When I was looking for a yarn store that offered more varieties versus the 90% acrylic offerings at Michaels and Jo-Anns, I looked this place up on Yelp and decided to stop by. It was tricky to find - it's located in a small business strip mall area off S State College Blvd and is located on the right side of the strip mall, second to last door. The shop is small and stocked from ceiling to floor with each shelf labeled with the material content of each yarn. The man who helped me was kind enough to take me to the areas where I could find cotton yarns for a project I was working on. While they mostly carry acrylics and synthetic fibers for handknits and knitting machines, they did have a small collection of unmercerized cotton yarns. I bought 2 cones of yarn for a little over $20. The woman who rung up my purchase gave me some helpful tips for knitting with this yarn (Knit a test swatch, handwash the final garment to prevent shrinking, etc.) before telling me about their seasonal yarn sale they host out in the parking lot. Months later, I returned for the sale and they have everything! Acrylics, cottons, designer quality yarns from overseas, blends - it was amazing to see their assortment. I had a bag full of yarns that came out to $25-30 that would have retailed for more full price. I like to shop small store. However, this store is not for hand knitters. I went in and asked for some dbl pt needles. She pulls out a box and said have a look. After a few minutes I asked if this was a retail store or wholesale. Turns out it is more for the weaver/machine knitter. The gentleman in the back offered the name of a store that was in another city. Not impressed. Ended up at Michael's which had the product but they lack in service. read more

do not go here. I sent 3 carriages to Norm to fix over 1 1/2 years ago and he still has one of them. Every time I call I get a different story from Norm, "they are in the warehouse," "I sent it today," "It's stuck on a truck," or the worst response is "I may have sent it to someone else." Norm used to be good but he no longer has the mental capacity to work on knitting machines, and sadly he has no idea what is going on. He charged me 400 dollars to tune and fix 3 carriages, but none of the work has been done and one carriage was returned more broken than what I sent it to him, 1 was returned with yarn still stuck in the gears (obviously he didn't tune it), and the last carriage never came back to me. I've lost 400 dollars to Norm, now have 1 completely busted carriage and 1 is still missing that I have no hopes for every getting back. Stay away from Norm and Newton's Yarn Country. read more

Yes, it's shabby & a little difficult to find, but it's great nonetheless. I just started weaving, & after watching a few YouTube videos & purchasing a loom, I decided to hunt down a place to purchase yarn. I prefer to put my money into smaller businesses, so I skipped the trip to Michael's & JoAnn's. It's not the most organized place, & it's quite small, but if you have time & an idea of what you're looking for, you will discover some gems... & the prices are fair! The customer service was great. I was greeted by Cheryl, who was teaching when I walked in, but would check on me to see if I needed anything. I scored all types of interesting yarn, including some beautiful hand dyed skeins. Looking for crappy service and crappy yarn? Then you've definitely come to the right place. I went here a few months ago for their bi-annual yarn sale and I was so disappointed. They have no signs indicating the location of the store and it's difficult to find considering how it is located inside warehouse building. I first visited the building with all the "sale yarn" which turned out to be an empty lot filled with crappy yarn. It looked like they made their own yarn and anything that hadn't been sold in the last 20 years has been collected in huge bins covered with dust. There was a person just sitting in the front and back of the store completely ignoring all the customers. There was only one faded out sign that indicated the price of yarn. I then went to the main part of the store where they had a much better collection of yarn. Here, they had signs that told you what material the yarn was composed of. However, the prices were just ridiculous. Even the sale yarn was $60-$100 for one skein. Although I searched through the tiny store for close to an hour, NO ONE came to me to ask me if I needed any help finding anything. There were tons of people coming in and out of the store and everyone else got the staff's attention but myself. I honestly felt that this had something to do with the fact that I am Asian and didn't look like the "typical" knitter. I was so offended by the outrageous prices, the horrible customer service and CRAPPY yarn that I wouldn't go NEAR this place with a 100 foot pole. I wish I could give this place a ZERO. read more

I LOVED this place! While to some the prices may seem steep they have to take into consideration how much yarn you are getting for that price. Their Softball cotton is awesome as are their wools (achoo, I'm allergic). This is the place to go for big projects, I came in for sweater yarn...in the middle of a 25% off sale. The sales lady was more than attentive (although we were the only ones there), helpful and explained everything. A helpful hint, check out their website before heading in, if you see something you like give them a call and let them know, they'll have it brought over from the warehouse for you. I am giving the Price Range a 1 $, because if you do the math their yarn is super inexpensive. The price tag you see may look a little high but you have to figure out how many yard you are getting in the pound price you pay, it is a STEAL compaired to going to a craft store or local yarn shop. read more

It's hard to find, as there are no large signs on any of the buildings that look all the same. There's only a tiny sign that you can see from ten feet away, so drive slowly and look all over the building complex before you give it up and call it a bad job. Coming in, I was greeted, but stared at a little without any offers of help. Funny thing was, there was only one other customer in there at the same time. There is a little too much acrylic in here for my taste. Yarn comes wound in huge hanks or cones. I'm assuming that it's mostly a machine knitting-oriented store just from the sheer volume of stuff they are trying to sell. Prices are competitive, as the other reviewers have mentioned, for the content that the yarn purports to be made up of. However, there are no company names or anything so I'm personally a little skeptical about the actual values and quality of the yarn. Newton's is a good place to get yarn for large projects, especially for weaving or machine knitting. They are not your local yarn shop with tons of novelty yarns with subtle dye variations. Stock is mainly acrylic blends, but they also have some very nice cashmere/merino yarn. Most yarn comes in cones or big hanks. They price per pound rather than per skein, but because one pound equals more than four ordinary 100 gram skeins, prices are actually very competitive. Store is cheerfully messy and a little bit shabby. Think of it as a tiny wholesale warehouse.. Customer service is helpful and friendly. read more

I have never worked with a more dishonest shop. The owner Norman repeatedly lied about my order (it had to be shipped) and then would not honor our agreement to refund me for the broken, clearly not refurbished and incorrect machine that he shipped. He also tried to tell me that I didn't return things he never shipped to me. I asked for tracking and he sent two--one for a shipment to another state, and one was not a valid tracking number. USPS has no record of more shipments from his shop to me either. Luckily I had many photos and emails, and th cc company stepped in to refund me--except for the return shipping on the machine that he did send--he had promised to refund me, but of course that was just another one of his lies. I've since spoken to others who have also told me their tales of bad service and lies. BUYER BEWARE!!! read more

Great value for yarn, lots to choose from. The staff is friendly and greeted me with big smiles. The owners are very nice people. If you want a good bargain for lots of yarn this is the place. Their rayon and viscose yarn is terrific for hand knitting. If you are into machine knitting this is the place in Los Angeles! Their knowledge in machines and parts and repairs can not be found anyplace else in the area. read more

This store and the women that run it are MORE than amazing! I was in the area and stopped by. The store is full of wonderful yarn. Also, my friend recently gave me a huge knitting machine and as luck (or fate) would have it this store (I believe) specializes in knitting machines and yarn! They have classes, that I hope to soon take, to learn how to use my new machine. Did I mention they dye all their own yarn there!? Well, they do and it is unbelievable how beautiful it is. Yarn does come in huge cones or skeins, but, I did see it is also sold by the pound. The people there are so nice I would ask if I needed a certain quantity. There are also sections with smaller/regular sized skeins or hanks. The women there were very friendly and answered any question I had, but best of all they just let me wander (like I love to do) around and touch all the yarny goodness. I have not been to the store yet, but I just went to their Spring Parking lot Sale. I bought $20.37100% Italian wool hanks/ 0.42 lbs for $3.00. I also bought White Cotton hanks, Cotton novelties,2 Acrylic novelty, 1.5lbs cone of Lavender colored chenille, 1.5lbs wool cones. Total was $25.00 for 8 items. I saw lots of chenilles, Acrylic and cotton yarn in many colors. They had fair amount of Novelty Yarns. You have to be there early! People are buying shopping cart full of huge cones! They produce their own yarns and they had lots large cones that are 1.5~5lbs and they are $3~$5 per lbs @ the Spring Sale. Hanks are sold anywhere from $3~$5/ hank. It is a great buy if you are serious weaver and knitters. Some people drove from San Diego for this sale. It's a definitely one of the kind sale and tickle your creative bugs. read more

I suppose my first clue might have been the shop's name. "Newton's Yarn Country" doesn't exactly scream, "fine yarns for the discerning knitter." But I was hoping for a hidden gem, or at least a diamond in the rough, so I ventured out to the little industrial park on Howell near the Tile Mile part of State College. Yes, it's a little hard to find, but so is the Purl warehouse in Costa Mesa, and that is definitely worth the effort, so its obscure location was no deterrent. Even after seeing the underwhelming building and still hoping for a special find, I entered the little box of a store and wasn't greeted by a single person. A class was going on and it was clear to me that this was a specialty store for machine knitters. Other reviewers have mentioned that it's great for that, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but there's no reason for the store to be filthy and the service so...uh - non-existent. The yarns are primarily for machine knitting. I left the store as ignored as I had entered it. After my experience here, even Michaels seemed like a yarn-lover's dream. I ordered a machine off the poor web site. It turned out to be used and old. It took along time for the business to get this sorted. I got three wrong transit numbers, and three emails addressed to someone else saying there was a package to be delivered. Because of their poor customer service I cancelled the order, but they sent something anyway. It was not the machine I ordered. I waited for their contact. They are very poor at communication. Eventually I contacted BBB to intervene, they ignored their emails too. I am now awaiting a return label. Goodness knows when that will come. I suggest you avoid this business and go to someone who cares for their customers. read more

Drove all the way to Anaheim and after a few u-turns, finally found this place. Far less than I expected, especially after Dr. Laura's "endorsement". The place was messy, the books were on sale but very outdated, and there was nothing there worth purchasing. I'm not a machine knitter so maybe it's more appropriate for them but I will never go back there. Waste of gas. read more

Came here bc a woman in my knitting group brought a flyer for a big sale. They make a lot of their own yarn here, so don't come here looking for brand name yarns. Their yarn is nice but expensive...although a lot of them come in huge skeins and cones of 1000+ yards. They have a big sale about twice a year - I bought one acrylic skein and one rainbow skein (each about 1000 yards) for $6.50 at their big garage sale. Even half off, some of their stuff is pretty pricey. The location can be a bit difficult to find since it's in a business complex, but when you turn into the lot, it's basically towards the right side. read more

I was very please with the yarn selection and very satisfied with the attentiveness of the sales lady. This is the only machine knitting shop around so there really isn't anything to compare to it. The lady in the shop was very patient and explained all the accessories I could use with my machine, even demonstrating techniques on the floor models. Anything I could ask for, for my machine seemed to be in the shop. Very suprising when, in the past I have searched the internet for counteless hours to find these same items. It is a definate go-to for machine knitters. Also as far as the cost of the yarn. The yarn is sold in larger skeins, than typical shops. I find the price per yardage to be comparable if not less than yarn shops where u must by 5-10 skeins per project. I wasn't really shopping for yarn but got some anyway and am thinking of going back for more, even though I will have to drive from LA. read more
