Their website shows a physical address in NYC. I was told by an agent that they are 100% digital. I asked about their address and was told it has now changed. I asked if they have offices there, they said something about only seeing people by appointment. I asked if I could do that, they gave me a number to call. They never answer, always voicemail. They never call back, only email. You are not allowed to view the apartments, nor do they have video viewings. They seem to have the appearance of a respectable company at first, but if you ask for more that emails and for standard photos of the apartments, you might find that they will disappear. The agent I dealt with was very nice at first. She gave me a few links and an application form. The company the application was for has several reviews stating they are reluctant to return security deposits, and they want your card info included in the application. That was not reassuring. If you ask the agent for more reassurance, they might insinuate you're being evasive because you must have dealt with that company before and they rejected you. Absolutely not. The service provided by New York Habitat, and especially by Nick Pugliese, was exceptional. What particularly struck me was how attentive and helpful Nick was, even through bumps in the road. There were some hiccups with the timing and location of the apartment I meant to lease, such that I ultimately didn't stay there--Nick worked diligently to secure a new tenant and get me my money back. Agent disappeared for 10 days just to tell me the apartment I was interested in was taken. I understand apartments get taken, that's fine. The clear lack of urgency to get anything done while completely ignoring my other backup option and criteria which I clearly stated was absolutely incredible though. Blaming the pure lack of communication and customer service on covid was the lamest thing I've ever heard. It took 10 days for a response to the my email with the criteria, but when I finally conveyed my disappointment, it only took 30 minutes to get a response. I tried to get another agent, but I got 0 response. I'd recommend just about anyone else I've had a yelp account for years, and haven't written a review ever despite all sorts of good and bad experiences, but this one I had to actually write about. Unprofessional company . The agent was misleading, when I had questions concerning the apartment and my security deposit no one was available and I was being transferred from person to person for weeks or was told that I would get a call back and of course no one would call back .. There is a mandatory monthy cleaning fee of 50.00 , I was also charged 450.00 for the application fee when other companies are charging 100.00. I wouldn't reccomend this company to ANYONE. read more

After my most recent experience with NYhabitat, I think I'll be going somewhere else now and in the future. I was looking for an apartment for my boss and his wife, along with their cat, while their apartment underwent renovations. On their website, I found a nice apartment and requested more information on it. I received an email a little while later from Christophe Pourquier stating it was no longer available. Instead, he offered me another apartment that was $4,000 more expensive per month. I told him it was out of the budget and we weren't interested. However, after speaking with the insurance company that will be covering their stay, it actually turned out that it would be right at the top of the budget. I emailed him back asking if he had anymore information on the apartment and if we could perhaps see it. A little while later, before he even responded, we received an email from the insurance company of approved apartments. That very same apartment happened to be listed. The insurance company told us they could even get a better rate for it than I had found and that, instead of reimbursing us for all the payments/fees, they would be dealing with the rental process themselves and paying them directly. Thus, making everything much easier during this stressful time. At this point, I emailed Christophe and told him that, unfortunately, if we did go for that apartment it would have to be through the insurance company. I told him that it simply made the most sense to do that for us. What did he do? He started telling me off and accusing me of trying to "bypass" him and literally asked "who's going to be paying my fees?" I'm sorry? Did I miss the part where we were obligated to pay you thousands of dollars for sending me one or two emails about an apartment? He continued telling me that I obviously did not know he had a "close personal relationship with the owner" who was apparently "shocked" at what I had "tried to do". He even said he'd be forwarding my emails to his CEO. At which point, I was furious. What kind of an agent does this? Who starts trying to blacklist people for not choosing to purchase an apartment through them after all? ESPECIALLY under these specific circumstances. I had not dragged him out to view apartments fifty times in one week and then told him we'd be paying someone else. I only received one MAYBE TWO emails from him about the place. There was no hard work put in. I responded by telling him that our choosing to go through the insurance company was by no means a personal insult and it's not my fault he chose to take it that way. We were not obligated to go through him either way and it made the most sense for us to have the insurance company pay directly instead of going through this hassle. It was not my fault the apartment showed up on their vendor list as well. He obviously lacked logic and sensibility, being that he was unable to understand WHY we weren't renting from him, and was extremely pompous. His response? I was presumptuous because I called him "Chris" instead of "Christophe". Well, if that's your only response to what I said, then you must know how wrong you are. And FYI, calling someone a name informally, especially in this type of setting, is meant to establish a friendly/trusting relationship. But I guess you can't get off your high horse long enough to see that. Definitely won't be looking into that apartment or any apartment from them again. Don't need to be berated and talked down to by some woefully entitled real estate agent who thinks 5 minutes of their time is worth thousands of dollars. read more

So many similar names for housing agencies... it gets confusing I must say! I've used NY Habitat for an international booking and a local search. They seem to cater towards short stays for European clientele, but it doesn't mean they don't accommodate locals for longer terms. I actually trust them more than some NYC brokers I've dealt with or searching for a roommate on CL... Their website is very easy to navigate. I used NYH for a deal in London that I found myself (so I probably deserved the broker's fee) and it was a std fee for under 1month-stay, which was less than the CL scam that prompted me to discover NYH. Their automatic communication system (via the www) is pretty efficient -- once you input your specs, they reply to you and set you up with an agent. And when you meet with an agent, they show you a bunch of listings, and their program/database is full of information! I was quite impressed. Rather than visiting a whole bunch of apartments over 2 hours after a 2-min intro (as some brokers do it), I welcomed this low-key, click and visit system. They had a whole bunch of pictures and factoids about each owner/prospective roomie, it was more comprehensive than most brokers, and the viewings were as good as your typical preliminary visits. When I asked, they were very upfront about their fees (standard $300 for stays under 1 mo.; a % of rent if your length of stay is under 6 months; 1month's rent for stays 1 year and +). They seem to maintain relations with good owners who have listed with them previously, and I like their feedback system with the clients -- after every rental, they try to get feedback from the tenant. Also, every 3 years, an owner w/ a listing is visited by a different agent to assess the condition of the place as compared to the ad. I didn't get very far this time around with NYH, but I would def use them again if I need help with sublets, etc. What I also liked is that had I chose an arrangement and visited the place/roomie and I were to not like the choice for any reason, I would be asked to provide them with my reason so that they can know -- I thought this was very constructive and honest on their part! While I'd prefer to right a review after an actual pair-up with a roommate or a sublet, I felt pretty comfortable with the initial process. Just someone who wanted to find a place. When you go apartment or room hunting make sure you have a good agent to help you out in this matter. I filled out the request form on the site as if it were something along the lines of a tax form (for accuracy) and while at it I left comments stating my family/pets would not be involved/ with me in my renting and multiple questions to be answered. The agent that got back to me Id say was terrible, Beatrice Clairay Wetcher needs a revamp on her communication skills and job duties training. None of my questions answered and clearly did not read the comments left, all I got was sorry nothing for you - essentially due to the fact I put a family/pets in the request. I tried to ask if anything pertained to me because I did not originally know why (many listings on the site work for me) and this agent emails back saying no room share wants a family/pets. If you were to read the whole request you would see what I wrote at the end and because that is representative of the company it was just wrong. I even attempted to clarify with a reply because I get miscommunication happens, but no response and the way the whole interaction was that is not how you get people to rent (etc.) I like the listings on the site as I see other reviewers had good experiences with other agents thats what I would have honestly liked. read more

After being mislead by this company via Craigslist, I am continued to be harassed by Beatrice Clairay Wetcher claiming I am ignoring her emails. I mistakenly responded to two of their adverts on Craigslist that appeared to be post by the actual residents. I promptly and politely responded to both emails explaining I had no interest in working with a broker. She continues to email me day and night saying she has yet to hear back from me after I promptly continue to tell her to leave me alone. I reached out to call her and received a voicemail recording for a different phone number stating nothing about the fact she is a broker. I went to the New York Habitat website and called them directly. I was forward to the "quality assurance" department where I was grilled with questions. Apparently their system has more than one person with my first name in it, and they feel it is my responsibility to help them sort out their disorganized records. The woman pleaded with me since she does not have access to Beatrice's email and it is clear no one is reviewing emails that end up in their spam or junk folders. Just another example of unnecessary leaching by broker's in New York City's rental market targeting potential lease holders of low cost rental units. You have no business harassing people or driving up the cost of entry lesser priced units. There are plenty of multi-million dollar units in this city available for purchase, please go focus on "helping" those people locate their new home and secure a mortgage and leave renters ALONE! read more

My experience with this company was great from start to finish. The chat on the website was so helpful and the person - Anna - who helped me initially was so efficient and helped me with everything I needed. I was cut off while writing my most recent review but I think you all get the point - if you've read this in it's entirety and still decide to work with NY Habitat then you definitely cant say you weren't warned. On a side note - recently realized the squatters staying out in the living room are dealing drugs out of the apartment. I was woken up by someone repeatedly buzzing the doorbell - one of the squatters answers and then an argument ensued about showing up at the apartment. I also want to state that when I signed the agreement to apartment share - it specifically stated that Waly(the scumbag primary tenant) would be the only other person living in the place. I contacted NY Habitat about this and... you guessed it! They did nothing and said nothing. There answer was "maybe you should give 30 days notice" WHICH I DID. I was supposed to be here for year but this place was so terrible that I gave notice after 4 months! NY Habitat doesn't screen their landlords or primary tenants! They take some glossy pics - swindle you out of an "agent fee" and then tell you to fuck off after they place you in a hell hole. Also I want to tell you about the neighborhood. A few years ago when I was in college - Harlem was up And coming. You could see all the right people moving in and all the shit slowly being flushed out. Well that's done now - a lot of the progress made has reversed. Harlem still has some beautiful tree lined brownstone streets but it's mostly filthy trash everywhere prowled by crack head after crackhead. But this street 132nd between Lenox and 5th has to be one of the worst. It is not safe. As soon as the sun goes down the drug dealers come out to service their strung out customers. Hey it's NYC and look I'm from LA - this isn't new to me. It's the obviousness of it - they feel no need to even try to hide it... especially on this block. So if NYC is new to you and you're not from a city like LA - stay away from this place bc it's too much even for me. I really hope these reviews help the next person walk away from NY Habitat. I just wrapped up the process of signing a lease in Paris for my study abroad program next year and I am so thankful for New York Habitat. My agent, Jean-Philippe Blaise was absolutely wonderful! He was very quick to respond to any questions or concerns I had and helped me book a great studio apartment in Paris. The process was simple, quick, and took a lot of stress off of me as looking for an apartment in a foreign country can be a bit daunting. There is an agency fee (reservation fee) so just be aware of that but this would go for any agency you use while booking an apartment or living place. Overall, I definitely recommend this company as I do not know how I would have found such a great place without them. read more

After having worked with some rental agencies in Paris, where I was looking for an apartment, this one was an unpleasant surprise. It seemed like they have an answer service with one agent who keeps her phone off. We were looking to rent an apartment for one month in Paris. Somehow their agency fee was 40% of the total rental, and not the customary 5%. When I mentioned that to her, she never realized how high her figure was and was surprised by the percentage. It was clear that she made that agency fee up. Then, you pay directly to the owner, including deposit, which was 100% of the rental, which she later got reduced to 50% of the total rental. What's the point of the agency if I have to pay directly to the owner? Seems like a high opportunity for scams. So that they operate as a Finder rather than an Agent. And, payments must be made by travelers checks. I'm not even sure where you get those checks from these days, but then you are essentially shipping cash overseas to an unknown "owner." Then, this agent said these owners are reliable because she rented one particular apartment 53 times. She made that number up, again. It is highly unlikely that this long stay apartment could have been rented so many times. These are monthly or annual rentals, not daily! Overall, I did not feel comfortable working with this so-called "agency." read more

I have to preface this review by stating I've stayed at my share of dumps in Manhattan trying to save a buck or two. After a while it became a game to guess what ungodly thing I would encounter on my next stay in the city. Needless to say when I decided to give Habitat a go I very wary of what I was getting myself into. At first, the whole concept just seemed sketchy: You find an apartment on the Web site that some person is offering to rent for the weekend -- and it's at least $75-$100 cheaper than even the dumps I used to stay in and I *don't* have to share a bathroom? and that's it? There's got to be a catch, I told myself. However, as it turns out the company is pretty awesome. We found a studio that seemed nice judging by the pictures and the write-up -- it was right in Chelsea -- and about an hour after sending in my request I heard back from a Habitat contact. He answered all my questions, sent me a PDF of the contract, I signed it, they charged me the deposit -- and then I prayed for the best. And in the end everything went off without a hitch. When we got into the city that weekend, we met up with the renter -- a really nice guy -- he gave us the keys, we in turn gave him the remaining deposit, and we were walking around LES within the hour. The apartment was clean and not at all sketchy and the fact we met up with the renter of the apartment made it more comfortable. Plus it made it feel like a home-away-from home, staying in someone's apartment. I'm definitely using Habitat, again, the next time I head to the city for a weekend. read more

I was referred here by a friend when I posted on Facebook that I was looking for a reasonable hotel in NY. Outside of the oxymoron comments, a friend mentioned he used Habitat NY to rent a room in an apartment. That seemed like a good idea. I started on the website and search around a lot. It was pretty easy to navigate. You can limit the search by area, by price, period of rental - pretty much what you need. They have everything from monthlies to dailies (though most have minimums). The site also has enough picture to give you a good idea of the place and lots of written information to answer the questions you may have renting. You can check the maps to see where the place is located in the city and check how close you are to the metro. What else do you need? I found a couple of places and contacted the agency. Their response time was very fast and they were really great about providing the additional info I need. I ended up with a bed and breakfast type place in Chelsea and actually did end up renting with them. The place was a little nicer than the photos. The owners were friendly and gave us directions each morning. I had never used a service like this, so I actually made a hotel reservation in case this did not work out. I was all to happy to cancel the hotel (which would have cost us double the rent of the room we rented and would have been half the size). Good service and saved money. After I moved there I just told him I don't like the neighbourhood(it was in Times Square so it was super crowded all the time and everything was super expensive in the area but the studio was pretty nice anyway), he found me another studio in the Upper West Side for a 0 dollar fee. Before I found Nyhabitat and agent Christophe - it was a problem for me to move in Manhattan or Downtown Brooklyn because I am a foreigner - so most apts have lots of requirements, asking about credit score, proofs of income etc, but that's hard for me, cause I am new in US. But Christophe from NYhabitat was very helpful and adviced me a better variant among ones that I've chosen - I am satisfied. And everything was easy. Without any problems. In NYC it's hard to find a short term lease that is fully furnished, NY habitat had multiple listings available throughout the city. Beth, at NY habitat helped us find a great location, close to work at a decent price. In regards to other reviews, NY Habitat are there to find you an apartment, not to facilitate issues between you and the landlord. If there is an issue upon arrival, they will help you relocate. Craigslist and gypsy housing might seem tempting with low rents, but if it is too good to be true it usually is. Bottom line is they are worth their fee, cheaper then airbnb and legit. read more

This review is well overdue but now I'm living in the States and relying quite heavily on Yelp I thought I would start doing my bit to share my experiences to benefit others. Last year Tamara from NY Habitat helped us find a wonderful furnished apartment in New York for 4 months. We were in New Zealand at the time and she (& NY Habitat) seemed to be very comfortable and experienced in dealing with customers from overseas - especially when it came to paying and proving that we were going to be trusthworthy tenants. We had many many emails back and forward explaining our requirements and Tamara was really great at answering our questions and sending photos because of course we couldn't view a place and decide if it was right. After the initial fee payment and lease was signed we were introduced to the landlord and we even got to meet her in LA on our way to New York so that she could put her mind at rest that we would look after her apartment and furnishings. From that point on we only dealt with the owner - the handover was seamless and clear and I'm sure she appreciated NY Habitat providing her with such good tenants :) read more

NY Habitat was excellent, and I will certainly use them for future apartment searches. My agent, Bernard, was INCREDIBLE--I was working with a few agents because I needed to find an apartment to sublet in a short time frame, and he outshone the other agents BY FAR. He was always very quick to respond, whether it was midnight or a weekend, he listened to all my many requirements, and somehow managed to actually give me choices where other firms had told me I was looking for the impossible!! I was also very nervous going into this sublet agreement, as I did not have the opportunity to see the apartment before signing and putting down the deposit. However, the pictures of the apartment were accurate, and everything else that was described to me about the building and the area was 100% true. Also, the apartment owner they set me up with was wonderful to work with, and never tried to squeeze an extra penny out of me, like many property owners will try to do! I would not only recommend Bernard and NY Habitat to anyone, but I will be absolutely be referring friends there directly in the future!! read more

And to correct New York Habitat, my comments haven't been taken seriously by the company from the beginning. I was brushed away as quickly and firmly as possible when I communicated in May that the apartment I rented from you at high cost was a den of mold and dust and ants. The last communication I had with anyone from your office was a week ago on June 6, 2013, and all that person said was that he was revisiting the apartment that I stayed in. He said this in tandem with the statement that New York Habitat has absolutely no responsibility for the cleanliness of the apartments it rents out, which is something that another agent was very clear in communicating to me, as if a mantra of New York Habitat. So, everything that was communicated to me, directly and indirectly, was New York Habitat wants to see the dirty apartment in person so that the agents can reiterate to me that dirty apartments/your customers' experience has nothing to do with the scope of your business. If New York Habitat is suddenly saying now that someone from a Quality Assurance Department will be in touch with me, that's news and that's appreciated. I'm also surprised to hear that the pictures of the apartment posted on my blog don't meet New York Habitat's standards since I was told that cleanliness isn't their problem. No one cared about my experience when I called New York Habitat shortly after arriving at the Paris apartment in May, but New York Habitat does seem to suddenly care that I'm sharing my experience online now. These guys were truly awful. My agent, Carole, didn't really respond to my emails and was setting us up with a fraudulent landlord. She didn't care though as she was just waiting to get the agency fee. When I asked her to put my roommate on the lease, she put him on the invoice, not the lease. When I called her up and told her my name, she had no idea who I was. Unreal. The cherry on top, when I tell her that we weren't no longer interested in the potentially fraudulent apartment, she said, "I hope you will find a good place to stay in NYC." WTF? read more

I used NY Habitat to find temporary housing when I first moved to NYC. Since I ended up liking my apartment, I feel it is only fair I give them more than one star, but I did not enjoy my interaction with NY Habitat at all. I thought they were extremely unprofessional and did not provide much of a service given the amount they charged. The agent (Johan) I worked with was extremely unhelpful. I would ask him questions about listings and he wouldn't answer them, instead showing me new listings. He also did not listen to what I had to say (repeatedly showing me listing in neighborhoods I specifically said I did not want to live in) and I got the impression the only thing he cared about was placing me as quickly as possible (regardless of the fit) so he could collect his commission. In the end, I picked my own place off their website and basically paid them a lot of money for the phone number of the landlord. My initial interaction did not exactly leave me wowed, but I forgot about it quickly. What really irked me was after my stay I was asked to give feedback on their service. In my review I mentioned that I was a little put off by the fact that in addition to the brokerage fee, I was charged a $20 "processing fee" (when I misstated the charge initially as $30, they made sure to send a scanned document proving otherwise!) They responded telling me that it was not money they kept, but rather a cost of doing a credit card transaction (fine, but you don't send me invoices for your rent, lunch, and every other cost of doing business). When I indicated that if that were the case, I would have been happy to have written a check or paid them in some other manner they told me that this would have been an option. The reality is that I was specifically told by the agent to pay with a credit card and it was never indicated to me that there were additional charges specifically for using a credit card. They of course insisted this was not the case . . . In any event, I'm sure you could do much worse in NYC and if you can afford the fee, it probably is more reliable than craigslist. Ny Habitat at least gives the impression of trying to be non-sleazy (but if when you followup with customers you leave previously content customers annoyed, perhaps you need to rethink your approach . . .) read more

If I could give them zero stars, I would. I unfortunately have used they're "services" if you can call it that twice out of desperation for a place to live in NYC. The rooms are terrible. They're unclean, have mice, broken toilets and refrigerators, and being homeless for a few months would have been better. I tried to get the agency's attention and complain about their low standards, but nothing gets resolved. I asked for a refund of my agency fees, which I thought was extremely reasonable given the horrendous experiences, but they refuses and said they would give me a discount the next time I use their services. No chance in hell that I'm going to use them and give them my money again for a cheap discount. BEWARE! You may catch something in one of these listings! read more

Pay a lot of money for nothing. Basically all they do is sending you the lease contract by email. New York Habitat employees are not even able to advise you honestly on the safety of an area (and most of the time apartments are in not so good areas unless you pay a ton of money). Not able to give you any piece advice... literally nothing... On the other hand very pushy when it's about pressuring you to make a decision. Also they are thieves! Do not give any credit card information before being sure you'll get an appartment, they will charge you even when no contract has been signed by both parties. I tried to use NYHabitat to find short-term housing in New York City, and it ended up being a huge waste of time. I expressed interest in a few places and had an agent respond to me however after I responded to her, she did not reply for days and when she finally wrote it was only to say that the apartment I wanted had just been rented to someone else. Every time I wrote an e-mail, I had to wait days for a response, and I was repeatedly asked questions that were answered and provided in my application. The one time I went into the office, the office itself was a mess and the experience was entirely unhelpful as the woman who helped me had clearly never looked at my application before. Utter waste of time, terrible customer service, extremely unprofessional. I'm very pleased that I found this out before signing any type of contract/lease with NYHabitat. read more

They don't deserve not even one star. So, I contacted the agency, and all went well. But when I said that I want to rent the place from them, they stopped reponding to my emails. So rude! Do not bother trying to go through them. They are not worth your money! read more

If I could, I would rate them zero stars so far. Me and my friends (a group of four) were looking for an apartment for six months, so out of desperation and lack of other possibilities, we turned to NY Habitat - a choice I would NOT recommend! The service is terrible, simply because it basically doesn't exist. You pay an awful lot of money for finding your apartment online by yourself, correcting your contract yourself, making sure they process your contract yourself (they did not for almost four weeks until we asked why the Apartment was still up for rent!) and so on. So, if you are out of Options, go for it, but be prepared to fixing your brokers mistakes! read more
