This is what Harvard Square used to be. Small businesses owned by real people with interesting employees who are allowed to express their personalities. I miss that place and time. Anyhoo. Back to December 2021 when the Square is mostly banks, chain restaurants, or store fronts under construction, The Million Year Picnic is one of only a handful of authentic mom and pop shops remaining. You walk through a shared hallway into a basement to the comic collectors dream store. No it is not clean and organized. Yes there are thousands of treasures to be unearthed. If you are actually looking for something specific and not just browsing the employees are happy to assist. This is a fantastic place to find a gift for a tween or a teen or even an adult who really enjoys a good dystopian novel cum graphic novel.

Great old-school indie comic shop, that actually stocks lots of comics. The shelves are full of comics, the boxes on the shelves are full of comics and the displays are full of comics that have been collected into graphic novels. You'll find tons of backlist here and old issues. The selection is great with tons of bestselling and cult favorite titles. The store is in the basement level under (approx) the Verizon store in Harvard Square. You'll notice the window displays at ground level as you walk by.

I was wandering through Cambridge, thinking that my comics shopping had to happen at those famous Newbury stores, when I found this. It's located in a basement and it's tiny and fully stocked of lots of comics, but it's breathable and clean, if you're worried about asthma. The toys are fine but happily 90% of the location are shelves FULL of comics, the way it should be. I got everything I was looking for and spent a little fortune here, but left satisfied. The lady at the counter was very helpful and she obviously knows a lot about comics. My only complaint is it needs more "world" comics, as the store is probably 80% American material, and the rest, stuff from the U.K. Also, sales and discounts would be awesome.

I said Yes and he then gave me their quick spiel. From other reviews it looks like 20% off isn't new and has been a thing for a very long time. I didn't find, in general, their prices to be too bad. A few books maybe but they're smack in the middle of the city in a high tent area and their selection of pretty much everything is great, do slightly higher prices are understandable. Highly suggest a visit for current books, back issues, slabs, and I think lots of gaming stuff as well (I didn't pay attention to their non-comic stuff). It was actually fun for me.

(The prices were a little high to begin with so the sale made them more regular). The display comic books had cool identifiers like the first appearance of Hawkeye, for example. They were valued higher because of these specifics. Even those were 20% off today. My husband's only critique was that some of the long boxes were packed too tight such that he would've had to pull out multiple comic books just to be able to search through the box. He says he would've bought more if there were about 15 fewer issues per long box. Come check it out!

I usually only come into these stores with my husband because he's the nerd but lemme tell ya, even I saw a few things that I'd like to have. Fortunately, for my pocket book and for my carry-on, my husband kept his cool and just bought a few small things that he hasn't seen in any of the shops where we live. He was super excited to check everything out and get things he can't get at home and I was lucky it was all small things. Why 4 stars? The place is upkept well but it kind of smells musty and weird in here. The employees are kind of meh, not very helpful or friendly. Also, pricing is a bit high, comparatively speaking, so the value is a bit low, but I do understand this place in a tourist zone, so I get it.

Parking is difficult but manageable, in terms of street metered or two parking spots with less than half a block . A large selection on three floors , you will definitely find something. Staff is friendly and helpful, just ask away .
