I'm honestly surprised at all of the positive reviews on here. My friends joke that you need a hard hat to play here, it's a hacker's paradise. Lots of women and children which bring pace of play to a grinding halt. Not in great shape and several holes with signage that threaten to kick you off the course for using a 'wood' off the tee - huh? Pay $10 more and play a 'real' course...unless you're just picking up the game. No driving range. read more

This is a tough track. Probably my least favorite Muni course in the area to play. It feels like the entire course is uphill or on the side of a steep slope. read more

So we booked a tee, time on line, for 18 holes with a cart. We got there between 1:00 - 1:20 and was told we could only use the cart for the first 9 holes. It was never mentioned on line. It only states that Monday - Sunday walking after 3:30, which I assumed meant if you show up at that time, not when you are in the middle of a game you started at 1:10. We were paried up with another couple and had to wait for the group of 4 in front of us each hole. On the 4th hole we were greeted by a worker who told us the group, behind us, called to complain that we were taking too long. He knew the group in front of us was holding us up, but this was the first time someone actually called the club house to complain about us! The worker did say he explained to the group behind us that we were all 8 minutes behind and the group in front of us was holding us up. There was a time when we were still on the green and the group behind us hit their ball on the green too close to us. The man we were playing with, had to go and talk with them and explained we were all being held up and please don't do that anyore. So we finished at 3:45 after the 9 holes and the sun was still shining and we asked if we could keep the cart and they said no. They needed time to clean them and didn't want carts out when it got dark! I tried to reason with them as the couple we were playing with, was finished, but they said no. So since we both took off work, we figured we would just rent pull carts, but of course there were none! We attempted to carry our golf clubs, but some of the hills are really steep and we gave up and left. Needless to say we were very dissapointed. So much for a relaxing game of golf to end a hectic week at work! Had we known we would have to carry our golf clubs after the 9th hole, up front, we would never have booked a tee time. It's a good way to make us pay for 18 and only be able to play 9 as we had no choice, because they didn't even have the walking carts available. It was the most dissapointing days of golf I've ever experienced. We won't be going back any time soon. read more

we always enjoy golfing here. the course is well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and it is reasonably priced for the area. pace of play can be pretty slow, but it's a short, walkable golf course. although the fairways are kind of on top of each other, as long as you hit the ball straight this isn't too much of a problem. we took golf lessons here, and the course pro mike is a great guy. he was extremely patient, kind, and knowledgable, and although i'm new to the sport, my fiance has commented since on how excellent my swing is. read more

This is my home course so I may be biased here but I love it. Interesting yet memorable course design. Though the Par 5's tend to be too narrow and unforgiving for me and most of the people I play with. The fairways are generally better maintained than most municipal courses and while it's not as cheap there are a few deals out there (WEEI Country Club, BostonUSA Specials) that will shave a few bucks off. Make sure you bring cash for the club as they have some dope-ass weenies that definitely hit the spot but don't take credit cards. The staff are great, maybe they're surly when they're dealing with a$$holes but if you treat them like human beings and not act like some douchey golf person (with many people that may be an oxymoron) you'll have a great time. read more

Played Sun morning 6/23 and in my opinion this is not worth the $60 green fee (with cart)...tee boxes were horrendous..the greens were a mess..full of divots and apparently never came back after aerating..one tee box is even artificial turf...One hole they'll ask you to leave if you shoot for the green from the tee box..not in very good condition right now... read more

For a public course in the Boston area, this is definitely a winner. They changed management companies a couple years back and you can definitely see that they've made some positive changes to the course flow (they changed the sequence of some holes) and have also pumped some money into the course itself. Despite that fact that I never seem to play a good round here, it's a great course and great value. read more

Where to begin.....no driving range, you have to pay for 18 holes even if you only want to play 9. On a busy Sunday the maintenance crew was mowing on the fairway and greens while we waited. They allowed a group to bring a drone which buzzed around while everyone was trying to putt. The only thing this course has going for it is location. I've been here several times. After today. An odd layout with a few good holes but several lousy ones too. Much of the front 9 is played on the side of a hill so you can get some awkward lies... and can we get rid of the astroturf tees on 4 and 14 please? Course isn't kept in great shape- better than Putterham but not as good as George Wright or Franklin Park. Every time I play here I feel like I should chew the course up because it's so short, but it seems to bring out the worst in my short game. You can pretty much leave the driver in the bag except for a few holes. Most redeeming quality of the course is the price. $30 to walk (even less for Newton residents). If you want a cheap, quick round it's not a bad option early in the morning. Otherwise you have better choices. My least favorite of the Boston area munis. read more

Booked over the phone for 18 holes with a cart using a previous rain check. Went in the next day to play and they then tried to charge me again claiming I used my rain check already. Finally after debating with clubhouse, was able to use the rain check and confirmed with person in clubhouse we were looking to play 18 holes with a cart. Played the front 9 and the starter rudely asked what time we tee'd off and proceeded to tell us we were done playing. We walked over to the clubhouse where we were then told again that we couldn't continue playing due to leagues beginning. I have no problem with not being able to golf during league play but it was never once mentioned to us that there was league play. Why were we told twice before playing that we were good for 18 with a cart and then denied the ability to play later on? Poor communication and rude staff. Won't be going back there anytime soon read more

Great course with a good amount of skill level needed to enjoy. Getting from hole to hole had some decent hills to get up and was at times confusing or where the next tee was but, other than that, solid. Pro shop had some nice equipment and clubs, almost got a new driver. My friend got a new putter though. I would def recommend this course to a beginner to moderate golfer. read more

Built in 1897, I love the feel of this course. It is a short course, but well designed considering its urban location. I love the fact it is about 7 minutes from my house, literally sitting on the Brighton line behind BC. Staff is very friendly, and they take very good care of the course and the greens. I love the after 5PM special rates. Nothing better than playing 9 after a long day at work. The setting is so peaceful, the rabbits and mallards just sit and watch you play! read more

I just played this course on Feb. 16th. I am impressed that they keep this place open and running while most courses are closed for the winder. The course is short however there are definitely some interesting and challenging holes. The course was also under some construction so that made a few holes a little awkward and short. Despite that it was definitely worth the price to keep my game in shape. I look forward to playing here in the spring. read more

Newton is a good, tough track alot of uneven lies force you to put the ball in the right places, this is not a fun place to play the first time around because of the lack of local knowledge needed to play this place well BUT once you've suffered through the odd bounces and times you nearly snapped your driver in half (a tip:- there are very few holes at this course you will need to pull that club out of your bag) you'll realise that this is a good value place and very convenient if you live around this area. I disagree with one of the other reviewers saying that the staff are rude, I always find them extremely friendly and keen to help you out. The layout of the course is changing this year, holes 10,11,12,13 are going to be up "the hill" ( pop into the pro shop and you can pick up a motorised cart for the hill for a mere $5, between 2 people on a hot summer day........priceless!) and 14,15,16,17,18 are going to be the loop with you finishing on the old 14th.... And for the so called poor planning of this place, it was actually designed a little differently, there was land sold to build condos a long time ago which run alongside the course, it used to be much bigger,with, according to one local I played with there once, used to have the longest par 5 in the area! He caddied there as a young lad and remembers the likes of Sam Snead and Babe Ruth playing there. This is a Donald Ross course and anybody who has any interest in the history of the sport he was the designer of Pinehurst No 2 (a host of many US opens) In the summer this course is very well groomed and with the installation of a new irrigation system last year it should continue to provide some of the fastest, smoothest greens in the area. Unfortunately no 19th hole here but there are many good bars close by to take care of those post round beer blues...The Green Briar is a good stop. Have fun...... read more

This is a review only for the lessons I recently took at the course with Mike A, the head Pro. Mike was incredibly patient and helpful throughout the time I took lessons. I consider myself basically a beginner as I have not played for the last several years and am looking to get back into the game. Mike helped me with all aspects of the game, from putting/chipping to iron play to driving. While the $200 price tag for 4 lessons seems steep, I absolutely consider it a great value. read more

Overall, Newton Commonwealth is a decent par-70 course just outside of Boston that presents challenges to both a new golfer and an experienced player. You can play the course for a very reasonable price (even on weekends), and the fairways and greens are kept in good condition. It is definitely a course where the approach shots and the short game are important. My chief complaint about the course is that there is no putting green and no driving range to warm up (and no area to even take some practice swings). In addition, there are several par 3s that are very short. Certainly not the best course in the area, but definitely worth a look if you're trying to save some money. read more

Newton Comm is one of the first courses I started playing on years ago, so I might be a little biased, but it is a very fun course to play, with the only issue being the fact that it's very short with many par 4's at or below 320 yards. It was in pretty good shape, but the greens could have been faster. It's a little hilly to walk at times, but the general short length makes it quite manageable in my opinion. One benefit is that I got to play it for $18 instead of the $30 standard rate with my collegegolfpass, which allows anyone (even my buddy in grad school who has it) to play at that price. For students and grad students in Boston, I would highly recommend getting one (www.collegegolfpass.com) because it's pretty easily accessible for those living in the Boston area. Let me first preface this review with the following statement: I suck at golf. For those of you out there that share my pain, let me warn you that you won't get any sympathy from NC. Between the requisite ducking from stray golf balls flying your way (of which there seems to be a lot considering how close the holes are to one another) and the plethora of water hazards lining the course, it's not exactly the ideal situation for a beginner, especially after dropping down $50 to play the 18 (w/ cart though). To the more experienced golfers, take my review with a grain of salt. I have no idea how NC compares to other courses in the area as I haven't been to very many yet. But it seems to me that any course that restricts your using a driver on the last hole due to liability issues (i.e. shattering a parked car's windshield or killing someone in the proshop, both which are unlikey as the parking lot and proshop are decently far from the green) really didn't plan well in advance. Granted it was a downhill shot and I suppose if you've really been hitting the gym, or if you're a PGA tour player, you could hit well beyond the green. But if they were really concerned about all that, why not put up a net? They do in plenty of other places on the course... It's so anticlimactic to have played 17 holes, willing yourself to go the distance on the final one, only to see a big red sign scold you with threats of expulsion from the course if you're caught using anything other than an iron. Seems pretty poor planning to me.. but then again what do I know? I suck at golf. read more

Golf course is in great condition but the golf shop attendant Mike has made my last few experiences horrible for a few reasons and I personally won't return. I don't know if it's an age issue but he is very condescending. I went during the week on a slow day with a friend to play and when I told him we didn't book a tee time he looked horrified and told me we were lucky they could fit us in when the course was wide open. He spoke to us as if it were an issue we wanted to PAY him to play at the golf course. Rather than thanking us for choosing the golf course and bringing our business there he treated us like we were a problem and was extremely rude. Today I called and told him we wanted to book a tee time and told me I had to go online to do so, expressed my disappointment and he said we could go somewhere else... Which I will forever be doing from now on. read more

NC is a decent course that accoumedates both beginners and low handicaps. This course as said before is VERY hilly. The front 9 play on the side of a hill. On some holes you will hit a pefect tee shot and will find your ball on the other fairway, no joke. I enjoy the back 9 at NC as water comes into play and a few dog legs too. I have played NC this year 5 or 6 times and the 17th and 18th are a swamp. And make a tee time for Sat and Sun...if you try and walk on you will wait a solid 30-60 minutes. No driving range and a sub par putting green too. read more

This is my husband's local course.. very convenient as it is right down the street. In his words... the layout is very fair (but hilly and tight...the fact that it's so short helps make up for this) and a terrific place to learn the game of golf. The staff is very nice and accommodating. If, however, you are expecting country club conditions and improvements year over year, do not expect it. The resources dedicated to preserving quality of the grass, the fairways and the greens are just not there. The grounds crew works REALLY hard but there just aren't enough experts or money to provide for a great value outside of a season ticket...and even then it's tough. Proximity is the only thing this place has going for it. For similar rates and better golf experience I would recommend Sandy Burr or George Wright for a better experience, you just need to travel a touch further but it's worth it. Also, if you don't get a weekend tee time before 11AM you're in for a long backup on nice summer days. No bar but you can get away with lots of beer on the course. This helps when the backups take place ;-) read more

The course is in very good condition and is still feels like a Donald Ross course. Also the price is on the cheaper side too. But where I went here the pro inside to be uninterested and wouldn't strike up a conversation. Also there was no starter outside to regulate who goes where. That is the problem with this course is it has an incredibly slow pace of play. It took us almost 3 hours to play nine holes on a wens day afternoon. Good course for the money but be prepared to play a 3 hour round. read more

Nice course layout and fairly well maintained but save yourself the time and money. It took 3 hours to play 9 holes on a Friday. I signed up for 18 and I can handle slow play at a cheaper round of golf but the management and the ranger had no idea how to do their job and did nothing to move along the pace of play in the group in front of us. They even saw the slowness on the first hole and had to speak with them which did nothing (the players in front swung and missed multiple times and did not pick up). By hole 7, the group in front of the slow group was on the green on 9. After hole 7, the ranger talked to them a 3rd time and did nothing to move pace of play again and proceded to tell us well, they will be done at the turn (I even told him how the group was sharing clubs, despite having 4 bags which was causing huge delays in walking the club from side to side). They gave me 18 dollars in credit back for the back 9, instead of doing their job in maintaining an adequate pace of play for the course. They refused to refund my credit card or with cash as they probably know I'll just give someone the 18 dollar credit or just eat it and not return. Despite the rating and slope, if u can shoot anywhere near 100 and want to play 9 or 18 in under 3 or 6 hours, go elsewhere, especially if you have a car. Newton Commonwealth finds a way to take the fun out of golf. read more
