I had a well executed cappuccino and tasty cardamom buns here while visiting Evanston. Most seating was taken, but the space does not feel crowded (unlike other cafes in the area). This seems like the downtown spot for hip, high quality espresso drinks and pastries.

One of my favorite breakfast shops in Evanston, Illinois is Newport Coffee House. The brewed coffee is bold, unique and full of complexity. I usually get the black drip coffee (my favorite) but if I arrive in the afternoon I'll have a pour over or latte. My daughter will get a Matcha which she thoroughly enjoys. The breakfast/bakery selection is plentiful and I never have a problem finding something to eat. I've had really good luck with their vegan options (banana and oat bar) and really like the scones and cinnamon buns. The service is fast and attentive and there's usually enough tables available to sit and relax. Plus the atmosphere is warm and comfortable.

Food: Date cardamom latte (12oz, oat milk) was bomb! No complaints at all, even from a non coffee drinker. Service: Drink was nice and fast. Ambiance: Cute store in a fun area. Lots to do around the area.

Smoothies were good and staff were friendly and quick with service. Aesthetics were simple and pretty, but was disappointed with the pastries. Chocolate pastry was okay but the savory knot was very salty in certain parts.

Newport Cafe is my Happy place! Ever since I've been visiting Evanston I love relaxing here and getting a garlic knot pastry and hot or cold beverage on a daily basis. This cafe has greatly improved my mental wellbeing just because of the truly kind hearted and welcoming staff that make this cafe so enjoyable for their guests. I've loved every drink I've purchased here whether it's the green smoothie, iced chai, lavender lattes, or iced chai. The barristas here really know how to create a truly delicious coffee or smoothie and the quiche, pastries and cookies are all made her homemade daily on the premises. I highly recommend the ham and cheese croissants and savory garlic knots. Being here is addictive. I see the same group of happy repeat guests here weekly and the ambiance here is always creative and cheerful. Today Ella and Lex were here to listen intently to my stories and spread their wisdom The people who work here are genuinely kind and the customers who visit are a fun and creative group. It's so friendly and upbeat here; not to mention the furnishings are comfortable and anesthetically pleasing.

Cool hipster place for getting coffee in Evanston. It fits in with the college atmosphere, good for reading, studying, or pretending to do something. Newport has coffee but there's also great pastries and treats. Has some that are non dairy. The inside isn't too loud like some places that crank up some indie crap music. Breakfast and morning is the busiest time here. It's expected, but even then there's usually enough tables available inside. There's lots of the smaller tables and a few of the bigger ones. Clean atmosphere. Light colors such as white. As for the coffee, good stuff from what I've had. It's about $4 for a latte. There's non dairy milks such as oat. Also there's some good things to eat. It's about $3 for cookies and treats. Has a few vegan ones to get. Last time I got a Vegan Banana Oat Bar and a Vegan Chocolate Cookie, and these were like the real things. Good place for getting coffee. It's also a place to munch on some healthier oat bars and such. There's plentiful options among both the coffee and treats for vegans and vegetarians.

Wanted to stop by for a quick drink. Place is open and modern aesthetically. Barista was friendly and I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk. I was a little disappointed. The flavor was bland and I've tasted better. It's close by my work so I'll come back and try their coffee because matcha is definitely not one of their strong points.

I finally got to try this coffee shop after a few attempts because parking is nearly impossible on this street and the nearby streets. It's so nice and modern inside. There was a nice cashier who answered questions about the menu and told me where to find the wifi info because I was planning to work while I drank my iced matcha latte. The drink was good but the music was a little loud for a Monday morning - I found it wasn't the best environment for me to be working. Still, I enjoyed my matcha latte and the fresh interior with the cool white and black decor. Also, they had (what I assume to be) the restroom area blocked off, but it wasn't clear why. I'm looking forward to going back to try the coffee someday.

Great study spot and quite bustling! The vibe is very modern and corporate chic, and their date cardamon latte was great too!

Came in from the cold on an April Friday. My two boys, daughter Madison and cousin Jostna. Wanted a coffee and something to share. Didn't realize gluten free is their thing. They do it well. I ordered a pour over. Brandon got a cappuccino, and a brownie to share.

This place is adorable for a coffee shop to do some work at! But don't work too long because there is a time limit to help with table turnover. The chai tea was pretty good, but the savory knot was better. This "pastry" was sooo good my goodness!! Also, the barista who took my order was very kind and patient. Great service!

    Coco brew
    Michelle L.

Great coffee! I ordered the coco brew which is cold brew coffee with chocolate, coconut agave, and coconut milk! It was really tasty! I wish the chocolate flavor was stronger but would highly recommend! The inside is well lit, clean, and has a handful of tables- it seems like a great study spot. Definitely worth a try if you need a caffeine boost and need get some work done!

The coffee is standard (nothing special) but the hot food is what really impressed me. I had the bacon egg and cheese croissant, and it came out so fresh and hot that I couldn't touch it for a few minutes. Once it cooled a bit and I sunk my teeth into it - oh my! Delicious. It doesn't like much in the photo (and it comes wrapped in paper almost like a fast food sandwich), but the taste is great. I liked it so much that I came back the next morning for a Cajun breakfast burrito and same story - piping hot and delicious. Portions are perfect for breakfast. Location is perfect for those at or visiting Northwestern. And the dining area is quite spacious, welcoming, and clean. Staff are quite nice as well. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

The avocado toast: there is super duper small and overall charged. Like smaller then kids size for over priced. For 10 bucks with tax avocado toast is NOT worth it. The flavour content was not there and it did not taste like a proper avocado toast. Felt like it was a BLT that diced up and half. Been better places where avocado and toast cost only seven bucks and it's a very big portion. The matcha is NoT their strong suit at all. Do not get it at all. Couldn't finished it. That's said a lot. Time to time it does have a long line. Staff was really hit or a miss. There is a few people who are rude and think they know what is best for customers hint want to take your money and over charge crap. The cafe is immaculate and service was very friendly. The person who took our order was patient as he explained the different pastries in the case. I wish they had signs explaining what each pastry was so I could have decided while waiting in line. We ended up sharing an iced pistachio latte (delicious and 10/10!), the pistachio cheesecake (10/10!), and the strawberry mousse cake (7/10 - a subtle sweetness, great texture, but needed more cake or crust inside as it was mostly whipped cream and the shell). The mousse cake was $12.00, which felt steep considering it was mostly whipped cream, even though it was obviously beautiful. We would definitely come back for the coffee and to try more menu items! Check this place out!

I wanted to like it. I did. But after a few visits, it's just not for me…read more The first trip, I tried the Matari Tea: Green tea, Himalayan pink salt, milk, and spices, topped with roasted pistachios. Sounds good, right? Alas, it could not have been blander. I couldn't taste any "spices" or even the hint of salt. The profile was that of very watered-down tea mixed with milk, and a ton of pistachios floating on top. Like, barely crushed pistachios. Huge pieces, covering the top of the drink, bobbed around like tiny icebergs, and even they somehow had a toned-down flavor. The drink was definitely a swing and a miss. Fast forward two weeks, and I tried Matari again. This time with a simple cortado. I sat at the table right by the door, and the espresso was pretty good. Solid body, not too bitter. It was on the pricy side ($7+), but I was ok with that. But then, I'm hanging out, sipping my coffee, and I catch a burst of perfume-like scent. I'm shocked, but whatever, I figured someone in heavy perfume walked by, no big deal. A few minutes later, wham, I'm hit in the nose with another burst of perfume. Then, I see it. A slight haze around me. So, not a heavily perfumed woman after all, but an automated air-freshener. After further inspection, I see the unit plugged in on the ground right behind my chair, which sprays up and out on a timer. That's right, an air freshener right next to a table where people consume food and beverages, shooting a mist into the air that slowly rains down onto my head and table, and into my coffee. I ended up tossing the last few sips of my cortado, as I could taste the scented whatever-it-was in my cup. I'd have gone to the counter and asked for a new one, but I was so over my visit by then, I just opted to get out. The staff aren't very friendly. Not rude, but they don't give off a welcoming aura, and I didn't feel like trying to explain the issue. Lastly, can we talk about their little "your order is up" beepers? We've all seen them. The little electronic things that blink and make a noise when your order is ready, so you can go snag it from the counter. When I think of a coffee shop, I think quiet and peaceful, or perhaps a bit louder, with bustling people and well-paired music. At Matari, it's an insane BEEP BEEP BEEP that goes off every few minutes when an order is up. I get it, you don't want to bring the food out to your customers. But does it really need to feel like an airport Chili's? It's a bummer, because Matari is beautiful inside. It's clean, it's chic, and its location is at a notable crossroads in Skokie with plenty of parking, leaving it extremely convenient. They've even got an easy-to-use website, which so many coffee shops simply do not have. There aren't a lot of coffee shops in this particular part of town, which is why I so, so very much wanted to love Matari. But subpar drinks? Air freshener spray intrusions? Frequent and obnoxious beeping? I tried. I'm sorry. I just can't.
