tickets on their sister resale site this year (due to limited attendance) and ridiculous overcrowding. I went this year and changed my opinion. They finally in recent weeks opened up tickets again at the regular price after being forced to limit attendance because of coronavirus/social distancing. The overcrowding is a major issue as walking on the main floor (I believe one level up) is absolutely obscenely crowded and that makes it difficult to get around and see everything. I went to this I believe in 2016 and 2018, (or it may have been 2015 and 2018), and I also attended this year, in 2021. Anyway, I had a great time all three times, and it is unlike any geek event you will ever see. The only real problem is the crowds which are absolutely insane. There are literally over 100,000 people each day. (most people are all on the main floor which seems to stretch for miles) The main floor must have over 1000 vendors that sell everything from comics to rare cards to unique figures to t-shirts and even some sports and video game-related things. I went on Thursday the first 2 times i went, and this year on a Sunday. It is always so packed that you can never walk more than 1 foot ahead of you without bumping into someone, aside from the area in front of the restrooms which is also relatively packed. My experiences were amazing, I saw Mark Hamill signing autographs which he charged $300 per autograph with a line that was ridiculously long. I saw a panel with Michelle Rodriguez in 2018 and another panel with Todd McFarlane (around 2015 or 2016), and saw Impractical Jokers panel in 2018. This year, in 2021, I was able to sample a Playstation 5 game for free for a full 40 minutes (there is a 45-minute limit to play games). I was a die-hard gamer but don't want to spend over $1000 to buy a PS5, so it was awesome to be able to play it for free. I paid about $40 to $45 per ticket when i went the first 2 times. This year, in 2021, I paid around $60 per ticket ($67 after fees). What I experienced all three times I went was incredible. Comics worth up to $3 million for one issue. Massive posters of upcoming movies or comics or games. Independent sellers selling unique figures. Video Game systems set up to play for free. Holy grails of Video games graded being sold, and Holy Grails of Comic Books. Mega Celebrities. Huge Graphic Novel selections and 50 or more comic sellers with probably tens of millions of dollars of inventory. Walking around you see the best cosplay costumes you will ever see. The celebrities were not nearly as high-scale this year, in 2021, most likely because it seemed a ton canceled for fear of contracting the coronavirus. A ton of panels this year were digital-only, unlike previous years. The crowds are beyond massive, even on Thursday. Walking through any area on any level is claustrophobic, which I can deal with, but getting to and from any panel or whatever is very difficult. Way too many people packed together in a massive space, so at the very least intimidating. Still worth it but be prepared to stand and walk for hours to see and do everything, especially on the main floor. I suggest getting there later in the day when at least some people have left to avoid crowds getting in and while inside. This year, I got there on Sunday at 1:15PM and had barely enough time to fit everything in before they closed at 5PM. Getting there when they open which is I think 10AM on all 4 days is a huge mistake because you will want to avoid crowds. read more

First time visitor to NY Comic Con from Australia! This show was just so big I had no idea where to start or finish. The exhibitor display was well laid out and the grid format was good for covering the floor without repeating! The bonus today was I saw Whoppi Goldberg at the show up close! The venue is perfect for such an event and using Will Call had no problems getting my access tag. I had trouble with connecting to the WiFi and registering my tag. The rest rooms could have used extra signage. There was a lack of seating which meant many spread in areas all through corridors. Access to free water stations was needed as it was very crowded and quiet warm. The food at the venue very pricey but it is what it is in big commercial venues. Looking forward to Comic Con heading down under to Australia! read more

Too crowded omg! Nowhere to sit! All the tables and chairs were taken. lines everywhere! Couldn't even get my toddler fed. Not enough booths for kids in my opinion and why aren't they using cash registers in the booths? Holy crap it was a horrible time. I felt like I was gonna cry because it was so crowded and I was scared my toddler was going to get trampled on. This was my second time coming to NYCC and I don't think I'll be going back for awhile. NYCC is a great experience. I believe it is the biggest Comic Con only second to San Diego. There is always lots to do and even more to see. There are lots of panels available as well which feature lots of celebrities. Be sure to take full advantage of everything available including all of the various activities offered by various company booths. To make the most of your experience, consider getting the 4-day pass. Plan accordingly as some panels and activities may overlap and are even off site outside of the Javits Center. One thing to be mindful of is the rules of these other venues. An example is the Madison Square Garden venue, which I attended the Walking Dead Panel this year. Although photos were allowed during Comic Con at the Javits Center, these other venues, such as Madison Square Garden, do not allow professional-type cameras. All of those along with some comic-con weapons (lots of Negan bats) had to be checked in. Given all of the above, this place gets very very crowded, more and more, year after year. Crowds can be good as you can find the most cosplayers, which is worth the price of admission in itself, on the more crowded days. If you prefer lesser crowds a good suggestion to go earlier on on Thursday and even on Friday. Those may be your best bets. Getting there is now a lot easier with the addition in recent years of the 7 train Hudson Yard Station which practically gets you about a half a block away from the Javits Center. Driving can be tough due to many of the garages in the area offer "event parking" rates and jack up the price of up to $50-$60. I drove and ended up parking about 10 blocks away or so in a garage and paid a decent full day (Saturday) rate of $19. read more

First time at comic con this year. Happy to see there are more reviews up about the event as I think yelpers are giving some great advice. First up: on Thursday the event doesn't open to the public until 3pm. Good to know! But it also stays open later on Thursday night. I didn't go to any of the panels (which was maybe a good thing as the waits seemed long and not guaranteed), but I thoroughly enjoyed browsing all the vendors. I am super into freebies, and the best ones were the signed books being given out by Penguin. I was on the hunt for some sort of higher quality harry potter or Hunger Games themed jewelry, but everything was made of cheaper materals. The best part of comic con were all the fans! The costumes were lots of fun to look at and take pictures of. Everyone was in a super good mood. I have to only give this event 3 stars because I think the comic cons in other cities (looking at you, San Diego) are much better. read more

Wow wow wow!! This was our first time at NYCC! It was a four day event for which we attended two. So many things to do and see. Highlights include: Pretty decent seats for the 'Stranger Things' panel, second row seats for 'Punisher' panel and front row seats for Stan Lee's last ever panel hosted by Kevin Smith. Other goodies include getting to shop at Funko, Agents of Shield cast in cosplay and seeing them front and center. The cosplay of fans was incredible. So much time and talent. Of course this was beyond any crowd you could imagine. The number of people was out of this world. Friday the line to get in wrapped several blocks but it went quickly; about 45 minutes. Sunday was much easier getting in (10 minutes) however Sunday was more packed. This event was so well organized and I was just amazed at the efficiency. Really a great thing to experience. An absolute bucket list item for sure. read more

Very well done this year with the badges beings swiped in and out. Interactive app map and panels and guests was really very helpful in navigating an unmitigated chaos of people! New York Comic Con is a much easier beast to conquer than San Diego Comic Con. Being a resident of Gotham, I am already used to the lines, the smells, and the scantily clad citizens. Here are some of the differences compared to SDCC. Pros: -Badges are much easier to obtain and you can see everything in one day -The smaller venue makes it more intimate and easier to meet artists or talk to companies running booths -Exclusive toys & limited edition prints are easier to collect Cons: -The smaller venue and being located in Manhattan makes for zero off-site activities -Companies invest all their marketing for SDCC, so they do not have as many announcements / freebies -The walkways between exhibit booths are narrower. People sit and clutter up the aisle walkways, which they are not allowed to do at SDCC. read more

This is my 4th time going to comic con and I had a blast! I was working at one of the food trucks over the weekend. It does truly get packed at the event especially on Friday and Saturday. I recommend if its your first time going to bring comfortable walking shoes, advil and snacks. Also if you are going to check out the panels, also double check the times. I went to NYCC a couple years ago, in 2014 or '15, and I had a blast! Met and got an autograph from my favorite anime voice actor, saw amazing cosplay, spent the majority of my time in Artist Alley marveling at the amazing art, and went to a couple of informative panels. This year was quite different... I was miserable after 10 minutes walking through the door and being on the show floor. I could barely breathe let alone move and get proper looks at all the different booths and merch. I've been to plenty of conventions before so I know things can get crowded and traffic flow can be slow but this year took it to a whole new level as EVERY SECTION (expect for the panel area) was filled beyond the brim with people. If you wanted to travel from the show floor to artist alley, good luck getting there faster than a slow shuffles pace. It just seemed like there wasn't enough room to accommodate for the masses of people there. I ended up missing out on a booth I really wanted to visit because I became so anxious from the crowds I couldn't handle being there anymore. Artist Alley, while a favorite convention attraction of mine, was greatly disappointing. A lot of the art was unoriginal meaning many different booths looked like they were carrying similar looking pieces to each other. I normally have to fight against the urge to buy so much art, and this year I was lucky to find one piece I liked enough to buy. Cosplay is normally my favorite part of conventions, but when hallways or other areas would be clogged because of ANOTHER spontaneous photo shoot I wanted to scream. Related to that, I only took about 2 or 3 pictures total of cosplayers when I normally can't stop taking pics; there was no room for a proper pic but that didn't stop some people from disrupting the already sh*t flow of traffic. All food stands had huge lines so I went to the food court which had shorter lines but was overpriced ($30 for two entrees of mushy chicken and bland fried rice) with barely any place to sit, and I mean floor space included! When I desperately needed to use the bathroom, there wasn't a single ladies bathroom that didn't have a line that wrapped around a wall and ran the length of a hallway. Even the men's room accumulated lines after a point. I ended up having to leave and use a bathroom at a nearby fire station! Panels are another attraction I normally enjoy so long as there are good ones to choose from and this year there was not. Granted I did go on Sunday and there tends to not be too much going on - I'm aware of this as a con frequenter - but this was ridiculous. There was one panel I went to the entire time I was there and I left early because I felt I wasn't benefiting from it in any way. Note that my rating is more like a 1.5 giving the extra .5 because my first experience a couple years ago was so great. But this year I brought my boyfriend and he is a convention newbie with this being his first NYCC. I bought the tickets as a birthday gift since his birthday was earlier that week and he said he never wants to go back again! Honestly if I could ask for one improvement it would be to either move to a larger location to accommodate all the people or limit the amount of passes sold more. I understand this is the largest Comic Con on the east coast and it grows every year, but if the standards are not adapting to handle this then the quality will continue to drop and more reviews like this one will be made. Very disappointed in NYCC this year and will not be returning until such improvements have been made. P.S. The ticketing process is a disgrace! I had a fan verified profile so I had access to special "pre-sale" sale of tickets and I was planning on buying Saturday tix since each purchase could buy up to 4 tix - perfect, I had myself and three friends! That was until the pre-sale sale could only sell to people who were "fan-verified" so I could buy a ticket for myself but not for any of my friends...this was not made clear prior to the sale. Ended up having to wait until general sale where all Friday and Saturday tix were sold out so we had to get Sunday passes. They claim this fan-verification hog-wash is to prevent scalping and gray sales and such but there were Groupon deals for single and 4-day passes at inflated prices! And the staff at check-in didn't even ask for ID to match the passes. The management of this event needs to get their ish together. read more

Has nerd and geek become mainstream? It would seem like it from Comic Con. Every year it has gotten bigger especially with the commercialization of comic super heroes on movies and television. This use to be for hardcore fans who come out each year to celebrate their individualities, favorite anime, comic book characters but as anything it seems to have come to an end. Now is all about the ghee wiz bang, lights, sounds. It has become the Times Square of where way too many baby strollers are cruising down the narrow crowded aisle in some case selling lots of cheap expensive trinkets or overly commercialized hype for new movies and big name video game houses. There are plenty of autograph signing for a steep price and sessions that would be interesting if I wanted to spend my whole day waiting in queue to see it especially the popular screenings. There are still the smaller comic sellers who actually sells comic books but those are seeming getting smaller and smaller every year I've gone. Is it still fun to see all the great cosplay. Sure but some feel like they are their solely for their Instagram purpose than a true fan dressing up as Ichigo Kurosaki. If you don't know who that is than those are the people now occupying space for true fans. Will I continue to go. Of course. It is still the one year where the inner geek comes out. I love comic books, video games and art, but there is no way the New York Comic Con can get a 5. Is it impossible? No. But there would have to be a bigger draw. The whole point of NYCC is to spend money really. The San Diego Comic Con has better panels, screenings and guests. Jacob K. Javits Center is also too small. I will say though, that this year was much better than when I went a few years back. I felt like they took notes. I wonder when they implemented the fixes. Getting in was much smoother (Keep in mind I went on a Sunday this year, so Saturday could still be a cluster****) and they didn't have an Anime section this year. I LOVE anime, but they put it in the basement corner the other year I went. They also used more space this time around for the Artists Alley. Smart. So imagine the year I went back in the day? Less space AND they had an Anime section. If you've never been to NYCC I suggest you go at least once. If you want to go on the most tame of days, go Sunday. People also discount things on Sunday to get them off the shelves...more money and less stuff to pack up when they get the boot. Also, NYCC happens every year...so save up now and get your mouse clicking finger ready. I find it funny when people miss the sale dates or don't have enough cashola. Are you serious??? I had a lot of fun, the line to enter was better run than in previous years, the Porto sans were better than the toilets inside the Javits Center itself. I admit I am not the biggest geek about all these different genres and stuff, but I do like certain super heroes, Harry Potter universe, and some other cult TV shows, so I had a really enjoyable time. It was sooooo crowded in some sections, but I'm not sure how that can be controlled better. read more

What can I say. There's 1,000,001 things to do there but you will wait online for everyone of them. If you do not mind crowds and overpriced everything and you need your pop culture fix then it's a must do. I've been going for a while so it's a little played out for me. I used to go before the marvel movie hype made nerdom mainstream. Pre 2008, you could actually walk around and chat with some comic writers and artists and they would actually do something for free. I still go now but only because I'm lucky to know a bunch of exhibitors and they throw me a pass. If they didn't I probably wouldn't go. It wouldn't surprise me if this eventually becomes an all week show. As of now it's spread out Wednesday through Sunday. I remember it used to just be Friday Saturday Sunday. read more

This convention has been growing bigger and stronger every year and now is only second to Comic Con San Diego, which is huge. Anyway, I 'm not really big on comic books but went out of curiosity with my partner, who is a big comic nut. I had a blast, they have all these adults in costumes, and it's much better than just a street carnival without all the drunks and police barricades. There''s still a sense of the industry event but to a pleasant degree. there are famous writers and film celebs and maybe the most fun I've encountered at the Javits Center yet. read more

I don't know if there is such thing rating a comic con. I was really disappointed this year because I was not able to get to any panel...even waiting on the line standing for 4 hours. I was disappointed along with the hundreds or possibly thousands of other fans waiting on line. People that stayed in the auditorium decided not to leave from 11am to ...who knows 6pm? They should come up with a better system to accommodate more people and force those that decide to stay in the auditorium to leave because it is not fair. I could've attended another panel if I wasn't waiting for the big event. I was sure that I was going to get in...but didn't. HOW DISAPPOINTING. I don't know if I will come back next year. It's just ridiculous. Don't sell that many tickets if you can't accommodate those that are staying on line for 4 hours. Seriously. read more

I know all the fans are probably going to hate me for saying this, but I think New York Comic Con is over rated. Too crowded. Too much body heat. It's hard to see Panels and Screenings because they cannot fit everyone who wants to attend them because seats are very limited compared to the huge amount of people who go to Comic Con. Comic Con is great to those who love to see sneak peaks on video games, TV shows and movies they adore. Not saying I don't adore them, but is spending $85 on a four day pass worth seeing sneak peaks? If it was my choice, I would wait and save myself the $85. As for the vendors, they are overpriced. Food is ridiculously expensive. On the bright side, Comic Con gives people a great excuse to dress up. It's interesting to see people dress up as different characters from a variety of different entertainment. Throughout the day you can go in and out of Jacob Javits Center as much as you want. Your ticket is an all day pass. I would have probably liked Comic Con more if my friend didn't make us wait six hours to see The Walking Dead cast in the Panels and Screenings room. I'm not against The Walking Dead in any way, I think it's an interesting show, but I wouldn't want to wait six hours for something like this, just so that we have our seat by the time the cast shows up (if we went to the panels & screenings room any later, we wouldn't be allowed in there due to the room being over crowded). Maybe I'm just not nerdy enough for this kind of thing. I might give Comic Con another chance next year considering Comic Con does something different every year. I want to love Comic Con, but I do not see why people are so hyped up about it. read more

I've both attended the con as a fan and worked a booth at NYCC. While most of it has been good experiences, loving the cosplay, the vendors and the culture there are some drawbacks. I've gone so many times in the past few years and have been to smaller cons (haven't made the pilgrimage to SDCC yet... someone wanna help me out?!) that I see what can be done better. NYCC is massive, and it's quickly outgrowing its space. I've heard mumblings that the Javits Center is looking to move out to LIC to expand. The aisles are quite small as they try to jam in as many vendors as possible. From a vendor standpoint, NYCC was pretty easy to work with, I worked at a booth, didn't own it, but when we had issues with our lead retrievals machines it was quickly remedied by NYCC's support team. The guy I worked for is older, and it wasn't a problem for him to have a company help him ship out his merchandise and product back to his hometown in Boston. Another thing, vendors work DAMN hard, please show them love & respect. I didn't sit the whole time I was working at the con. And then on Sunday night we had to break down the entire booth. That was a lot of heavy lifting, cutting my fingers on the packaging tape, and freaking out that we packages something wrong. As soon as NYCC ends it's an entire different world in the center. As a fan, NYCC is a dream. If you have the stamina to do all 4 days and participate in Super Week (also hosted by ReedPOP) do it! It's the highlight of my year. I did have a huge issue with the ticketing for panels this year. Being that I had a vendor pass I was able to get into the con early. I had Saturday off working the con and decided to stand in line for the Jessica Jones panel. I waited for 2 1/2 hours in line (and I was in the middle of it). There was only 1 person handing out wristbands. These lines are super wide. It began to bottleneck really badly. Right as I was 2 people away from finally getting a wristband, the guy tells us that he ran out and is going to get more. However, when he comes back he goes to the other side of the line and proceeds to hand out the remaining wristbands. When a bunch of us decided to wait to talk to the guy and question his methods, he would not speak to us at all, but threatened to have security call us. We wanted answers. Every other panel had more then 1 person handing out wristbands so there was no issue with bottle-necking. All in all I wasted a total of more than 3 hours of my morning on this. That's not even the best part, we found out the OVERFLOW line got wristbands before us. Meaning the people who got in line last minute. We were pretty enraged, specially after more than 3 hours. We knew this because someone i was standing with's husband came late and was in that line and he ended up getting a wristband. Suffice to say we were pissed. Tips for parents: Sunday is kids day. While there are events kids can go to each day of the panel, you will get the most out of it on the Sunday. Please go on the Sunday. Please. read more

This is the place where everyone can let their inner geek/nerd/superhero out! I was attending with my 9 yo daughter who is a huge Harry Potter Fan so I was initially a little concerned about what she might "see". There always seem to be a few attendees that want an excuse to dress scantily. It seemed that the most popular costume for women was "Harlequin". That being said there was some incredibly fun activities for the kids. You have to be very aggressive and wait in line but we were able to get the kids into the Padawan Light Saber training thanks to my bro-in-law. This was tons of fun even for the adults as they teach the kids under 12 how to use the "force" and light sabers. The family area was very low key with some room to roam but the exhibit area was insanely busy. Definitely hold on to your kids there! However what tons of fun. There is always something to see, buy and play with. There was also tons of freebies. However the amazing thing I found at the New York Comic Con was the camaraderie and they friendliness of the attendees. Everyone would let you take pictures with them and their home made costumes, some easily taking months to construct. Everyone was incredibly friendly. read more

So amazing and fun! There are booths and events for every person. You do not have to be obsessed with comics to enjoy it. There are so many wonderful pieces of art available, especially in artist alley. They have every type of item available that you can think of. They have a very large range of panels as well. There won't be any moment in which you are bored. I absolutely love the diversity within exhibitors and attendees. It surely gets extremely crowded; however no one is extremely rude and security aids in keeping crowds from idling in the middle of the aisles. They have food trucks around the area for the Con with a decent variety of food; thus, you do not necessarily have to leave the area to it. This is the 3rd time I've been to the con. And as much as I enjoy the event and the atmosphere there were something's that need tunning. Mainly the cosplay show on Saturday night. The event starts at 8 pm, alot of us were making the line at about 645. The problems are the following. we were sitting waiting for the time and at 7 pm they made us stand up to provide instructions. I was not aware you needed to be on your feet to listen. There were 2 people with no microphones trying to instruct 3 thousand people. It's a bit 'low budget' if you can follow me. It then took an entire hour to get into the theater. At about 20 mins the previous show ended. It all felt sloppy and poorly organized, we could have stood sitting on the floor the rest of the 40 minutes. This is being well planned yearly event that it is. This should have been better handled. read more

Lost a bet to a friend and had to go to Comicon... wait for it... as a blue power ranger. In hindsight, my friend definitely did me a favor. Comicon is simply a great place to nerd it out and well... nerd it out. This place is packed with vendors and things to do but I'm not sure it is worth going to for multiple days. One day was definitely enough for me. Leave the event to buy food. Food lines are crazy long here and the food is definitely overpriced. $4.50 for a Vitamin water? Really? Buy tickets early for next year and dress up however you want. I guarantee you won't have the craziest costume there. read more

It was just okay, I went one day and I pretty much saw everything I needed to see and passed on going back. NYCC also sent my tickets to the wrong address and did nothing to fix the situation at all which completely screwed everything up for us. I had a lot more fun at conventions in Cali than east coast. So far this years ticketing process is absolutely PAINFUL!!! IF they manage to prevent scalped tickets then it might have been worth it. Due to some glitch on their end my tickets have been "refunded". Multiple contacts with them and I am not totally sure I will be able to attend. I jumped through all the hoops. They really need to get their act together. Feeling like a trip to San Diego would be worth all the hassle. read more

I've managed to work in the last 2 New York Comic Con conventions at Jacob Javits Center. Getting paid to play is always better just paying to play I say. Dr. Seuss ain't got nada on me bro. I managed to dress up as a beloved cartoon character...SHHHH...but it was quite the space taker at the convention. This year however compared to 2012 was MUCH, MUCH more busy/cramped/claustrophobic/I think I am rubbing elbows with too many people. Not in a good way. With that being said each New York Comic Con is pushing towards what they have at San Diego's Comic Con but I doubt it would get to that magnitude. Still it is getting better and that is a good thing for Comic Con folks. The food selection at this place is something I would not test. The best thing I saw here to eat was probably from Starbucks. Yes, they had a Starbucks here. Bring your own water because well...$10 for a 20oz of Dasani can suck a fat one. Bring deodorant. I'm in a sweaty costume and I smelled better than some of the folks I "encountered"...EW. Bring money. This should have been number one if you intend to buy comic books, souvenirs, memorabilia, etc. Bring you cos-play game. And it better be your A game. Cameras be flashing and people be watching. No rachet attire please. Most importantly come have fun. Yes, do buy the 4 day because you would save money if you are someone like me who worked a day or 2 or 3 and still want a day to explore the grounds/ venues after work. Oh and buy these tickets EARLY. They sell out quick and you don't want to be that guy or girl who is trying to scalp badges day of. read more

Overdue Review , but a really epic time , all the effort and dedication and creativity that goes into the costumes makes it all worth it by itself. Its really great! One tip go with either a plan or a lots of money! There is a lot of cool fun stuff to buy , not anything you actually need, but always fun stuff and great art to buy . But if you not prepared to drop alot of money look at all the panels and stuff and make a plan , there isnt enough to keep you entertained if you come with no money for all that long if your gonna miss all the panels and events that would of interested you, your gonna be in alot of walking to so comfortable shoes are a must. read more

STAY FAR AWAY. It's way too crowded, and there's little to do. It's $50 to enter and then you're basically walking around booths that will only try to sell you things at inflated prices. There are no give-aways that you'll actually receive, other than a "limited edition poster" the size of an 8"x11" sheet of paper (even the 'poster' is a lie, it's a piece of paper). It's almost like being charged $50 to walk into a shopping mall. Panels are at capacity, and you can't get in. To get into a popular event you'll have to line up in the morning and wait around all day for something taking place in the afternoon hours later. Offsite events (yes, they have offsite events at MSG and Hammerstein ballroom) had lines stretching around multiple NYC blocks, several hours before the event. There is a line for everything including the bathroom. My friend waited 45 minutes in line to use the women's bathroom at the Javit's Center. Everything has an inflated price. A small iced-coffee at the Javit's Center Starbucks is $6.50. Food is too expensive. It costs $5 for bottled water. Large soda? $4.65. They were selling a set of 6 Voltron lapel pins, each the size of a quarter, for $75. I'm not joking or exaggerating (I wish I was). There is almost nowhere to charge your phone (there were lines for the one charging station I saw). There are lines for everything. Even "walking" around the booths is like waiting in a giant line; it's not really "walking" at all. You're packed front to back with people, moving along like cattle being stuffed into a train car to be sent for slaughter, and you're swept up by the current of moving bodies. It's horrible. Take that same $50 per person, and go somewhere fun where you can actually do something enjoyable other than wait in line. Be prepared to spend an additional $50-$100 to get an autograph or photo with any celebrity. No, you won't be able to see them without paying; they are behind large black curtains in the autograph/photo section which are designed to block your view so you can't take photos with your cellphone. You won't be allowed to go behind the curtain without paying. I got there with a friend in the morning, and we were inside the building at 10 AM. My friend and I were so disgusted by the event that we left and went to the movies at around 4 PM, even though we had planned to stay longer. There were panels we had originally wanted to see in the afternoon, but we couldn't get into them, we were told by security that panels were "at capacity" and then turned away, and then there were horrible lines everywhere. We had more fun at the movies and were glad we left. Side Note to the Organizers regarding lines: There is no reason there should be any lines for panels or any event. We're forced to sign up for a badge embedded with an RFID chip just to buy tickets, the badge is linked to your identity through "fan verification" (though I was never asked to verify my identity at the actual event), and they scan your badge when you enter and leave the Javits center. There is NO reason why you shouldn't be able to sign up for your schedule/panels in advance, online, to ensure you get a spot without waiting in line. Alternatively, there is even plain old "deli counter" technology that you could use (in person, take a numbered-ticket for this event, come back later, you're guaranteed a spot, etc.). Franchised-restaurants, using electronic buzzers in place of lines, are more organized than this event. If Disneyland, Universal Studios, other amusements parks, and even the Cheesecake Factory can all eliminate lines, then NY Comic Con should be able to as well. It's called fast-pass or "virtual queuing". Invest in the technology. There are ways to prevent abuse of a virtual queue (verify identity of ticket-holder with badges, limit a person to one virtual queue ticket per day, set aside a certain percentage of seating for virtual queue and some seating for people who just show up). This isn't new technology. No one should pay $50 to wait in line for hours. read more

This year's comic con was pretty okay in my book. I was slow to purchase tickets so I ended up with only Thursday tickets. Booooo. Next year I will be faster! Unfortunately, I didn't get to any panels. What I liked: Lots and lots of vendors! I got to meet Peter S. Beagle! Artist Alley was awesome! So much to see! The downsides? Okay, there were a couple. For one thing, on the website it said that the panels started at 10 am. Thinking the con started at 10 am, I woke up at 7 am to catch a train into the city so I could spend all day there with my boyfriend. We ended up in line...the guys who were organizing the line were RIDICULOUSLY rude to the point where I wanted to yell at them. They treated us like cattle. And we waited. And waited. After 11 am rolled on by, I got really worried because they weren't letting anyone in. So I checked the website. It still said 10-11 am for panels. Everyone around us was VERY confused as to why we weren't being let in, so it wasn't just us. People said, "Oh maybe they will let us in at noon." So basically, no one had any idea as to when the con started. Here it actually started at THREE PM. I found this out by going to the Comic Con Facebook page and skimming it for any information. Found a guy commented, 'hey it says 11 am for panels, but we're still waiting in line. Do we need a time machine?" and they responded that the panels were for professionals only and that it would start at 3 pm. Comic Con organizers, PLEASE be more, well...organized! People didn't know! Tickets aren't cheap. If you aren't into panels, you're paying to go shopping or to show off your costume. I would have also been grateful to have been given a schedule of happenings upon entering. I guess they just assume we'll get the info from our smart phones? Anyway, it was still fun and I'll go next year, I wish I hadn't woken up at 7 am to be disappointed. read more
