A little over two years ago my mom fostered for street sauvy dog rescue again but, this time it was me who fell in love.When I walked into moms for a surprise visit I saw a very nervous GSD hiding in his crate. I asked mom if I could take him on a walk to get him some enrichment. He was shy and very cautious on the leash, walked with me and was following my lead, he couldn't have been better on that walk. The second I got home I knew I wanted to take him home, so I filled out an application and once approved got him home. I was 19 at the time and Kirby was my first ever adult purchase! Lol! I am now 21 and he is 3. The dog I brought home is not longer shy, scared of tvs, fearful of anything nor is he afraid of car rides. I now have a very BRAVE, adventurous, strong willed/ minded, Sweet, caring, gentle, and affectionate beast of a boy . After some testing (for the obvious) we found out he has a fair amount of Belgian Mal. Had I not grown up around dogs my whole life he wouldn't have been the right fit as I wouldn't know how to handle him. That is the only thing that may not have been the greatest as he was listed as only a GSD which is true however, some people are not educated well enough for this breed. Belgians are just a whole different breed, I mean this dog climbs trees and perches on couches like a bird if that gives you an idea. We will be adopting from them again in a few years I'm sure. Our girls are getting older and he will need a companion. The process to apply was easy, Barb. Met up with me during my school lunch hour to fill out applications for him, she made the whole process from start to finish a breeze. He came with his leash, harness and collar (collar after two years and lots of adventures is still in good condition) plus some food and a toy. He also came with flea meds and lots of preventative medication and was already fixed! WOOT WOOT! He DID have kennel cough when we first brought him home but it was a very mild case that we got taken care of promptly after we found out, the older girls did not catch it. He also was transported from Texas so I already knew something like that could have been possibility . In some of the photos he may have long nails, only as of the last six months has he let anyone trim his nails. This took a lot of training and positive reinforcement to get here. During this time he went on lots of walks to keep them as filed as possible.

The organization is supported by volunteers (I am currently fostering a kitty cat) who provide love, food and shelter until they are placed in a permanent home. Or, if you want to sign up to volunteer, I'm sure they would be happy to have a few more loving foster parents to help out with all the homeless pets.

She helped me adopt my puppy Rickey, formerly known as Mickey Mouse and he is just a love. The entire process was smooth and uncomplicated. I was nervous about the home visit at first but Shanae put us at ease right away when she arrived and brought Ricky for his meet and greet. I knew the minute I met him he was meant to be our baby and Shanae agreed, the hard part was letting him go until the adoption event when we could adopt him. But that gave us time to puppy proof our house and get ready for him to come home. They have a pretty fool proof method so that people don't have reasons to return their adopted puppies or dogs due to impulse adoptions. So that one week waiting period was hard on us, but I totally understand the reason for it and agree with the reasons for. All the puppies and dogs come vaccinated and spayed or neutered and have all health issues tended to and are made known to the adopters so they/we can continue care. This is a fantastic rescue agency and is a great cause to donate to for people looking to donate to a place that truly helps animals, they are 501C3 and all donations are tax deductible. I've always known I've wanted a little chi chi of my own but waited years and years until I knew I was in a place to care for a pet the way I wanted to and the way a sweet pup should be cared for. So once I graduated from law school and had been working as an attorney a few years, the time was right. Not only is Shanae the most animal-knowledgeable person I know, she is also the most incredible rescuer I know. These animals are her heart and soul. She makes ZERO profit financially from this rescue (it's literally a nonprofit org), the only "profit" she is looking for is that each little angel that finds its way to her ends up in its forever home with a safe, wonderful family. Having my pup has changed my life. I feel like I have found my soulmate in my puppy and that we were always meant to find each other and be in each other's lives. She is my joy, my comfort, my emotional support, my little cuddle, my confidante, my fur-child my everything, especially after the past year we've all lived through. And I owe it all to Shanae. Any animal coming to Shanae's rescue is literally coming to a safe house. Every animal is vaccinated and fixed/spayed, micro-chipped and loved before they arrive at their forever homes. There are so many other organizations out there claiming to be "rescues", but the "rescuers" are really just trying to turn a profit by selling animals. Sadie's Safehouse stands out because Shanae's one and only goal is to get these properly-cared for pups into forever homes where they will continue to be properly cared for. Shanae has seen it all - abuse, people returning animals after a week, a month, years, etc. She vets these adoption applications based on her firsthand personal knowledge and caretaking of these animals and what types of homes they will best fit in with. Nobody knows them better than she does, so if your application gets denied, you should know there is reasonable and important justification behind it. Shanae has answered every question and addressed every concern (even my overprotective puppy mom ones) I've ever asked, every time. She's calmed my nerves and been the best support in the world for a first time puppy mommy, even a year after I've adopted my girl. To anyone looking to buy a puppy or older dog from Pride & Joy Pups, please read about our…read moreexperience, so you know the kind of breeder you are dealing with and the potential problems you may experience with your new dog. We lost our cherished Havanese, Oscar, in December 2021 and weren't expecting the hole he would leave in our hearts and lives. In February 2022, we began putting out feelers about adopting a young dog (not a puppy) that would already be potty-trained and maybe have learned basic leash skills. We are both seniors and didn't want a puppy, as they require so much energy to train. When we contacted Bryan, he said he had two 1-year-old Havanese females that were too small for his breeding program that he needed to rehome. He said he wanted to place them together since they were very attached to one another. We were told they used a doggy door and potty pads inside the house, without issue. Bryan said that they were "timid." Bryan also said that the dogs were "free feeders," meaning that food was always available, and they helped themselves when they were hungry. When we visited the dogs, we quickly fell in love with them and decided to purchase them on the spot. After we got them home, we noticed that they were both so thin that their bones could easily be felt beneath their skin. Whenever we offered food, they ate it as quickly as possible. It quickly became apparent that neither dog was fully potty-trained in any way. We used potty pads inside the house (we don't have a doggy door), and although they would use the pads occasionally, there continued to be daily accidents on blankets, the tile floor, carpet, etc. For this reason, we have had to restrict them to our kitchen and dining room areas to avoid accidents on our carpet and furniture. Both dogs were extremely skittish with us for weeks and would cringe when we bent down to pick them up--as if they had been hit or were kept in a very isolated place at the breeder's home. It was apparent that they were not properly socialized. We could not get a straight answer from Bryan about whether the dogs were really a year old (they exhibited behavior more like those of puppies), and whether he had ever taken the dogs to be evaluated by a vet. Our vet saw both dogs two weeks after we got them and told us that they were both underweight (so much for being "free feeders"), and that they both had orthopedic problems (luxating patellae and carpal valgus). They may require surgical intervention as they age. Our vet also said that the dogs looked like Havanese mixes, but not purebred Havanese. We didn't receive any paperwork from Bryan that would confirm the purebred status of our dogs. When we let Bryan know what our vet told us, he was quite defensive and insinuated that our vet was looking for problems to get as much money out of us as possible. This is an excerpt from the email reply we received from him: I'm not sure what to say to you. The vets can always find lists of potential problems that would require lifelong vet visits and surgeries, racking up astronomical vet bills. Sounds like a good business model. Bryan never answered our question about whether the dogs had ever seen a vet. He was also unable to provide proof of their age or lineage. Any reputable breeder would gladly offer information on all those things. We have now had our girls four months and love them dearly, but they are much more work than we thought we were getting into--specifically, the potty-training issues that they both have. Our guess is that Bryan knew the dogs had orthopedic issues and didn't want them for his breeding program for that reason. Not being familiar with dogs, we didn't notice it when we met them. Keeping quiet about their potential orthopedic issues is not something an ethical breeder would do. Please don't make the mistake we made by buying from this kind of backyard breeder who washes his hands of his dogs and his clients after he's made a sale. It's been a tremendously stressful and disappointing experience.
