Today marks the second time I have adopted a dachshund from ODR. My first time was 15 years ago and today I adopted another. They have been super helpful in transacting this adoption. Obviously, I have been a fan of this organization for years and fully support the work that they do. Jenell helped my adopt my Ollie so many years ago and he was a delight. My husband and I are the ideal cantidates for the strict restrictions they place on adoption -- both of us work from home full time, have a fenced in yard and were applying for a female to join the male dachshund in our family. We did a meet and greet, and brought her home! She came with a basket of blankets and toys, and we continue checked in often with photo updates. I've continued to support this rescue, donating toys that I make, bidding on auction items and donating to special case dachshund that they need funding for. The woman who runs this rescue denied me on the fact that I work outside the home and my address is on Terwilliger Blvd. I will say that the volunteers that I dealt with were really amazing. Willing to come out and have a home visit and assess my situation and report back. I would have been fine with her criteria had she taken the time to know anything at all about me. I have heard from several parties that have adopted from her that the guidelines are crazy. It seems to me that being sanctimonious and bossy is far more important to her than actually placing dogs in homes that will be permanent, safe and secure. I had a recent - 2/2017 - and very good experience with these folks. I lost my dog/great friend after 15 years so it took a while to decide to replace him. We had two dogs, the other is a Tibetan Spaniel from a breeder. We figured that any new dog we got would be a rescue and that this time we would not go to a breeder. I love Doxies, always have, but I have never owned one. I figured now would be the time to get a rescue. Found ODR on the web and contacted them when I saw a dog that might fill the bill. I talked to one of their volunteers and filled out the application. Within just a couple of days, they paid a visit to my house and I now have a new friend. I had forgotton what I was missing since the spaniel was bonded to my wife. Gets along great with the other dog and he really seems happy to be here. I have read the other reviews and can only tell you that some of them are not consistent with what I experienced. I'm not calling them out because I wasn't there in their shoes, but the two people that I dealt with were very nice and the process was organized and smooth. read more

My Husband and I have Dachshunds in our household way before we met the "director" of ODR. We adopted a couple of doxies from ODR even though we thought the ODR's criteria is more strict than in Russia. We even fostered several doxies from ODR. When one of the fosters became ill (which the vet stated not by us), the "director" blamed us for causing the illness and went on a rampage which we tried to smooth things out with her-the director has no workable people skills and questionable "dogs" skills-think about that?! We cut off our support from ODR and continued successfully working with ex-ODRs in finding homes for all the rescued dachshunds and their canine friends. If you think Portland is weird, you need to meet the director. Avoid any business with them. read more

The ODR adoption process was a great experience for us. We were impressed with the thoroughness of the process that serves to make sure these beautiful Dachshunds are being placed in just the right homes. We would feel this way even if we had not been chosen to adopt our baby. The adoption fee might seem high to some, but in our case, the fee didn't cover even half of what this organization paid to make sure our baby had all his medical needs met before he was ready to be adopted. The amount of time, devotion and love that goes into getting the Dachshunds ready to go to their forever homes is amazing. I have experience with rescue dogs, doxies, as well as other breeds. I exercise not because I need to go for a run but because my dog does. I applied to adopt one of the dogs at the rescue and all I got in return was no communication, very cold short winded answers, and a feeling that Jenell does not have much interest in placing the dogs with good homes. I understand the importance of having criteria, but each dog is different just as each situation is different. All dogs have special needs that's not specific to dachshunds, all dogs are capable of having anxiety post trauma. What needs to be addressed is the ability to work with the dog to earn its trust and better its future and quality of life. I wanted my current dog (who's previous best friend was a doxie) to meet and this opportunity was completely shut down, I wasn't even able to meet the dog before I was given the cold shoulder and short responses on why I'm not a good candidate. These people are crazy and have no compassion. Seems like their outlook is assuming everyone else doesn't know how to love and take care of previously mistreated animals. Pretty sad. read more

I have rescued several dogs in the past few years; one was old and very ill with a heart condition but I loved him and made his last few months as comfortable as I could. He knew I loved him. I thought that was what rescue operations were all about finding deserving dogs good homes with loving "parents". Apparently that is not the purpose of the Oregon Dachshund Rescue, I would suggest you find a more deserving facility to donate your time and money. If every dog had a loving parent like Nora we would not need Rescue facilities. Unfortunately there are baby's out there who still need homes and loving families. No other rescue around the country charges what they do to "Rescue" a Doxie! The boy I was after had little to no issues. A "beat me to it " craigslist find! This review comes from several years back. Please keep in mind before you read this: I have ample experience with dachshunds. My parents have had dachshunds for years and years, and I've had one now for 11 years. When applying I told them I work from home 3 out of 5 days a week, so the dog would only have 2 days a week when I was working out of the home. I was turned down, they explained that some dachshunds have separation anxiety. Really? Do all of your dogs currently have separation anxiety? You don't have any possible dogs that would fit that situation, considering I'm home 5 out of the 7 days a week? Also, they turned me down because I don't have a fenced yard. I exercise my dachshund EVERY SINGLE DAY, I take her on walks to the park, throw her toy, and make sure she has plenty of stimulation. I fully realize they are an active dog, but dachshunds do fine as long as you get them out enough and make sure they get their exercise. Sure, there might be some dogs that don't fit my lifestyle, but they weren't even willing to work with me and look at the dogs that might. There were several dogs listed in their rescue that sounded like they would fit in with me and my current dachshund. Their criteria is WAY too strict. It's too bad, one of their dogs could have gone to a home with lots of dachshund experience, and that is full of love and consistency. It just all struck me as being bossy, snobby, and unwilling to consider my experience and situation. I understand they are trying to make sure the dogs go to good homes but being overly controlling about it eventually isn't helpful to the dogs. read more

This rescue organization is terrible and I will tell you exactly why. I was a vet tech and veterinary hospital manager for years (I am now in real estate but still volunteer with doxies) and have tons of experience specifically with doxies. My husband is a police officer who works at night and is home/asleep all day (dachshunds live for sleeping and blankets, right?!) while I work my day job. We take long walks, frequent a local dog park, get their teeth professionally cleaned yearly, keep up with flea/heart worm meds, etc. We also have a group of friends with several dogs, so our dogs never have to be boarded if we go out of town - they go with their "extended family/pack". We tried to adopt a second doxie from ODR since we figured we'd be shoe-ins, what with our already owning/having experience with the breed AND the fact that someone is literally home all the time, but we got rejected. Why? Because of our senior,indoor, lazy cat who literally could not give two craps about dogs. They wouldn't even do a home visit to check us out. We ended up adopting our second dachshund from another organization that also had similar reservations about our cat, which were overcome after our interview and home inspection. I would seriously love to see see who they actually approve for adoption. Again, terrible organization with ridiculous criteria. AVOID!!! read more

Whew! Animal welfare and rescue is tough work and highly emotive, especially for those who give their free time, energy and love to those animals day in and day out. I have been a volunteer for Oregon Dachshund Rescue, Inc. for the past 2 years. I sought ODR, Inc. out when I moved back to the PNW from CA where I had been living with two Dachshunds and their owner. I missed my little Doxie friends (one of whom was a rescue) so much but I wasn't in a position to adopt one...I was living with my brother and his family and had no place of my own. All volunteer organizations generally need volunteers and many will accept anyone who walks in the door. I was so impressed that the Director and ODR, Inc. weren't like that. They reviewed my application, interviewed me and made sure I had the time, energy and willingness to commit to the cause I was signing up for. They also allowed me to receive training on the tasks they needed my help with and understand my limited availability (I live in North Central Washington and volunteer remotely most of the time now). I am also always impressed with the level of commitment from ALL the volunteers at ODR, Inc. and how much time, energy and love each one of them gives to ensure that each little Dachshund finds their own perfect, loving forever home. It may not be a perfect system, but considering the lives that many of these little dogs have already lived, I truly believe it is a good one. I am honored to volunteer with an organization that attracts people with such passion and commitment to the lives and well being of other beings. read more

I am a dachshund lover and love all animals. Inquired about a dachshund and called Oregon dachshund rescue. They did reply to my email but their tone is not friendly and super controlling. Think these people ASSume everyone is bad and not worthy of adopting a dachshund. Spoke with them on the phone and got the same vibe. Sort of like - who are you? suspicious, and it's like you have to prove your 'worthiness' to adopt one of their dogs. I agree with a prior review here that said - Seems like they're not very interested in finding good homes for their dachshunds. Often rescues go overboard and you'll find this mentality. True in this case. Will not even consider adopting same sex gender - really ? My female dachshund's best friend of her life was another female. Recently moved to a farm but need to prove I have a fenced yard. Like if don't, I somehow am an irresponsible scum bag Everything in life is better on an individual basis. Not dictated by strict controlling rules. Oregon dachshund rescue - you left a bad taste in my mouth . and if you're OK with denying your dachshunds wonderful life experiences with loving owners because of your suspicious attitude and strict ridiculous rules then so be it. Did anyone think of the fact that Obies volunteer mom flew a morbidly obese dog in the cargo area of a plane when he is in a unstable condition?? No wonder Jenell wants him in her care. ODR does great things for the dachshunds! I have adopted a dachshund from ODR and kept a relationship with them as a dachshund owner. Jenell is very supportive and has helped me when I have needed medical help for my dog and other advise as my dog is anxious. This organization does more with less to stretch their donations to rescue, vet and foster the number of doxies that they save. I have not adopted from them but my husband and I do regularly donate to help their mission to provide these dogs a better life (and sometimes providing them actual life.) I only have a handful of causes I give to after careful research. This is one of them. I am not part of ODR nor a volunteer. I am in awe of what they do and the number of volunteers who expend many hours and much of their own money. Reading some of the negative reviews, I would hope that consideration be given to the fact that ODR always tries to make decisions in the best interest of the animals they rescue. Do they always 100% get it right? Well, I know none of us do! But they are doing what they believe is right for the dog and circumstances. If this isn't the organization some people wish to interact with, I hope they look at the thousands of other rescues out there to find one they can support. Thank you ODR for your good work.
