Oddly enough I prefered their former Government Center location layout. The new location for this branch is nice, albiet cramped- Too many people, obese midwestern tourists on one side, and gaggles of Japanese buisnesmen on the other. The store needs a better way of displaying the new comics, as they seem to be bent and creased when put in the current rack setup. I did have a question about some cds I was after, and the clerks couldn't be bothered to help me, as they were emersed in a conversation with each other- I asked 3 times where to find a certian cd, and they would point and say 'OVER THERE!". Contrast with the Harvard Square branch staff, who are always very helpfull. I'm a fan of Newbury Comics, but Faneuil Hall branch is my least favorite branch- i'll stick to the one in Harvard Square. read more

FUCKYEAHCOMICS!!!! Okay, and not just comics, but DVDs, CDs, toys, tchotchkes, the works. It's like the toy and apartment section of Urban Outfitters had a baby with Tower Records and adopted by Hot Topic. Without a really heavy-handed corporate sleaziness to it, mind you, which is very important. You always just kind of want to look at something a little more. I know, totally a tourist trap.... but it's a two story building on a popular market street that sells comics, records, Stussy clothing, Keith Haring duffle bags and assorted novelties. If you're not being pretentious it's great that places like this exist... As for the vinyl, they carry new releases and reissued pressings. I was able to figure a copy of The Smiths "Queen is Dead" 12" that has been sold out of pretty much every shop I've been to on the East Coast. The staff were helpful and engaging while being knowledgeable and busy. Apparently their other locations carry a larger assortment of LP's but I never made it to them on my short trip to Beantown. read more

I had reviewed this place previously in its Government Center form, where I gave it 3, then 2 stars. Here's my 2-star review from before. Having gone there after my previous review, it still stands: I still don't like this location. There isn't much there per se, and being in the Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market area, it's tough to even get to the store, then fight through the throngs to find something good Now, my previous review, complete with Liv Tyler references :) - Remember "Empire Records"? You know, the mid-90s film about a bunch of people working at a record store, and then they find out that they're going to turn into a "Record Town" or something because that one guy gambled away everything and now the guy from "Without A Trace" can't buy the place from that other guy? This Newbury Comics (and its move to Quincy Market) is kind of like the doomsday scenario in that film (turning into Record Town). But in this version, Newbury's a much larger store system, so it's a little bit less on the conformity side, and more on the "wide, open spaces with popular stuff" side, and the only place you'll find Liv Tyler is in the DVD for Armageddon. Basically, I have to call FAIL on this place. I don't know what the Quincy Market area does to places, but I'm not liking the feel of this Newbury: when I think of Newbury Comics, I think of rows of CDs grouped together, with knowledgeable people at the front. This just seems so much more... I don't know, sterile. It feels way too much like an FYE, with the popular stuff downstairs, and then upstairs being a wide open space of a few rows, with random knick-knacks spread throughout. I don't get the design of the place, and the move has definitely hurt their stock (though they did have that massive sale to get rid of a lot of stuff). Is it the tourism, the fact it's in Quincy Market? I don't know, but it's definitely a less enjoyable experience than when this Newbury's was next to that gym Also, I know they just moved, but the video game selection is horrid. It's in a sad little wall in the upstairs section of the store, just kind of sitting there. At most there seem to be some X-Box and Wii, but that's about it. On the plus side (and the reason it's not a 1 star), the prices are still relatively decent, particularly on CDs. In comparison to the awful FYE, Newbury (and even this Newbury) can kick some butt. Maybe this place needs some time. Right now though, I'll go to Harvard Square or Newbury St for my musical-related wares. At least there I'm not wading through tourists so I can go look at large spaces. read more

I found what I wanted at this location, but I was treated like shit. Full complaint below. -- While shopping, my three friends and I were all but interrogated about a belt they clearly suspected us of damaging or shoplifting. Two of us were perusing the belts, and my roommate bent down and picked up a cannabis-patterned belt from the floor and observed that it didn't have a buckle, and hung it over the others. I chose a black belt for myself and held it with the three CDs I planned on purchasing and the four of us started to look at the sticker display beside the belts. A moment later one of the employees (a man in a baseball cap and full-sleeve tattoos) picked up the cannabis-patterned belt and looked at us and said, 'so can we have the buckle back?' at which point my roommate informed him that it had been on the ground and she had simply picked it up. He glared at her a few moments, and went off, finding what I assumed was one of the assistant managers, and returned, pointing at us (as we continued to peruse the stickers) and saying, audibly, 'those girls.' At which point we were again asked about the damaged belt, and we repeated that we had found it on the ground, already damaged. Feeling quite unwanted now, we proceeded to the front desk, and I passed the same employee, offered him a smile, and received only another glare. At the counter, I asked if they took a certain credit card, received a grunting 'yes', and offered my card in payment. I waited as he rang me up, and he threw the card down on the counter top when he finished swiping it, and my roommate informed me, once we finally got outside, that he had watched me leave, waiting for the alarm to go off. I was at this location last week, where my friends and I bought probably fifty dollars worth of merchandise, and my roommate was there just four days ago, and bought another fifty on her own. I spent almost forty, and while I know in comparison to 'big shoppers' that isn't much, I still feel as though I and my roommates were completely slapped in the face over picking up a piece of damaged merchandise from the ground. I don't think I will be returning anytime soon. I have never in my life felt so unwelcome at a retail location. read more

Probably the best deal in the Faneuil Hall area. So I admit, yes I'm a tourist, that's why I ended up here. After walking through Quincy Market, watching all the yahoos buy their lobster rolls and lamb wraps (oops! I mean "roll-ups"! Geez, New England is weird.) First, a bit of personal context between me and Newbury Comics. You see, ever since I discovered Amazon, I haven't been able to resist buying the used CDs on Amazon from their Marketplace sellers. Half of the time, the CDs came from, you guessed it: "newbury_comics". They had great prices and I usually bought two or three at a time to save on shipping, and that was possible because they had such diverse stock that you could look up two completely unrelated CDs and there was a pretty decent chance that newbury_comics would have them both. So I was eager to find out if their in-store variety was as diverse and as modestly priced as their online offering. Of course, it isn't quite as amazing. It does cost money to pay people to run a brick and mortar store from 9 to 5 and I understand that. But it is still very good. My girlfriend got a couple very new CDs between $7 and $10 in price. I ran through their whole jazz selection and made off with 3 CDs (Bill Evans and Cannonball Adderley x2) for just $16. It's smaller than Amoeba Records back home, but there's also more Newbury Comics stores. And I kind of like the vibe of Newbury more than Amoeba (usually it's just a bleak looking warehouse area with rows and rows of albums for the true record-thumbing addicts.) As others have mentioned, they have funky knick knacks, bags, Justin Bieber cutouts (I kid you not; I thought the guy followed me from the SF YEE just 3 days prior!) Too bad Newbury Comics hasn't expanded to the West Coast. I would be a faithful patron if they did. :) P.S. This location is indeed small and cramped, but I don't mind. I just wanted to acknowledge other people who downrated this place for that reason and really? I do what I want! Hmph. read more

While their selection was not much to write home about (we did enjoy the Cock a Doodle pad and the grow your own male stripper toy), the staff was super friendly and really tried to help us, so thanks! Not the best selection. I went looking for some Specials CDs and they had Zilch. Nada. Zero. Their Genesis collection was poor as well...same with Elvis Costello, Yes, I could go on and on. I think if you want some more run-of-the-mill music you can find it here, or of the artists they do carry, most of their popular albums can be found. Close to my office so it's great to wander over to during the middle of a long workday to grab new releases, etc. Probably the poorest used selection of any of the Newbury Comics stores...just not enough room! Other than that, small store but decent enough due to how accessible to the downtown/financial district it is. Why can't they open a bigger one over here because I LOVE Newbury Comics... They also used to do a lot of in-stores (I saw Snow Patrol and G.Love here a few years ago) but don't seem to do those anymore. read more

I come to this Newbury Comics location for one reason: their large selection of Criterion Collection DVDs, which includes cheaper used copies. They don't have a lot of the latter, but you see so few Criterion DVDs in Used sections that I've started to think there's some secret rule that says you're not supposed to resell them -- you're actually supposed to pass them on to your descendants as treasured heirlooms, with the stipulation that you'll harass said relatives from beyond the grave if they ever even THINK of getting rid of your worn-out first edition of "Seven Samurai." At any rate, there's a commitment to art film at Newbury Comics that I really appreciate. They seem to be on par with Strawberries with regard to other genres, although as an anime fan, I love that they sometimes have first volume + artbox combos, which can be hard to find. My only gripe (other than the name being kind of a misnomer at this point) is that this location often feels crowded. If you're planning to go, shoot for off-peak hours. read more

This review pertains to this location of NC- not the company. I love the company. It's where I shop for my music. And thank god for Newbury, right?? This location, however, is the worst. I've been a couple of times for in-store performances so I really wasn't focused on the store and its products. I always had other, closer locations where I bought my music. But yesterday, I went to the Faneuil Hall store out of convenience and I realized I never need to return. 90% of this store is crap. Just silly merchandise. Lots of toys, clothing, etc. I had to actively search out the music and when I found it, it was ALL crammed into a tiny pass-through room on the second floor. All of the music is in 4-5 shelving units. ALL OF IT. I was there on Record Store Day and they were running a promotion of buy 2 used, get 1 free. I have a running list of records to buy and I had to struggle to find a third used. Also on the second floor- DVDs and comic books. And a Vans shoes section. But me- I'm interested in music. That's why I shop at Newbury. Occasionally, I also pick up some silly little gifty things, but I'm mostly there for the music. This location is severely lacking in that department. This place is so much fun! My friend Miguel d. and I were browsing around Faneuil Hall before dinner when we stumbled upon this lovely little gem. I was blown away by the music and DVD collection they have stored upstairs, and I took home quite a few quality used CDs for $5.99 and less. They also had a nice collection of novelty gifts available, and I ended up picking up some of those too. A great place to spend an hour getting lost in. Luckily that was all the time I had because if I had been in there just a minute or two more, I might have ended up buying the whole store. read more

At this Newbury Comics there are actually comics! Not just a small rack in the corner, but a whole room dedicated to it. Sure this isn't a comic book shop, but this Newbury Comics has the biggest section I have ever seen. This place is two floors of awesome. It has a good selection of books on both floors, toys, pins, hats, DVDs and CDs. The prices here are competitive to the FYE that is in Downtown. The staff is pretty great. Once I bought a used CD and walked back to my office, when I went to open it I realized that there was no disc inside. Rather upset, I rushed back to the store (in the pouring rain in Boston where everything floods!) and made my complaint. The person at the register didn't hassle me about it -- which I was surprised about -- and replaced it with a new CD. They did make me pay the difference, but that's better than nothing I guess, by the time I walked back to work, my clothes were soaked through my jacket. Of course now if I make the ill decision to pick up a used CD (in the rain), I will open it in front of them before I buy it, but I digress. This is definitely my favorite Newbury Comics location. read more

The five stars are for helping to make my and my wife's Christmas. We moved back to Greater Boston not too long ago, and my wife's copy of "A Charlie Brown Christmas", which she bought only last year, went missing. I called around--apparently the North Market store had the LAST copy for sale in all of Greater Boston! They put it on hold, and though I had to wait a long time to get to the counter, it was well worth it. Took it right home, we watched it that night. Oh... and it's great to see a local music store there. I remember when there was still a Sam Goody Musicland (I think where American Eagle is now). Was never impressed with Goody's. But I've been a pretty loyal NC shopper for a long time. read more

Found some *amazing* markdowns with older graphic novels - some quality hard-back stuff from as little as $2 - only problem was fitting them all in my suitcase back to Australia. OMG OMG OMG. I love this store! Frikkin sweet vinyl, and Cd's assloads of DVDs. I didn't know what to do in there, plus it was not expensive at all which surprised me. They have a lot of fun kitcky accessories and a ton of silly gag gifts. The music collection was pretty impressive though, lots of good stuff to browse through. This is my favorite location of this local chain. Unlike the stores in Burlington and Danvers (never been to the other one in Braintree) they do not have a huge selection of DVDs. That is the only complaint I can honestly make regarding this spot. The staff are unpretentious and helpful. They have a ton of choices for unique gifts, and the laughs are plenty when browsing through this stuff. I always stop in here when in this section of downtown Boston. read more

There used to be a great 3$ goldmine section of titles.. now there is just nothing. From the looks of the place in 2012 it looks like the whole business can't afford the rent. The variety of merchandise in this Newbury Comics is ridiculous, kind of overwhelming the way it's set up but if you're not in a rush and can spend the time to look around you find some great stuff! Even if you're not looking for anything other than some new (or used) CD's, chances are you find a random gift for a friend or family member. I dig on any place that is eclectic, knows their stuff, and doesn't end up being too corporate. The key is they know their stuff. You walk in, and it looks like a kitch haven, but there's a lot of space, and a lot of good stuff hiding in nooks and crannies there. I recommend going in if you have time to kill, and a little room to pack a little something in your bag. I'd love to actually check out some of the other locations, as I think the tourist crowd keeps them a little more standard than their other spots, but I like the vibe, and I'll go back again. read more

Quiet disclaimer here: I've been shopping at NC since...well, back in da day. When there was one as in 1 location, the original storefront on...Newbury Street. Somewhere in a closet in a box is a pile of 45 RPM records - black vinyl discs with grooves, kiddos - by Joy Division/Buzzcocks/Gang of Four/The Jam..the good stuff. Can't let those babies go..even though I haven't had a record playa in eons. I like this location. It's close to me for one, and has a groovy selection, and the people who work there have always been very helpful. It's nice going in w/out anything particular in mind and walk out with some used - and always good quality - discs like anthologies and movies you just...happened upon. New releases are always discounted for a time and they'll let you order something if'n you don't see it. Good little foreign movie section, and used blue ray too at prices that r nice. After accumulating late fees for redbox i was so excited to find newbury comics! I currently have over 200 dvds and id say a good amount has been bought through here. This review is for the dvds although they sell cds, and cool nicknacks(including an awesome pare of shoes i bought.) Cons-Most dvds are $4 or more(i know thats not a lot but CEX has some for $1.50, although not always in perfect condition) There cheaper "used" selection is becoming less and less and sometimes its not even cheaper then buying new at target(example:most disney dvds(lion king $19+) Pros- You can find new movies cheaper then regular store(example:The help is $15) Movies are also usually in great condition sometimes not even used. They also have great deals on specialty packs, and tv series. The staff is friendly and helpful and the dvds are displayed pretty organized so its not overwhelming. Tips-Check to see if there is a used sticker on the dvd you are buying, they are always cheaper, also if there are multiples of one movie look at them all because sometimes one can be less sometimes up to $5 bucks for the exact same movie. Over all a great place to go and get good deals on movies specially if your a collector on a budget. read more
