Comicopia is an amazing comic book store full of the latest new releases from Marvel, DC, Image, as well as tons of independent books. Their new releases are organized well, and they have a staggering selection of new books for a shop with such a small footprint. They also have an extensive selection of US trade paperbacks, as well as a nice little bargain area with collected individual issues. If you're into manga, you owe it to yourself to stop in and check out their offerings, which span floor to ceiling from the front of the store to the back of the store, and go way deeper down the rabbit hole than you'll find in a mainstream store. I picked up all six volumes of a wacky new manga, Golosseum, on my last visit and received a discount since I bought multiple volumes of a series in one purchase, which was quite nice. When I've visited, staff has been polite and helpful. The shop is clean and is clearly run by someone who loves comics first and foremost. If you're looking for the latest Pop vinyl figures, t-shirts, etc., go to Newbury Comics, or another pop culture shop. If you're in Boston and are looking for a place to buy the latest comics or manga, Comicopia is your spot. read more

I am way behind in giving this place a review, but after going through my list of comic book stores to visit, this place was somewhere I would definitely return. Rarely do you find places that stick in your mind, but when we visited the area, this place was friendly and had a great selection of books. I just remember thinking that if I lived here, this would be my comic book store. That is pretty much what I look for in every comic book store I visit. Is this the kind of place that I would frequent? If the answer is yes it likely has good service, a good selection, and owners who actually care about their customers. I wasn't too impressed with this comic store when I last visited Boston. The organization wasn't very inviting and they didn't have some relatively new Marvel issues I wanted to pick up for my girlfriend. They did, however, have a very large selection of Manga. So if that's your thing, you'll be at home in Comicopia. read more

Damn straight I read comic books. They remind me of when I was young and the internet hadn't been invented so these were the best thing you could get to learn about chicks, other than your mom's purloined Victoria's Secret catalogs. We moved when I was like 13 and when we moved my bed we found this huge stack of Victoria's Secret catalogs I'd hidden under there. My mom thought it was hilarious. I did not. And that's why I married my wife: because her proportions are completely implausible, just like a comic book character. Sometimes I'm all hey, would you mind dressing up like Power Girl and kinda swooping around a little? And she's like no, I don't wear leather because I'm a dirty vegetarian hippie. And I'm like darn. Actually the only reason I still read X-Men is because I'm afraid I'll stop reading them right before the issue where they finally kill that twerp Gambit, and I don't want to miss that. As soon as they kill Gambit, I'm gonna read nothing but Proust from then on. Fucking Gambit. Here's what I like about Comicopia: Matt (the owner) and everyone else who works there is really nice, and Matt remembers my name even though I'm not in there all that often. He's really good with names. And a while back I told him that if a really good comic book comes out he should just put it in my stack without bothering to ask me, and as a result I now read Ex Machina, which is awesome. It's about if the mayor of New York was a crazy superhero who could talk to guns. Shut up, it's awesome. And like Bonnie said, the music is pretty dependably cool. Oh, and you can adjust your pull list via email which is nice. The point is, it's a nice neighborhood store where the people know you and you can stop in, chat for a couple minutes and pick up your comics. That's good stuff. If only they carried Victoria's Secret magazines too, it would be perfect. read more

These guys are one of my major role models. Disclaimer: I just opened Hub Comics, in Union Square, Somerville. Matt, the owner, is a very kind and helpful guy. I always loved this shop's selection. They have the best selection of indie and self-published stuff in the city, as well as an amazing manga selection and just about every graphic novel ever published, it seems. Their organization of the graphic novels (alpha by author along the left wall) kind of hid them from me somehow, but once they pointed them out, it was obvious and a great browsing experience. One of my favorite things there is the "Buy one, get three free" shelf. There are lots of books there that are less popular. Some are crap, but some are gems waiting to be found. There's always interesting reading to be had. He hires very knowledgeable, hip and friendly staff, and the place is well organized, if a little limited in space. For example, they put all the new stuff on the back wall -- this includes new-release comics, manga, trades, and even adult stuff on the top shelves. The staff has their picks, as well, which is always cool. (I plan to do that at my shop soon.) All in all, if you're looking for a comic shop in Boston, you can't go wrong with Comicopia. Edit August 1, 2009: Congratulations are in order for Comicopia being named one of the four international finalists for the Eisner Awards' "Spirit of Comics Retailing" award. Comicopia is an amazing store. Located in the scenic garden level of a building on Comm Ave, the store is packed to the gills with comic booky goodness. If there's a comic book they don't stock, I don't know what it is. They have odd French series along with a sizeable manga collection. They also have an adult section, which I swear I never look at. DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW are all covered here, along with smaller presses and even some zines. The staff is friendly, like everyone else says. My only problem with the store is that organizationally it baffles me. They organize the graphic novels alpha by author, which is fine if you know who writes everything, but I can't remember who writes every series I want to read. Perhaps this makes me a bad person, but I really just want to be able to find the book I'm looking for and not spend five minutes looking for it. read more

Warning: Biased Review: why? Because i'm a yaoi junkie. I can't review this place on their comic. It looked like they had a great selection of other stuff, but really, I came for the yaoi. NO WHERE have I ever found a place that has this much English yaoi. Not to mention yaoi from a range of publishers. I was like a kid in a candy store. Oh and I should also mention that they dress as superheros and particapte in the pride parade ever year. For that alone you should check them out. read more

I will admit that these days I'm not that into current comics like I was 6 years ago when I was a freshman in college in Boston. At that time I was and lived near Fenway and had a friend who went to BU, and was a comic fan, that told me about this place. This place is awesome. I used to go all the time picking out comics and checking out the toys, posters, tshirts, graphic novels, magazines, and more. The past couple of years I got busy and distant myself from comics, sadly, but would always make a trek to this place every couple of months as a reminder. The staff was always helpful, more so the people that worked when I first started since I interacted with them more, but have always been friendly with me since. Even though I don't currently live in Boston anymore anytime I come back to visit it will be on my list of places to stop by. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I came here when I needed my comic fix but I was too crunched for time to go to MYP. I don't regret it at all! This is probably my new comic store of choice! This place is bright, orderly, and well stocked and the staff - oh god I could marry every single one of them. They have such cute girls who work there! And they're so impossibly friendly and knowledgeable it's fantastic! They have a huge manga selection too. This is a fantastic place to pick up your trades and spend some time with people who love comics as much as you do. read more

Smallish store with your basic stuff, although nothing special. Mostly trade paperbacks and manga. No toys, action figures, T-shirts, novelties or collectibles (ok, a few). That's a disappointment. As a positive, they are focused, so they have a ton of comics, a lot of manga, and a big selection of graphic novels. If that's your thing, this is a solid four stars. (FYI, I asked - as a customer - to use the bathroom, and was told absolutely not. Obviously, they HAVE one, it's just that YOU can't use it. That's just rude.) read more

This comic book store had a great selection, including of independent and small press comics, at least the last time I was there. But since they have really annoying, limited hours I can never seem to get there anymore. I'm not sure when they're open on the weekend, but it doesn't seem to coincide with hours that most people are awake and walking about. Ah well. Maybe I'll make it back there some time. It doesn't help that they're in an area of Boston that's not really attached to an urban neigborhood where one might be browsing or visiting for some other reason. read more

I don't read a whole lot of comics these days, and as I mentioned in another review MYP tends to win my favor. But Comicopia seems to have a slightly larger selection than MYP, especially when it comes to oversized books. The sales girl was hypomanically enthusiastic about suggesting stuff to me once I asked her to, which is a good thing... Why not 5 stars? Well, I hate to say it, but they don't carry any back issues of Guardians of the Galaxy. When I am in Boston (once a year) i try to at least browse this place looking through the magnificent selection of manga and comics. This year was no different. I came by as it was closing, but it is still very impressive. I didn't buy anything but it's good to know this place still is a very good place to buy comics and other nerd-related items. Comicopia rocks!! We live in the neighborhood and i get in there with my 2 boys quite often. The store is clean, organized and well stocked. The staff is quite good with my boys and has been very good at reading them and what they might be interested in. Every suggestion has ended up a winner so far. Tiny looking store with a hand-painted sign...stuffed wall to wall with a great selection of back issues, manga and graphic novels. Unfortunately for me, the manga section was totally packed up for anime Boston, but the extremely helpful young gentleman working there more than helped me pick out a few volumes of interest. Super-duper-omg shout outs to you, sir. "Chew" is just as amazing as promised. I devoured the volumes at record speeds. As a girl who outright fled the comic book scene after the shop I grew up with closed, I thank you comicopia for letting me feel welcome and helped without being asked if I was "looking to buy something for my boyfriend." :/ And thank you for putting "Locke and key" and "chew" into my greedy little paws. read more

My favorite comic shop in Boston and Cambridge. Great selection of graphic novels, all your regular marvel/dc releases, decent local artist selections... but the big + is the employees. Head on over during a rainy day and chat them up about your favorite comic... They have an order option where they hold your comics for you and you get a slight discount, but you need to be signed onto 7 a month? not 100% sure about that, but ask them about details. What makes this shop different from the rest is how clean/well layed out it is. The music is usually pretty chill, and the costumers are relatively nice as well. Ohh yeah, they don't (usually) charge for variants (shakes fist at Newbury Comics). read more

During the months when I'm in Boston, there is no store that I would rather take the trip to every Wednesday for new comic book day. Comicopia not only has great selections, staff and pricing, but is also right in the heart of my hometown of Boston. To me, no trip to Boston is complete without stopping in Comicopia. I'm not really a fan of Anime/ Manga, but if I was, Comicopia also has that covered. Not only do they have an extraordinary number of comics and graphic novels, but they also have the largest selection of Manga I've ever seen in a store of this size. All in all, Comicopia is a great experience for comic lovers and enthusiasts and I would highly recommend it to hardcore comic buffs, and newcomers alike. read more

Great store... I don't buy comics that often but when I do 99 times out of 100 I go here to make my purchase; and have since nearly 1993!! (that's a long time, now that I think about it) The staff has ALWAYS been friendly and helpful, sometimes downright funny! More times than not they have the little oddball book I am looking for and, of course, they have the big-name books too. From "X-men" to "Blade of the Immortal", "Daisy Kutter" to "Why I Hate Saturn" I have found it here... read more

I went into Comicopia for the first time a few months ago, with a bit of hesitation. I always feel a 'Holier than Thou' vibe from the Alpha Geeks of the comic world, especially when I'm on their turf, but not here. I walked in and was politely told of a sale they were having (20% off everything, 25% off Manga.) in an informative but not overly rehearsed speech, as if to say "Hey, you're new here... lemme save you a couple bucks!" The organizational system was a little tricky at first, though I was mainly browsing. After becoming frustrated, I swallowed my pride and asked. Not only was I helped with locating the item, but he informed me that they'd be re-releasing the whole series soon and that I might want to wait. Friendly, knowledgeable, and showing some actual consideration? Needless to say, I'll be doing all my comic (sorry, Graphic Novel) shopping here. read more

I know very little about comic books, but back in the day, my friends all loved Comicopia. I'd go with them, and the store was always fun and the people nice. So when I found out that there are Sons of Anarchy comics, I knew right where to go. Dan, the manager, was extremely helpful in figuring out all of the different series and collections - which I had been totally confused about. Ordering was easy, Matt helped me over the phone. And when I went to pick up my order, the store looked amazing, and Dan and the young woman working were fantastic! What an excellent experience, all the way through. They do have some great selections of all the comic publishers pretty well oragnized and easy to find. The cashiers however are a little meh, they just seem uptight and rude at times. I absolutely love the 24cent section and have completely cleaned them out of their DC stock. I asked them if they would be putting more dc cokics in the section and all they said was " we refill it if we think it neede refilling" They don't have the nucest attitudes and really aren't the most helpful. Don't get me wrong, they do have comics and a wide selection of titles as well as a huge selection of graphic novels. But unless you're a fan who has a complete collection and don't need a single back issue of anything, then this isn't the comic store for you. read more

I did not have a bad experience at Comicopia but left disappointed. The store is nice, on the small side but they maximize space for their inventory. The young woman behind the counter was friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately for me, I found out that they do not carry back issues past 6 months. I was discouraged as I've read that this is one of the better comic shops in the greater Boston area. Also, being near Kenmore Sq. parking is near impossible without paying. Bottom line, if you want the latest comics the selection appeared to me excellent but for anything else it's not worth the trip. read more

one of the better comic book shops around. haven't been visited in a while. it's a small shop so you won't find too many old back issues. you'll find some of the stuff 1-2 years back, but don't expect to find uncanny x-men #1 or anything 30 years back. they used to have a pretty descent looking chick working there a few years back, but she no longer works there or else that would balance out the back issue problem and bump it up to 5 stars. read more

Disclaimer up front: I go into Comicopia (or any other comic store) for pretty much one reason -- to try to get the latest Usagi Yojimbo, plus however many back issues I'm missing. Comicopia rocks my world because the proprietor always knows the current state of Usagi. Since I have no reason to believe that he's a Usagi fanatic like me, I'm extrapolating from that that he probably has a pretty good fix on whatever your favorite comic is too. Easily Boston's best destination for manga fans. Comicopia isn't just another comic shop with some manga in the back -- it's a comic shop that caters to manga fans. Strongest selling point: selection. Every Wednesday, Comicopia has all the latest releases from manga publishers both large (Viz, Tokyopop, Del Rey, DMP) and small (Drama Queen, Vertical, Broccoli, etc.), sometimes a week in advance of the official release date. Their library of back titles is second to none, with one bookcase that runs almost the entire length of the store, two smaller ones near the front with mostly shounen manga, and special shelves for (an abundance of) yaoi/BL and hentai. (The latter are displayed a bit less obviously, but you can find them.) On very few occasions have I gone in and not found exactly what I was looking for, and if Comicopia didn't have it, it usually didn't turn up at Borders, Tokyo Kid, or Million Year Picnic, either. The magazine counter near the front carries several anime/manga magazines including Newtype USA, Shoujo Beat, Shounen Jump, and Protoculture Addicts. They've even started stocking more Japanese snacks, including several varieties of Pocky (and not just the standard chocolate & strawberry, either). The only things Comicopia doesn't have a lot of are DVDs and secondary merchandise (Naruto headbands and the like), but they absolutely excel at the area they've chosen to focus on. The experience of visiting Comicopia complements the stellar selection. The staff gives great recommendations (I've rarely been burned) and are very easy to talk to. I'm not a chatty person by nature, but I've sometimes stuck around talking to one of the girls half an hour or more after I've made my purchase. The store is also easy to get around in even on high-traffic days thanks for a layout that makes the best of its slender space. And being a little over a block from Kenmore Station makes Comicopia extremely convenient for those living on the Green Line. I focused on the manga side of Comicopia in my review, but let me be clear: Comicopia is still an amazing place to go for American comics, both mainstream and indie, along with other international titles. It's the place to go if you need an X-Men fix with your XXXHolic fix, and my number one recommendation for anyone who enjoys comics of any kind or country of origin. read more

Comicopia has been my go to comic book shop while living in Fenway. It's a small space but boy do they pack in a lot of comics. Excellent selection of comics, manga, and graphic novels and they have all the regulars as well as some more unique ones. They don't have a lot of collectables, toys, games and that kind of thing but I'm okay with that since it means that they're focused on their books. I really appreciate their friendly and helpful staff. They're happy to chat with you and can make some great recommendations. Hands down, the best place in Boston to buy comic books in my mind...I think I've been to every comics store (many of which I like and think highly of), but this is the one that I keep on coming back to. For me, it's simple - the staff here is beyond great. They are totally passionate about what they do and they won't let you not be passionate either. More than a few times, as the person ringing me up is looking through my selections, they have said "if these are the books you read, you really oughta check this out..." More often than not, it turns out that whatever "this" was is totally cool (imagine a ninja in a duel with old-time cowboys fighting on a pirate ship cool). They stay open late on Wednesday, the cashiers are friendly, and the owner gives me recommendations as to what I might like. This place has a great selection of comics, tons of back issues and the occasional Asian food product/candy (usually right after AnimeBoston). Owner Matt does a great job of getting the best selection possible, is extremly knowledgable, and was even a judge for the 2002 Eisner awards. read more

I lived practically across the street from Comicopia in Myles Standish when I was a college student at BU. I would routinely come to the store to pick up my weekly titles rather than going to Newbury Comics. However, I eventually got really fed up. The owner is surprisingly rude and snobbish. He dislikes customers coming in to the store early -- and when I say early I mean in the morning and during store hours. The staff was also surprisingly rude. I once waited for 10 minutes at the register when I was the only customer in the store. The only employee (a blue haired goth) present took her sweet time doing everything but offering any help. I figured she might be busy being the only employee then present in the store. When I politely asked for some help a few minutes later, I got a mean look and poor customer service. I've not been to this store since and I actively keep my friends from coming here. Even on Free Comic Book Day. read more
