I have been going to Newton Medical for many years. I've received excellent care and treated very well. You can have their doctors be your primary care physician even though they are an urgent care facility. The pluses and minuses of that? You don't wait for an appointment weeks away. You just go, but it's first come first serve though there is a sign up list (in advance) for 9:00 that can lessen your wait time. I've also gone in and there's been no wait time in the afternoon. Also because they're an urgent care facility their hours are a bit longer than a regular doctor's office. Dr. Velarde has been my doctor for over 20 years now. I trust her as my healer. read more

I couldn't get an appointment with my primary in time for an upcoming surgery. This was the only place I could find that takes walk ins for pre op visits as well as any other urgent care needs. Came in today around 10 and was out by 1040. The receptionist was very professional and friendly. Took all my info and co pay. Nurse called me super fast and went through the basics. The doctor was Piotr A. Biegun. He came in fast asked all the questions they typically do and put in an order for bloodwork which unfortunately they don't do here, but Lab Corp is right across the street. I needed pre-surgery clearance and my Primary Care physician was dragging her feet. Time's a wasting so my surgeon's office recommended this facility. Despite what other people may have said, I couldn't have had a more positive experience. Despite me never having been there before, I was treated quickly and courteously as I checked in. I did have to wait but that is something you have to expect with a walk in clinic. The nurse was thorough and very friendly. Answered all my questions and gave some tips about what I needed to do. The doctor was very helpful and suggested I get something that wasn't listed on the pre-surgery list checked out. Not a huge issue but something that should be looked at. I couldn't tell you how long I was there, I wasn't checking my watch but it was not excessive. I would definitely go there again. read more

Highly unprofessional and unethical. Refused to offer any service saying their computer was down at 9am as soon as they opened. The NP on site- Octavian- was rude and was asking me what my problems were out in the lobby. Didn't take me in a room to discuss. I had insurance and was willing to wait hours if needed. The nurse on duty was abrasive, condescending and rude and told me that the "doctor"- who actually isn't a doctor- wasn't going to help me. And provided no reason why. I do not recommend any practice that treats potential patients that way. I had gone in to establish a primary care are physician. Glad that I dodged that bullet! They lost business. They also violated privacy laws. Dept of health has several reports on them. Stay away. These people are in the wrong industry. read more

I do not do many reviews, but after reading reviews from other patients, I needed to express how pleased I am with Newton Medical. Dr. Regina Velarde is my Primary Care doctor who I have been with for over 8 years. She always has time to listen to my concerns and offer me advice. I realized how grateful I am to this practice especially on my last visit. The convenience of being able to see Dr. Velarde or Dr. Biegun for instant care is what everyone needs when they are not feeling well and cannot wait to get an appointment somewhere else. The staff at both their Latham and Colonie offices are outstanding, especially Cathy who is a nurse at the Colonie location. Newton Medical offers a signup sheet for those wishing to be put on a list to see a doctor starting at 9 a.m. This is a plus to be able to call the day before or a few days before to be seen on a certain day. AskEd the dr if he could sign a note for a stand up desk at work due to me sitting 9 hours a day it was rough on my back . he told me why would he write his name on a piece of paper for me . told him I need a prescription for acne until I seen a dermatologist in 3 months he said the name of the medications that would help and told me no he would not . I've been a patient for a better part of 9 years and have received the best medical care insurance can buy. My doctor is thorough in her examinations from head to toe. Each visit consists of checking vital signs -- temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate to evaluate your body using observation, palpitation, percussion, and auscultation. Her exam includes laboratory tests, pulmonary function testing, chest x-rays, audiograms, EKGs, full-body CAT scans, heart stress tests, prostate exams, and a full urinalysis. I can't attest to others experiences, but when I visit Dr. Velarde offices there is always 6 to 10 people waiting to get in. read more

I needed to find a doctor for a preop visit. My own PCP had no time until 11/21. My operation is scheduled for 6/2/21. I had to find something more appropriate. I found this place. When I read the reviews I was fearful of going there. However, with little choice, I went there. Much to my surprise, the office was clean, professional and friendly. There was a short waiting period, nurses were helpful, doctor was friendly. The necessary exam was completed and I was out in less than one hour. Overall highly recommend. read more

I had eye surgery scheduled for July 28, 2022. A pre-surgery Covid test was required. Went to Newton Medical, on Monday July 25 for the required Covid test. The day of my surgery, the office informed me that they had not received the results. Surgery was delayed. Fortunately, they performed an in-house Covid test. The test was negative & I had my surgery. I do not understand why Newton Medical did not forward the test result. A second patient had the same problem. read more

Sent here by my surgeon for pre-op clearance, which isn't a physical, just enough to say a person is fit for anesthesia. Both women behind the desk didn't know what that was, although my doctor told me he sent folks there routinely. Both women would not look me in the eyes, and weren't sure about my medical coverage, although when pressed, they agreed they took my insurance, MVP. I asked how much it would cost, and they brusquely admonished me to call my insurer myself, and despite the "no cellphones" sign, and my plea for one of them to call the physician's hotline on my insurance card, they refused. I sat in the lobby on hold while they blithely ignored me. Absolutely no one was in the facility. The older of the two women, who didn't know the answers to any question I had (and I was calm, friendly, and self-effacing), handed me my laboriously filled out paperwork and said "I don't think you'll be happy coming here, this isn't a good fit." I continued to ask the younger a few questions. It seems they are using a code on my pre-op papers that reads "critical care facility," and because they function as that, in addition to being a regular medical facility, they refused to code it as such, which meant I had a $55 copay instead of $0. My insurer got on the phone with the younger under duress, but she wouldn't budge; the doctor himself finally emerged, and explained himself. He said this could potentially turn into a full-blown physical depending upon his findings, which only required an EKG, breathing, pulse, very peripheral things necessary to clear me for anesthesia (new law in NY, active since October 1). I proposed that all his pre-op tests would be normal, and if not, I would be glad to pay whatever necessary according to any work he needed to so. No dice. At last, I said I would take a break to think about it, and took my papers, as the younger said she would shred them, and I asked why, since I might return, and I was still sincere, quiet, kind, and didn't interrupt anyone at any time. With a roll of the eyes, I was given my papers, and summarily dismissed. I did wind up saying thank you to the doctor, and added, pointing to the women, "And thank you both for being so incredibly gracious, I'll be sure to tell others." i would give this urgent care 0 stars if possible. Doctor Piotr Biegun is a complete joke. The nurse took the weight/temperature of my son and was super polite. i simply asked doctor biegun to take his temperature again since he had a fever before we left the house but he did not once we entered his facility. he refused rudely and asked why, i responded just for piece of mind, explaining the fever he had before we left and that it was possible our thermometer was not accurate. he got into a heated argument over taking a temperature again with my sons father and started raising his voice infront of my 8 month old. would not recommend this practice whatsoever. this "doctor" had a horrible attitude while checking over my baby and the audacity to raise his voice and argue infront of him for a good 3 minutes. the nurse was the only decent part of this practice. read more

The desk people are doing their job the best they can at this location. The NP was pleasant on my first visit, but somewhat defensive on the second visit when I asked questions about the amount of time I waited (3 hrs) to get a 5 second swab performed for COVID, per my MD before surgery. The practical nurse was even more defensive and didn't exhibit any type of customer service approach I could identify. When I asked why nurses didn't do the simple swab test, she went into how much work there was to do to with paperwork and computer work . . . and a less than 5 second swab was going to add to that workload? Only the providers could do it? I could do it myself! The NP claimed that between their own patients, and now COVID patients, it was a lot. He asked what I would suggest (more defense), and without letting me add my thoughts, he said, "add another clinic?" I asked if this was the only clinic that did COVID in the area, and he said it was, which is not true. There are many places in the Capital Region that performs COVID tests. I simply followed the recommendation of my physician. I had no idea the wait time I would face for a 5 second swab. Literally! Being an RN myself, I'm fully aware of paperwork, computer work, and making sure i's are dotted and t's are crossed, but that's part of the job. I would never think of not smiling at a patient when they arrived, and simply just asking rote questions. I would have been less upset had I been greeted with a smile, and "I'm so sorry the wait was so long, we have been particularly busy today." That would have gone a long, long way in my feelings about this place. Everything is about customer service in health care. The NP had some, the practical nurse had none. read more

My husband and I have been patients at Newton Medical in Latham for over 25 years. We have always been treated with respect and have received what we consider to be excellent medical care by a primary care facility. We currently see Dr. Velarde, who we absolutely adore. She is thorough, listens to our issues and doesn't push medication on us when she feels it is not the right course of treatment. We both very much appreciate being able to speak openly with Dr. Velearde without fear of being treated like she is the professional and knows better than we do. I take issue with the negative reviews of Newton Medical. People who do not regularly frequent a primary care facility choose Newton Medical because it is a Walk-In office and they expect to be treated like they are life long clients. I have never been treated with less than respect by the office staff and find it hard to believe that anyone who treated the staff with respect would have received less than respectful treatment themselves. People demand and when the demands are not met, they blame the facility, not their ignorance. All medical facilities today demand certain medical verification upon arrival and prior to treatment. Newton Medical asking for this verification is not treating someone in a manner not to be expected. One should know in this day and age that all verification of medical insurance is a must and if not carried at all times (which is a good idea) then at least upon arrival at any medical facility. I truly hope anyone reading reviews will take into consideration the mood of the person writing. Anyone who thinks they didn't get the stellar treatment that they someone feel they deserve often takes a negative point of view that is at the very least a skewed vision. To say that Newton Medical did not give adequate medical care or did not direct the patient to a specialist in an area they do not deal with is really not being truthful. The attitude one goes into Newton Medical with often determines the view upon leaving, which is the same with any establishment one does business with. read more

This urgent care has had me waiting for over 2 hours, with no information as to how much longer I'd have to be waiting. The service is the worst possible service to ever be given by any known urgent care. This place is not somewhere you should decide to stop by if you need quick and fats check ups because they move at the same pace as a snail. The workers here walk and even talk slow. I've been in here more than once and every time that I've been in here I've come across people that have been waiting for hours before me. I came inside with the idea that I'd be getting a quick and easy check up on my health status because I wasn't feeling well that week and needed some urgent care attention but wasn't met with anything urgent but rather the complete opposite. The office manager JILL refused medical care for my mother who was in severe pain at 82 years old today. Mom has Medicare and VNSNY. We did. It have her card however her Medicare number could be found in the portal. This facility will be reported to DOH and Joint Commission. It is against the law to refuse medical care. read more

I recently hurt my pinky finger, I wasn't sure if it was broken or what so I figured I would go and get X-rays done here, waited for an hour and a half, waited another 30 minutes in the exam room, and in the end the doctor told me I had just a sprain and that it didn't need a splint or anything, about a week later it wasn't getting better so I decided to go somewhere else for X-rays just to be sure. Turns of my pink is completely broken. If I hadn't seeked a second opinion my pinky would have been completely screwed up. read more

I wonder if the doctor an actual doctor (received his PHD from the US). He does not know what he's doing to say the least. My daughter had hurt her ankle, brought her in because she couldn't walk on it. He took an xray and said it was fine. Told me to go home and wrap it. I told him to wrap it and to give her something to help her walk on it because she couldn't put pressure on it. He begrudgingly wrapped it w/ an ace bandage and gave us crutches. Two days go by and it's getting worse; swelling up twice as much and bruising is getting worse. We go to the bone and joint center and found out that she has a sever sprain which requires a walking cast. The doctor at the Bone and Joint Center told us that putting an ace bandage on her ankle was equivalent to putting a bandaid on a gushing wound that won't stop bleeding. You are better off going to the ER. read more

Had a back injury that I had been seen at the ER for a week earlier. My orthopedic couldn't fit me in until three weeks later and I was starting a new job. Orthopedic office suggested going to an urgent care or ER again if the pain continued. I was in so much pain I was crying and my boyfriend insisted we go. I arrived at 6:15pm. They closed at 7pm so my boyfriend went in to see if they could still see me and they said no problem. There was no other patients in the office yet I still wasn't seen until 6:50pm. Once I was finally seen the doctor did not ask what my pain level was, what I had already taken for it. None of those usual questions. All they did was touch my back and test my range of motion. They suggested two medications and I told her I've tried both and they do not help and I can not take NSAIDs. She asked what I've taken that helps and I told her. However, being it's a controlled substance she flat out refused and prescribed the two medications I told her I had already tried with no help. She did not listen to anything I said. It seemed as if she just wanted me out because it was so close to closing time. In fact, by the time I was leaving the exam room, she was coming out of her office with her keys and purse. Patient beware... good luck getting a proper diagnosis. Saw the same doctor there on 2 different occasions and was misdiagnosed as having a cold only to go to my regular doctor a week later and get medication for a sinus infection and ear infection. went to Newton Medical as advised by my Doctor for a pre-op clearance because I was in between primary care physicians. got there and waiting room was empty employees were not friendly and hardly made eye contact. after a half hour I got to see a PA.Did not know I needed a physical but got one anyway and an EKG.PA told be that I had an abnormality (that I knew about)and would have to compare it to my last one.She told me she would call my last doctor. gave me a script and on my wayI went. here is where the horror story starts I went to the lab for blood work tech said she could not do it because my name was not on the script. She called Newton and asked them to fax one over. 45 minutes and 3 phone calls later the tech told them that she needed it immediately they were ready to close and would have to send me home. when I got home there was a message from Jill(office mgr) to call them 9:00 am the next day called asked what they wanted was told by Heather she would call me back.Two hours later called again was put on hold and 10 minutes later Heather told me she would call me back.I am still waiting for the call back. I informed my Doctors office about this and she told me she would report it and I should go pick the forms. Waited 30 minutes for a doctor to put his initians on 3 forms. never in my life have I seen an incompetent Medical office. If I could give them 0 stars I would but I can't If you are sick drive to Memorial Hospital do not go there. read more
